“Be glad then, ye children of Zion, and rejoice in the LORD your God: for he hath given you the former rain moderately, and he will cause to come down for you the rain, the former rain, and the latter rain in the first month” (Joel 2:23, KJV).
ABSTRACT
This exhaustive field guide diagnoses our spiritual drought by revisiting the 1888 crisis, prescribes medical missionary work as the active sickle for the final harvest, extracts structural lessons from pioneer experiences, and mandates the urgent, practical reconstruction of God’s household to welcome the imminent influx of souls.
WHAT DEFINES OUR EXISTENCE NOW?
If a singular sensation defines our twenty-first-century spiritual existence, it is waiting for a sound not yet arrived. We are a people of the interval, standing between the “former rain” of Pentecost and the “latter rain” of the loud cry, our sickle suspended. “Then shall we know, if we follow on to know the LORD: his going forth is prepared as the morning; and he shall come unto us as the rain, as the latter and former rain unto the earth” (Hosea 6:3, KJV). “That I will give you the rain of your land in his due season, the first rain and the latter rain, that thou mayest gather in thy corn, and thy wine, and thine oil” (Deuteronomy 11:14, KJV). “Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord” (James 5:7, KJV). “For the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea” (Habakkuk 2:14, KJV). “Ask ye of the LORD rain in the time of the latter rain; so the LORD shall make bright clouds, and give them showers of rain, to every one grass in the field” (Zechariah 10:1, KJV). “Sow to yourselves in righteousness, reap in mercy; break up your fallow ground: for it is time to seek the LORD, till he come and rain righteousness upon you” (Hosea 10:12, KJV). Ellen G. White wrote that “The great work of the gospel is not to close with less manifestation of the power of God than marked its opening” (The Great Controversy, p. 611, 1911). In Testimonies to Ministers and Gospel Workers we read, “The convocations of the church, as in camp meetings, the assemblies of the home church, and all occasions where there is instruction in the Scriptures, should be times of earnest prayer for the latter rain” (Testimonies to Ministers and Gospel Workers, p. 508, 1923). She observed, “The coming of Christ is nearer than when we first believed” (The Desire of Ages, p. 634, 1898). She further noted, “The outpouring of the Spirit in the days of the apostles was the ‘former rain,’ and glorious was the result. But the latter rain will be more abundant” (Evangelism, p. 701, 1946). She also stated, “The latter rain will never refresh and invigorate the indolent, who do not use the powers God has given them” (Review and Herald, June 10, 1884). Finally, she declared, “We must have the latter rain; we must have the oil; we must have the glory that is to attend the third angel’s message” (Manuscript Releases, vol. 5, p. 151, 1990). This suspended posture defines our age, so what specific tasks now guide our collective calling?
HARVEST: WHAT TASKS GUIDE OUR CALLING?
We are naturalists of grace and the end times, tasked with welcoming a catastrophic harvest, a violent separation requiring a sharp sickle. “Put ye in the sickle, for the harvest is ripe: come, get you down; for the press is full, the fats overflow; for their wickedness is great” (Joel 3:13, KJV). “And another angel came out of the temple, crying with a loud voice to him that sat on the cloud, Thrust in thy sickle, and reap: for the time is come for thee to reap; for the harvest of the earth is ripe” (Revelation 14:15, KJV). “Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn” (Matthew 13:30, KJV). “The field is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom; but the tares are the children of the wicked one” (Matthew 13:38, KJV). “But he that soweth the good seed is the Son of man” (Matthew 13:37, KJV). “And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other” (Matthew 24:31, KJV). Through inspired counsel we are told, “The harvest of the earth is nearly ripe” (Testimonies for the Church, vol. 1, p. 261, 1855). Sr. White affirmed, “The time has come when the message of Christ’s soon coming is to sound throughout the world” (Testimonies for the Church, vol. 9, p. 24, 1909). She explained, “The harvest is the end of the world” (Christ’s Object Lessons, p. 70, 1900). She further described, “The final movements will be rapid ones” (Last Day Events, p. 11, 1992). She cautioned, “The time of test is just upon us, for the loud cry of the third angel has already begun in the revelation of the righteousness of Christ, the sin-pardoning Redeemer” (The Great Controversy, p. 615, 1911). She also warned, “The end will come more quickly than men expect” (The Great Controversy, p. 631, 1911). This catastrophic mandate raises an analytical question: how must we deconstruct this period of active waiting?
