White describes it as impacting over four million square miles, spreading across Europe, Africa, and America (The Great Controversy, p. 304). This catastrophic event was a clear warning, urging humanity to turn to God. God unleashes such upheavals to awaken slumbering hearts to His sovereign call. “For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places” (Matthew 24:7, KJV). Through inspired counsel we are told, “… terrible earthquake ever recorded. Known as the earthquake of Lisbon, it extended to Europe, Africa, and America. It was felt in Greenland, the West Indies, Madeira …” (From Here to Forever, p. 189, 1982). The inspired pen adds, “The earthquake happened on a holyday, when the churches and convents were full of people, very few of whom escaped” (From Here to Forever, p. 190, 1982). Such tremors echo heaven’s plea for repentance, shaking not just soil but souls toward redemption. As Mark 13:24-26 states, “The sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light,” connecting this event to a series of prophetic markers. The mysterious darkening of the sun on May 19, 1780, marked the “Dark Day,” fulfilling Christ’s words in Mark 13:24. This event followed the tribulation of 1260 years of papal persecution, which ended in 1798 (The Great Controversy, p. 306). The sun’s darkening and the moon’s failure to shine captivated us, emphasizing the urgency of preparing for Christ’s return. Heaven veils its light to pierce the veil of indifference, summoning us to eternal light. “For the stars of heaven and the constellations thereof shall not give their light: the sun shall be darkened in his going forth, and the moon shall not cause her light to shine” (Isaiah 13:10, KJV). In Maranatha a passage reminds us, “… the dark day of May 19, 1780—a most unaccountable darkening of the whole visible heavens and atmosphere in New England.”—R. M. Devens, Our First Century, p. 89 (p. 150, 1976). From Here to Forever we read, “… 19, 1780, stands in history as ‘The Dark Day.’ Since the time of Moses no darkness of equal density, extent, and duration has ever been recorded. The description of this event, as given by eyewitnesses, is but an echo of the words of the Lord, recorded by the prophet Joel, forty centuries in advance: ‘The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the Lord come’” (p. 192, 1982). On November 13, 1833, the most extensive meteoric shower in history occurred, fulfilling the prophecy in Matthew 24:29 and Revelation 6:13. A prophetic voice declares, “November 13, 1833, the most extensive and wonderful display of falling stars ever recorded. ‘Never did rain fall much thicker than the meteors fell toward the earth …’” (From Here to Forever, p. 208, 1982). Early Writings reveals, “… the prophetic periods would run out, and to the signs which showed Christ near, even at the doors. Many shepherds of the flock, who professed to love Jesus, said that they had no opposition to the preaching of Christ’s coming, but they objected to the definite time” (p. 233, 1882). The Great Controversy affirms, “… the prophets or from the signs of the times. As worldly hopes and ambitions filled the heart, love for God and faith in His word had grown cold; and when the advent movement was presented, it only aroused their unbelief” (p. 380, 1911). These omens overflow with affection, transforming dread into doorways of deliverance. God’s love is evident in the evidence cycle of these events. He asserts His authority through prophecy, provides evidence through natural phenomena, and offers commentary through scripture and inspired writings. These signs remind us that God is not distant but deeply involved in guiding humanity toward redemption, so how do these signals now summon us to daily devotion?

READY ACTION: FAITH FIRES UP!

Personally, these events challenge me to live with purpose, aligning my actions with God’s word. I find strength in Sr. White’s counsel: “The whole world is opening to the gospel” (The Great Controversy, p. 632). This motivates me to share His message. Talk …” (p. 424, 1954). Such stirrings spark stewardship, binding individual zeal to communal flame. Together, we can be a light in a world searching for hope, but what ultimate echo rings from these heralds?
