UNDERSTANDING OUR TOMORROW, TODAY!

“But I will shew thee that which is noted in the scripture of truth: and there is none that holdeth with me in these things, but Michael your prince.” (Daniel 10:21, KJV)

CHARTING THE COURSE TO ETERNITY’S SHORE

Welcome back, fellow navigators of prophecy! We rejoin the prophet Daniel, still reeling from the awe-inspiring, physically taxing encounter with the celestial messenger Gabriel. Having addressed the delay and reassured Daniel of heaven’s immediate attention and his beloved status, Gabriel now pivots to the core purpose of his arduous journey. No longer dealing with preliminaries, he makes a direct, profound statement outlining the next phase of revelation: he has come specifically to unveil the future, to map out the events that will impact God’s people right down to the end times. As recorded in Daniel 10:14, the mission is explicit: “Now I am come to make thee understand what shall befall thy people in the latter days.” Today, we will dissect this crucial mission, exploring why God reveals the future, the scope of this revelation extending into Daniel 11 and 12, and the immense hope embedded within foreknowledge. Prepare to gaze down the stream of time!

THE EXPLICIT MISSION: UNDERSTANDING THE END GAME!

After the intense experiences and reassurances of Daniel 10, Gabriel gets straight to the point. His declaration, “Now I am come to make thee understand what shall befall thy people in the latter days: for yet the vision is for many days” (Daniel 10:14), is the thesis statement for the detailed prophecies that follow in chapters 11 and 12. Notice the key elements: “make thee understand”—emphasizing clarity and comprehension, not just prediction; “what shall befall thy people”—highlighting the relevance and focus on God’s community; and “in the latter days”—pinpointing the timeframe stretching far beyond Daniel’s own era to the very end of prophetic history. This wasn’t just about satisfying Daniel’s intellectual curiosity; it was about equipping God’s people with necessary foresight. Ellen G. White connects this revelation directly to Daniel’s earlier intercession: “As he wrestled with God in prayer, Gabriel appeared to him to give him light concerning the purposes of God. The angel unfolded to Daniel the vision of the great powers of the earth, and especially of the last great struggle before the establishment of God’s everlasting kingdom.” (Prophets and Kings, p. 547). The explanation was an answer to fervent prayer, designed to illuminate the path ahead, including its final, decisive conflicts.

SCOPE OF THE VISION: FROM PERSIA TO PERPETUITY (DANIEL 11-12)

The promise to explain what happens “in the latter days” serves as the direct introduction to the intricate prophecies of Daniel 11 and 12. Chapter 11 unfolds a remarkably detailed account of successive political and military struggles involving the kingdoms that followed Medo-Persia—particularly the Hellenistic kingdoms (Ptolemies and Seleucids) and ultimately, the rise and actions of papal and other latter-day powers. Chapter 12 then brings the timeline to its climax, speaking of the time of trouble, the resurrection, and the final rewards for the righteous. Sr. White describes the impact of this revelation: “In answer to his earnest petition, light was given that had not before been received. The curtain was lifted, and Daniel was permitted to look down along the stream of time to the close of earth’s history. Terrible scenes of turmoil, conflict, and revolution were presented to him, and he was shown the final victory of the Prince of princes and the establishment of His everlasting kingdom.” (The Sanctified Life, p. 51). This panoramic view, stretching across centuries and culminating in eternal resolution, demonstrates God’s comprehensive grasp of history and His willingness to share crucial aspects of His plan with His people. While the detailed unfolding of future conflicts might seem daunting, the very act of revealing these events serves a profoundly encouraging and faith-building purpose.

THE PURPOSE OF PROPHETIC REVELATION

Why would God, through Gabriel, unveil centuries of conflict, persecution, and turmoil? Does He intend to frighten His people? Quite the contrary. Foreknowledge serves several vital purposes. Firstly, it prepares believers for future trials, preventing them from being overwhelmed by surprise or disillusionment when difficulties arise. Jesus Himself said, “Now I tell you before it come, that, when it is come to pass, ye may believe that I am he” (John 13:19). Secondly, fulfilled prophecy powerfully validates God’s sovereignty and the reliability of His Word. Seeing history unfold as foretold builds unshakable faith. Thirdly, knowing the end of the story—the “final victory of the Prince of princes” (The Sanctified Life, p. 51)—provides enduring hope and courage to persevere through the intervening struggles. Prophecy is God’s roadmap, assuring us that He knows the way, He controls the timeline, and He guarantees the destination for the faithful. It’s not meant to be a crystal ball for idle speculation, but a foundation for steadfast faith and holy living in light of the end.

ANGELIC STRENGTH AND DIVINE TRUTH

The significance of the message is underscored by the nature of the messenger. Gabriel, aided by Michael, represents the highest echelons of heavenly power and authority engaged in bringing this truth. Psalm 103:20 speaks of God’s angels as those who “excel in strength, that do his commandments, hearkening unto the voice of his word.” These are not ethereal, powerless beings; they are mighty agents capable of engaging in cosmic conflict and executing God’s will. Their involvement signifies the immense importance God places on this prophetic revelation reaching humanity. Furthermore, the assurance given to Elisha’s terrified servant resonates here: “Fear not: for they that be with us are more than they that be with them” (2 Kings 6:16). Knowing that powerful, holy angels are deeply involved in God’s communication and the protection of His people provides immense comfort. The strength of the messenger reinforces the certainty and reliability of the message concerning the latter days. God uses His most trusted and powerful agents to deliver truths that shape the destiny of His people.

