THE EARTH IS EMPTY—AND THE RIGHTEOUS REIGN

After the second coming of Christ, the scene shifts dramatically. The wicked are slain (Revelation 19:21), the righteous are taken to Heaven (1 Thessalonians 4:17), and Satan is “bound” for a thousand years in a desolate earth. “And he laid hold on the dragon… and bound him a thousand years” (Revelation 20:2). This is not a chain of iron—it’s a chain of circumstance. With no one left to deceive, Satan is imprisoned in a wasteland, forced to contemplate the ruin of his rebellion. This contrasts sharply with the righteous: “They lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years” (Revelation 20:4). Sr. White writes, “During the thousand years between the first and second resurrections the judgment of the wicked takes place.” (The Great Controversy, p. 660). While Satan is silenced, the saints are seated in heavenly courts, confirming the justice of God’s decisions.

THE BOOKS ARE OPENED—AND THE CASES REVIEWED

John sees thrones. “And judgment was given unto them” (Revelation 20:4). This is the second phase of judgment—the review of the wicked. It is not to determine guilt but to confirm it, offering transparency to the universe. Every rebellious act, every rejected mercy, every hard word and hidden motive is reviewed. This reinforces a key distinction: God doesn’t destroy arbitrarily. The destruction of the wicked is not vengeance—it is verified righteousness. Sr. White says, “God will open before them the history of His providence… Every question of truth and error in the long-standing controversy is made plain.” (The Great Controversy, p. 662). Justice will not only be done—it will be seen to be done.

THE SECOND RESURRECTION—AND THE FINAL RECKONING

At the end of the thousand years, Satan is loosed. The wicked dead are raised: “But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished” (Revelation 20:5). Together, Satan and the resurrected lost form a final rebellion. “They went up… and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city” (v. 9). But there is no battle—only fire from Heaven. “And fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them.” This is the second death—eternal, complete, irreversible. Sr. White writes, “The fire that consumes the wicked purifies the earth. Every trace of the curse is swept away.” (The Great Controversy, p. 674). Hell is not eternal torment—it is eternal destruction. Love could not permit sin to live forever.

THE NEW EARTH—A WORLD MADE NEW, A HOME RESTORED

Then comes the climax of hope: “And I saw a new heaven and a new earth” (Revelation 21:1). The first earth is passed away—not annihilated but cleansed and renewed. The Holy City descends. “Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men” (v. 3). Eden is restored. God’s presence returns. In contrast to sin’s brokenness, this world will have no more tears, no more death, no more pain (v. 4). Sr. White rejoices, “All that was lost by sin is restored. Not only man, but the earth is redeemed.” (Education, p. 302). The plan of redemption ends where it began—in a perfect paradise, under the rule of a loving God.

GOD’S LOVE—THE STORYLINE FROM GENESIS TO GLORY

The entire arc of Scripture—creation, fall, redemption, restoration—culminates here. “He that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new” (Revelation 21:5). God’s love does not merely save souls—it restores all of creation. The scars of sin are gone. The shadow of Satan is erased. The universe breathes peace again. Sr. White reflects, “Pain cannot exist in the atmosphere of heaven. There will be no more tears, no funeral trains, no badges of mourning.” (The Great Controversy, p. 676). Every promise will be fulfilled—not in theory, but in sight. Blessed are those in the first resurrection (Revelation 20:6). That resurrection is not by luck, but by loyalty. I must now decide if I will follow Christ completely—through trial, through testing, through truth. “To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life” (Revelation 2:7). Sr. White urges, “Now is the time to prepare. We must be emptied of self, and clothed with the righteousness of Christ.” (Testimonies for the Church, vol. 1, p. 353). Heaven is not for the half-hearted. The gates of the New Jerusalem are open wide—but people must be invited. “The Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come” (Revelation 22:17). I am the voice of the Bride today. I must live like Heaven is real and love like Hell is real. Sr. White writes, “Let your light so shine that others may be led to glorify your Father.” (Testimonies for the Church, vol. 6, p. 438). No invitation is more urgent. No destiny more glorious.

A THOUSAND YEARS TO JUDGE—AN ETERNITY TO REJOICE

The Millennium is not myth—it’s the hinge between judgment and joy. It settles every question, silences every doubt, and prepares the universe for eternity. The fire purifies. The city descends. The redeemed rejoice. And the One who sat on the throne wipes away every tear. The new earth is not wishful thinking—it’s our promised inheritance. Jesus has gone to prepare a place. He will come again. And when He does, sin will not rise again (Nahum 1:9). The redeemed shall walk with God. Eden will bloom once more. And we shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
