REVELATION 7:2-3 (KJV): AND I SAW ANOTHER ANGEL ASCENDING FROM THE EAST, HAVING THE SEAL OF THE LIVING GOD: AND HE CRIED WITH A LOUD VOICE TO THE FOUR ANGELS, TO WHOM IT WAS GIVEN TO HURT THE EARTH AND THE SEA, SAYING, HURT NOT THE EARTH, NEITHER THE SEA, NOR THE TREES, TILL WE HAVE SEALED THE SERVANTS OF OUR GOD IN THEIR FOREHEADS.
ABSTRACT
This article explores the profound doctrines of the sealing message and the 144,000 as revealed through Scripture, the writings of Ellen G. White, and historical events, aiming to provide clarity, deepen spiritual convictions, and prepare readers for impending end-time events. It addresses three key questions: the gradual dawning of the sealing truth among early Advent believers following the 1844 disappointment, culminating in deeper Sabbath understanding by 1846-1848; the commencement of the sealing work in 1848, divinely synchronized with European revolutions and the rise of spiritualism, where angels hold back “winds” of strife to allow God’s servants to receive the Sabbath as the seal of the living God; and the inclusion of faithful believers who died since 1848 in the 144,000 through a special resurrection, ensuring they join the living saints in eternal glory. Emphasizing themes of divine protection, character perfection, faithful stewardship, and unyielding trials without an intercessor, the piece underscores God’s loving orchestration of history, urging personal sanctification, active outreach, and communal readiness as candidates for heaven, ultimately calling readers to stand victorious with the Lamb on Mount Zion amid escalating global turmoil.
MARVELS OF DIVINE DESTINY: THE SEALING MESSAGE UNVEILED!
This article aims to illuminate, for all earnest seekers of truth, the profound and often misunderstood doctrines surrounding the sealing message and the 144,000. We will embark on a journey through Scripture, the inspired counsels of Sr. White, and historical understanding, seeking clarity, depth, and theological accuracy. The purpose here extends beyond mere academic curiosity; it is a heartfelt endeavor to stir souls, deepen convictions, and prepare each reader for the momentous events that loom on the horizon of human history. Together, we shall explore three pivotal questions: the historical dawning of this divine light, the precise commencement of the sealing work itself, and the ultimate destiny of those faithful souls who have rested in Christ since this critical message was first proclaimed to a waiting world. Imagine, if you will, standing upon the very precipice of eternity, the fierce winds of global strife and unprecedented turmoil howling about you, yet experiencing within your soul an unshakeable assurance, a divine mark of protection that transcends earthly chaos. This is not a flight of fanciful imagination; it is the very core of a message that thundered into the spiritual consciousness of a small, dedicated band of believers in the tumultuous mid-19th century—a message that reverberates with even greater, more pressing urgency in our day. What, then, is this mysterious seal? Who are the privileged recipients of such a divine insignia? And could you, dear reader, as you ponder these sacred themes, be counted among that chosen number? While these truths are deeply rooted in specific historical and theological understanding, the overarching themes of divine protection, the necessity of spiritual preparation, God’s sovereign call to a chosen people, and the dramatic culmination of human history resonate profoundly across a multitude of faith traditions. We extend a warm invitation to all—whether you identify as Jew, Christian of any denomination, Muslim, Buddhist, or simply a seeker of profound truth—to explore these concepts with an open heart and a receptive mind, for the hour is late, and the message is vital.
The sealing message is a divine call to readiness, assuring believers of God’s protection. “He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty” (Psalm 91:1, KJV). “The Lord is thy keeper: the Lord is thy shade upon thy right hand” (Psalm 121:5, KJV). As Sr. White wrote, “The seal of God is upon those who are entirely devoted to His service, those who bear His image in character and life” (Selected Messages, Book 1, p. 66, 1958). She further stated, “God has a special work for His people to do in these last days, to prepare a people to stand in the day of His coming” (Manuscript Releases, Vol. 21, p. 386, 1993). This divine invitation to spiritual readiness underscores the urgency of aligning our lives with God’s will, preparing us for eternity. What divine events sparked the revelation of this sealing message?
DAWNING OF HEAVENLY LIGHT: THE SEALING MESSAGE EMERGES!
The unfolding of divine truth is often a gradual process, a dawning light that grows brighter as God’s people earnestly seek His guidance. In the years immediately following the great disappointment of 1844, the primary focus of the early Advent believers centered on understanding and establishing the profound implications of the great second advent movement and the vital first and second angels’ messages of Revelation chapter 14. The third angel’s message, as recorded in Revelation 14:9-12 (KJV), “And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand, The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb: And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name. Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus,” was indeed recognized, particularly its clarion call to “keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.” This understanding naturally and providentially led them to a deeper appreciation and observance of the seventh-day Sabbath, a cornerstone of God’s holy law. (The Sabbatarian Pioneer, J.N. Loughborough, p. 1). Sr. White, in a statement recorded in “Testimonies for the Church,” vol. 1, pages 78, 79, vividly describes this period of dawning understanding regarding the situation in 1846 and onward: “When we began to present the light on the Sabbath question, we had no clearly defined idea of the nature and importance of the Sabbath.” She further elaborates, “God by His Holy Spirit let light shine forth upon His servants, and the subject gradually opened to their minds. It required much study and anxious care to search it out, link after link. By care, anxiety, and incessant labor has the work moved on until the great truths of our message, a clear, connected, perfect whole, have been given to the world.” (The Sabbatarian Pioneer, J.N. Loughborough, p. 1; Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 1, p. 79). This methodical unfolding is beautifully mirrored in the words of the prophet Isaiah, “For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little:” (Isaiah 28:10, KJV). Such a process demands humility, as Sr. White also counseled, “We have many lessons to learn, and many, many to unlearn. God and heaven alone are infallible. Those who think that they will never have to give up a cherished view, never have occasion to change an opinion, will be disappointed.” (Counsels to Writers and Editors, p. 37, 1946). This spirit of teachability was essential as God prepared to reveal deeper aspects of His end-time message. The gradual revelation of truth is further supported by “But the path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day” (Proverbs 4:18, KJV) and “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path” (Psalm 119:105, KJV). Sr. White affirmed, “The truth of God is progressive; it is always onward, going from strength to a greater strength, from light to a greater light” (The Review and Herald, May 6, 1875). She also noted, “The light given was not for one man or a few, but for all who would receive it, to be given to the world” (Manuscript Releases, Vol. 17, p. 6, 1990). This progressive unfolding of truth prepared believers for the sealing message, ensuring they were grounded in God’s law and ready for deeper revelations. How did global events align with the divine sealing work?
