WHAT IS PRESENT TRUTH

Ecclesiastes 3:1 (KJV) “To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven.”

ABSTRACT

The article delves into present truth as the timely and relevant gospel message that prepares the community for spiritual challenges, centering on the Three Angels’ Messages in Revelation 14. It illustrates how God tailors truth for each generation’s needs, with Christ as the embodiment and foundation of all truth. The Third Angel’s Message calls for obedience to God’s commandments, highlights the investigative judgment, and urges righteousness through grace. The Second Angel’s Message announces Babylon’s fall, prompting separation from false systems and error to preserve pure faith. Emphasizing the urgency of perfecting Christian character and standing firm in truth amid crises, the piece encourages diligent Scripture study, missionary work, and vigilance against deception to ready us for Christ’s imminent return.

PRESENT TRUTH UNVEILED!

Present truth defines the understanding of the gospel message relevant for specific times in history, with a focus on spiritual readiness. The concept of present truth proves crucial to a Christian’s journey, especially as outlined in 2 Peter 1:12, which encourages us to be established in truth. Present truth exceeds just knowledge; it represents the message needed to prepare individuals for the trials and challenges of their time. As we explore the essence of present truth, we will examine its significance in biblical history and its relevance today, specifically through the lens of the Three Angels’ Messages. Scripture reveals that we grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ (2 Peter 3:18, KJV). Clearly, God sanctifies us through thy truth: thy word is truth (John 17:17, KJV). Ellen G. White states, “We must not think, ‘Well, we have all the truth, we understand the main pillars of our faith, and we may rest on this knowledge.’ The truth is an advancing truth, and we must walk in the increasing light” (Review and Herald, March 25, 1890). Sr. White further notes, “That which God gives His servants to speak today would not perhaps have been present truth twenty years ago, but it is God’s message for this time” (The 1888 Materials, p. 133, 1888). Present truth guides our path in these critical times.

Present truth serves as the message tailored for each generation’s unique challenges. In the time of Noah, present truth was the call to repentance and the message of entering the ark. This was the truth necessary to prepare the people for the impending flood (Genesis 6:13). Similarly, Lot was given present truth when he was instructed to flee Sodom before its destruction (Genesis 19:15-17). These examples highlight how present truth addresses the specific spiritual needs of a particular generation. Ellen G. White confirms this point by stating, “There is a present truth for the church today. He who does all things according to the counsel of His will has been pleased to place men under various circumstances and to enjoin upon them duties peculiar to the times in which they live” (Great Controversy, pp. 143-144, 1911). This commentary emphasizes that God’s truth evolves to address the needs of each generation while maintaining its core foundation in Christ. Revealing its timeless application, the Bible teaches that every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him (Proverbs 30:5, KJV). In addition, we learn that the path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day (Proverbs 4:18, KJV). Sr. White explains, “The truths that have been unfolding in their order, as we have advanced along the line of prophecy revealed in the Word of God, are truth, sacred, eternal truth today” (Selected Messages Vol. 2, p. 103, 1958). Sr. White adds, “Present truth is to be our burden. The third angel’s message must do its work of separating from the churches a people who will take their stand on the platform of eternal truth” (Testimonies Vol. 6, p. 61, 1901). God adapts truth to meet our current spiritual demands.

Jesus Christ embodies the essence of truth. We recognize that truth must be pure and unadulterated, without the influence of human tradition or superstition. John 14:6 records Jesus saying, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” Ellen G. White elaborates on this by asserting that Christ is the complete system of truth: “Christ is the author of all truth…when He came to earth, He found the bright gems of truth buried in superstition and tradition” (That I May Know Him, p. 207:2, 1964). This reinforces the idea that truth comes directly from God, and Jesus’ mission was to restore truth in its purest form, free from the distortions accumulated over centuries. Just as Christ restored truth, we are called to proclaim present truth today, ensuring it is not mingled with error. The Bible declares that all thy commandments are truth (Psalm 119:151, KJV). Moreover, we see that the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth (Ephesians 5:9, KJV). Sr. White affirms, “The Lord gives the right message to His people to meet the perils of the last days. Present truth for this time embraces the security of the loyal people of God in the message of the third angel” (1888 Materials, p. 917, 1892). Sr. White observes, “The truth for this time is precious, but those whose hearts have not been broken by falling on the rock Christ Jesus, will not see and appreciate its value” (Review and Herald, April 14, 1891). Christ remains the unchanging source of all genuine truth.