HOW MUST WE DECONSTRUCT WAITING?
Deconstructing this wait requires both the hedgehog’s one big truth and the fox’s myriad details, from 1888 to health reform, all under the shadow of Christ’s return. “Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints” (Jude 1:14, KJV). “For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first” (1 Thessalonians 4:16, KJV). “But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only” (Matthew 24:36, KJV). “Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come” (Matthew 24:42, KJV). “Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh” (Matthew 24:44, KJV). “And what I say unto you I say unto all, Watch” (Mark 13:37, KJV). Sr. White observed, “God designs that the plan of redemption shall come to men as the latter rain” (Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 509, 1890). She stated, “The latter rain is to fall upon the people of God. A mighty angel is to come down from heaven, and the whole earth is to be lighted with his glory” (Christian Service, p. 155, 1925). She asked, “Why has the history of the work of the message of 1888 been repeated?” (Selected Messages, book 1, p. 234, 1958). She explained, “Only as they were willing to be guided by His Spirit could they hope to receive the latter rain” (Prophets and Kings, p. 334, 1917). She lamented, “The light that is to lighten the whole earth with its glory was resisted, and by the action of our own brethren has been in a great degree kept away from the world” (Selected Messages, book 1, p. 235, 1958). She urged, “We need the baptism of the Spirit of God. We need the latter rain” (Manuscript Releases, vol. 8, p. 212, 1990). This analytical framework equips us, but what does welcoming this harvest truly and practically mean?
WHAT DOES HARVEST MEAN PRACTICALLY?
Welcoming the harvest demands reconstructing our household’s architecture to withstand the influx, moving beyond polemics to a quiet confidence forged in historical trial. “Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste” (Isaiah 28:16, KJV). “For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ” (1 Corinthians 3:11, KJV). “Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain” (Psalm 127:1, KJV). “Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God” (Ephesians 2:19, KJV). “But Christ as a son over his own house; whose house are we, if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end” (Hebrews 3:6, KJV). “Let all things be done decently and in order” (1 Corinthians 14:40, KJV). The inspired pen notes, “The work of preparation is an individual work” (Counsels on Health, p. 425, 1923). A passage from Education reminds us, “The greatest want of the world is the want of men—men who will not be bought or sold, men who in their inmost souls are true and honest, men who do not fear to call sin by its right name, men whose conscience is as true to duty as the needle to the pole, men who will stand for the right though the heavens fall” (Education, p. 57, 1903). Sr. White affirmed, “God is a God of order. Everything connected with heaven is in perfect order” (Testimonies for the Church, vol. 4, p. 199, 1875). She explained, “Order and system are brought out of confusion by wise planning and earnest, energetic work” (Evangelism, p. 93, 1946). She warned, “The church is God’s appointed agency for the salvation of men” (The Acts of the Apostles, p. 9, 1911). She declared, “The formation of character is the work of a lifetime” (Counsels to Parents, Teachers, and Students, p. 61, 1913). This reconstruction is urgent, but why does this specific guide demand our immediate attention?
WHY DOES THIS GUIDE DEMAND ATTENTION?
