“And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.” (Ephesians 5:11)
ABSTRACT
In an era shrouded by deceptive forces, this article unveils the biblical truths exposing Spiritualism’s origins, its counterfeit miracles, unholy alliances, and Satan’s subtle tactics, while guiding us toward divine mercy, personal transformation, and the urgent call to proclaim hope amidst encroaching darkness.
WORLD’S DEADLY MIST!
The world, a stage set for the grandest of dramas, finds itself enveloped in a mist of illusion, a pervasive fog of Spiritualism. We stand as sentinels, tasked with illuminating the path through this deepening darkness. The very air pulses with whispers of the unseen, and the allure of contact with the departed tugs at the heartstrings of humanity. Unity depends on a vital connection with Christ. This essay aims to dissect the biblical anatomy of Spiritualism, revealing its insidious nature and offering a bulwark of truth against its seductive lies. 2 Timothy 3:13 But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived. Ephesians 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Ellen G. White elucidates this, stating, “The great apostasy will develop into darkness deep as midnight, impenetrable as sackcloth of hair. To God’s people it will be a night of trial, a night of weeping, a night of persecution for the truth’s sake. But out of that night of darkness God’s light will shine” (Prophets and Kings, 717, 1914). She further warns, “Satan is continually seeking to overcome the people of God by breaking down the barriers which separate them from the world” (The Great Controversy, 591, 1911). We must not merely understand these truths, but allow them to permeate our very being, transforming us into beacons of light amidst the encroaching shadows. But how does this deception trace back to its ancient roots?
EDEN’S FATAL LIE!
The seed of Spiritualism was planted in Eden, a whisper that shattered the divine order. “Ye shall not surely die,” the serpent hissed, a declaration that defied the very essence of God’s word (Genesis 3:4). This primal lie, the assertion of an immortal soul, remains the cornerstone of Spiritualism, a foundation upon which a labyrinth of deception is built. The cold, unyielding truth, as Ecclesiastes 9:5 attests, is that “For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten.” Death is not a doorway to another plane, but a cessation, a slumber until the trumpet’s call. This truth is echoed in Psalm 146:4, “His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish.” Psalm 115:17 The dead praise not the Lord, neither any that go down into silence. Ecclesiastes 3:19-20 For that which befalleth the sons of men befalleth beasts; even one thing befalleth them: as the one dieth, so dieth the other; yea, they have all one breath; so that a man hath no preeminence above a beast: for all is vanity. All go unto one place; all are of the dust, and all turn to dust again. Ellen G. White elucidates this, stating, “The doctrine of man’s consciousness in death, especially the belief that spirits of the dead return to minister to the living, has prepared the way for modern Spiritualism” (The Great Controversy, 551). She further warns, “Satan cannot read our thoughts, but he is a keen observer and closely studies human nature. He marks the words, the actions, and the countenance, and skillfully adapts his temptations to meet the cases of those whom he seeks to ensnare” (Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 1, 312). “The ministration of holy angels, as presented in the Scriptures, is a truth most comforting and precious to every follower of Christ. But the Bible teaching upon this point is often perverted and made to serve the purpose of deceiving souls” (The Great Controversy, 511, 1911). Sr. White also states, “Through the two great errors, the immortality of the soul and Sunday sacredness, Satan will bring the people under his deceptions” (The Great Controversy, 588, 1911). This belief, a comforting mirage though it may seem, opens a portal for Satan’s machinations. The notion that departed loved ones linger, offering guidance, is a cruel deception, a snare that traps the unwary, leading them away from the true Shepherd. Job 14:14, 20-21, affirms the end of earthly consciousness, “If a man die, shall he live again? all the days of my appointed time will I wait, till my change come… Thou prevailest for ever against him, and he passeth: thou changest his countenance, and sendest him away. His sons come to honour, and he knoweth it not; and they are brought low, but he perceiveth it not of them.” Furthermore, Psalm 6:5 declares, “For in death there is no remembrance of thee: in the grave who shall give thee thanks?” These verses underscore the biblical truth that death is a state of unconsciousness, a stark contrast to the spiritualistic notion of an afterlife where the dead are aware and active. But what about the wonders that seem to validate these claims?
MIRACLE MASQUERADE!
