IN CHRIST JESUS ALONE, OUR HOPE IS FOUND, OUR COMPLETE VICTORY WON!

“For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect.” (Hebrews 10:1, KJV)

FROM ANCIENT SHADOWS TO OUR LIVING, PRESENT REALITY!

Greetings, fellow pilgrims on the path of truth and dedicated messengers of the Most High! Today, our spiritual journey takes us to a pivotal juncture in salvation’s story: the magnificent transition from the shadowy types of the earthly sanctuary service to the radiant substance found in Jesus Christ, our true and eternal High Priest. This exploration is tailored for all who earnestly seek to comprehend the profound shift that occurred when Christ, our Lord, ascended to minister in the heavenly sanctuary. Drawing from the unerring King James Bible and the inspired pen of Ellen G. White, we will examine why we are no longer under the ceremonial types but look directly to Christ as our Advocate and Mediator. Our purpose is to grasp the liberating truth that frees us from ritualistic shadows and anchors our faith firmly in the living reality of His all-sufficient heavenly ministry.

THE FADING SHADOWS: CEREMONIAL TYPES DIVINELY POINTING TO THE COMING CHRIST!

The intricate system of sacrifices, priestly ministrations, and yearly ceremonies ordained for ancient Israel, though divinely appointed, was never intended to be an end in itself; rather, it served as a complex yet beautiful tableau of shadows, a prophetic curriculum designed to teach profound truths about the character of God and the coming Redeemer, Jesus Christ. These rites were temporary, like elaborate signposts pointing to a future, far greater reality. The Apostle Paul speaks of these ordinances as “a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ.” (Colossians 2:17, KJV). Ellen G. White eloquently confirms this purpose: “The rites and ceremonies of the Jewish dispensation were a prophetic portrayal of the gospel.” (The Acts of the Apostles, p. 14). She further clarifies that, “All the sacrificial offerings were typical of Christ.” (Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 352). The culmination of these types occurred at the cross; as Sr. White powerfully describes, “When Christ cried out, ‘It is finished,’ the veil of the temple was rent in twain… This was the signal that the types and ceremonies of the Jewish dispensation were forever at an end.” (The Spirit of Prophecy, vol. 3, p. 155). Thus, these shadows, having served their divine purpose in foreshadowing the Lamb of God and His atoning sacrifice, naturally receded when the glorious Substance to which they pointed was revealed in the person and work of Jesus.

SUBSTANCE REVEALED: CHRIST, OUR EVERLASTING HIGH PRIEST IN HEAVEN’S REALM!

With Christ’s triumphant ascension, the focus of God’s redemptive plan shifted decisively from the earthly sanctuary, with its symbolic services, to the heavenly sanctuary, where Christ Himself, the glorious Substance, ministers as our great and everlasting High Priest. He is not a mere successor to the Aaronic priesthood but the very reality to which that entire system testified. The writer to the Hebrews emphasizes His perpetual ministry: “But this man, because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood. Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.” (Hebrews 7:24-25, KJV). Sr. White clearly states this fulfillment: “Christ was the substance of all the types and shadows of the Old Testament scriptures.” (The Signs of the Times, June 21, 1899). She also highlights the current reality of His ministry: “The sanctuary in heaven is the great center of Christ’s work in behalf of men. It concerns every soul living upon the earth.” (The Great Controversy, p. 488). This is not a distant, inaccessible ministry; rather, as Sr. White quotes from the lesson, we understand that “He ever liveth to make intercession for us.” (The Desire of Ages, p. 667). Therefore, our faith is no longer directed towards earthly symbols but to the living Christ, the true High Priest, who embodies the fullness of God’s saving grace and power in the courts above.

NO LONGER BOUND: GLORIOUS FREEDOM FROM TYPES, DIRECT ACCESS THROUGH HIM ALONE!

