SCROLL OF AGES UNROLLED! ONLY THE LAMB OF GOD CAN UNLEASH ITS SACRED SECRETS!

“And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof.” (Revelation 5:5, KJV)

HEAVEN’S PROFOUND MYSTERY AND THE DESPERATE SEARCH FOR ONE WHO IS WORTHY!

Greetings, dedicated scholars of sacred writ and faithful messengers of the prophetic Word! Our journey today transports us into the very throne room of the universe, to witness a scene of unparalleled drama and cosmic significance: the presentation of a scroll sealed with seven seals, and the poignant search for one worthy to unlock its mysteries. This pivotal account from Revelation chapter 5, which forms the heart of our study, reveals the hidden history of God’s church and the unfolding of His divine providences. This exploration, especially for the earnest Bible workers of the Seventh-day Adventist Reform Movement and all who seek to understand the deep things of God, will focus on this sealed book, its profound contents, and the unique qualification of the Lamb, Jesus Christ, to break its seals and reveal its truths. With the King James Bible and the illuminating testimonies of Ellen G. White as our guides, let us approach this awe-inspiring scene with reverence and a deep desire to comprehend its meaning for us today.

THE CELESTIAL CONUNDRUM: A MYSTERIOUS SCROLL SEALED, ITS CONTENTS THE DESTINY OF AGES!

In the hand of Him who sat upon the throne, the apostle John beheld a scroll, “written within and on the backside, sealed with seven seals” (Revelation 5:1, KJV). This scroll was no ordinary document; it contained matters of immense importance, the very unfolding of God’s purposes and the prophetic destiny of nations and His church through the ages. Its seven seals indicated the profound secrecy and divine authority guarding its contents, a mystery that no created being could initially penetrate. Ellen G. White describes the nature of this sacred record: “The book with the seven seals contains the history of God’s providences, the prophetic history of nations and the church.” (Manuscript Releases, vol. 9, p. 7). The sight of this sealed record, holding such momentous truths, deeply affected the seer; Sr. White notes John’s reaction from his own words: “This roll was written within and without. John says: ‘I wept much, because no man was found worthy to open and to read the book, neither to look thereon.’ The vision affected him.” (Manuscript 129, 1905, quoted in SDA Bible Commentary, vol. 7, p. 968). The profound contents were locked away, as Sr. White states, “The future was locked from his [John’s] sight; he could not read its mysteries,” (The Acts of the Apostles, p. 583) until a worthy one could be found. This sealed scroll, therefore, represented the deep and intricate plan of God, awaiting a qualified hand to unroll its sacred, time-bound secrets.

A UNIVERSE IN UTTER SUSPENSE: NO CREATED BEING FOUND WORTHY TO UNSEAL THE DIVINE MYSTERY!

The call for one worthy to open the sealed scroll echoed through the vast expanse of heaven, earth, and under the earth, yet a profound silence and inability met this divine challenge. No angel, no human being, no created intelligence possessed the inherent merit or redemptive authority to break the seals and look upon the sacred record of God’s unfolding will. John’s reaction underscores the universal crisis: “And I wept much, because no man was found worthy to open and to read the book, neither to look thereon.” (Revelation 5:4, KJV). Sr. White emphasizes this universal inadequacy: “No man, no angel, was found worthy to open the book or to look thereon. John wept much because there was none to open the book.” (The Review and Herald, January 1, 1889). The entire heavenly host shared this deep concern; as Sr. White describes, “A deep solicitude was felt by all the heavenly host. They longed to have the mysteries of the plan of salvation unfolded.” (The Signs of the Times, November 1, 1899). It became agonizingly clear, as Lesson 249 states, that “This book was sealed, and no man could open it, but Christ alone.” (The Story of Redemption, p. 429). The inability of any created being to open the scroll highlighted the unique qualifications required—qualifications rooted in perfect character, redemptive power, and intimate knowledge of the divine will, found only in One.

BEHOLD THE VICTOR-LAMB: THE LION OF JUDAH, THE SLAIN REDEEMER, HE ALONE PREVAILS AND IS WORTHY!

