“And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring;” (Luke 21:25, KJV).
ABSTRACT
The article delves into the dramatic prophetic signs announcing Christ’s triumphant second coming, from the earth-shaking Lisbon earthquake to the eerie Dark Day, the spectacular falling stars, and the heavens rolling up like a scroll, all weaving a tapestry of divine warnings that spotlight God’s boundless love and the urgent sealing work in Revelation 7. These historical fulfillments jolt us toward spiritual vigilance, revealing mercy in every tremor and shadow, while calling the community to collective readiness, personal purpose, and shared watchfulness as the advent draws inescapably near, blending awe with an invitation to align hearts with eternal hope.
SIGNS LEADING TO THE SEALING WORK
The Bible presents powerful signs that herald Christ’s second coming, urging humanity to prepare spiritually for this pivotal event. These signs—earthquakes, darkness, falling stars, and the heavens departing as a scroll—highlight the progression of prophecy and the sealing work described in Revelation 7. Christ Himself outlined these markers, asserting His return’s nearness through unmistakable heavenly disruptions that demand our attention. “And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?” (Matthew 24:3, KJV). In Christ’s Object Lessons we read, “The signs which He Himself gave of His coming have been fulfilled, and by the teaching of God’s word we may know that His coming is near, even at the doors” (p. 226, 1900). A prophetic voice once wrote, “So now we are given warning of Christ’s second coming and of the destruction to come, and we are counseled to flee from the wrath to come” (The Desire of Ages, p. 634, 1898). These divine signals stir the soul, pressing us to anchor in truth amid the unfolding drama. Let us explore how these phenomena reflect God’s love and serve as a call to readiness, but what monumental quake first thundered this message across the globe?
QUAKE ROCKS: WAKE-UP SHAKE!
The prophecy in Revelation 6:12 identifies a great earthquake as the first sign leading to the second advent. This prophecy was fulfilled on November 1, 1755, with the Lisbon earthquake. Ellen G. White describes it as impacting over four million square miles, spreading across Europe, Africa, and America (The Great Controversy, p. 304). This catastrophic event was a clear warning, urging humanity to turn to God. God unleashes such upheavals to awaken slumbering hearts to His sovereign call. “For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places” (Matthew 24:7, KJV). Through inspired counsel we are told, “… terrible earthquake ever recorded. Known as the earthquake of Lisbon, it extended to Europe, Africa, and America. It was felt in Greenland, the West Indies, Madeira …” (From Here to Forever, p. 189, 1982). The inspired pen adds, “The earthquake happened on a holyday, when the churches and convents were full of people, very few of whom escaped” (From Here to Forever, p. 190, 1982). Such tremors echo heaven’s plea for repentance, shaking not just soil but souls toward redemption. As Mark 13:24-26 states, “The sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light,” connecting this event to a series of prophetic markers. The Lisbon earthquake reminds us of God’s mercy in forewarning His people. It reflects His love by providing opportunities to repent and align our lives with His will. Just as the earthquake shook the world physically, it calls us to examine our spiritual foundations, yet how did a midday blackout next veil the skies in prophetic hush?
DARK DAWN: HEAVEN’S SHROUD!
The mysterious darkening of the sun on May 19, 1780, marked the “Dark Day,” fulfilling Christ’s words in Mark 13:24. This event followed the tribulation of 1260 years of papal persecution, which ended in 1798 (The Great Controversy, p. 306). The sun’s darkening and the moon’s failure to shine captivated us, emphasizing the urgency of preparing for Christ’s return. Heaven veils its light to pierce the veil of indifference, summoning us to eternal light. “For the stars of heaven and the constellations thereof shall not give their light: the sun shall be darkened in his going forth, and the moon shall not cause her light to shine” (Isaiah 13:10, KJV). In Maranatha a passage reminds us, “… the dark day of May 19, 1780—a most unaccountable darkening of the whole visible heavens and atmosphere in New England.”—R. M. Devens, Our First Century, p. 89 (p. 150, 1976). From Here to Forever we read, “… 19, 1780, stands in history as ‘The Dark Day.’ Since the time of Moses no darkness of equal density, extent, and duration has ever been recorded. The description of this event, as given by eyewitnesses, is but an echo of the words of the Lord, recorded by the prophet Joel, forty centuries in advance: ‘The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the Lord come’” (p. 192, 1982). This shroud compels introspection, banishing complacency with shadows of coming glory. This phenomenon underscores God’s love by drawing attention to His plan. The darkness served as a metaphor for spiritual awakening, encouraging us to seek the light of truth amidst uncertainty. How often do we ignore signs of divine guidance in our own lives, or what fiery cascade then lit the night with judgment’s preview?
STARS PLUNGE: SKY’S FIREWORKS!
