“And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.” (1 Corinthians 10:4, KJV)
ABSTRACT
This article delves into the vital importance of building our spiritual lives on Christ as the unshakeable Rock and foundation, drawing from biblical metaphors of wise and foolish builders, illustrating how faith anchored in Him endures trials while human-based foundations fail, exploring blessings flowing from this Rock as symbolized in Israel’s wilderness experience, contrasting it with the false rocks of the wicked, outlining our responsibility to build upon God’s Word through immersion and obedience, revealing God’s love in providing this secure refuge, emphasizing our duty to trust and obey for spiritual growth, urging us to guide others to this true foundation, and concluding with a call to self-examination to ensure we stand firm in Christ amid life’s storms.
FOUNDATION FIRMNESS FIGHT!
The foundation upon which we build our faith determines our spiritual endurance. Christ illustrated this in Matthew 7:24-27, likening the wise to one who builds upon a rock and the foolish to one who builds upon the sand. This metaphor reveals a profound truth: faith anchored in Christ withstands trials, while faith rooted in human traditions crumbles. Christ reveals His foundational role clearly in Isaiah 28:16 “Therefore thus saith the Lord God, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.” (KJV), and Psalm 18:2 “The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower.” (KJV). Ellen G. White emphasizes, “Christ, the Word, the revelation of God,—the manifestation of His character, His law, His love, His life,—is the only foundation upon which we can build a character that will endure.” (Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing, p. 148, 1896). She further notes, “Whoever builds upon them is building upon Christ, the Rock of Ages.” (Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing, p. 148, 1896). How, then, do we ensure our foundation is unshakable as we identify who this Rock truly is?
CHRIST: SALVATION ROCK ROARS!
The Scriptures unequivocally identify Christ as the Rock upon which the Church is built. “And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone” (Ephesians 2:20). Likewise, Paul states, “For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ” (1 Corinthians 3:11). Christ is not merely a doctrinal concept but the living cornerstone of our faith. Moses, long before Christ’s earthly ministry, recognized Him as Israel’s Rock: “For their rock is not as our Rock, even our enemies themselves being judges” (Deuteronomy 32:31). Sr. White affirms, “Centuries before the advent of Christ, Moses pointed to Him as the Rock of Israel’s salvation; the psalmist sung of Him as ‘my Redeemer,’ ‘the rock of my strength,’ ‘the rock that is higher than I,’ ‘a rock of habitation,’ ‘rock of my heart,’ ‘rock of my refuge’” (Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 413). Scripture further illustrates this in 1 Peter 2:6 “Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.” (KJV) and Psalm 95:1 “O come, let us sing unto the Lord: let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation.” (KJV). Sr. White explains, “Christ was the cornerstone of the Jewish economy, and of the whole plan of salvation.” (The Desire of Ages, p. 597, 1898). She adds, “In infinite wisdom, God chose the foundation stone, and laid it Himself. He called it ‘a sure foundation.’” (The Desire of Ages, p. 598, 1898). Those who trust in Christ, the Rock, are secured in an unmovable foundation, but what blessings flow from this divine provision as we consider the wilderness experiences?
WILDERNESS ROCK BLESSINGS BOOM!