THE SPECIFIC APPLICATION OF THE PROPHECY

Gabriel explicitly states the explanation concerns “what shall befall thy people” (Daniel 10:14). In the immediate context, “thy people” refers to Daniel’s kin, the Jewish nation. The prophecies of Daniel 11 clearly detail events impacting Palestine and the Jewish people under Hellenistic and Roman rule. However, in the broader scope of salvation history, “thy people” extends to encompass spiritual Israel—all who align themselves with God through faith, particularly those living “in the latter days.” The struggles, persecutions, deceptions, and ultimate deliverance depicted hold profound relevance for God’s remnant church navigating the final stages of earth’s history. The focus remains deeply personal and communal; this isn’t abstract forecasting but vital intelligence for the citizens of God’s kingdom throughout time, especially as the final conflict looms. Understanding these prophecies becomes crucial for identifying truth versus error and remaining faithful amidst end-time pressures.

HOW DOES REVEALING A TROUBLED FUTURE SHOW GOD’S LOVE?

It might seem counterintuitive, but revealing future turmoil is actually an act of profound love. Imagine a loving parent sending their child on a long, potentially hazardous journey. Would it be more loving to keep silent about the dangers, letting the child be caught unaware? Or would it be more loving to provide a map, point out the difficult stretches, warn about pitfalls, and assure the child of a safe arrival if they follow the instructions? God, as our loving Heavenly Father, chooses the latter. By revealing the “terrible scenes of turmoil, conflict, and revolution,” He isn’t trying to scare us, but to prepare us. More importantly, He doesn’t just show the struggle; He reveals “the final victory… and the establishment of His everlasting kingdom.” (The Sanctified Life, p. 51). Love equips, forewarns, and provides ultimate hope. By showing us the end from the beginning, God demonstrates His sovereign control and assures us that the struggles are temporary, but His kingdom and our place within it (if faithful) are eternal. That assurance, born of foreknowledge, is a gift of His infinite love.

Given that God, through mighty angels, has provided detailed explanations of what will happen “in the latter days,” my responsibility toward Him is clear. Firstly, I must take these prophecies seriously. They are not optional reading or mere historical curiosities. They are divinely inspired messages demanding my attention. Secondly, I must engage in diligent, prayerful study to “understand” them, just as Gabriel intended for Daniel. This involves comparing scripture with scripture, seeking the Holy Spirit’s guidance, and utilizing the sound interpretive principles preserved within the Advent movement. Thirdly, I must allow these prophecies to shape my faith and actions. Knowing the future should lead to greater watchfulness, earnest preparation, and unwavering trust in God’s ultimate control, mirroring Daniel’s own response of seeking God even more earnestly after receiving visions. As Sr. White noted, the light came in answer to Daniel’s “earnest petition” and wrestling in prayer (The Sanctified Life, p. 51; Prophets and Kings, p. 547). My responsibility is to engage with God’s prophetic word with similar earnestness and allow it to anchor my soul in these tumultuous times.

If God lovingly provided foresight about the “latter days” for “His people,” then my responsibility toward my neighbor—especially my fellow believers and those God is calling—is to share this vital information. We are living in the very time period these prophecies illuminate most intensely. Sharing the understanding gleaned from Daniel 11 and 12, within the broader context of the Great Controversy, is not optional; it’s a sacred duty. It involves helping others see God’s hand in history, identify the powers at play in the final conflict, understand the issues at stake (like the Sabbath, the Mark of the Beast), and find hope in the promised deliverance and Christ’s soon return. Sr. White emphasized that the light Daniel received was crucial (The Sanctified Life, p. 51). We who have received further light on these prophecies are obligated to let it shine. This requires not just knowledge, but wisdom, patience, and love in explaining these sometimes complex and sensitive truths, always aiming to build faith and prepare others for what is to come, rather than causing unnecessary fear.

LIVING FAITHFULLY IN THE LATTER DAYS

Gabriel’s explicit statement in Daniel 10:14 serves as a divine mandate to understand the future He has chosen to reveal. The detailed prophecies of Daniel 11 and 12, given in response to earnest prayer, are God’s gift to prepare His people for the end times. They provide a framework for understanding history, identifying key players in the final conflict, and anchoring our hope in the certainty of Christ’s ultimate victory. These prophecies are part of our spiritual DNA. How are we engaging with them today? Are we merely aware of them, or are we actively studying them, praying for understanding, and allowing them to shape our worldview and our witness? Let’s consider specific applications: How can understanding the historical progression in Daniel 11 help us discern current geopolitical or religious trends? How does the promise of deliverance in Daniel 12:1 encourage us amidst present trials? May we embrace our responsibility to be students and faithful sharers of these “latter day” truths, living with courage and conviction as we await the establishment of His everlasting kingdom. This focuses on the specific purpose of Gabriel’s communication following the cosmic conflict: to make Daniel understand the future trajectory of history, particularly as it impacts God’s people in the “latter days.” This revelation, spanning Daniel 11 and 12, was given not to induce fear but to foster preparation, build faith through fulfilled prophecy, and provide unshakeable hope in God’s sovereign control and ultimate victory. Delivered by mighty angelic messengers, these truths demand our serious attention, prayerful study, and faithful application. As we navigate the complexities of the end times, may we, like Daniel, seek to understand God’s revealed plan and share its light and hope with courage and clarity.