This document is an urgent, exhaustive field guide because time is short, the devil lurks in details, and the storm clouds are gathering. “Redeeming the time, because the days are evil” (Ephesians 5:16, KJV). “The night cometh, when no man can work” (John 9:4, KJV). “Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation” (2 Corinthians 6:2, KJV). “And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed” (Romans 13:11, KJV). “To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven” (Ecclesiastes 3:1, KJV). “Walk in wisdom toward them that are without, redeeming the time” (Colossians 4:5, KJV). Through inspired counsel, Sr. White conveyed, “The end is near. We have not a moment to lose” (Last Day Events, p. 36, 1992). In The Great Controversy we read, “Probation closes when the work of the gospel is completed” (Last Day Events, p. 227, 1992). She stressed, “The time of grace will close suddenly, unexpectedly” (The Great Controversy, p. 623, 1911). She urged, “We should pray as earnestly for the descent of the Holy Spirit as the disciples prayed on the day of Pentecost” (The Acts of the Apostles, p. 37, 1911). She implored, “Let us, with contrite hearts, pray most earnestly that now, in the time of the latter rain, the showers of grace may fall upon us” (Testimonies for the Church, vol. 8, p. 21, 1904). She commanded, “At every meeting we attend our prayers should ascend, that at this very time God will impart warmth and moisture to our souls” (Testimonies for the Church, vol. 8, p. 21, 1904). This pervasive urgency focuses us on the source of power, so what central engine actually powers this final harvest?
WHAT ENGINE POWERS FINAL HARVEST?
The harvest engine is atmospheric divine power, not human effort, modeled on Israel’s agrarian dependence on two distinct rainy seasons we have misunderstood. “For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater” (Isaiah 55:10, KJV). “Are there any among the vanities of the Gentiles that can cause rain? or can the heavens give showers? art not thou he, O LORD our God? therefore we will wait upon thee: for thou hast made all these things” (Jeremiah 14:22, KJV). “He shall come down like rain upon the mown grass: as showers that water the earth” (Psalm 72:6, KJV). “My doctrine shall drop as the rain, my speech shall distil as the dew, as the small rain upon the tender herb, and as the showers upon the grass” (Deuteronomy 32:2, KJV). “Thou, O God, didst send a plentiful rain, whereby thou didst confirm thine inheritance, when it was weary” (Psalm 68:9, KJV). “Then shall he give the rain for thy seed, wherewith thou shalt sow the ground; and bread of the increase of the ground, and it shall be fat and plenteous” (Isaiah 30:23, KJV). A prophetic voice emphasized, “The latter rain is coming on those that are pure in heart” (Manuscript Releases, vol. 1, p. 178, 1990). The inspired pen states, “The Lord will soon come and take His faithful ones to Himself. We must prepare for that event by a better experience in spiritual things” (Review and Herald, April 12, 1892). Sr. White explained, “The prophecies which were fulfilled in the outpouring of the former rain at the opening of the gospel are again to be fulfilled in the latter rain at its close” (The Great Controversy, p. 611, 1911). She taught, “The measure of the Holy Spirit we receive will be proportioned to the measure of our desire and the faith exercised for it” (Review and Herald, November 5, 1895). She clarified, “The latter rain will come, and the blessing of God will fill every soul that is purified from every defilement” (Letters and Manuscripts, vol. 14, Ms 27, 1899). Understanding this divine engine forces a distinction, so how do the former and latter rains fundamentally differ?
HOW DO FORMER AND LATTER DIFFER?
The former rain germinates; the latter rain ripens for harvest, distinct seasons in nature that model the Spirit’s operations, a truth we must ask for in its specific time. “For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to shew himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him” (2 Chronicles 16:9, KJV). “If ye walk in my statutes, and keep my commandments, and do them; Then I will give you rain in due season, and the land shall yield her increase, and the trees of the field shall yield their fruit” (Leviticus 26:3-4, KJV). “I will give you the rain of your land in his due season, the first rain and the latter rain” (Deuteronomy 11:14, KJV). “And it shall come to pass, if ye shall hearken diligently unto my commandments which I command you this day, to love the LORD your God, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul, That I will give you the rain of your land in his due season” (Deuteronomy 11:13-14, KJV). “The LORD shall open unto thee his good treasure, the heaven to give the rain unto thy land in his season” (Deuteronomy 28:12, KJV). “And it shall come to pass, that before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear” (Isaiah 65:24, KJV). In Prophets and Kings we read, “The latter rain is the teacher of righteousness according to righteousness” (Review and Herald, March 2, 1897). Sr. White explained, “God designs that the plan of redemption shall come to men as the latter rain” (Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 509, 1890). She stated, “The latter rain is to fall upon the people of God. A mighty angel is to come down from heaven, and the whole earth is to be lighted with his glory” (Christian Service, p. 155, 1925). She declared, “We must have the latter rain; we must have the oil; we must have the glory that is to attend the third angel’s message” (Manuscript Releases, vol. 5, p. 151, 1990). She reminded, “The Lord will soon come and take His faithful ones to Himself. We must prepare for that event by a better experience in spiritual things” (Review and Herald, April 12, 1892). This distinction is critical, but what specific roles do these rains play in both agriculture and spirit?