In the wilderness, God provided for Israel through the Rock. “Who led thee through that great and terrible wilderness… that brought thee forth water out of the rock of flint” (Deuteronomy 8:15). When Israel thirsted, the Lord instructed Moses, “Take thy rod… and smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink” (Exodus 17:6). This act prefigured Christ, who, when smitten for our sins, became the source of living water. Not only did water flow from the Rock, but Israel was also blessed with sustenance: “He made him to suck honey out of the rock, and oil out of the flinty rock” (Deuteronomy 32:13). The Psalmist testifies, “He fed them also with the finest of the wheat: and with honey out of the rock should I have satisfied thee” (Psalm 81:16). These blessings illustrate the spiritual nourishment found in Christ. Sr. White expounds, “As you receive the Word in faith, it will give you power to obey. As you give heed to the light you have, greater light will come. You are building on God’s Word, and your character will be builded after the similitude of the character of Christ” (Mount of Blessing, p. 216). Scripture further highlights this in John 4:14 “But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.” (KJV) and John 6:35 “And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.” (KJV). Sr. White states, “The smitten rock was a figure of Christ, and through this symbol the most precious spiritual truths are taught. As the life-giving waters flowed from the smitten rock, so from Christ, ‘smitten of God,’ ‘wounded for our transgressions,’ ‘bruised for our iniquities’ (Isaiah 53:4, 5), the stream of salvation flows for a lost race.” (Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 411, 1890). She continues, “Our Saviour was not to be sacrificed a second time; and it is only necessary for those who seek the blessings of His grace to ask in the name of Jesus, pouring forth the heart’s desire in penitential prayer.” (Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 411, 1890). Such provision demonstrates God’s care, but what dangers arise when we turn to false rocks instead?
WICKED’S FALSE ROCK FALLS!
Not all trust in the true Rock. Of the wicked, the Lord declares, “Where are their gods, their rock in whom they trusted?” (Deuteronomy 32:37). This false rock represents the foundation of human reasoning, traditions, and self-righteousness. The Lord warns, “Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the Lord” (Jeremiah 17:5). Sr. White explains, “Every building erected on other foundation than God’s Word, will fall. He who, like the Jews in Christ’s day, builds on the foundation of human ideas and opinions, of forms and ceremonies of man’s invention, or on any other works that he can do independently of the grace of Christ, is erecting his structure of character upon the shifting sand” (Mount of Blessing, p. 216). Many build on shifting sands—ceremonialism, intellectualism, or moralism—only to find their faith shattered in times of crisis. Scripture further warns in Proverbs 14:12 “There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.” (KJV) and Matthew 15:13 “But he answered and said, Every plant, which my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up.” (KJV). Sr. White declares, “Our eternal safety depends upon our building upon the sure foundation. Multitudes are today building upon foundations that have not been tested.” (The Desire of Ages, p. 599, 1898). She elaborates, “When the rain falls, and the tempest rages, and the floods come, their house will fall, because it is not founded upon the eternal Rock, the chief cornerstone Christ Jesus.” (The Desire of Ages, p. 599, 1898). The difference between true Rock and the false is the difference between eternal security and certain ruin, so what steps must we take to build rightly?
TRUE FOUNDATION BUILD BATTLE!
Isaiah declares, “To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them” (Isaiah 8:20). A foundation built on anything outside of God’s Word is unstable. Christ warns, “In vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men” (Matthew 15:9). The wise build their lives upon Christ’s teachings. “Ye are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone” (Ephesians 2:20). Sr. White expounds, “Only those who are fortified with the truths of the Bible will stand through the last great conflict” (Great Controversy, p. 593). Scripture further affirms in 2 Timothy 3:16-17 “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.” (KJV) and Proverbs 4:18 “But the path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day.” (KJV). Sr. White writes, “The apostles built upon a sure foundation, even the Rock of Ages.” (Reflecting Christ, p. 223, 1985). She adds, “We have the privilege of striving for immortal life; and it is of the greatest importance that we dig deep, removing all the rubbish, and build on the solid rock, Christ Jesus.” (Counsels to Parents, Teachers, and Students, p. 61, 1913). Thus, our responsibility is clear: immerse ourselves in Scripture, obey its precepts, and lead others to the true Rock, but how does this reflect divine affection?
GOD’S LOVE ROCK REVEALED!