CONVERGENCE: THE SEALING WORK BEGINS!
While understanding of various facets of the third angel’s message had become clearer by the pivotal year 1848, the specific and profound sealing message, particularly concerning the 144,000 as depicted in Revelation 7:1-4 (KJV), “And after these things I saw four angels standing on the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth, nor on the sea, nor on any tree. And I saw another angel ascending from the east, having the seal of the living God: and he cried with a loud voice to the four angels, to whom it was given to hurt the earth and the sea, Saying, Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads. And I heard the number of them which were sealed: and there were sealed an hundred and forty and four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel,” and Revelation 14:1-5 (KJV), had not yet become a distinct focus of their study. (The Sabbatarian Pioneer, J.N. Loughborough, p. 1). Although Sr. White had mentioned the 144,000 in her very first vision, recorded in “Experience and Views,” old edition, page 12 [Early Writings, p. 15], a more comprehensive understanding of their sealing was yet to unfold. (The Sabbatarian Pioneer, J.N. Loughborough, p. 1). The dramatic and widespread revolutions that swept across the European continent in 1848, most notably the February Revolution in France which led to the abdication of King Louis Philippe, became an unexpected yet significant focal point for these students of prophecy. Loughborough cites the “Library of Universal Knowledge,” page 536, stating: “That revolution was caused by the French people demanding a republican form of government from under Louis Philippe; and for a time, there was republican form, the revolution contagion spreading temporarily over most of the continent of Europe.” (The Sabbatarian Pioneer, J.N. Loughborough, p. 2). The popular yearning for self-governance and a palpable animosity towards the papacy, which was perceived as upholding the Bourbon ruler Louis Philippe, significantly fueled these widespread conflicts. (The Sabbatarian Pioneer, J.N. Loughborough, p. 2, referencing Robinson’s “Western Europe”). The suddenness and intensity of the 1848 French revolution are particularly highlighted: King Louis Philippe confidently declared on February 21st, 1848, “I was never more firmly seated in the empire of France than I am tonight,” only to be overthrown the very next day after a seemingly minor incident involving a young boy waving a tricolored flag and shouting, “Down with the Pope!” ignited the soldiers, who then added, “and down with the king.” (The Sabbatarian Pioneer, J.N. Loughborough, p. 2). James Robinson’s “Western Europe,” chapter forty, further describes the continental spread of this revolutionary fervor: “The gathering discontent, and demand that great confusion in Europe; but a greater wonder still, what so suddenly stopped it.” (The Sabbatarian Pioneer, J.N. Loughborough, p. 3). This sudden “stopping” or “slacking up,” as Sr. White termed it in a testimony from 1852 referring to the 1848 events (“I saw in Europe, just as things were moving to accomplish their designs, there would be a slacking up once or twice.” The Sabbatarian Pioneer, J.N. Loughborough, p. 3), was seen by the Advent believers as a divine intervention, a holding back of the winds of strife. The prophetic words of Haggai, though in a different immediate context, resonate with this period: “And I will shake all nations, and the desire of all nations shall come: and I will fill this house with glory, saith the Lord of hosts.” (Haggai 2:7, KJV). Indeed, Sr. White herself connected such global unrest with the nearing fulfillment of prophecy, stating, “The world is stirred with the spirit of war. The prophecy of the eleventh chapter of Daniel has nearly reached its complete fulfillment. Soon the scenes of trouble spoken of in the prophecies will take place.” (Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 9, p. 14, 1909). This intersection of secular history and prophetic insight was preparing the way for a clearer understanding of God’s final movements. The divine orchestration is further evidenced by “The Lord reigneth; let the people tremble: he sitteth between the cherubims; let the earth be moved” (Psalm 99:1, KJV) and “The Lord also shall roar out of Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem; and the heavens and the earth shall shake: but the Lord will be the hope of his people” (Joel 3:16, KJV). Sr. White noted, “The shaking of the nations is a sign of the times, a signal that the end is near” (Manuscript Releases, Vol. 3, p. 314, 1990). She also affirmed, “God has a purpose in permitting these calamities to occur; they are one of His means to call attention to His truth” (The Review and Herald, January 11, 1887). This convergence of events and divine light marked the sealing work’s commencement, aligning human history with God’s prophetic timeline. What role do global events and spiritualism play in this divine narrative?
SPIRITUAL AWAKENING: SEALING AMIDST GLOBAL TURMOIL!