The foundation of our faith rests on Jesus Christ, who is the ultimate truth. The Bible states in 1 Corinthians 3:11, “For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.” As we settle into present truth, we are essentially being established in Christ. Sr. White echoes this by explaining that the people of God are sealed when they “settle into the truth, both intellectually and spiritually” (SDA Bible Commentary, Vol. 4, p. 1161:6, 1955). This highlights that understanding and living by present truth is part of the sealing process that prepares us for the challenges ahead, including the final events of Earth’s history. Scripture teaches that we should hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus (2 Timothy 1:13, KJV). Clearly, Christ builds us up on our most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost (Jude 1:20, KJV). Sr. White writes, “There are many precious truths contained in the Word of God, but it is ‘present truth’ that the flock needs now. I have seen the danger of the messengers running off from the important points of present truth, to dwell upon subjects that are not calculated to unite the flock and sanctify the soul” (Early Writings, p. 63, 1882). Sr. White states, “The present truth now, is that which shows present duty, and the right position for us who are about to witness the time of trouble, such as never was” (The Present Truth, vol. 1, 1849). Present truth anchors us securely in Christ.

Understanding present truth is vital for every generation. It is the message God provides to prepare His people for their time’s spiritual and practical challenges. As history progresses, the message of truth evolves, yet remains rooted in Christ, who is the foundation of all truth. As we move forward, we must hold fast to this truth, recognizing that our faith must be anchored in the unchanging Word of God. This essay provides a foundation for understanding how present truth applies today and invites us to be ready for the next section, which will explore the significance of the Third Angel’s Message. The Bible affirms that thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path (Psalm 119:105, KJV). In addition, we know that the entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple (Psalm 119:130, KJV). Sr. White explains, “We must not think, ‘Well, we have all the truth, we understand the main pillars of our faith, and we may rest on this knowledge.’ The truth is an advancing truth, and we must walk in the increasing light” (Review and Herald, March 25, 1890). Sr. White adds, “That which God gives His servants to speak today would not perhaps have been present truth twenty years ago, but it is God’s message for this time” (The 1888 Materials, p. 133, 1888). What defines the present truth for our current era in the proclamation of the Third Angel’s Message, which warns the world of the final test before Christ’s return?

THIRD ANGEL’S THUNDER!

The third angel’s message is central to our present truth and stands as a vital message for our time. Ellen G. White explains, this message is foundational to our understanding of the everlasting gospel, and it is to be proclaimed with increasing power as we approach the final test (1888 Materials, p. 1710, 1974). The third angel’s message, following the first and second, calls for obedience to God’s commandments and warns of the consequences of rejecting this truth. This message is life and death, and its proclamation must be at the heart of our mission as God’s remnant people. As we examine its significance, we must also understand the role of justification by faith, which Sr. White affirms as part of this message (Advent Review and Sabbath Herald, April 1, 1890, p. 7-8). The Bible teaches that if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments (Matthew 19:17, KJV). Moreover, we learn that blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city (Revelation 22:14, KJV). Sr. White declares, “The third angel’s message is to be at this time regarded as of the highest importance. It is a life-and-death question” (Manuscript Releases, vol. 9, p. 290, 1903). Sr. White observes, “The message is to prepare a people to stand in the last great day, and to be united in heaven above” (Lift Him Up, p. 339, 1988). The Third Angel’s Message demands our full commitment.

The foundation of the third angel’s message is the everlasting gospel, as revealed in the first angel’s message in Revelation 14:6-7. This gospel is a message of truth mingled with mercy (Psalms 85:10), offering freedom to those who accept it (John 8:32). Sr. White emphasizes that the third angel’s message holds critical importance, as it carries with it the destiny of souls (Early Writings, pp. 258-259, 1882). It is reinforced by the message of Revelation 18, where the power and glory of Christ’s righteousness are revealed. This loud cry serves as a warning to the world, with a message of both salvation and judgment. As the investigative judgment proceeds in heaven, we are called to uphold the truths that have been given to us through prayerful study and divine guidance (Selected Messages, Vol. 1, p. 208, 1958). Scripture reveals that the gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come (Matthew 24:14, KJV). Clearly, God commends his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us (Romans 5:8, KJV). Sr. White states, “The time of test is just upon us, for the loud cry of the third angel has already begun in the revelation of the righteousness of Christ, the sin-pardoning Redeemer. This is the beginning of the light of the angel whose glory shall fill the whole earth” (Review and Herald, July 31, 1888). Sr. White adds, “This message was designed to put the children of God upon their guard, by showing them the hour of temptation and anguish that was before them” (Early Writings, p. 254, 1882). The everlasting gospel forms the core of our proclamation.

