AGE MEETS ETERNITY IN THE TEMPLE

Standing in Solomon’s colonnade, Jesus uttered words that cracked the very foundation of Jewish identity. He did not say, “I was.” He said, “I AM.” With that eternal name, He shattered assumptions and declared His divinity. This blog explores how Jesus revealed His supremacy over Abraham—and what that means for us who wrestle with time, heritage, and faith.

A GLORIOUS HERITAGE MISUNDERSTOOD

The Jews claimed spiritual security in their descent from Abraham. “We be Abraham’s seed,” they insisted (John 8:33). But Jesus confronted their confidence: “If ye were Abraham’s children, ye would do the works of Abraham” (John 8:39). Sr. White warns, “Profession was worthless… Their spirit and works proved them to be Satan’s children” (The Desire of Ages, p. 466). Genealogy cannot replace obedience. Descent without devotion is deception.

A TRUTH TOO STRONG FOR TRADITION

Jesus told them the truth—and they hated Him for it. “Ye seek to kill me, a man that hath told you the truth” (John 8:40). Truth exposes counterfeit religion. Sr. White writes, “They had turned from the light, and it had become darkness to them” (The Desire of Ages, p. 466). When tradition becomes a mask, light becomes a threat.

THE JOY OF ABRAHAM—AND THE SHOCK OF THE CROWD

“Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad” (John 8:56). Jesus referenced Abraham’s prophetic vision of the Messiah. But the people could only see the carpenter’s son. Sr. White notes, “The Pharisees were speechless. The eternal presence had been revealed” (The Desire of Ages, p. 469). They saw a man—but missed the God-Man.

THE NAME THAT STANDS ABOVE TIME

“Before Abraham was, I am” (John 8:58). With these words, Jesus claimed equality with Jehovah. Not past tense. Present eternal. Sr. White declares, “He announced Himself to be the self-existent One… God over all, blessed forever” (The Desire of Ages, p. 469). The temple heard eternity speak—and responded with stones.

God’s love speaks truth even when rejected. Jesus revealed His divine identity not to crush, but to call. “He did not call them to believe without evidence,” Sr. White says. “His words bore the impress of heaven” (The Desire of Ages, p. 469). Love reveals, even when it risks rejection. I must recognize Christ not only as Redeemer, but as eternal God. “To know Him is life eternal” (John 17:3). My worship must rise beyond rituals and recognize His lordship. Sr. White urges, “We are to know Him as He is revealed in His word” (The Desire of Ages, p. 469). To know “I AM” is to trust without fear. Just as Jesus confronted comfortable error with love, I must speak truth in grace. Sr. White writes, “Christian love… is quick to discern penitence, ready to forgive” (The Desire of Ages, p. 462). Like Abraham, I must rejoice in the day of Christ—and help others see it through Scripture, prayer, and compassion.

WHEN GOD SPEAKS, DROP YOUR STONES

The temple audience picked up stones. But Abraham had picked up faith. When Jesus declares, “I AM,” we must not argue—we must adore. May we lay down our resistance and lift up our praise. For before Abraham was, He is—and forever shall be.