Amidst this global turmoil and the concurrent rise of modern spiritualism, marked by the “spirit rappings” that began in Hydesville, New York, in March 1848, a significant divergence in prophetic interpretation occurred. (The Sabbatarian Pioneer, J.N. Loughborough, p. 4). First-day Adventists, witnessing these events, proclaimed with great zeal that the conflict in Europe would culminate in the Battle of Armageddon and the Lord was about to come immediately. (The Sabbatarian Pioneer, J.N. Loughborough, p. 4). However, the Seventh-day Adventists, firmly grounded in the light of the third angel’s message and the enduring significance of the Sabbath, understood that this truth must first be proclaimed to the entire world before Christ’s return. They could not, therefore, accept the claim of an immediate Second Coming. This critical difference in understanding led the Sabbath-keeping Adventists to earnest, prayerful study for greater light. (The Sabbatarian Pioneer, J.N. Loughborough, p. 4). Their diligent searching of the Scriptures led them to the profound concepts of the “holding of the winds (wars)” as depicted in Revelation 7, and the concurrent “sealing work.” It was in this context that the seventh-day Sabbath was clearly identified not merely as a commandment to be kept, but as “the sign of the living God, and the seal of His law,” a truth that imbued their message with even greater force and doubly assured them that this, as the sealing message, must be proclaimed to the world before the actual advent of Christ. (The Sabbatarian Pioneer, J.N. Loughborough, pp. 4-5). Elder Joseph Bates, in his influential pamphlet titled “The Seal of the Living God,” published on January 1, 1849, provided detailed accounts of the 1848 revolution and connected it to the reception of light on the sealing message. Loughborough quotes from page 45 of Bates’ work: “The public journals have stated that on the twenty-second of February last, France became disorganized, deposed their king, and burned up his throne, and himself and family fled to England for safety.” (The Sabbatarian Pioneer, J.N. Loughborough, p. 4; The Seal of the Living God, Joseph Bates, p. 45). And from page 49, Bates described the fury of the conflict: “See what a rushing and struggling has been and is going on among the people to overthrow the potentates of Europe; namely, Prussia, Hanover, Sicily, Naples, Venice, Lombardy, Tuscany, Rome, etc.” (The Sabbatarian Pioneer, J.N. Loughborough, p. 4; The Seal of the Living God, Joseph Bates, p. 49). A pivotal vision given to Sr. White at the home of Brother Otis Nichols, near Boston, Massachusetts, on November 18, 1848, powerfully confirmed this burgeoning understanding. Elder Bates, who was present and transcribed her words spoken in vision, recorded her saying: “He (God) was well pleased when His law began to come up in strength. That truth (the Sabbath truth) arises, and is on the increase, stronger and stronger. It’s the seal! It’s coming up! It arises, coming from the rising of the sun, like the sun, first cold, grows warmer, and sends its rays… The angels are holding the winds. It is God that restrains the powers. The angels have not let go, for the saints are not all sealed… Why, they (the winds) are just ready to blow. There is a check put on because the saints are not all sealed. Yes, publish the things thou hast seen and heard, and the blessing of God will attend.” (The Sabbatarian Pioneer, J.N. Loughborough, p. 5). This directly aligns with the Apostle John’s vision: “And after these things I saw four angels standing on the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth, nor on the sea, nor on any tree.” (Revelation 7:1, KJV). The nature of this seal was further clarified by Sr. White: “Just as soon as the people of God are sealed in their foreheads—it is not any seal or mark that can be seen, but a settling into the truth, both intellectually and spiritually, so they cannot be moved—just as soon as God’s people are sealed and prepared for the shaking, it will come.” (The Adventist Home, p. 32, 1952). The divine restraint is echoed in “Behold, the Lord maketh the earth empty, and maketh it waste, and turneth it upside down, and scattereth abroad the inhabitants thereof” (Isaiah 24:1, KJV) and “The Lord is slow to anger, and great in power, and will not at all acquit the wicked: the Lord hath his way in the whirlwind and in the storm” (Nahum 1:3, KJV). Sr. White further stated, “The Sabbath is the great test question, the seal of God’s authority in His law” (The Desire of Ages, p. 605, 1898). She also affirmed, “God’s law is to be magnified; its claims must be presented to the world in their true, sacred character” (The Review and Herald, February 25, 1902). This period of divine restraint and revelation solidified the Sabbath as God’s seal, urging believers to proclaim it boldly. What is the timeline of these pivotal events in 1848?

The remarkable convergence of tumultuous world events in 1848 and the dawning light upon the sealing message within the Adventist movement was not seen as mere coincidence. Instead, it was understood as a clear indication of God’s providential hand guiding His people and orchestrating world affairs to allow for the proclamation of His final truths. The “slacking up” of the European revolutions, a phenomenon that puzzled secular observers like Horace Greeley (The Sabbatarian Pioneer, J.N. Loughborough, p. 3), was interpreted through a prophetic lens as the literal fulfillment of Revelation 7, where the “four winds” of strife were being held in check. This divine restraint was not arbitrary; it was purposeful, creating a window of opportunity for God’s servants to be sealed. Furthermore, the intense theological discussions and the differing interpretations of prophecy, particularly with First-day Adventists regarding the immediacy of Christ’s return (The Sabbatarian Pioneer, J.N. Loughborough, p. 4), acted as a catalyst. This spiritual crucible forced the Sabbath-keeping Adventists into a more profound study of the Scriptures, leading them to the pivotal understanding that the Sabbath was not merely a commandment but the very “seal of the living God” (The Sabbatarian Pioneer, J.N. Loughborough, p. 5). This identification of the Sabbath as the central feature of the seal was a monumental step, providing a clear, distinguishing mark of allegiance to the Creator in the impending final conflict. This entire period underscores a foundational principle: God reveals truth progressively, often in direct response to specific historical junctures and spiritual crises, and the Sabbath remains a profound theological symbol of divine authority and end-time identity. “The Lord hath prepared his throne in the heavens; and his kingdom ruleth over all” (Psalm 103:19, KJV). “Say among the heathen that the Lord reigneth: the world also shall be established that it shall not be moved: he shall judge the people righteously” (Psalm 96:10, KJV). Sr. White wrote, “The events of earth are under the control of God, who is working out His great plan of redemption” (Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 305, 1890). She further stated, “God’s hand is in every event, shaping the history of nations to accomplish His purpose” (The Ministry of Healing, p. 441, 1905). This divine orchestration ensures the sealing message reaches those destined to receive it. When did the sealing work truly commence?
DIVINE URGENCY: THE SEALING WORK’S SACRED START!
The compelling testimonies and historical accounts that illuminate when the Seventh-day Adventists received light on the sealing message also serve as robust proof regarding the time when the sealing work itself actually commenced. It was precisely when that great commotion among the nations of Europe erupted in 1848 that the four angels, as depicted in Revelation 7, received their divine commission to hold back the winds of war, specifically so that the crucial work of sealing God’s servants would not be hindered or prematurely cut short. (The Sabbatarian Pioneer, J.N. Loughborough, p. 6). A “check was put on,” a divine pause in the unfolding of earth’s final events, to ensure that the sealing of God’s people could advance. (The Sabbatarian Pioneer, J.N. Loughborough, p. 6). This divine urgency is powerfully captured in a vision given to Sr. White on January 5, 1859, recorded in “Early Writings,” old edition, pages 29-31 [EW 38]. In this vision, Jesus was seen clothed in priestly garments, gazing with deep pity upon the remnant. He then raised His hands upwards and cried with profound compassion, “‘My blood, Father, My blood, My blood, My blood.’” Following this plea, an exceeding bright light emanated from God upon the great white throne, enveloping Jesus. Then, Sr. White “saw an angel with a commission from Jesus, swiftly flying to the four angels who had a work to do on the earth, and waving something up and down in his hand, and crying with a loud voice, ‘Hold! Hold! Hold! Hold! until the servants of God are sealed in their foreheads.’” (The Sabbatarian Pioneer, J.N. Loughborough, pp. 5-6; Early Writings, p. 38). The attending angel explained to fly swiftly to the four angels, and bid them hold, until the servants of God were sealed with the seal of the living God.” (The Sabbatarian Pioneer, J.N. Loughborough, p. 6; Early Writings, p. 38). The apostle Paul speaks of this spiritual reality in Ephesians 1:13 (KJV): “In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,” linking the act of sealing by the Holy Spirit to the reception and belief of truth. The critical nature of this sealing truth was emphasized by Sr. White when she wrote, “The Lord has shown me that precious souls are starving, and dying for want of the present, sealing truth, the meat in due season; and that the swift messengers should speed on their way, and feed the flock with the present truth. I heard an Angel say, ‘speed the swift messengers, speed the swift messengers; for the case of every soul will soon be decided, either for Life, or for Death.’” (The Present Truth, August 1849). The urgency of this divine work is reflected in “But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief” (1 Thessalonians 5:4, KJV) and “The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light” (Romans 13:12, KJV). Sr. White further noted, “The work of God in the earth moves steadily forward, and none can stay His hand” (The Review and Herald, March 22, 1887). She also affirmed, “The sealing is a pledge from God of perfect security to His chosen ones” (Selected Messages, Book 2, p. 73, 1958). This divine pause in global strife enabled the sealing work to begin, ensuring God’s people were prepared. Will the faithful departed share in this divine honor?