The investigative judgment forms a crucial aspect of the third angel’s message. This judgment, taking place before Christ’s second coming, is meant to determine the rewards for the saints (Revelation 14:7, 11:18). Sr. White teaches that the subject of the sanctuary and investigative judgment must be clearly understood by God’s people (Great Controversy, p. 488, 1911). This knowledge is essential for the development of faith and for occupying the position God has designated for His followers. As the sins of us are removed from the heavenly sanctuary, a work of purification must also take place among God’s people on earth. The message of the third angel underscores the need for righteousness and a readiness to stand before a holy God without a mediator (Great Controversy, p. 425, 1911). The Bible declares that it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment (Hebrews 9:27, KJV). In addition, we see that God will render to every man according to his deeds (Romans 2:6, KJV). Sr. White explains, “The proclamation of the third angel’s message calls for the presentation of the Sabbath truth. This truth, with others included in the message, is to be proclaimed; but the great center of attraction, Christ Jesus, must not be left out” (Gospel Workers, p. 156, 1915). Sr. White notes, “In a special sense Seventh-day Adventists have been set in the world as watchmen and light bearers. To them has been entrusted the last warning for a perishing world. On them is shining wonderful light from the word of God. They have been given a work of the most solemn import—the proclamation of the first, second, and third angels’ messages” (Testimonies Vol. 9, p. 19, 1909). The investigative judgment calls us to holy living.

As we conclude our study of the third angel’s message, it is evident that this message is closely tied to the themes of judgment, righteousness, and salvation. The work of Christ in the heavenly sanctuary coincides with the call for us to purify our hearts and characters through diligent effort and God’s grace. We must heed this message, for it is our present truth and will guide us through the final test. As Sr. White asserts, “The proclamation of the third angel’s message…is the great burden of our work” (Counsels to Writers and Editors, p. 139, 1946). Understanding and living by this message is crucial for preparing to meet our Savior. Thus, the third angel’s message is not merely a historical doctrine but an urgent call for obedience, faithfulness, and preparation as we await Christ’s return. Scripture teaches that we must work out your own salvation with fear and trembling (Philippians 2:12, KJV). Moreover, God works in us both to will and to do of his good pleasure (Philippians 2:13, KJV). Sr. White writes, “The third angel’s message is the proclamation of the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus Christ. The commandments of God have been proclaimed, but the faith of Jesus Christ has not been proclaimed by Seventh-day Adventists as of equal importance” (Review and Herald, November 20, 1888). Sr. White affirms, “The Lord in His great mercy sent a most precious message to His people through Elders Waggoner and Jones. This message was to bring more prominently before the world the uplifted Saviour, the sacrifice for the sins of the whole world. It presented justification through faith in the Surety; it invited the people to receive the righteousness of Christ, which is made manifest in obedience to all the commandments of God” (Testimonies to Ministers, p. 91, 1923). What does the second angel’s message reveal about the fall of Babylon and the consequences for those who reject the truth?

BABYLON’S BIG FALL!

The Second Angel’s Message in Revelation 14:8 proclaims the fall of Babylon, a symbolic representation of confusion and false religious systems. In 1844, this fall became evident as many churches rejected the light of the first angel’s message, which was centered on the everlasting gospel. Ellen G. White emphasizes that “the different parties of professed Advent believers have each a little truth, but God has given all these truths to His children who are being prepared for the day of God” (Early Writings, p. 124-125, 1882). This separation of truth from error marks a critical point in the spiritual history of God’s people. The Bible warns that come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you (2 Corinthians 6:17, KJV). Clearly, God calls us not to be unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? (2 Corinthians 6:14, KJV). Sr. White states, “The second angel’s message of Revelation 14 was first preached in the summer of 1844, and it then had a more direct application to the churches of the United States, where the warning of the judgment had been most widely proclaimed and most generally rejected, and where the declension in the churches had been most rapid. But the message of the second angel did not reach its complete fulfillment in 1844. The churches then experienced a moral fall, in consequence of their refusal of the light of the advent message; but that fall was not complete. As they have continued to reject the special truths for this time they have fallen lower and lower. Not yet, however, can it be said that ‘Babylon is fallen,… because she made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication.’ She has not yet made all nations do this” (Great Controversy, p. 389, 1911). Sr. White adds, “The first angel was followed by a second, proclaiming, “Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because she made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication.” Rev. 14:8. This message was understood by Adventists to be an announcement of the fall of the Protestant churches, who were made drunk by Babylon” (Spirit of Prophecy, vol. 4, p. 232, 1884). The fall of Babylon demands our separation from falsehood.