WHAT ROLES DO RAINS PLAY IN SPIRIT?
The former rain (moreh) at seedtime germinates conviction; the latter rain (malkosh) before harvest ripens character, both being operations of the Holy Spirit preparing the soul for the sickle. “For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground: I will pour my spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thine offspring” (Isaiah 44:3, KJV). “And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions” (Joel 2:28, KJV). The inspired pen describes, “The outpouring of the Spirit in the days of the apostles was the ‘former rain,’ and glorious was the result. But the latter rain will be more abundant” (Evangelism, p. 701, 1946). A passage from Christian Service reminds us, “The latter rain is to fall upon the people of God. A mighty angel is to come down from heaven, and the whole earth is to be lighted with his glory” (Christian Service, p. 155, 1925). Sr. White taught, “The measure of the Holy Spirit we receive will be proportioned to the measure of our desire and the faith exercised for it” (Review and Herald, November 5, 1895). She explained, “The latter rain will come, and the blessing of God will fill every soul that is purified from every defilement” (Letters and Manuscripts, vol. 14, Ms 27, 1899). She clarified, “The latter rain is the teacher of righteousness according to righteousness” (Review and Herald, March 2, 1897). This understanding of roles reveals a dependency, so how does the latter rain critically depend on the former?
HOW DOES LATTER DEPEND ON FORMER?
The latter rain’s ripening power depends entirely on the former rain’s germination; without the early work of repentance and conversion, the latter showers create only mud, not harvest. “Sow to yourselves in righteousness, reap in mercy; break up your fallow ground: for it is time to seek the LORD, till he come and rain righteousness upon you” (Hosea 10:12, KJV). “Let us know, let us pursue the knowledge of the LORD. His going forth is established as the morning; He will come to us like the rain, Like the latter and former rain to the earth” (Hosea 6:3, KJV). “Break up your fallow ground, and sow not among thorns” (Jeremiah 4:3, KJV). “For thus saith the LORD to the men of Judah and Jerusalem, Break up your fallow ground, and sow not among thorns” (Jeremiah 4:3, KJV). “Cast away from you all your transgressions, whereby ye have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit: for why will ye die, O house of Israel?” (Ezekiel 18:31, KJV). “Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me” (Psalm 51:10, KJV). Sr. White noted, “The latter rain will never refresh and invigorate the indolent, who do not use the powers God has given them” (Review and Herald, June 10, 1884). Through inspired counsel we are told, “We need the baptism of the Spirit of God. We need the latter rain” (Manuscript Releases, vol. 8, p. 212, 1990). She warned, “Unless the former rain has fallen, there will be no life; the green blade will not spring up. Unless the early showers have done their work, the latter rain can bring no seed to perfection” (Testimonies to Ministers and Gospel Workers, p. 506, 1923). She explained, “The latter rain, falling near the close of the season, ripens the grain and prepares it for the sickle” (Testimonies to Ministers and Gospel Workers, p. 506, 1923). She declared, “We must have the latter rain; we must have the oil; we must have the glory that is to attend the third angel’s message” (Manuscript Releases, vol. 5, p. 151, 1990). This dependency serves as our diagnostic, so what happens if we pray for power without prior preparation?
WHAT IF PRAYER LACKS PREPARATION?