ETERNAL PROMISE: THE FAITHFUL DEPARTED AND THE 144,000!
A question of profound interest and deep solace for many believers revolves around the destiny of those faithful souls who have died in the message since the light on the sealing was received in 1848: will they be reckoned among the 144,000? Some have contended that this special company will be composed exclusively of those who are alive and translated at the second coming of Christ, never tasting death. They often base this view on passages like Revelation 14:3, 4 (KJV), which describe the 144,000 as being “redeemed from the earth” and “redeemed from among men,” implying a living company. (The Sabbatarian Pioneer, J.N. Loughborough, p. 8). However, this perspective does not fully harmonize with other significant portions of Scripture and the Spirit of Prophecy. The prophet Daniel speaks of a remarkable event to occur during the “time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation,” just before Christ’s return: “And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people… And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.” (Daniel 12:1-2, KJV). It is undeniable that those who awaken to “everlasting life” in this special resurrection will indeed be alive and “among men” when Christ appears in the clouds of heaven. Therefore, if individuals were being sealed with the seal of the living God from 1848 to 1850 and onward, it is entirely natural and scripturally consistent to expect that those among them who have since fallen asleep in Jesus would be partakers of this special resurrection to everlasting life, and thus be united with the 144,000. (The Sabbatarian Pioneer, J.N. Loughborough, p. 8). The apostle Paul also speaks of the resurrection of the righteous dead at Christ’s coming in 1 Thessalonians 4:16 (KJV): “For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:” This principle of the righteous dead being raised to meet their Lord is fundamental. Indeed, Sr. White directly links this special resurrection to those who died in the faith of the third angel’s message: “Graves are opened, and “many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth… awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.” Daniel 12:2. All who have died in the faith of the third angel’s message come forth from the tomb glorified, to hear God’s covenant of peace with those who have kept His law.” (The Great Controversy, p. 637, 1911). The resurrection promise is reinforced by “For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive” (1 Corinthians 15:22, KJV) and “The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live” (John 5:25, KJV). Sr. White further stated, “The voice of God will call forth the sleeping saints, and they will come forth glorified” (The Desire of Ages, p. 832, 1898). She also affirmed, “The faithful who have died in the truth will be raised to join the living saints in the final victory” (Manuscript Releases, Vol. 1, p. 145, 1990). This assurance confirms that the faithful departed will share in the 144,000’s glory. Who are the chosen few destined for this divine seal?
CHOSEN AND TESTED: THE 144,000’S SACRED CALLING!
The number 144,000, specified in the book of Revelation, has often been a subject of earnest inquiry. If, as some suggest, the final message is to reach “millions,” is this not a remarkably small figure to be sealed? (The Sabbatarian Pioneer, J.N. Loughborough, p. 13). Yet, our Lord Himself referred to His faithful followers as a “little flock,” to whom it is the Father’s good pleasure to give the kingdom. (The Sabbatarian Pioneer, J.N. Loughborough, p. 13). This select group, the 144,000, are depicted as having passed through a “very rigid test.” The prophet Daniel declared, “Many shall be purified, and made white, and tried,” or as some translate, “thoroughly tested.” (Daniel 12:10, KJV). This resonates with the Master’s solemn words, “For many are called, but few are chosen.” (Matthew 22:14, KJV). Sr. White, writing in “Testimonies for the Church,” volume 5, page 136, in 1881, echoed this sentiment: “The great proportion of those who now appear to be genuine and true will prove to be base metal.” (The Sabbatarian Pioneer, J.N. Loughborough, p. 13). She further warned, “Soon God’s people will be tested by fiery trials, and the great proportion of those who now appear to be genuine and true will prove to be base metal. Instead of being strengthened and confirmed by opposition, threats, and abuse, they will cowardly take the side of the opposers.” (The Sabbatarian Pioneer, J.N. Loughborough, p. 14; Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 5, p. 136, 1885). This concept of a select few who endure is also found in Christ’s teaching about the two paths: “Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.” (Matthew 7:13-14, KJV). Furthermore, Sr. White specifies a characteristic of those who will not be sealed: “The class who do not feel grieved over their own spiritual declension, nor mourn over the sins of others, will be left without the seal of God.” (Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 5, p. 216, 1885). The path to being sealed is indeed narrow, requiring unwavering commitment and a heart fully attuned to God. The refining process is echoed in “But he knoweth the way that I take: when he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold” (Job 23:10, KJV) and “The fining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold: but the Lord trieth the hearts” (Proverbs 17:3, KJV). Sr. White noted, “The trials of life are God’s workmen to remove impurities and roughness from our characters” (Thoughts from the Mount of Blessing, p. 10, 1896). She also affirmed, “God’s people must be purified through trial to stand perfect before Him” (The Acts of the Apostles, p. 590, 1911). This rigorous testing ensures the 144,000 are prepared for their divine destiny. What character traits define those who receive the seal?
CHARACTER PERFECTION: THE SEAL’S UNYIELDING STANDARD!
