THE LAW, THE LIONS & THE LORD!

THE DECEPTION OF LAWS AND THE TRAP OF PRIDE

The Medo-Persian Empire was now in charge—but the challenges for God’s people remained. Daniel, now over eighty years old, had risen to power again due to his “excellent spirit” (Daniel 6:3). But that excellence stirred jealousy. In contrast to Darius’s admiration, the governors and princes plotted Daniel’s downfall. They could find no fault in his work, so they turned to his worship. “We shall not find any occasion against this Daniel, except we find it against him concerning the law of his God” (Daniel 6:5). This contrast—Daniel’s faithfulness versus the officials’ deceit—exposes the timeless conflict between obedience to God and allegiance to man. Sr. White reflects, “Daniel’s blameless conduct excited the jealousy of the men in power… they determined to bring about his death.” (Prophets and Kings, p. 539). Human pride sought a legal trap; divine fidelity would soon triumph.

A DECREE SIGNED IN VANITY—AND A PRAYER OPENED IN FAITH

The plan was cunning. Convince the king to sign a law that no one could petition any god or man for thirty days, save Darius. The penalty? A lion’s den. The law appealed to the king’s ego and was sealed irrevocably. Daniel heard of the decree—and immediately opened his windows. “He kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed… as he did aforetime” (Daniel 6:10). In contrast to compromise, Daniel practiced consistency. Sr. White notes, “The prophet boldly and openly acknowledged the God of heaven, even in the face of death.” (Prophets and Kings, p. 540). Daniel didn’t protest or hide—he prayed. His allegiance to God outweighed every earthly consequence. Faith doesn’t hide in crisis—it shines.

INTO THE DEN—AND INTO THE PRESENCE OF ANGELS

Despite the king’s anguish, the law stood. Daniel was cast into the den. Darius, trapped by his own decree, spent the night fasting. At dawn, he cried out, “O Daniel… is thy God, whom thou servest continually, able to deliver thee from the lions?” (Daniel 6:20). The reply thundered with divine vindication: “My God hath sent his angel, and hath shut the lions’ mouths” (Daniel 6:22). Contrast the pit’s threat with Heaven’s peace. The lions roared, but God ruled. Sr. White explains, “God did not prevent Daniel’s enemies from casting him into the lion’s den; He permitted evil angels and wicked men thus far to accomplish their purpose. But it was that He might make the deliverance of His servant more marked.” (Prophets and Kings, p. 543). Sometimes God allows us to fall into danger so the glory of His rescue shines brighter.

GOD’S LOVE THROUGH LOCKED JAWS AND UNLOCKED FAITH

In the silence of the lion’s den, Daniel wasn’t alone. The God who created lions commanded them to lie still. The real miracle wasn’t the quiet lions—but the active angel. God’s love reached into the pit, not just to preserve life, but to reward loyalty. “Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him” (Psalm 91:14). Sr. White reveals, “The Lord wrought for His servant. Not one hair of his head was hurt.” (Prophets and Kings, p. 544). His love is not distant—it enters the den. Daniel’s strength was not in defiance, but in devotion. He “served God continually” (Daniel 6:16). I must do the same—not just on Sabbaths, but daily, in prayer, in courage, in consistency. My responsibility is to live faithfully when no one watches—and even more so when everyone does. Sr. White urges, “The greatest want of the world is the want of men who will not be bought or sold.” (Education, p. 57). That begins with me—kneeling like Daniel. Daniel’s trial turned into Darius’s testimony. “I make a decree,” the king proclaimed, “that in every dominion of my kingdom men tremble and fear before the God of Daniel” (Daniel 6:26). What Daniel did in private, God honored in public. When we stand for truth, others will witness deliverance. Sr. White writes, “The deliverance of Daniel was to be a testimony to all generations.” (Prophets and Kings, p. 544). Let my life be a living parable—a demonstration of grace under fire.

WHEN LAWS CHANGE, FAITH MUST NOT

This story is more than history—it’s prophecy. A time is coming when human laws will again oppose God’s commandments. The issue may not be lions, but it will be loyalty. Will we cave to pressure or pray with windows open? The test of Daniel is the test of the remnant. God does not call us to win popularity contests—but to win the crown of life. Daniel didn’t escape the lion’s den—he entered it and overcame. God didn’t remove the danger; He entered it with him. Today, our lions may roar in the form of cultural opposition, workplace discrimination, or legal threats. But if we serve God continually, we can trust that He will shut the mouths of every threat. The same God who stood with Daniel will stand with us—and every den becomes a sanctuary when Jesus is near.