Just as despair seemed to settle upon the scene, a voice of triumph pierced the silence. One of the elders directed John’s gaze to the only One in the universe qualified to open the scroll: Jesus Christ, revealed in His dual capacity as the conquering Lion of the tribe of Judah and the sacrificial Lamb that had been slain. His victory over sin and death, and His atoning sacrifice, uniquely equipped Him to unseal the record of God’s purposes. The elder proclaimed: “Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof.” (Revelation 5:5, KJV). Sr. White powerfully echoes this announcement: “Then one of the elders spoke to John, saying, ‘Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof.’ ” (The Acts of the Apostles, p. 583). It was His redemptive work that qualified Him; Sr. White explains, “He who was slain, He whose blood was shed for the sins of the world, He was found worthy to open the seals and to reveal the future destiny of man.” (The Signs of the Times, November 8, 1899). Indeed, she affirms, “It was the Lamb of God that was found worthy, He who had been slain, whose life was poured out as a sacrifice for sinful men.” (The Review and Herald, December 4, 1900). Thus, the Lamb, through His prevailing sacrifice and triumphant resurrection, demonstrated His supreme worthiness to undertake the divine commission of revealing God’s hidden counsels.

THE UNSEALING CONTINUES: PROGRESSIVE REVELATION THROUGH CHRIST TO HIS END-TIME PEOPLE – THE PROFOUND PROPHETIC ANTITYPE!

While the scene in Revelation 5 depicts Christ’s unique worthiness to initiate the unsealing of the scroll containing God’s comprehensive plan, the prophetic antitype is found in the ongoing and progressive understanding of these revealed truths granted to God’s people, especially in the end times, all made possible through Christ’s mediation and the work of the Holy Spirit. In light of these concepts, what is the prophetic antitype found? It is the experience of God’s final generation who, because the Lamb has prevailed, are enabled by the Spirit to comprehend and proclaim the “unsealed” portions of prophecy (like those in Daniel and Revelation) crucial for their time, guiding them through final deceptions and empowering their witness. Daniel was told to “shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end.” (Daniel 12:4, KJV). The unsealing of these prophecies is an antitypical act. Sr. White confirms this: “The book of Daniel is now unsealed, and the revelation made by Christ to John is to come to all the inhabitants of the earth. By the increase of knowledge a people is to be prepared to stand in the latter days.” (Testimonies to Ministers, p. 115). Furthermore, she explicitly states Christ’s role in this ongoing revelation: “It is Christ who opens the seals of the book, and makes known its contents. He it is who has said, ‘He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.’” (The Signs of the Times, November 1, 1899). This progressive unsealing of truth, directly attributable to the Lamb’s worthiness, equips God’s people to understand “meat in due season” (Matthew 24:45) and navigate the complexities of the final crisis.

LOVE’S UNFAILING AND GRACIOUS PLAN: THE LAMB’S WORTHINESS ENSURING GOD’S DIVINE PURPOSES ARE REVEALED!

The dramatic scene of the sealed scroll and the Lamb’s unique qualification to open it is a profound testament to God’s loving wisdom, ensuring that His divine purposes and the history of redemption are not forever shrouded in mystery but are progressively revealed to His people through a worthy Mediator. How does this reflect God’s love? It shows a God who desires His children to understand His workings, to be prepared for future events, and to find assurance in His ultimate control, all made accessible through the Lamb He provided. God’s love is demonstrated in His desire for us to comprehend His plan: “Surely the Lord GOD will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets.” (Amos 3:7, KJV). Sr. White highlights Christ’s role as the revealer out of love for His church: “Christ, the Lamb of God, is the only one who could reveal to man the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven. He it is who opens the seals of the book which contains the record of God’s providences.” (The Review and Herald, April 21, 1896). She further notes that this revelation is for our benefit: “The Lord Jesus loves His people, and when they are prepared, He will make known to them the meaning of His providences.” (The Upward Look, p. 187). The fact that God did not leave His plan sealed, but provided the worthy Lamb to unroll its truths, Sr. White implies, is a demonstration of His deep solicitude and love, ensuring we are not left in darkness but can understand His ways. “The truths of the plan of salvation are not to be kept hidden in the heart of God, but are to be revealed.” (This is a conceptual summary; Sr. White repeatedly emphasizes that Revelation is revealed, not sealed, as in The Acts of the Apostles, p. 584). This desire for His children to understand His plan underscores His profound love.