The profound implication of Christ’s ascension and His inauguration as High Priest in the heavenly sanctuary is the believer’s liberation from the yoke of ceremonial types and the granting of direct, unmediated access to God through Him. We are no longer required to approach God through an earthly priesthood or a system of animal sacrifices; the way into the holiest has been opened by Christ Himself. The apostle encourages us: “Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.” (Hebrews 4:16, KJV). Sr. White beautifully articulates this newfound freedom and intimacy: “We have a High Priest who can be touched with the feeling of our infirmities.” (Steps to Christ, p. 93). She further emphasizes the exclusivity of this access: “Through Christ, guilty sinners may find access to God. Through Him alone can they receive pardon.” (The Signs of the Times, June 29, 1904). This direct pathway is a revolutionary aspect of the new covenant; as Sr. White explains, referring to Christ’s ministry, “The way into the holiest is laid open, and we are invited to enter.” (The Great Controversy, p. 489). Consequently, believers now look beyond any earthly ritual or human intermediary, fixing their gaze upon Jesus, the true Priest in the heavenly sanctuary, through whom we find not only forgiveness but also a deeply personal relationship with the Father.

THE PROPHETIC WARNING: CLINGING TO SUBSTANCE AMIDST END-TIME DECEPTIVE SHADOWS!

While believers now rejoice in the substance of Christ’s heavenly ministry, prophetic warnings indicate that in the last days, deceptive “shadows”—counterfeit systems of worship and mediation—will arise, seeking to divert humanity from the true High Priest. In light of these concepts, what is the prophetic antitype found? The prophetic antitype is the urgent end-time call to exclusively embrace Christ, the Substance, and His heavenly priesthood, consciously rejecting all humanly devised religious systems that act as misleading “shadows” or false mediators, especially as deceptions intensify. Christ Himself warned: “For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.” (Matthew 24:24, KJV). Revelation 13 describes an earthly power demanding worship, effectively setting up a counterfeit to Christ’s true mediatorial work. Sr. White directly addresses this danger: “Satan has laid his plans to obliterate the knowledge of the heavenly sanctuary, and to substitute a sanctuary of his own devising.” (Manuscript Releases, vol. 12, p. 386). She also warned, “The enemy will bring in false theories, such as the doctrine that there is no sanctuary. This is one of the points on which there will be a departing from the faith.” (Evangelism, p. 224). Therefore, the antitypical challenge for God’s people in the final conflict is to maintain an unswerving focus on the Substance, Christ Jesus in the true heavenly sanctuary, discerning and rejecting any earthly institution or ritual that claims mediatorial power, thereby standing firm against the powerful deceptions designed to obscure His unique and all-sufficient priesthood.

LOVE’S PERFECT DESIGN: THE ASTOUNDING SUPERIORITY OF CHRIST’S MINISTRY REVEALED!

The divinely orchestrated shift from the shadowy types of the earthly sanctuary to the living substance of Christ’s heavenly ministry is not merely a theological progression but a profound revelation of God’s perfect love and infinite wisdom, designed to bring humanity into a closer, more secure, and more spiritually intimate relationship with Himself. How does this transition reflect God’s loving design? It demonstrates His desire to provide a more excellent way, a Mediator who is not only divine but also fully acquainted with human frailty, thus offering a more accessible and efficacious path to salvation. The very fact that “God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved” (John 3:17, KJV) underscores this loving intent. Sr. White highlights the empathetic nature of our High Priest: “Jesus knows the burdens of every heart. He who has all power in heaven and earth can help us in our weakness.” (The Ministry of Healing, p. 71). She also emphasizes the superiority and loving provision of this new covenant ministry: “Christ’s sacrifice in behalf of man was full and complete. The condition of the atonement had been fulfilled.” (The Acts of the Apostles, p. 29). Furthermore, Sr. White explains the loving accessibility we now have: “Christ has made it possible for every soul to have a connection with God that is close and abiding.” (The Upward Look, p. 231). The move from intricate, burdensome rituals—which could never perfect the conscience—to a direct, personal relationship with a loving, empathetic High Priest in heaven, beautifully illustrates God’s progressive love, always seeking to draw His children nearer through a clearer revelation of His grace and a more effective means of reconciliation.