God’s love is revealed in His provision of a secure foundation. “But the Lord is the true God, he is the living God, and an everlasting king” (Jeremiah 10:10). Unlike the false gods of the nations, our God offers an unshakable refuge. “He only is my rock and my salvation: he is my defense; I shall not be moved” (Psalm 62:6). Sr. White beautifully states, “Christ, the true foundation, is a living stone; His life is imparted to all that are built upon Him” (Mount of Blessing, p. 216). God’s love is seen in His invitation to build upon Christ, ensuring our salvation is not dependent on human frailty but on divine strength. Scripture further demonstrates in Ephesians 2:4-5 “But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)” (KJV) and Romans 5:8 “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” (KJV). Sr. White observes, “To those who believe, Christ is the sure foundation. These are they who fall upon the Rock and are broken.” (The Desire of Ages, p. 599, 1898). She continues, “Submission to Christ and faith in Him are here represented. To fall upon the Rock and be broken is to give up our self-righteousness and to go to Christ with the humility of a child, repenting of our transgressions, and believing in His forgiving love.” (The Desire of Ages, p. 599, 1898). Such gracious provision calls us to respond, but what actions does this love demand from us?
TRUST OBEY POWER PULSE!
Our duty is to trust and obey. “Trust ye in the Lord for ever: for in the Lord Jehovah is everlasting strength” (Isaiah 26:4). Faith in Christ demands obedience. “If ye love me, keep my commandments” (John 14:15). To build upon the Rock is to live in accordance with His Word. Sr. White affirms, “As you give heed to the light you have, greater light will come” (Mount of Blessing, p. 216). Spiritual growth is a continuous process, requiring steadfast devotion. Scripture further teaches in James 1:22 “But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.” (KJV) and Hebrews 5:9 “And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;” (KJV). Sr. White declares, “And so also it is by faith and obedience that we build on Christ as our foundation.” (The Desire of Ages, p. 599, 1898). She elaborates, “Every man must rivet his building to the eternal Rock, Christ Jesus; then it will stand amid storm and tempest.” (The Upward Look, p. 81, 1982). We must study, pray, and live in obedience, ensuring our foundation is secure in Christ, yet how do we extend this to those around us?
GUIDE TO ROCK RESCUE!
We must guide others to the true Rock. “He that winneth souls is wise” (Proverbs 11:30). Many build on sinking sand—false doctrine, worldly ideologies, or self-righteousness. We must lovingly direct them to Christ. Sr. White urges, “Let the light shine forth in clear, steady rays” (Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 413). Our lives should reflect the stability of a Christ-centered foundation, inspiring others to build upon Him. Scripture further encourages in Matthew 28:19-20 “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.” (KJV) and 2 Timothy 2:2 “And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.” (KJV). Sr. White states, “By His sacrifice and mediation Christ is both the foundation and the builder of the church of God.” (The Great Controversy, p. 416, 1911). She adds, “Upon this living stone, Jews and Gentiles alike may build. This is the only foundation upon which we may securely build.” (The Desire of Ages, p. 599, 1898). Such outreach fulfills our calling, leading to ultimate reflection on our own standing.
FOUNDATION FINAL FACE-OFF!
The parable of the wise and foolish builders compels us to examine our foundation. Are we building on Christ, or upon the shifting sands of human philosophy? “The foundation of God standeth sure” (2 Timothy 2:19). Scripture further underscores in Psalm 62:2 “He only is my rock and my salvation; he is my defence; I shall not be greatly moved.” (KJV) and Isaiah 26:3 “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.” (KJV). Sr. White affirms, “Christ is a ‘tried stone.’ Those who trust in Him, He never disappoints. He has borne every test.” (The Desire of Ages, p. 598, 1898). She continues, “He has endured the pressure of Adam’s guilt, and the guilt of his posterity, and has come off more than conqueror of the powers of evil. He has borne the burdens cast upon Him by every repenting sinner. In Christ the guilty heart has found relief. He is the sure foundation. All who make Him their dependence rest in perfect security.” (The Desire of Ages, p. 598, 1898). May we build upon Christ, that when the storms come, we may stand unshaken, testifying to the eternal security found in Him.
“For their rock is not as our Rock, even our enemies themselves being judges” (Deuteronomy 32:31).