Miracles, those awe-inspiring displays of power, are not exclusive to the divine. Revelation 16:14 warns, “For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty.” Satan, the master of deceit, wields supernatural abilities to counterfeit God’s power. He dazzles with wonders, diverting attention from the true source of life. “And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast” (Revelation 13:14). This deceptive power is not new; Exodus 7:11-12 recounts how the Egyptian magicians mimicked God’s miracles through their enchantments, saying, “Then Pharaoh also called the wise men and the sorcerers: now the magicians of Egypt, they also did in like manner with their enchantments. For they cast down every man his rod, and they became serpents: but Aaron’s rod swallowed up their rods.” 2 Thessalonians 2:9 Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders. Revelation 19:20 And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone. Ellen G. White cautions, “Many will be ensnared through the exercise of supernatural power, and the display of spiritual manifestations, which will be regarded by them as evidence of divine power” (Spiritual Gifts, Vol. 2, 59). Paul’s admonition in 2 Corinthians 11:13-15 rings with urgency: “For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.” He masquerades as a benevolent being, his voice a soothing balm, his words a deceptive lullaby. Matthew 24:24 reinforces this warning, stating, “For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.” Sr. White confirms, “The last great delusion is soon to open before us. Antichrist is to perform marvelous works in our sight” (The Great Controversy, 624). She further emphasizes, “Satan has power to bring before men the appearance of their departed friends. The counterfeit is perfect; the familiar look, the words, the tone, are reproduced with marvelous distinctness” (The Great Controversy, 551). “Satan is working by every deception he can command, that we may not be warned of his power and cunning, that we may not be prepared to resist him” (Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 5, 294, 1885). Sr. White also warns, “Fearful sights of a supernatural character will soon be revealed in the heavens, in token of the power of miracle-working demons” (The Great Controversy, 624, 1911). We must not be swayed by spectacle, but anchored in the immutable truths of Scripture. The allure of the miraculous, divorced from God’s word, is a siren’s call, leading to spiritual shipwreck. Yet, how does this deception culminate in a global trap?
EVIL’S DARK TRINITY!
The unholy trinity of Revelation 16:13-14—the dragon, the beast, and the false prophet—speaks of a sinister alliance, a convergence of forces to gather the world for Armageddon. These “three unclean spirits like frogs” represent the amalgamation of Spiritualism, apostate Protestantism, and Roman Catholicism, all under Satan’s dominion. This alliance echoes Daniel’s vision in Daniel 7:8, where he saw “another little horn” that uprooted three other horns, symbolizing a power that would subdue and control existing entities. Revelation 17:3 So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns. Revelation 17:5 And upon her forehead was a name written, Mystery, Babylon The Great, The Mother Of Harlots And Abominations Of The Earth. Ellen G. White reveals, “Through the two great errors, the immortality of the soul and Sunday sacredness, Satan will bring the people under his deceptions” (The Great Controversy, 588). She further explains, “As Spiritualism more closely imitates the nominal Christianity of the day, it has greater power to deceive and ensnare. Satan himself is converted, after the modern order of things. He will appear in the character of an angel of light. Through the agency of Spiritualism, miracles will be wrought, the sick will be healed, and many undeniable wonders will be performed” (The Great Controversy, 588). “Papists, Protestants, and worldling will alike accept the form of godliness without the power, and they will see in this union a grand movement for the conversion of the world and the ushering in of the long-expected millennium” (The Great Controversy, 588, 1911). Sr. White further states, “Through spiritualism, Satan appears as a benefactor of the race, healing the diseases of the people, and professing to present a new and more exalted system of religious faith” (The Great Controversy, 589, 1911). This confederacy of error will culminate in a global crisis, a final test of allegiance. The world will be polarized, and the choice will be stark: fidelity to God’s law or submission to Satan’s counterfeit. We must be ever vigilant, discerning the signs of the times, and standing firm on the foundation of truth. Revelation 18:13 details the merchandise of spiritual Babylon, including “and cinnamon, and odours, and ointments, and frankincense, and wine, and oil, and fine flour, and wheat, and beasts, and sheep, and horses, and chariots, and slaves, and souls of men,” showing the exploitation of human souls through these deceptions. This spiritual harlotry is reminiscent of the warning in 1 Timothy 6:10, “For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.” The pursuit of worldly gain and power, even under the guise of religion, leads to spiritual ruin. But can Satan truly invade our innermost thoughts?
SATAN’S SHARP EYE!