God’s people come to the knowledge of this truth, they are called to separate from fallen churches and nominal Adventists. Sr. White advises against attending meetings where error is taught, stating, “If God has delivered us from such darkness and error, we should stand fast in the liberty wherewith He has set us free and rejoice in the truth” (Early Writings, p. 125, 1882). The mingling of truth with error can weaken the faith of us, and God warns that those who continue to expose themselves to false doctrines will lose the protection of His angels. The light of truth becomes contaminated with darkness, leading to spiritual decline. Therefore, it is crucial for us to remain steadfast in the truth and avoid associations that would dilute our faith. Scripture reveals that evil communications corrupt good manners (1 Corinthians 15:33, KJV). In addition, we learn that whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God (2 John 1:9, KJV). Sr. White explains, “As the churches refused to receive the first angel’s message, they rejected the light from heaven and fell from the favor of God. They trusted to their own strength, and by opposing the first message placed themselves where they could not see the light of the second angel’s message. But the beloved of God, who were oppressed, accepted the message, ‘Babylon is fallen,’ and left the churches” (Early Writings, p. 237, 1882). Sr. White notes, “I saw another angel come down from heaven, having great power; and the earth was lightened with his glory. And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird. And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, My people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues” (Great Controversy, p. 603, 1911). Separation preserves our spiritual integrity.

The fall of Babylon signals a greater call for God’s people to proclaim the truth with clarity and boldness. The urgency of the message is highlighted by the necessity to prepare for the final events leading to Christ’s return. As Sr. White notes, there is no time to waste in “listening to fables” (Early Writings, p. 125, 1882); instead, we must focus on present truth and seek wisdom to understand our position. This truth includes not only the Sabbath and the commandments of God but also the gospel of health, which is closely linked to the third angel’s message. Health reform serves as the “right arm” of the body of truth, making way for other truths to reach the heart (Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 6, p. 327, 1901). The Bible teaches that declare his glory among the heathen, his wonders among all people (Psalm 96:3, KJV). Moreover, we see that go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost (Matthew 28:19, KJV). Sr. White affirms, “The light which attended this angel penetrated everywhere, as he cried mightily, with a strong voice, “Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird.” Rev. 18:2. The message of the fall of Babylon, as given by the second angel, is repeated, with the additional mention of the corruptions which have been entering the churches since 1844” (Spiritual Gifts, vol. 1, p. 277, 1858). Sr. White states, “Angels were sent to aid the mighty angel from heaven, and I heard voices which seemed to sound everywhere, ‘Come out of her, My people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues. For her sins have reached unto heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities’” (Early Writings, p. 277, 1882). Proclamation strengthens our resolve in truth.

The fall of Babylon as declared in the Second Angel’s Message is a vital aspect of present truth. It calls God’s people to separate from error and hold fast to the truths revealed through His Word and Spirit. As we continue to study and proclaim the everlasting gospel, we must remain vigilant in our pursuit of truth and prepare ourselves and others for Christ’s soon return. By embracing the call to righteousness and reform, we fulfill our role in the final movements of earth’s history. Scripture declares that watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong (1 Corinthians 16:13, KJV). Clearly, God calls us to hold fast till I come (Revelation 2:25, KJV). Sr. White explains, “The second angel’s message is, “Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because she made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication” (Maranatha, p. 171, 1976). Sr. White adds, “This scripture points forward to a time when the announcement of the fall of Babylon, as made by the second angel of Revelation 14 (verse 8), is to be repeated, with the additional mention of the corruptions which have been entering the various organizations that constitute Babylon, since that message was first given, in the summer of 1844” (Great Controversy, p. 603, 1911). Why is it essential to perfect Christian character in light of these messages?