Praying for the Loud Cry’s power without experiencing the former rain of repentance and victory over sin is asking God to ripen dead seeds, producing only spiritual mud. “Be ye also patient; stablish your hearts: for the coming of the Lord draweth nigh” (James 5:8, KJV). “Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh” (Matthew 24:44, KJV). “Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak” (Matthew 26:41, KJV). “If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me” (Psalm 66:18, KJV). “He that turneth away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayer shall be abomination” (Proverbs 28:9, KJV). “And when ye spread forth your hands, I will hide mine eyes from you: yea, when ye make many prayers, I will not hear: your hands are full of blood” (Isaiah 1:15, KJV). A prophetic voice advised, “Ask for the old paths, where the good way is, and walk in it” (Selected Messages, book 1, p. 206, 1958). In The Acts of the Apostles we read, “Before the day of the Lord shall come, the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars of heaven shall fall” (The Acts of the Apostles, p. 259, 1911). Sr. White warned, “Unless the former rain has fallen, there will be no life; the green blade will not spring up. Unless the early showers have done their work, the latter rain can bring no seed to perfection” (Testimonies to Ministers and Gospel Workers, p. 506, 1923). She stated, “The latter rain will never refresh and invigorate the indolent, who do not use the powers God has given them” (Review and Herald, June 10, 1884). She explained, “We must have the latter rain; we must have the oil; we must have the glory that is to attend the third angel’s message” (Manuscript Releases, vol. 5, p. 151, 1990). This diagnostic reveals our flaw, forcing a historical question: why must we painfully revisit the 1888 crisis?
1888: WHY REVISIT THAT PAINFUL CRISIS?
We revisit 1888 because its trauma is the ghost in our machine, the rejection of the “beginning” of the Latter Rain, the Righteousness by Faith message identified as the third angel’s message in verity. “Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference” (Romans 3:22, KJV). “Being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ” (Romans 5:1, KJV). “Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ” (Romans 5:1, KJV). “For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith” (Romans 1:17, KJV). “But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets” (Romans 3:21, KJV). “And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith” (Philippians 3:9, KJV). Sr. White declared, “The Lord in His great mercy sent a most precious message to His people through Elders Waggoner and Jones” (Testimonies to Ministers and Gospel Workers, p. 91, 1923). The inspired pen asserts, “This message was to bring more prominently before the world the uplifted Saviour, the sacrifice for the sins of the whole world” (Testimonies to Ministers and Gospel Workers, p. 91, 1923). She lamented, “The message of 1888 was rejected” (Selected Messages, book 1, p. 234, 1958). She explained, “An unwillingness to yield up preconceived opinions, and to accept this truth, lay at the foundation of a large share of the opposition manifested at Minneapolis against the Lord’s message through Brethren [E.J.] Waggoner and [A.T.] Jones” (Selected Messages, book 1, p. 234, 1958). She warned, “If we had accepted the message in 1888, the Lord would have worked for us in a remarkable manner” (Manuscript Releases, vol. 9, p. 320, 1990). This historical pivot is clear, but what specifically characterized the response that met this message?
WHAT CHARACTERIZED REJECTION?
The response was a “human machinery” of resistance, chilling in its familiarity, led by venerable men like Uriah Smith who viewed the message as fanaticism, rooted in pride and preconceived opinion. “Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall” (Proverbs 16:18, KJV). “For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world” (1 John 2:16, KJV). “Only by pride cometh contention: but with the well advised is wisdom” (Proverbs 13:10, KJV). “The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate” (Proverbs 8:13, KJV). “A man’s pride shall bring him low: but honour shall uphold the humble in spirit” (Proverbs 29:23, KJV). “For if a man think himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceiveth himself” (Galatians 6:3, KJV). A passage from Selected Messages reminds us, “The message of 1888 was rejected” (Selected Messages, book 1, p. 234, 1958). Through inspired counsel we are told, “An unwillingness to yield up preconceived opinions, and to accept this truth, lay at the foundation of a large share of the opposition manifested at Minneapolis against the Lord’s message through Brethren [E.J.] Waggoner and [A.T.] Jones” (Selected Messages, book 1, p. 234, 1958). Sr. White observed, “The light that is to lighten the whole earth with its glory was resisted, and by the action of our own brethren has been in a great degree kept away from the world” (Selected Messages, book 1, p. 235, 1958). She warned, “Men of talent and pleasing address, who once rejoiced in the truth, employ their powers to deceive and mislead souls” (The Great Controversy, p. 591, 1911). She advised, “We must study the truth for ourselves. No man should be relied upon to think for us” (The Great Controversy, p. 598, 1911). This historical resistance is not academic, so how does it directly affect our spiritual condition now?