The question of Satan’s access to our thoughts is a source of anxiety for many. However, the inspired writings provide a comforting assurance. “We can not always hinder the thoughts that come as temptations, but we can resist the enemy so that we shall not utter them” (Historical Sketches, 146). Satan cannot penetrate the inner sanctum of our minds, but he is a keen observer, a master strategist. He meticulously analyzes our words and actions, crafting temptations tailored to our weaknesses. “If all would labor to repress sinful thoughts and feelings, giving them no expression in words or acts, Satan would be defeated” (Historical Sketches, 146). 1 Peter 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour. James 4:7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Ellen G. White elaborates, “Every word, every act, is a revelation of the inward thought. As the features of the face express the emotions of the soul, so the actions reveal the character of the heart” (Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 5, 130). Conversely, the angels of God are privy to our innermost thoughts. “Heavenly angels are acquainted with our words and actions, and even with the thoughts and intents of the heart” (Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 1, 544). “Satan is working by every deception he can command, that we may not be warned of his power and cunning, that we may not be prepared to resist him” (Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 5, 294, 1885). Sr. White also states, “Satan takes advantage of every unconsecrated element for the accomplishment of his purposes” (Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 1, 550, 1867). This knowledge should not instill fear, but rather inspire a life of integrity, knowing that our every thought is weighed in the balance of divine justice. 1 Samuel 28:8 and 11 detail Saul’s interaction with the witch of Endor, a clear example of seeking spiritualism and a direct contradiction to God’s commands. Deuteronomy 18:10-11 explicitly forbids such practices, stating, “There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch, Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer.” Why does this falsehood spread so widely?
TRUTH’S BITTER REJECT!
The proliferation of Spiritualism is not a random occurrence, but a consequence of rejecting divine truth. 2 Thessalonians 2:10-11 declares, “And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth that they might be saved. And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie.” This is not an arbitrary act of divine wrath, but a natural consequence of turning away from the light. Those who “received not the love of the truth” are left vulnerable to Satan’s deceptions. Romans 1:28 supports this, stating, “And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient.” Rejecting God’s truth leads to a distorted understanding and acceptance of falsehood. 2 Timothy 4:3-4 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. Isaiah 66:4 I also will choose their delusions, and will bring their fears upon them; because when I called, none did answer; when I spake, they did not hear: but they did evil before mine eyes, and chose that in which I delighted not. Ellen G. White warns, “None but those who have fortified the mind with the truths of the Bible will stand through the last great conflict” (The Great Controversy, 593-594). She further states, “Those who are not connected with God will have no shield of protection from delusion. They will have no enlightened understanding to distinguish truth from error” (Maranatha, 212). “If light and truth is within our reach, and we neglect to improve the privilege of hearing and seeing it, we virtually reject it; we are choosing darkness rather than light” (The Great Controversy, 597, 1911). Sr. White also emphasizes, “The multitudes do not want Bible truth, because it interferes with the desires of the sinful, world-loving heart; and Satan supplies the deceptions which they love” (The Great Controversy, 593, 1911). The Word of God is our shield, our sword, our only defense against the onslaught of error. Without it, we are adrift in a sea of uncertainty, susceptible to every passing wave of deception. Revelation 3:10, a promise to those who keep the word of God, “Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth.” Isaiah 8:20 emphasizes the importance of adhering to God’s Word, “To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.” How does God’s love shine through these stern revelations?
MERCY’S GUIDING LIGHT!
Though the path may seem fraught with peril, every warning, every revelation, is an act of divine mercy. God understands the seductive power of Spiritualism, its ability to ensnare even the most sincere. He, in his infinite wisdom, has provided us with the means to discern truth from falsehood. By revealing Satan’s strategies, by exposing the emptiness of Spiritualism’s promises, God offers us a chance to choose life. The very act of warning is an expression of deep, abiding love, a desire to protect us from the ultimate destruction. The fact that the Word of God reveals these things demonstrates a God that cares enough to give us the tools to avoid being deceived. He does not wish for us to be ignorant, but to be informed and to make our choices based on a foundation of truth. Psalm 86:5 For thou, Lord, art good, and ready to forgive; and plenteous in mercy unto all them that call upon thee. 2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. Ellen G. White eloquently states, “God has permitted the light of truth to shine upon us, that we may distinguish truth from error. He has given us His Word, and He has sent His servants with messages of warning to arouse the people to see their danger” (Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 5, 672). “God has given the world an opportunity to learn and to obey His will. He has given them, in His Word, the light of truth; He has sent them warning, counsel, and entreaty, that they may be saved” (Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 5, 208, 1882). Sr. White further notes, “In mercy to the world, Jesus delays His coming, that sinners may have an opportunity to hear the warning and find in Him a shelter before the wrath of God shall be poured out” (The Great Controversy, 458, 1911). Psalm 119:105 beautifully captures this: “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” God’s Word illuminates our way, guiding us through the darkness and protecting us from stumbling. Furthermore, Proverbs 3:5-6 encourages us to trust in the Lord with all our heart and lean not on our own understanding, acknowledging Him in all our ways, and He will direct our paths. Sr. White eloquently states, “God has permitted the light of truth to shine upon us, that we may distinguish truth from error. He has given us His Word, and He has sent His servants with messages of warning to arouse the people to see their danger” (Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 5, 672). What role do we play in this cosmic drama?
FAITHFUL STEWARDS CALL!