The standard for those who will receive the seal of God is uncompromisingly high, focusing on a perfected character. Sr. White states in “Testimonies for the Church,” volume 5, pages 213, 214: “Not all who profess to keep the Sabbath will be sealed. There are many even among those who teach the truth to others who will not receive the seal of God in their foreheads. They had the light of truth, they knew their Master’s will, they understood every point of our faith, but they had not corresponding works… Not one of us will ever receive the seal of God while our characters have one spot or stain upon them. It is left with us to remedy the defects in our characters, to cleanse the soul temple of every defilement. Then the latter rain will fall upon us as the early rain fell upon the disciples on the day of Pentecost.” (The Sabbatarian Pioneer, J.N. Loughborough, p. 14). This underscores that mere profession or even teaching truth is insufficient without a transformed life. The approach of the final storm will reveal true foundations, as described choose the easy, popular side.” (The Sabbatarian Pioneer, J.N. Loughborough, p. 14). The purity required is further emphasized: “The seal of God will never be placed upon the forehead of the ambitious, world-loving man or woman. It will never be placed upon the forehead of men or women of false tongues or deceitful hearts. All who receive the seal must be without spot before God — candidates for heaven.” (Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 5, p. 216, 1885). The 144,000 are uniquely characterized in Scripture as those in whose “mouth was found no guile: for they are without fault before the throne of God” (Revelation 14:5, KJV), and as a glorious church, “not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.” (Ephesians 5:27, KJV). The call to holiness is a consistent theme: “But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.” (1 Peter 1:15-16, KJV). Sr. White connects this overcoming life directly to the seal: “Those that overcome the world, the flesh, and the devil, will be the favored ones who shall receive the seal of the living God.” (Testimonies to Ministers and Gospel Workers, p. 445, 1923). The need for purity is reinforced by “Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me” (Psalm 51:10, KJV) and “Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God” (Matthew 5:8, KJV). Sr. White further stated, “Only those who reflect the image of Christ will receive the seal of God” (Christ’s Object Lessons, p. 315, 1900). She also affirmed, “The seal of God is a sign of His approval, placed upon those who are loyal to His commandments” (The Review and Herald, August 9, 1904). This high standard ensures the sealed are faultless before God. How does stewardship reflect readiness for the seal?
FAITHFUL STEWARDSHIP: A TEST OF TRUE CONSECRATION!
Among the practical tests of faithfulness and character, Loughborough brings to the forefront the matter of tithes and offerings, highlighting it as a significant indicator of inward consecration. (The Sabbatarian Pioneer, J.N. Loughborough, p. 15). He quotes from “Special Testimonies for Ministers,” No. 7, written September 10, 1896: “A curse is pronounced upon all who withhold their tithe from God. He says: ‘Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed Me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed Thee? In tithes and offerings. Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed Me, even this whole nation. Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in Mine house,….’ God help us to repent. ‘Return unto Me,’ He says, ‘and I will return unto you.’ Men who have a desire to do their duty, have it laid down in clear lines in this chapter. No one can excuse himself from paying his tithes and offerings to the Lord.” (Malachi 3:8-10, KJV). This is not presented as a minor infraction but a serious matter of robbing God. Further, from “Testimonies for the Church,” volume 2, page 199: “They are withholding, and robbing God… This is one reason that, as a people, we are so sickly, and so many are falling into their graves. The covetous are among us.” (The Sabbatarian Pioneer, J.N. Loughborough, p. 16). Loughborough then references a survey from 1915 which indicated that perhaps only half of the church members at that time were paying tithes, leading him to ask the poignant question: “Now are we to conclude that the half do not have anything during the whole year, or are they like a wealthy farmer who said to me, ‘When I have boarded and paid my farm hands, met the expense of my family, bought a new reaper and a new threshing machine, there is not much left on which to pay tithes.’… Do we expect those who withhold the tithes, who the Lord says are “robbers,” to have the seal of the living God placed upon them?” (The Sabbatarian Pioneer, J.N. Loughborough, p. 16). The state of one’s heart, as reflected in financial stewardship, is intrinsically linked to their spiritual preparedness, for “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” (Matthew 6:21, KJV). Sr. White affirms the divine origin and blessing of this system: “The tithing system is of divine origin… Those who make a conscientious return of their tithes will not only be blessed themselves, but will be the means of blessing others; for the Lord will make them His channels to communicate His bounties.” (Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 3, p. 404, 1875). The importance of stewardship is further highlighted by “Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver” (2 Corinthians 9:7, KJV) and “Honour the Lord with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase” (Proverbs 3:9, KJV). Sr. White noted, “God has made the tithing system a test of our loyalty to Him” (Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 527, 1890). She also affirmed, “Faithful stewardship is a condition of receiving God’s approval” (The Acts of the Apostles, p. 340, 1911). Faithful stewardship reflects a heart prepared for God’s seal. What is the role of the final trials in this divine plan?
FINAL TRIALS: STANDING FIRM WITHOUT AN INTERCESSOR!
The final period before Christ’s return, encompassing the seven last plagues, is understood within Adventist eschatology to occupy the space of approximately one year. This interpretation is based on texts such as Revelation 14:19-20 (KJV), which likens this period to the treading of the winepress, and by comparing this with the winepress imagery in Isaiah 61:2 and 63:3-4, where it is called “the day of vengeance” and “the year of my redeemed.” (The Sabbatarian Pioneer, J.N. Loughborough, p. 18). A crucial aspect of this time is that, according to Revelation 15:6-8 (KJV), there is no intercessor in the heavenly temple. (The Sabbatarian Pioneer, J.N. Loughborough, p. 18). The condition of God’s people during this intercessor-less period is vividly set forth in “The Great Controversy,” page 620: “In the time of trouble, if the people of God had unconfessed sins to appear before them while tortured with fear and anguish, they would be overwhelmed; despair would cut off their faith, and they would not have confidence to plead with God for deliverance. But while they have a deep sense of their unworthiness, they have no concealed wrongs to reveal. Their sins have gone beforehand to judgment.” (The Sabbatarian Pioneer, J.N. Loughborough, p. 19). Sr. White often spoke of “the year that we should stand without an intercessor,” underscoring the solemnity of this period. (The Sabbatarian Pioneer, J.N. Loughborough, p. 19). The initiation of this period is marked by a divine command: “And I heard a great voice out of the temple saying to the seven angels, Go your ways, and pour out the vials of the wrath of God upon the earth.” (Revelation 16:1, KJV). Sr. White describes the state of the righteous: “When He leaves the sanctuary, darkness covers the inhabitants of the earth. In that fearful time the righteous must live in the sight of a holy God without an intercessor.” (The Great Controversy, p. 614, 1911). This challenging reality emphasizes that the sealing is a process of character perfection, not merely an intellectual assent to doctrine; it demands a life transformed and purified by divine grace, ready to withstand the ultimate test. The necessity of readiness is echoed in “Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass” (Luke 21:36, KJV) and “Be ye also patient; stablish your hearts: for the coming of the Lord draweth nigh” (James 5:8, KJV). Sr. White noted, “The time of trouble is the crucible that will test every soul” (The Great Controversy, p. 622, 1911). She also affirmed, “Those who are sealed will stand firm when the plagues are poured out” (Selected Messages, Book 3, p. 414, 1980). This period demands a perfected character to stand without an intercessor. How does God’s love shine through the sealing message?
