“Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens; A minister of the sanctuary, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, and not man.” (Hebrews 8:1-2, KJV)
OUR ANCHOR HOLDS FIRM WITHIN THE VEIL, TRUE AND FAITHFUL BELIEVERS!
Greetings, dedicated heralds of truth! Our sacred quest today leads us into the very heart of celestial realities: the heavenly sanctuary, where Christ Jesus, our Lord, serves as Advocate and High Priest. This exploration, designed for all sincere seekers of divine understanding, will delve into the profound implications of His ministry, particularly as it relates to the solemn theme of judgment. Drawing deeply from the King James Bible and the inspired insights of Ellen G. White, we aim to illuminate Christ’s current work, a work that is not only our greatest hope but also the pivotal center of God’s end-time plan. Let us approach this awe-inspiring subject with the clarity, precision, and reverent sensitivity it deserves, seeking to grasp how His intercession provides both our assurance and our preparation for the divine scrutiny to come.
THE TRUE TABERNACLE: CHRIST GLORIOUSLY MINISTERING IN HEAVEN’S OWN SANCTUARY!
While earthly sanctuaries once served as symbolic expressions of God’s dwelling and His plan of salvation, the ascension of Christ shifted our focus to a far more glorious reality: the true tabernacle in heaven, pitched by God Himself, where our Lord ministers as the great High Priest, not with the blood of bulls and goats, but with His own. This celestial sanctuary is the command center of redemption’s work. The apostle Paul clearly directs our gaze heavenward: “For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us.” (Hebrews 9:24, KJV). Ellen G. White profoundly affirms this, stating, “Christ is now in the heavenly sanctuary, appearing in the presence of God for us.” (The Great Controversy, p. 489). She further emphasizes the centrality of this divine headquarters: “The sanctuary in heaven is the very center of Christ’s work in behalf of men.” (The Great Controversy, p. 488). Moreover, Sr. White reminds us of the divine origin and supreme nature of this place of ministry: “We have such an High Priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens, a minister of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, and not man.” (The Faith I Live By, p. 205). Thus, our understanding must transcend earthly types and shadows, anchoring our faith in the substantial, ongoing priestly ministry of Jesus in the heavenly sanctuary, the genuine nexus of God’s saving grace and sovereign authority.
OUR DIVINE ADVOCATE: CHRIST POWERFULLY PLEADING OUR CASE BEFORE THE ETERNAL FATHER!
Beyond His role as High Priest officiating in the heavenly sanctuary, Christ also serves as our personal and powerful Advocate, our divine defense attorney, constantly representing our interests before the throne of God, especially in the face of accusations from the adversary. If any individual sins, they have a steadfast representative: “My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.” (1 John 2:1, KJV). This advocacy is not a mere formality; it is an active, efficacious pleading based on His infinite merits. Sr. White declares with assurance, “As our great High Priest, He pleads His blood for us.” (The Desire of Ages, p. 667). She also emphasizes His unique position and authority: “He is our Advocate, pleading in our behalf before the Father.” (Testimonies for the Church, vol. 5, p. 470). Furthermore, Sr. White provides a beautiful depiction of this intercessory work: “Christ is standing as our advocate. He is the great High Priest, pleading in our behalf. His offering is complete, and as our advocate He executes His self-appointed work, holding before God the censer containing His own spotless merits and the prayers, the confessions, and the thanksgiving of His people.” (Sons and Daughters of God, p. 39). Therefore, despite our failings and the accuser’s charges, we have an all-sufficient Advocate whose perfect sacrifice and righteous character stand in our stead, ensuring that every penitent soul who claims His name finds mercy and grace.
THE JUDGMENT HOUR ARRIVES: HIS PRIESTLY WORK AND AWESOME DIVINE SCRUTINY!