My first and foremost duty is to cultivate a deep, intimate relationship with Him. This involves diligent study of His Word, fervent prayer, and a life of obedience. I must allow the truths of Scripture to permeate my being, transforming me from the inside out. I am called to be a living testament to His power, a beacon of light in a world shrouded in darkness. I must not compromise with error, but stand firm on the principles of righteousness, even when faced with opposition. My life must reflect the character of Christ, a living epistle, read and understood by all. I must live a life that glorifies God and points others to the truth. Psalm 1:1-2 Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. Philippians 4:6-7 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Ellen G. White reminds us, “We are to be Bible students, that we may know the truth for ourselves. We are to search the Scriptures diligently, that we may understand the will of our Heavenly Father” (Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 5, 214). “The Bible is the standard by which to test the claims of all who profess sanctification” (Faith and Works, 52, 1979). Sr. White also states, “The study of the Bible will give strength to the intellect” (Counsels to Parents, Teachers, and Students, 460, 1913). Psalm 119:11 Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee. Furthermore, Joshua 1:8 exhorts us to meditate on God’s law day and night, that we may observe to do according to all that is written therein, for then we will make our way prosperous, and then we will have good success. Sr. White reminds us, “We are to be Bible students, that we may know the truth for ourselves. We are to search the Scriptures diligently, that we may understand the will of our Heavenly Father” (Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 5, 214). How can we extend this light to those around us?
TRUTH’S BOLD HERALD!
I am called to be a herald of truth, a messenger of hope. I must share the warnings against Spiritualism, exposing its deceptive nature, and guiding others to the safe haven of God’s Word. I must speak with compassion, recognizing the pain and confusion that Spiritualism often exploits. I must be a voice of reason, offering clear, biblical answers to the questions that plague the human heart. I must demonstrate the love of Christ through acts of kindness and service, showing that true spirituality is not found in ethereal experiences, but in practical expressions of love. My goal is to save souls, to snatch them from the jaws of the destroyer. I must lead them to the truth and to the only one who is able to save. Ezekiel 3:18 When I say unto the wicked, Thou shalt surely die; and thou givest him not warning, nor speakest to warn the wicked from his wicked way, to save his life; the same wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at thine hand. Matthew 28:19-20 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen. Ellen G. White encourages us, saying, “We are to warn the people of the snares that the enemy is preparing for them. We are to lift up our voices against Spiritualism, and against every other device of Satan” (Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 5, 86). “The Lord bids us let the light shine, and to make no apology for possessing it. The truth will stand the test of law and testimony” (Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 5, 453, 1885). Sr. White also states, “We are to present the truth in love, with a spirit of meekness and lowliness, but with boldness and authority” (Evangelism, 230, 1946). Proverbs 11:30 states, “The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise.” Moreover, Jude 1:22-23 urges us to have compassion on some, making a difference, while others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire, hating even the garment spotted by the flesh. Sr. White encourages us, saying, “We are to warn the people of the snares that the enemy is preparing for them. We are to lift up our voices against Spiritualism, and against every other device of Satan” (Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 5, 86). In what ways can we mend the fabric of a deceived society?
TRUTH’S MIGHTY WEAVE!
The world is a tapestry woven with threads of truth and falsehood, and Spiritualism is a masterfully crafted deception. We must be weavers of truth, mending the tears in the fabric of society, and restoring the divine pattern. Our task is not easy, but it is essential. The stakes are eternal, and the time is short. Matthew 24:14 And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come. 2 Peter 3:12 Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat? Ellen G. White states, “Only those who have been diligent students of the Scriptures and who have received the love of the truth will be shielded from the powerful delusion that takes the world captive” (The Great Controversy, 625, 1911). “The Scriptures are given to us as the rule of faith and practice, and we are safe only as we follow their teachings” (The Review and Herald, May 3, 1887). Sr. White also warns, “Without the enlightenment of the Spirit of God we shall not be able to discern truth from error and shall fall under the masterful temptations and deceptions that Satan will bring upon the world” (The Review and Herald, November 29, 1892). We must be faithful to our calling, diligent in our study, and unwavering in our commitment to God’s Word. But what are the essential lessons to carry forward?
FINAL LIGHT SHINES!
The key takeaways are clear: Spiritualism is a counterfeit, a deception designed to lead souls astray. The only safeguard is a deep, abiding faith in the Word of God. We must be vigilant, discerning the signs of the times, and standing firm on the principles of righteousness. We must share the truth with others, guiding them to the safe haven of God’s love. Let us be faithful stewards of the truth, shining as lights in a dark world, until the day when the shadows flee, and the Son of Righteousness shines in all His glory.
1 Timothy 4:1 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;