DIVINE LOVE: THE SEAL OF SALVATION!
The intricate prophecies and solemn warnings that envelop the sealing message, far from depicting a capricious or merely judgmental Deity, unveil the profound, unwavering, and meticulously planning love of God for humanity. It is a love that has orchestrated every detail of the plan of salvation, ensuring that even in the face of final judgments, a way of escape and eternal security is provided for those who choose allegiance to Him. This divine affection is not a passive sentiment but an active, intervening force, most powerfully demonstrated in the provision of the seal itself. God’s love is manifested not only in the grand sweep of salvation history—from the promise of a Redeemer in Eden to the ultimate victory over sin and death—but also in the specific, protective, and guiding act of the sealing. This divine marking ensures that a remnant, His faithful children, are preserved and identified through the final cataclysmic events of earth’s history. The very act of “holding the four winds” as described in Revelation 7:1-3 (KJV), “Saying, Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads,” is an act of immense love and divine forbearance. God, in His mercy, delays the full outpouring of destructive forces to ensure that every soul who is willing has the opportunity to be sealed for salvation. As Sr. White described Jesus in vision, pleading with an intensity born of infinite love, “‘My blood, Father, My blood, My blood, My blood’” for the remnant yet unsealed, it reveals a love that actively intercedes, a love that has paid the ultimate price and now seeks to secure its purchase. (The Sabbatarian Pioneer, J.N. Loughborough, p. 6; Early Writings, p. 38, 1882). This is a love that provides a way of escape even when the forces of evil seem overwhelming. Furthermore, the promise of a special resurrection for those who have died in the faith of the third angel’s message, as foretold in Daniel 12:2 (KJV) and confirmed by Sr. White (The Great Controversy, p. 637, 1911), demonstrates a love that conquers death itself. This ensures that faithfulness is remembered and rewarded, and that those who rested in Jesus, having received His seal in their lives, will be included in the final triumph of the 144,000. Loughborough highlights Sr. White’s clear assurance on this matter: “Oh, yes, those who have died in the faith will be among the 144,000. I am clear on that matter.” (The Sabbatarian Pioneer, J.N. Loughborough, p. 13). This is a love that bridges the chasm of the grave, a love that forgets none of its own. The prophet Zephaniah beautifully portrays this divine affection: “The Lord thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing.” (Zephaniah 3:17, KJV). And the apostle Paul exults in the unshakeable nature of this divine regard: “For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:38-39, KJV). Sr. White declares: “God is love. His nature, His law, is love. It ever has been; it ever will be. ‘The high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity,’ whose ‘ways are everlasting,’ changeth not. With Him ‘is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.’” (Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 33, 1890). The divine sealing, therefore, is not an act of arbitrary selection based on some hidden decree, but rather a loving recognition and affirmation of characters that have, through faith and by His grace, chosen to align themselves with divine principles. It is the Father’s protective hand upon His cherished children as they prepare to navigate the unprecedented “time of trouble such as never was.” (The Sabbatarian Pioneer, J.N. Loughborough, p. 14). The detailed prophecies and stern warnings associated with this period are themselves profound expressions of this love, meticulously designed to prepare, not to condemn, and to provide every possible opportunity for souls to be found “without spot before God.” (The Sabbatarian Pioneer, J.N. Loughborough, p. 14). Therefore, the sealing message, with its urgent call to holiness and its glorious promise of ultimate deliverance and eternal life, stands as an enduring testament to a divine love that is infinitely just and profoundly merciful, a love that is actively and unceasingly working to secure the eternal well-being of all who respond to His gracious call. God’s love is further evidenced by “Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins” (1 John 4:10, KJV) and “But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us” (Ephesians 2:4, KJV). Sr. White noted, “The love of God is the foundation of the plan of salvation” (The Desire of Ages, p. 22, 1898). She also affirmed, “God’s love is revealed in every act of mercy and every provision for human need” (Steps to Christ, p. 13, 1892). This love ensures the sealed are eternally secure. What is our sacred duty in response to this divine love?
In heartfelt response to God’s immeasurable love, so vividly demonstrated in the plan of salvation and the protective sealing message, and in solemn recognition of the reality of this divine marking, a profound and intensely personal responsibility rests upon each individual who names the name of Christ. This duty calls us to cultivate a relationship of unwavering faith, to pursue deep and thorough sanctification, and to live a life of complete consecration to our Creator and Redeemer. The sealing is not merely a future event to passively await, but a present spiritual condition to actively attain through His enabling grace. Our primary responsibility toward God, as illuminated with stark clarity by the sealing message, is to earnestly seek, and by His Spirit diligently maintain, a character that perfectly reflects His own divine nature. This sacred duty involves ensuring that we are, through the cleansing blood of the Lamb and the sanctifying power of the Holy Spirit, “without spot or stain” and thus fully prepared to receive His holy seal. (The Sabbatarian Pioneer, J.N. Loughborough, p. 14). The call is unmistakably clear and personal: “Not one of us will ever receive the seal of God while our characters have one spot or stain upon them. It is left with us to remedy the defects in our characters, to cleanse the soul temple of every defilement.” (Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 5, p. 214, 1885). This places the onus of diligent character purification directly upon the believer, a work that is only possible as we cooperate with divine grace. This requires persistent effort, as the apostle Peter exhorts, “Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall:” (2 Peter 1:10, KJV). Our responsibility extends to every known duty, including faithful stewardship of the talents and resources God has entrusted to us. This is strikingly highlighted by the warnings against robbing God in tithes and offerings, as recorded in Malachi 3:8-10 (KJV). Loughborough’s pointed question regarding those who withhold their tithes—”Do we expect those who… are “robbers,” to have the seal of the living God placed upon them?”—implies that the fulfillment of this known duty is an integral part of the character preparation necessary for receiving the seal. (The Sabbatarian Pioneer, J.N. Loughborough, p. 16). The apostle Paul further illuminates this cooperative effort between divine grace and human will: “Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.” (Philippians 2:12-13, KJV). This divine synergy is essential. The apostle John also links the blessed hope of Christ’s return with the believer’s active pursuit of purity: “Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.” (1 John 3:2-3, KJV). Sr. White further stated, “Sanctification is the work of a lifetime, requiring constant effort and entire consecration” (The Acts of the Apostles, p. 560, 1911). She also affirmed, “God calls for complete surrender, that He may work in us to will and to do His good pleasure” (Christ’s Object Lessons, p. 333, 1900). This responsibility, however, is not a burden to be borne in our own finite strength, but rather a joyful and empowering response to God’s all-sufficient and enabling grace. It involves a daily, even moment-by-moment, surrender of our will to His, an active and willing participation in the lifelong process of sanctification. The solemn knowledge that “the sealing time is very short, and soon will be over” (The Sabbatarian Pioneer, J.N. Loughborough, p. 7, citing Early Writings, p. 58) should impel each of us to this sacred work with the utmost earnestness and unwavering determination. Therefore, my personal responsibility, and indeed ours collectively as believers awaiting our Lord, is to live in a state of constant readiness, actively and joyfully cooperating with the Holy Spirit to perfect a character fit for the courts of heaven, a character worthy to bear the indelible seal of the living God. How do we share this divine message with the world?