On November 13, 1833, the most extensive meteoric shower in history occurred, fulfilling the prophecy in Matthew 24:29 and Revelation 6:13. Sr. White refers to this event as a spectacular fulfillment of scripture (The Great Controversy, p. 333). The falling stars, a breathtaking celestial display, bolstered faith in God’s word and served as a profound reminder of the coming judgment. God scatters stars like figs to harvest awe and urgency in our gaze upward. “And all the host of heaven shall be dissolved, and the heavens shall be rolled together as a scroll: and all their host shall fall down, as the leaf falleth off from the vine, and as a falling fig from the fig tree” (Isaiah 34:4, KJV). Through inspired counsel we learn, “November 13, 1833, there was the most wonderful display of falling stars ever beheld by men. Again thousands believed that the day of judgment had come” (The Story of Jesus, p. 176, ?). A prophetic voice declares, “November 13, 1833, the most extensive and wonderful display of falling stars ever recorded. ‘Never did rain fall much thicker than the meteors fell toward the earth …’” (From Here to Forever, p. 208, 1982). These streaks ignite conviction, turning terror into testimony of His nearness. This event illustrates God’s creative power and His love for humanity. By orchestrating such awe-inspiring signs, He calls us to consider His majesty and prepare for the day when “every eye shall see Him” (Revelation 1:7), but when will the very firmament finally furl away in cosmic applause?
SKIES ROLL: GRAND FINALE!
The final sign, described in Psalm 50:3-4, depicts the heavens departing as a scroll. Sr. White vividly describes this event, saying, “Our God shall come, and shall not keep silence: a fire shall devour before Him” (The Great Controversy, pp. 641-642). This dramatic scene signals the end of earthly history and the beginning of eternity. The heavens rolling together reflect the culmination of God’s warnings and His ultimate plan to redeem His faithful. God rolls the skies to unveil His throne, dissolving veils between time and triumph. “The heavens shall be rolled together as a scroll: and all their host shall fall down, as the leaf falleth off from the vine, and as a falling fig from the fig tree” (Isaiah 34:4, KJV). In Early Writings we read, “… the heavens departed as a scroll when it is rolled together, and every mountain and island were moved out of their places. ‘And the kings of the earth, and the …’” (p. 286, 1882). Patriarchs and Prophets reminds us, “In that great coming day, the heaven itself shall depart ‘as a scroll when it is rolled together …’” (p. 340, 1890). This unveiling heralds harvest, where faith meets forever in blazing revelation. As the heavens part, the sealing work described in Revelation 7 concludes. This act embodies God’s love by ensuring that His people are marked for salvation before the final judgment. Are we ready to stand before Him, or how do these blazing beacons ultimately beam back God’s heart?
LOVE SIGNS: HEART’S WARNING!
Each sign in the prophetic timeline reflects God’s immense love for humanity. He provides clear warnings, ensuring no one faces judgment unprepared. For example, the Lisbon earthquake, as recorded in The Great Controversy (p. 304), signifies His mercy in granting opportunities for repentance. Through these signs, God communicates His desire for all to be saved (2 Peter 3:9). God extends patience through portents, drawing us from peril with tender tenacity. “Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?” (Romans 2:4, KJV). Early Writings reveals, “… the prophetic periods would run out, and to the signs which showed Christ near, even at the doors. Many shepherds of the flock, who professed to love Jesus, said that they had no opposition to the preaching of Christ’s coming, but they objected to the definite time” (p. 233, 1882). The Great Controversy affirms, “… the prophets or from the signs of the times. As worldly hopes and ambitions filled the heart, love for God and faith in His word had grown cold; and when the advent movement was presented, it only aroused their unbelief” (p. 380, 1911). These omens overflow with affection, transforming dread into doorways of deliverance. God’s love is evident in the evidence cycle of these events. He asserts His authority through prophecy, provides evidence through natural phenomena, and offers commentary through scripture and inspired writings. These signs remind us that God is not distant but deeply involved in guiding humanity toward redemption, so how do these signals now summon us to daily devotion?
READY ACTION: FAITH FIRES UP!
Personally, these events challenge me to live with purpose, aligning my actions with God’s word. I find strength in Sr. White’s counsel: “The whole world is opening to the gospel” (The Great Controversy, p. 632). This motivates me to share His message. Communally, these signs remind us of our collective responsibility. We must act as watchmen, as Ezekiel 33:7 declares: “O son of man, I have set thee a watchman unto the house of Israel.” God ignites inner resolve through outer roars, forging purpose from prophecy’s forge. “Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober” (1 Thessalonians 5:6, KJV). From Eternity Past we learn, “… do return unto the Lord with all your hearts, then put away the strange gods and Ashtaroth from among you, and prepare your hearts unto the Lord, and serve Him …” (p. 429, 1985). Child Guidance counsels, “… are preparing for the soon return of Christ, we should give to the world an example of modest dress in contrast with the prevailing fashion of the day. Talk …” (p. 424, 1954). Such stirrings spark stewardship, binding individual zeal to communal flame. Together, we can be a light in a world searching for hope, but what ultimate echo rings from these heralds?
FINAL CALL: MEET THE KING!
The prophetic signs leading to the sealing work are both a warning and an invitation. They reveal God’s love, urging us to prepare for Christ’s second coming. As we witness these fulfillments, let us respond with faith, hope, and readiness, remembering that His return draws near. Are we prepared to meet our Creator? Let us choose today to stand firm in His truth.