While Christ’s ministry as High Priest and Advocate offers immense comfort and assurance, it is inextricably linked to the solemn reality of divine judgment—specifically, the investigative judgment, where the lives of all who have ever professed faith are reviewed before God, based on the records of heaven. This phase of His priestly work began when He entered the Most Holy Place of the heavenly sanctuary to make a final atonement for sin. The book of Revelation proclaims this critical time: “Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.” (Revelation 14:7, KJV). Sr. White explains this transition in Christ’s ministry: “Attended by heavenly angels, our great High Priest enters the holy of holies and there appears in the presence of God to engage in the last acts of His ministration in behalf of man—to perform the work of investigative judgment and to make an atonement for all who are shown to be entitled to its benefits.” (The Great Controversy, p. 480). She stresses the importance of grasping this truth: “The subject of the sanctuary and the investigative judgment should be clearly understood by the people of God.” (The Great Controversy, p. 488). Describing the process, Sr. White writes, “As the books of record are opened in the judgment, the lives of all who have believed on Jesus come in review before God.” (The Great Controversy, p. 483). This judgment is not to determine God’s omniscience, but to vindicate His justice before the universe and to affirm who, through genuine faith and repentance, has maintained a saving relationship with Christ, thereby being accounted worthy of eternal life. This understanding impels us to live with sober watchfulness, fully availing ourselves of Christ’s advocacy.
DAY OF ATONEMENT’S ECHO: HEAVEN’S SANCTUARY CLEANSED – THE MAJESTIC PROPHETIC ANTITYPE!
While the earthly sanctuary services provided types and shadows of heavenly realities, the annual Day of Atonement, with its solemn cleansing of the earthly sanctuary, stands as a particularly potent type, its antitype being Christ’s final mediatorial work of investigative judgment and the ultimate cleansing of the heavenly sanctuary from the record of sin. In light of these concepts, what is the prophetic antitype found? It is this very work of Christ in the Most Holy Place, which began at the end of the 2300-day/year prophecy of Daniel. The prophecy states, “And he said unto me, Unto two thousand and three hundred days; then shall the sanctuary be cleansed.” (Daniel 8:14, KJV). This cleansing is not of physical defilement, but of the records of sin. Daniel 7 describes this judgment scene: “I beheld till the thrones were cast down, and the Ancient of days did sit… thousand thousands ministered unto him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him: the judgment was set, and the books were opened.” (Daniel 7:9-10, KJV). Sr. White clearly identifies this antitypical work: “The cleansing of the sanctuary therefore involves a work of investigation,—a work of judgment. This work must be performed prior to the coming of Christ to redeem His people; for when He comes, His reward is with Him to give to every man according to his works.” (The Great Controversy, p. 422). She further explains, “As in the typical service the high priest cleansed the sanctuary by the blood of the sin offering, so in the great antitypical day of atonement, Christ, our great High Priest, is making an atonement for His people, and cleansing the sanctuary of heaven from the record of their sins.” (The Spirit of Prophecy, vol. 4, p. 266). This understanding of the antitypical Day of Atonement illuminates Christ’s current judicial ministry, affirming that we are now living in the great day of final reckoning and cleansing, urging us to ensure our cases are rightly represented by our Advocate.
LOVE’S ULTIMATE PLAN: HIS MINISTRY AS GOD’S MERCY AND PERFECT JUSTICE REVEALED!
Even as the themes of sanctuary and judgment might appear stern, they are, at their core, profound expressions of God’s infinite love, His meticulous plan to reconcile humanity to Himself while upholding the perfect justice of His universal government. How does Christ’s intricate ministry as Advocate and High Priest, culminating in the investigative judgment, reflect God’s profound love? It reveals a God who makes every provision for salvation, offering a perfect Mediator, while ensuring that the principles of righteousness are eternally vindicated before all created beings. God’s desire is not for condemnation, but for salvation: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16, KJV). Sr. White describes the loving nature of our Intercessor: “Jesus stands as our Mediator and Advocate, ready to hear the confession of the contrite, and to plead His own precious blood in their behalf.” (The Signs of the Times, August 12, 1889). She also highlights God’s character in this process: “God’s love for a fallen race is a peculiar manifestation of love—a love born of mercy; for human beings are all undeserving.” (Testimonies to Ministers and Gospel Workers, p. 154). Furthermore, Sr. White connects this ministry to the ultimate demonstration of God’s character: “The atonement of Christ was not made in order to induce God to love those whom He otherwise hated; it was not made to produce a love that was not in existence; but it was made as a manifestation of the love that was already in God’s heart.” (Selected Messages, Book 1, p. 394, this quote, though about the atonement broadly, shows the pre-existing love that motivates all of Christ’s mediatorial work). Christ’s ministry in the sanctuary, including the judgment, is thus a testament to a love so vast it provides an Advocate, so just it examines every case, and so merciful it offers pardon to every truly penitent soul, thereby satisfying both divine love and divine law.