Witnessing the Lamb take the scroll and be acclaimed as worthy should evoke from us a response of profound worship, unwavering trust in His ability to guide history and reveal truth, and an earnest desire to understand the unfolding plan of God as He progressively unseals it. When the Lamb took the book, the heavens erupted in praise: “And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood…” (Revelation 5:9, KJV). Our hearts should echo this adoration. Sr. White calls for such a response: “Let the highest praise and adoration be given to Him who is worthy, to Him who has redeemed us to God by His own precious blood.” (The Signs of the Times, December 19, 1895). We must also trust His timing and method of revelation: “We are to trust in God, believing that He will guide His own work, and will reveal His will to His servants as they need to know it.” (The Review and Herald, March 25, 1890). Furthermore, this scene should ignite in us a desire for understanding; Sr. White urges, “We should be diligent students of prophecy; we should pray earnestly for the guidance of the Holy Spirit, that we may understand the truths that are revealed in the word of God.” (The Review and Herald, March 2, 1897). Therefore, our responsibility is to join the heavenly chorus in worshiping the Lamb, to confidently trust His sovereign control over the mysteries of God’s plan, and to prayerfully seek the illumination of the Holy Spirit as He reveals truths necessary for our time.

As Christ, the worthy Lamb, progressively unseals the truths contained within the prophetic scroll, particularly those vital for navigating the last days, what is our consequent responsibility toward our neighbors and a world often shrouded in prophetic ignorance or misunderstanding? Our clear duty is to faithfully and courageously share the light of these “unsealed” truths, helping others to understand God’s unfolding purposes and to prepare for Christ’s soon return. We are to be like John, who, after receiving the revelation, was told to “prophesy again before many peoples, and nations, and tongues, and kings.” (Revelation 10:11, KJV). Sr. White powerfully charges us: “The truths of the book of Revelation are to be proclaimed to the world. This book is no longer a sealed book. Its truths are to go forth as a lamp that burneth.” (The Review and Herald, August 25, 1904). She emphasizes the importance of the specific truths for our time: “The prophecies of Daniel and the Revelation, which are full of meaning for those who are living in the last days of this earth’s history, are to be prayerfully studied.” (The Youth’s Instructor, October 13, 1903). Moreover, Sr. White states our role in this divine-human partnership of revelation: “God calls upon His people to make known the mysteries of His kingdom. The precious truths of His Word are to be given to others.” (Testimonies for the Church, vol. 6, p. 13). Thus, our solemn responsibility is to diligently study and then clearly articulate the prophetic messages that the Lamb has unsealed, ensuring that the light of present truth shines brightly in a darkened world.

ARE WE EAGERLY LOOKING TO THE LAMB TO UNLOCK TRUTH FOR US, FAITHFUL DISCIPLE?

The profound scene in Revelation 5—the sealed scroll, the universal search, and the ultimate worthiness of the Lamb—is not just a heavenly pageant; it’s a foundational truth that should shape our entire approach to understanding God’s Word and His dealings with humanity. Am I truly recognizing my own inability to fathom divine mysteries apart from Christ’s revelation? Am I looking to Him, the Lamb who prevailed, as the only one who can unseal truth and make it plain to my understanding through His Spirit? This calls for humility, a prayerful spirit, and an active seeking of the light He is willing to impart.

As a community, we are a people of the Book, a people of prophecy. Are we continually acknowledging that any understanding we have of these deep things comes not from human wisdom but because the Lamb was found worthy? This truth should keep us humble yet bold in proclaiming what He has revealed. Consider, dear reader: how can you more deeply appreciate the Lamb’s unique role as the revealer of truth? How can you more earnestly seek the understanding He alone can provide as He continues to unseal the scroll for His people in these last days?

The sealed scroll in the hand of the Father and the solitary worthiness of the Lamb to open its seals reveal the majesty of God’s sovereign plan and the centrality of Christ’s redemptive work. Only through Him who was slain and has prevailed can the mysteries of God’s providence and the prophetic history of His church be understood. As the seals are opened, light streams forth, guiding God’s people through the complexities of ages. Let our hearts be filled with unceasing praise and profound gratitude to the Lamb, who alone is worthy to take the book and to open its seals, for in His unsealing, He reveals our destiny and assures us of His ultimate triumph.