The profound, life-altering truths of the sealing message, the imminent crisis, and the glorious hope of Christ’s return are not treasures given for our exclusive benefit or to be hoarded within the confines of our own hearts and communities. Instead, this sacred knowledge places upon each recipient a solemn and urgent responsibility to act as channels and conduits of God’s infinite love and timely warning to a world that is increasingly shrouded in spiritual darkness and deception. Our response to understanding these final messages must extend beyond personal preparation to active, compassionate outreach. Our responsibility toward our neighbor, viewed through the lens of these critical end-time concepts, is to compassionately yet urgently share the distinctive, saving truths of the third angel’s message. This includes the significance of the Sabbath as the seal of God, the call to perfection of character, and the impending judgments, all while reflecting the loving, patient, and merciful character of God Himself. Our aim is to prepare others, as well as ourselves, for the soon return of Jesus Christ. Immediately after Sr. White received the vision in November 1848 which confirmed the sealing message and the divine instruction to publish these truths, she was told, “Yes, publish the things thou hast seen and heard, and the blessing of God will attend.” Her husband, James White, was then given a direct commission: “James, I have a message for you. Begin to print a little paper, small at first. Send it out free. The readers will send you money to print it. It will be a success from the first. I saw from this small beginning it was like streams of light that went clear around the world.” (The Sabbatarian Pioneer, J.N. Loughborough, p. 5). This was not a suggestion but an immediate divine mandate to share the newly revealed light far and wide. Consequently, the early Advent believers, “being thus fortified with light from the Scriptures, and the testimony of the Spirit of God… were filled with new energy to press forward with the third angel’s message, being confident that the God whom they trusted would clear the way for this, the last message to the world, to accomplish its purpose.” (The Sabbatarian Pioneer, J.N. Loughborough, p. 6). The gravity of this responsibility is echoed in God’s charge to the prophet Ezekiel: “Son of man, I have made thee a watchman unto the house of Israel: therefore hear the word at my mouth, and give them warning from me. When I say unto the wicked, Thou shalt surely die; and thou givest him not warning, nor speakest to warn the wicked from his wicked way, to save his life; the same wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at thine hand. Yet if thou warn the wicked, and he turn not from his wickedness, nor from his wicked way, he shall die in his iniquity; but thou hast delivered thy soul.” (Ezekiel 3:17-19, KJV). Furthermore, the apostle Paul emphasized the duty to propagate truth when he instructed Timothy: “And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.” (2 Timothy 2:2, KJV). In fulfilling this sacred trust, the method is as important as the message, as Sr. White counsels: “Christ’s method alone will give true success in reaching the people. The Saviour mingled with men as one who desired their good. He showed His sympathy for them, ministered to their needs, and won their confidence. Then He bade them, ‘Follow Me.’” (The Ministry of Healing, p. 143, 1905). This responsibility to our neighbor is not about engaging in aggressive or condemnatory proselytizing, but rather about embodying the love, truth, and grace of the message we bear. It involves living a life that authentically reflects the character of those who are sealed—a life demonstrating “the patience of the saints… they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.” (Revelation 14:12, KJV). Our lives, transformed by these truths, should become compelling testimonies that naturally draw others to inquire about the blessed hope that resides within us. Just as Loughborough noted, the early believers were filled with “new energy to press forward,” fully confident that God Himself would “clear the way” for His message to triumph. (The Sabbatarian Pioneer, J.N. Loughborough, p. 6). Thus, our sacred and joyous duty to our neighbor is to be living epistles of the sealing truth, sharing it with wisdom, humility, and Christlike love, and by our very lives demonstrating the profound, transformative power of God’s final, merciful call to a perishing humanity. This mission is further emphasized by “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost” (Matthew 28:19, KJV) and “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven” (Matthew 5:16, KJV). Sr. White noted, “The work of God is to be carried forward to all the world, and every soul is to have the opportunity to accept the truth” (Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 9, p. 19, 1909). She also affirmed, “Every true disciple is born into the kingdom of God as a missionary” (The Desire of Ages, p. 195, 1898). Our outreach reflects the urgency of sharing God’s sealing truth. How do we live as candidates for heaven’s seal?
CANDIDATES FOR HEAVEN: EMBRACING THE SEAL’S CALL!