In light of the profound truths concerning Christ’s ministry as our High Priest and Advocate, and the ongoing reality of the investigative judgment, a most solemn and personal question arises: What are my responsibilities toward God, who has made such infinite provision for my salvation? Our response must be one of heartfelt faith, sincere repentance, diligent obedience, and conscious preparation, living lives that honor our divine Representative. We are called to “hold fast our profession,” knowing we have “a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God.” (Hebrews 4:14, KJV). Sr. White exhorts us to active participation in our salvation: “We have a part to act, a work to do. We are to confess our sins, and by faith lay hold of the merits of Christ.” (The Review and Herald, March 4, 1890). She also stresses the importance of reflecting His character: “Those who would share the benefits of the Saviour’s mediation should permit nothing to interfere with their duty to perfect holiness in the fear of God.” (The Great Controversy, p. 488). Moreover, recognizing the judgment, Sr. White urges, “We should now be diligent in preparation, that we may have our robes of character washed and made white in the blood of the Lamb.” (Testimonies for the Church, vol. 3, p. 517). Therefore, my responsibility is not one of fearful anxiety, but of grateful cooperation with divine grace, continually availing myself of Christ’s advocacy through confession and repentance, seeking His strength for obedience, and living each day in readiness for His appearing and the final settlement of my case.
Just as our understanding of Christ’s sanctuary ministry and the judgment impels us to personal consecration, it also lays upon us a sacred responsibility toward our neighbors and a world largely unaware of these momentous, present truths. What, then, are my duties toward others in light of Christ’s role as our Advocate and the ongoing judgment? My primary responsibility is to share this vital, hope-filled message with clarity, urgency, and Christ-like compassion, pointing souls to our only Mediator and the path of preparation. The command is to proclaim the everlasting gospel, which includes the announcement: “…the hour of his judgment is come.” (Revelation 14:7, KJV). This is not a message of doom but a call to readiness. Sr. White emphasizes its importance: “The subject of the sanctuary was the key which unlocked the mystery of the disappointment of 1844. It opened to view a complete system of truth, connected and harmonious, showing that God’s hand had directed the great advent movement and revealing present duty as it brought to light the position and work of His people.” (The Great Controversy, p. 423). We are to reflect Christ’s intercessory spirit: “As Christ is the minister in the sanctuary above, so He calls upon us to be His ministers upon the earth, to reflect His character, and to show His compassionate love for the souls of men.” (The Signs of the Times, April 11, 1892). Further, Sr. White speaks of the saving nature of this truth: “The correct understanding of the ministration in the heavenly sanctuary is the foundation of our faith.” (Evangelism, p. 221). Thus, my duty extends to earnestly studying these truths myself so I can effectively communicate them, lovingly warning those in peril, and tenderly guiding them to Jesus, our all-sufficient High Priest and Advocate, who alone can bring them faultless before the throne of glory.
ARE WE TRULY AND DEEPLY CONNECTED TO OUR HIGH PRIEST, DEAR READER?
The profound realities of Christ’s ministry in the heavenly sanctuary, His advocacy, and the ongoing investigative judgment should cause each of us to pause and reflect deeply. Am I truly availing myself, day by day, of the intercession of my great High Priest? Is my life characterized by a conscious awareness that my record is passing in review before God?