PERFECT CHARACTER QUEST!

We perfect Christian character through obedience to God’s commandments. Revelation 22:14 emphasizes the blessings of those who keep God’s commandments, suggesting that only those with perfected character will enter the gates of the New Jerusalem. Ellen G. White highlights the importance of dwelling on present truth, especially regarding Christ’s second coming. She asserts that we have a short time to present the truth, which must be done with clarity and simplicity, just as Christ did. Sr. White states, “Truth will dispel the clouds of error” (Evangelism, p. 624, 1946). This emphasizes the importance of presenting the truth with urgency, as false teachings cloud the minds of many. She also warns that Satan will use every device to blind minds to the dangers of the times. Thus, it is critical to search the Scriptures diligently and seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit in understanding the truth, as it is the only way to counter the enemy’s influence (Selected Messages, Vol. 1, pp. 362-363, 1958). Perfecting Christian character through obedience to God’s commandments prepares us for the trials ahead and ensures that we remain firm in our faith during the final test. The Bible teaches that be ye holy; for I am holy (1 Peter 1:16, KJV). In addition, we learn that let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God (2 Corinthians 7:1, KJV). Sr. White declares, “When the character of Christ shall be perfectly reproduced in His people, then He will come to claim them as His own” (Christ’s Object Lessons, p. 69, 1900). Sr. White observes, “Christ has given us no assurance that to attain perfection of character is an easy matter. . . . A noble character is earned by individual effort through the merits and grace of Christ” (Messages to Young People, p. 99, 1930). Christian perfection equips us for eternal life. What must we do with this present truth and how can we apply it in our daily lives?

STAND FIRM, HEROES!

The Bible calls us to stand firm in the present truth, guarding it within our hearts. As Proverbs 3:3 urges, “Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart.” This means not only knowing the truth but also living it out in our daily lives. Proverbs 23:23 further emphasizes this when it says, “Buy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.” We are commanded to hold onto the truth at all costs and to live in wisdom, instruction, and understanding. Scripture reveals that stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage (Galatians 5:1, KJV). Clearly, we must put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil (Ephesians 6:11, KJV). Ellen G. White states, “Prophecies fulfilled have become facts of history, clearly defining our position. We are standing upon the verge of the eternal world…. Our Lord forewarned His people that iniquity would abound in the last days…. The greater the iniquity prevails, the greater the need for those who fear God to confess their faith by godly works” (That I May Know Him, p. 352, 1964). Sr. White adds, “You are now to call things by the right name, and stand firm in defense of the truth as it is in Jesus. It behooves every soul whose life is hid with Christ in God to be revealed in good works, in Christlike meekness and lowliness of heart” (Reflecting Christ, p. 278, 1985). Standing firm secures our spiritual foundation.

Standing firm in the truth requires maintaining the right spirit. John 4:23-24 teaches that “the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth,” reminding us that our devotion to God must be grounded in both sincerity and the truth of His Word. But how do we convey this truth to others? Ephesians 4:15 tells us we must “speak the truth in love.” Teaching the truth without love distorts its power and impact. True love for the truth leads to a spirit of obedience, as Galatians 3:1 notes, but without this love, many will remain “ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth” (2 Timothy 3:7). Therefore, we must be purified by obedience (1 Peter 1:22) and be willing to die rather than sin, as Ellen G. White powerfully states, “Those who would rather die than perform a wrong act are the only ones who will be found faithful” (Testimonies for the Church, vol. 5, p. 53, 1889). The Bible declares that love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him (1 John 2:15, KJV). In addition, we see that purify your hearts, ye double minded (James 4:8, KJV). Sr. White explains, “I saw a company who stood well guarded and firm, giving no countenance to those who would unsettle the established faith of the body. God looked upon them with approbation” (Early Writings, p. 258, 1882). Sr. White notes, “Let us ever maintain in our lives the principles of righteousness, that we may go forward from strength to strength in the name of the Lord” (My Life Today, p. 107, 1952). The right spirit empowers our witness.