The journey through these profound prophetic truths—the historical unveiling of the sealing message, its divine commencement, the assurance of inclusion for the faithful departed, and the solemn criteria for the 144,000—culminates not in mere intellectual assent, but in a pressing call to personal and communal transformation. As we stand in the light of these realities, how then shall we live? The implications are far-reaching, touching every facet of our existence, compelling us to become true “candidates for heaven.” (The Sabbatarian Pioneer, J.N. Loughborough, p. 14, citing Testimonies, Vol. 5, p. 216). How do these profound truths reshape my daily priorities and the inner citadel of my spiritual life? The sealing message, with its uncompromising standard, calls me to an unceasing vigilance over my thoughts, my words, and my actions, knowing with certainty that “not one of us will ever receive the seal of God while our characters have one spot or stain upon them.” (Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 5, p. 214, 1885). This is not a summons to fearful legalism, a cowering under impossible demands; rather, it is an invitation to a joyful, moment-by-moment surrender to the all-sufficient, sanctifying power of the Holy Spirit. The critical question I must continually ask myself is: Am I actively, earnestly seeking to “remedy the defects” in my character? Am I cooperating with God to “cleanse the soul temple of every defilement”? (The Sabbatarian Pioneer, J.N. Loughborough, p. 14). My prayer life, my diligent study of the Word, my interactions with family, colleagues, and strangers—all these become sacred arenas for this divine polishing, this preparation for eternity. It means embracing the “tribulum,” the symbolic threshing instrument of trial and tribulation (The Sabbatarian Pioneer, J.N. Loughborough, pp. 19-20), not as a mark of God’s displeasure, but as His chosen means of separating the worthless chaff from the precious wheat in my own experience. It is through such trials that character is refined, and I can learn to trust implicitly that He “comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.” (2 Corinthians 1:4, KJV). This personal journey of sanctification is the bedrock of readiness for His seal. As a community of faith, as the church awaiting its King, how do we collectively embody the preparedness characteristic of the sealed? We are called to foster an atmosphere where the “separation and unity” spoken of by Sr. White (Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 6, pp. 400-401, 1900) are rightly understood and practiced—a distinct separation from the world’s compromising influences and its fleeting values, and a profound, unbreakable unity rooted in the unchanging truth of God’s Word. Are our churches vibrant centers where the “Sabbath truth arises, and is on the increase, stronger and stronger,” recognized not merely as a day, but as the very seal of the living God? (The Sabbatarian Pioneer, J.N. Loughborough, p. 5). We are called to be a people who, like those described by the prophet Ezekiel, “sigh and that cry for all the abominations that be done in the midst thereof” (Ezekiel 9:4, KJV), not in a spirit of harsh judgment or self-righteous condemnation, but out of deep, heartfelt concern and earnest intercession for a world lost in sin. This involves courageously and consistently upholding all of God’s holy standards, including the principle of faithful stewardship through tithes and offerings, as emphasized by Loughborough (The Sabbatarian Pioneer, J.N. Loughborough, pp. 15-16), and actively working to “repair the breach” made in God’s law, restoring the “paths to dwell in.” (Isaiah 58:12, KJV). Our collective witness must be one of unwavering loyalty to God and compassionate love for humanity.
The divine message of the seal, while universal in its principles, finds unique application in diverse mission fields. Consider these points for personal adaptation:
- How can the solemn urgency of the sealing message penetrate the relentless clamor and myriad distractions of modern city life? Perhaps the most effective approach lies in mirroring Christ’s method: mingling with people, showing genuine sympathy, ministering to their practical needs, and thus winning their confidence before inviting them to consider the deeper truths of salvation and preparedness.. Acts of selfless compassion can often open doors that theological discourse alone cannot.
- In communities where tradition often holds a powerful sway and new ideas are met with skepticism, how can the distinctive truths of the Sabbath as God’s seal be presented winsomely, yet without compromising one iota of their divine importance? Building bridges of trust through genuine friendship, consistent Christlike living, and patient, prayerful instruction may be paramount before introducing challenging prophetic truths.
- How can we inspire the next generation, bombarded with secularism and fleeting pleasures, to see the 144,000 not as an obscure, irrelevant number, but as a thrilling, heroic call to unwavering faith and the development of a Christlike character—a call to be “without fault before the throne of God”? (The Sabbatarian Pioneer, J.N. Loughborough, p. 15). Presenting these truths with passion, relevance, and a focus on the glorious destiny that awaits the overcomer is key.
- In your personal sphere of influence—within your family, your workplace, your neighborhood—what “little paper,” what “stream of light,” as Sr. White envisioned (The Sabbatarian Pioneer, J.N. Loughborough, p. 5), can you initiate today? It might be as simple as a consistently kind word, a shared testimony of God’s goodness, an invitation to study His life-giving Word, or a life lived so transparently for Christ that it provokes others to “ask a reason of the hope that is in you.” (1 Peter 3:15 KJV). The call to receive the seal of God is thus both intensely individual, demanding personal heart-searching and character transformation, and profoundly corporate, requiring the church community to be a beacon of truth and a supportive environment for this sacred preparation.
UNTIL HE COMES – STANDING VICTORIOUS WITH THE LAMB ON MOUNT ZION!
We have journeyed, dear friends and fellow laborers, through the annals of Adventist history and the sacred pages of prophecy, tracing the historical unveiling of the momentous sealing message. We have pinpointed its divine commencement around the pivotal year 1848, a time of earthly upheaval and heavenly illumination. With scriptural and prophetic assurance, we have affirmed the blessed hope that the faithful departed, those who died with the seal of truth upon their hearts, will indeed rise in the special resurrection to join the triumphant, glorified company of the 144,000. And we have faced, with solemn reverence, the sobering reality of the stringent character requirements and the fiery trials that distinguish this “little flock,” chosen and found worthy to stand with the Lamb on Mount Zion. (The Sabbatarian Pioneer, J.N. Loughborough, p. 13).
The ink on these ancient prophetic scrolls, penned by holy men of old as they were moved by the Holy Ghost, is not dry; it is alive, it is vibrant, pulsing with a divine imperative specifically for this very hour, for you and for me. The winds of strife, though restrained for a season by God’s infinite mercy, are gathering force, and their ultimate, unrestrained loosening is certain. The pressing question, then, that echoes in the chambers of every sincere heart, is not merely when these final, awe-inspiring events will transpire, but who we will be when they do. Will we, by God’s grace, be found with our spiritual lamps trimmed and brightly burning? Will our characters, through diligent cooperation with the Divine Refiner, reflect the flawless image of Jesus? Will our foreheads bear the invisible yet eternally significant seal of the living God, a mark recognized in the courts of heaven? The time for decision, for unwavering commitment, for entire consecration, is now. Let us, therefore, with renewed determination, “gird up the loins of [our] mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ”. Let us press forward with that same “new energy” that filled the hearts of our pioneers (The Sabbatarian Pioneer, J.N. Loughborough, p. 6), fully confident that He who began this good work in us, and in His beloved church, “will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.” (Philippians 1:6 KJV). May we all, whether through the miracle of translation for the living righteous or through the glorious special resurrection for those who sleep in Jesus, stand faultless and with exceeding joy before the throne of God, an integral part of that glorious, unnumbered company who “follow the Lamb whithersoever he goeth.”. Amen.