HOW DOES IT AFFECT US NOW?
The 1888 rejection is the direct etiology of our current drought; the “human machinery” that swept away man’s inventions also rejected the Spirit’s, leaving us focused on prophecy charts but bereft of its animating righteousness. “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you” (Matthew 6:33, KJV). “In his days shall the righteous flourish; and abundance of peace so long as the moon endureth” (Psalm 72:7, KJV). “For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost” (Romans 14:17, KJV). “And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever” (Isaiah 32:17, KJV). “My righteousness is near; my salvation is gone forth, and mine arms shall judge the people; the isles shall wait upon me, and on mine arm shall they trust” (Isaiah 51:5, KJV). “But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption” (1 Corinthians 1:30, KJV). Sr. White warned, “If we had accepted the message in 1888, the Lord would have worked for us in a remarkable manner” (Manuscript Releases, vol. 9, p. 320, 1990). The inspired pen conveys, “The light that is to lighten the whole earth with its glory was resisted, and by the action of our own brethren has been in a great degree kept away from the world” (Selected Messages, book 1, p. 235, 1958). She stated, “The message of 1888 was rejected” (Selected Messages, book 1, p. 234, 1958). She explained, “An unwillingness to yield up preconceived opinions, and to accept this truth, lay at the foundation of a large share of the opposition manifested at Minneapolis against the Lord’s message” (Selected Messages, book 1, p. 234, 1958). She lamented, “We have nothing to fear for the future, except as we shall forget the way the Lord has led us, and His teaching in our past history” (Life Sketches, p. 196, 1915). This condition offers a stark lesson, so what specific warning does Uriah Smith’s example teach us?
WHAT WARNING DOES SMITH TEACH?
Uriah Smith teaches that technical prophetic correctness is spiritually insufficient; the Latter Rain is not new information but power to proclaim old truths with life-giving conviction, moving from argument to Spirit-infused authority. “Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts” (Zechariah 4:6, KJV). “And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions” (Joel 2:28, KJV). “For our gospel came not unto you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Ghost, and in much assurance” (1 Thessalonians 1:5, KJV). “And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man’s wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power” (1 Corinthians 2:4, KJV). “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me” (Acts 1:8, KJV). “For the kingdom of God is not in word, but in power” (1 Corinthians 4:20, KJV). A prophetic voice stated, “The latter rain is the teacher of righteousness according to righteousness” (Review and Herald, March 2, 1897). In Letters and Manuscripts we read, “The latter rain will come, and the blessing of God will fill every soul that is purified from every defilement” (Letters and Manuscripts, vol. 14, Ms 27, 1899). Sr. White explained, “The outpouring of the Spirit in the days of the apostles was the ‘former rain,’ and glorious was the result. But the latter rain will be more abundant” (Evangelism, p. 701, 1946). 598, 1911). This lesson points to our need, so how do we practically break this spiritual drought?
HOW DO WE BREAK THIS DROUGHT?