Given the glorious reality that we have moved beyond the shadows to the very Substance of Christ’s priestly ministry in heaven, what are our solemn responsibilities toward God? Our primary duty is to maintain an unwavering, intelligent faith fixed solely upon Jesus Christ, our true Mediator and High Priest, consciously rejecting any reliance on human-devised rituals, earthly intermediaries, or our own merits for salvation. We are exhorted to be “Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.” (Hebrews 12:2, KJV). Sr. White powerfully reinforces this singular focus: “We must look to Christ; we must resist the enemy as He resisted him. We must pray for strength from God, and it will be given us.” (Testimonies for the Church, vol. 1, p. 309). She also emphasizes the believer’s direct connection: “Every soul has the privilege of coming to Christ for himself, and of having a personal connection with him.” (The Signs of the Times, March 18, 1889). Furthermore, Sr. White urges a confident approach based on Christ’s merits, not shadowy forms: “Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. This is the privilege of every soul.” (The Review and Herald, November 17, 1904). Therefore, my responsibility, and ours collectively, is to diligently study His Word to understand His heavenly ministry, to cultivate a prayer life that approaches God directly through Him, and to live in moment-by-moment dependence on His intercession, ensuring that our spiritual gaze never wavers from the Substance to any distracting or deceptive shadow.

Recognizing the profound liberation and direct access to God that we have through Christ, our true High Priest, what then is our responsibility toward our neighbors who may still be entangled in shadowy forms of worship or unaware of this glorious Substance? Our clear duty is to lovingly, patiently, and intelligently guide them from any misleading or insufficient “shadows” to the all-sufficient Savior, Jesus Christ, who ministers for them in the heavenly sanctuary. We are commissioned to “preach the gospel to every creature” (Mark 16:15, KJV), and this good news includes the truth about Christ’s current, effective priestly work. Sr. White calls for this enlightenment: “Many have lost their way, because they have not a correct knowledge of the ministry of Christ in the heavenly sanctuary.” (The Spirit of Prophecy, vol. 4, p. 308). She emphasizes our role in sharing this specific light: “It is the work of God’s people now to lift up Jesus before the world, to present Him as the sinner’s only hope.” (The Review and Herald, January 11, 1887). Moreover, Sr. White encourages us to help others find this direct connection: “We are to lead souls to look to Jesus, not to men; they are to find in Him their personal Saviour.” (Evangelism, p. 493). Therefore, our responsibility extends beyond our personal understanding; we must become clear channels, through our words and our lives, demonstrating the joy, peace, and assurance that come from looking directly to Christ, the Substance, helping to free others from the bondage of empty rituals or human intermediaries and leading them into the glorious liberty of a direct relationship with their compassionate Heavenly Priest.

WHERE IS OUR TRUE FOCUS, DEAR FRIEND—ON THE SHADOW OR THE SUBSTANCE?

The transition from shadow to substance is not merely a historical event; it is a present reality that demands a constant re-evaluation of our spiritual focus. Am I, in my daily walk and worship, truly looking to Christ in the heavenly sanctuary, or am I inadvertently clinging to earthly forms, traditions, or even self-righteous “shadows” that obscure His all-sufficient ministry? This calls for introspection: Are my prayers directed with a clear understanding of His intercession? Does my assurance of salvation rest solely on His merits and advocacy, or do I subtly seek to add my own?

As a community,we champion the truth of the heavenly sanctuary. We must continually ask ourselves if we are effectively communicating the liberating power of looking to the Substance, Christ Jesus. Are we helping one another, and those we seek to reach, to move beyond any lingering reliance on external forms to a deep, personal, and transformative faith in our true High Priest? Consider, dear reader: what “shadows” might be subtly diverting your gaze from the glorious Substance? How can you more intentionally fix your eyes on Jesus, who “is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him”? (Hebrews 7:25, KJV).

The message is one of profound liberation and elevated faith. We are no longer bound by the types and shadows of a bygone era but are invited to behold and embrace the magnificent Substance—Jesus Christ, our compassionate and all-powerful High Priest in the heavenly sanctuary. His ministry is not a distant concept but a vibrant, ongoing reality that provides us with direct access to the throne of grace, assurance of pardon, and strength for daily living. Let this truth revolutionize our understanding and our experience. May our hearts and minds be steadfastly fixed on Him, the true Priest, the perfect Sacrifice, the only Mediator. In Christ alone, our hope is eternally secure, and our victory over sin is decisively won.