God’s people stand with courage and zeal in defense of truth and righteousness in these challenging times. Ellen G. White urges, “To stand in defense of truth and righteousness when the majority forsake us, to fight the battles of the Lord when champions are few—this will be our test” (Testimonies for the Church, vol. 5, p. 136, 1889). This call becomes even more critical as the judgments of God are already visible in natural disasters and other perilous events. Now is the time for those who uphold the truth to demonstrate their steadfast commitment to principle. True love for the truth must lead to action, which includes sharing it with others. As Sr. White emphasizes, “We see the great need of missionary work to carry the truth not only to foreign countries but to those who are near us” (Advent Review and Sabbath Herald, Sept. 9, 1891, p. 9). This truth must reach both distant lands and nearby communities. Scripture teaches that be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest (Joshua 1:9, KJV). Moreover, we learn that watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong (1 Corinthians 16:13, KJV). Sr. White states, “The Lord desires His people to arise and do their appointed work. The responsibility of warning the world rests not upon the ministry alone. The lay members of the church are to share in the work of soul-saving” (Review and Herald, January 12, 1911). Sr. White adds, “Every true disciple is born into the kingdom of God as a missionary. He who drinks of the living water becomes a fountain of life” (The Desire of Ages, p. 195, 1898). Courage defines our defense of truth.

God promises great blessings to those who embrace the truth. Psalm 40:11 prays, “Withhold not thou thy tender mercies from me, O LORD: let thy lovingkindness and thy truth continually preserve me.” His truth is a shield and a defense for those who trust in Him (Psalm 91:4). Moreover, in Isaiah 26:2, it is promised that “the righteous nation which keepeth the truth may enter in.” These promises highlight the protection and preservation that come from living in harmony with the truth. John 3:21 also reminds us that those who do truth come to the light, and their deeds are made manifest in God. Therefore, the truth is not only a guide for personal purity but also a shield for all who commit to it. The Bible affirms that the Lord shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul (Psalm 121:7, KJV). Clearly, God keeps him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee (Isaiah 26:3, KJV). Ellen G. White writes, “As we lay hold upon the truth of God, its influence must affect us. It must elevate us. It must remove from us every imperfection” (Testimonies Vol. 1, p. 416, 1864). Sr. White observes, “Truth is sacred, divine, and upon it we can depend as upon a rock in a weary land” (Review and Herald, October 16, 1883). God’s promises sustain our commitment.

We must be aware of the enemy’s tactics in this present time. Satan is actively working to distract and deceive people from embracing the present truth. Ellen G. White warns, “Satan is now using every device in this sealing time to keep the minds of God’s people from the present truth, and to cause them to waver” (Early Writings, p. 44, 1882). Satan’s aim is to weaken our resolve and keep us from standing firmly on the truth, causing spiritual instability and leading many astray. This is why we must plant our feet firmly in the truth, standing strong against deception and holding fast to God’s promises. We will explore more deeply Satan’s efforts in this present time to undermine the foundation of the truth among God’s people. The Bible teaches that be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour (1 Peter 5:8, KJV). In addition, we see that submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you (James 4:7, KJV). Sr. White states, “We are standing upon the verge of the eternal world…. Our Lord forewarned His people that iniquity would abound in the last days” (That I May Know Him, p. 352, 1964). Sr. White adds, “The greater the iniquity prevails, the greater the need for those who fear God to confess their faith by godly works” (That I May Know Him, p. 352, 1964). Vigilance protects us from deception.

This understanding requires us to be ever vigilant, testing all things by the Word of God. As we continue to navigate these last days, the call to remain steadfast becomes increasingly urgent. Holding onto the present truth is not only a matter of knowledge but of life and death—both spiritually and physically. Only those who love the truth will be shielded from the overwhelming deceptions that lie ahead. Scripture declares that prove all things; hold fast that which is good (1 Thessalonians 5:21, KJV). Clearly, God calls us to search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me (John 5:39, KJV). Ellen G. White explains, “The time demands greater efficiency and deeper consecration. Oh, I am so full of this subject that I cry to God: ‘Raise up and send forth messengers filled with a sense of their responsibility, messengers in whose hearts self-idolatry, which lays the foundation for idolatry, is crucified’” (Testimonies Vol. 9, p. 109, 1909). Sr. White states, “We must have a firm reliance upon the word of God if we would stand the test and proving of the Lord” (Review and Herald, December 18, 1888). Steadfastness ensures our eternal victory.

Revelation 14:12 (KJV) Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.