We break the drought by changing the spiritual pressure system through humility, prayer, seeking God’s face, and turning from wickedness, thereby inviting the latter rain showers. “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land” (2 Chronicles 7:14, KJV). “Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded” (James 4:8, KJV). “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you” (Matthew 7:7, KJV). “Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not” (Jeremiah 33:3, KJV). “And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart” (Jeremiah 29:13, KJV). “But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him” (Hebrews 11:6, KJV). Sr. White counseled, “Let us, with contrite hearts, pray most earnestly that now, in the time of the latter rain, the showers of grace may fall upon us” (Testimonies for the Church, vol. 8, p. 21, 1904). The inspired pen urges, “At every meeting we attend our prayers should ascend, that at this very time God will impart warmth and moisture to our souls” (Testimonies for the Church, vol. 8, p. 21, 1904). She emphasized, “We should pray as earnestly for the descent of the Holy Spirit as the disciples prayed on the day of Pentecost” (The Acts of the Apostles, p. 37, 1911). She explained, “The measure of the Holy Spirit we receive will be proportioned to the measure of our desire and the faith exercised for it” (Review and Herald, November 5, 1895). She declared, “We need the baptism of the Spirit of God. We need the latter rain” (Manuscript Releases, vol. 8, p. 212, 1990). Breaking the drought requires specific conditions, so what are the non-negotiable conditions for the rain’s return?
WHAT CONDITIONS FACILITATE RAIN?
The rain’s return requires the cessation of dissension, active waiting through aggressive prayer, and the ripening of character through daily sanctification, unifying the field for the downpour. “Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace” (Ephesians 4:3, KJV). “Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment” (1 Corinthians 1:10, KJV). “Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!” (Psalm 133:1, KJV). “That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me” (John 17:21, KJV). “Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind” (Philippians 2:2, KJV). “Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous” (1 Peter 3:8, KJV). A passage from Christian Temperance and Bible Hygiene reminds us, “Unity is strength; disunion is weakness and defeat” (Christian Temperance and Bible Hygiene, p. 165, 1890). Through inspired counsel we are told, “Press together, press together” (Evangelism, p. 104, 1946). Sr. White explained, “Unity is the sure result of Christian perfection” (Sanctified Life, p. 85, 1889). She stated, “The formation of character is the work of a lifetime” (Counsels to Parents, Teachers, and Students, p. 61, 1913). She declared, “Character building is the most important work ever entrusted to human beings” (Education, p. 225, 1903). Meeting these conditions prepares for action, so what is the primary tool that embodies the harvest mechanism?
WHAT IS THE HARVEST’S PRIMARY TOOL?
Medical missionary work is the sickle of the harvest, the “right hand” that gathers sheaves, the practical mechanism through which the Latter Rain’s energy is applied to gather souls. “Heal the sick that are therein, and say unto them, The kingdom of God is come nigh unto you” (Luke 10:9, KJV). “And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him” (James 5:15, KJV). “Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world” (James 1:27, KJV). “Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ” (Galatians 6:2, KJV). “For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in” (Matthew 25:35, KJV). “And whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward” (Matthew 10:42, KJV). Sr. White affirmed, “Medical missionary work is the pioneer work of the gospel” (The Ministry of Healing, p. 144, 1905). The inspired pen explains, “Christ’s method alone will give true success in reaching the people. The Saviour mingled with men as one who desired their good. He showed His sympathy for them, ministered to their needs, and won their confidence. Then He bade them, ‘Follow Me’” (The Ministry of Healing, p. 143, 1905). She stressed, “Medical missionary work brings to humanity the gospel of release from suffering” (Medical Ministry, p. 239, 1932). In Welfare Ministry we read, “We are to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, and comfort the suffering and afflicted” (Welfare Ministry, p. 29, 1952). This tool is powerful, but what theology underlies this “right arm” of the message?
WHAT THEOLOGY UNDERLIES THE ARM?
The theology underlying this arm is the Gospel’s somatic component; “medical missionary work is the gospel in practice,” integrating body and spirit, making the third angel’s proclamation tangible and accessible. “Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth” (3 John 1:2, KJV). “Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:31, KJV). “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service” (Romans 12:1, KJV). “Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?” (1 Corinthians 6:19, KJV). “And God hath both raised up the Lord, and will also raise up us by his own power” (1 Corinthians 6:14, KJV). “But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you” (Romans 8:11, KJV). A passage from Healthful Living reminds us, “The misuse of our physical powers shortens the period of time in which our lives can be used for the glory of God” (Healthful Living, p. 29, 1897). Through inspired counsel we are told, “The body is to be brought into subjection to the higher powers of the being” (Counsels on Diet and Foods, p. 73, 1938). Sr. White explained, “The union of Christlike work for the body and Christlike work for the soul is the true interpretation of the gospel” (Welfare Ministry, p. 33, 1952). She taught, “Anything that lessens physical strength enfeebles the mind and makes it less capable of discriminating between right and wrong” (Christ’s Object Lessons, p. 346, 1900). She warned, “The health should be as sacredly guarded as the character” (Counsels on Health, p. 66, 1923). This integrated theology addresses a core problem, so what specific condition often locks the human heart against the message?
WHAT LOCKS THE HUMAN HEART?
The human heart is often locked by prejudice, suffering, or a violated physical constitution; a body in disrepair clouds the mind, making the soul impervious to spiritual truth. “Know ye not that your bodies are the members of Christ? shall I then take the members of Christ, and make them the members of an harlot? God forbid” (1 Corinthians 6:15, KJV). “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service” (Romans 12:1, KJV). “The spirit of a man will sustain his infirmity; but a wounded spirit who can bear?” (Proverbs 18:14, KJV). “A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones” (Proverbs 17:22, KJV). “The heart knoweth his own bitterness; and a stranger doth not intermeddle with his joy” (Proverbs 14:10, KJV). “Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life” (Proverbs 4:23, KJV). Sr. White observed, “Anything that lessens physical strength enfeebles the mind and makes it less capable of discriminating between right and wrong” (Christ’s Object Lessons, p. 346, 1900). The inspired pen warns, “The health should be as sacredly guarded as the character” (Counsels on Health, p. 66, 1923). She explained, “A disordered stomach is productive of a disordered, uncertain state of mind” (Counsels on Diet and Foods, p. 375, 1938). She stated, “The brain nerves which communicate with the entire system are the only medium through which Heaven can communicate to man and affect his inmost life” (Testimonies for the Church, vol. 2, p. 347, 1868). She declared, “The misuse of our physical powers shortens the period of time in which our lives can be used for the glory of God” (Healthful Living, p. 29, 1897). Understanding this lock requires a key, so how is medical missionary work specifically defined for our application?
HOW IS THIS WORK DEFINED?
Medical missionary work is defined in a narrow professional sense and a broader sense of any Christlike aid to suffering, the latter being the domain of every member to find Christ’s footprints beside the sickbed. “Distributing to the necessity of saints; given to hospitality” (Romans 12:13, KJV). “But to do good and to communicate forget not: for with such sacrifices God is well pleased” (Hebrews 13:16, KJV). A prophetic voice stressed, “Medical missionary work brings to humanity the gospel of release from suffering” (Medical Ministry, p. 239, 1932). In Welfare Ministry we read, “We are to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, and comfort the suffering and afflicted” (Welfare Ministry, p. 29, 1952). Sr. White explained, “The union of Christlike work for the body and Christlike work for the soul is the true interpretation of the gospel” (Welfare Ministry, p. 33, 1952). She affirmed, “Medical missionary work is the pioneer work of the gospel” (The Ministry of Healing, p. 144, 1905). She instructed, “We must adapt our work to the needs of the people we wish to reach” (Medical Ministry, p. 315, 1932). This work is not peripheral, so what profound correlation exists between health reform and the seal of God?
WHAT CORRELATES HEALTH AND SEAL?
A direct correlation exists between health reform and the seal of God; a clear mind through a clean body is the instrument prepared to receive the divine imprint, clearing the frequency for the third angel’s message. “And ye shall serve the LORD your God, and he shall bless thy bread, and thy water; and I will take sickness away from the midst of thee” (Exodus 23:25, KJV). “It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones” (Proverbs 3:8, KJV). “If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are” (1 Corinthians 3:17, KJV). “And God hath both raised up the Lord, and will also raise up us by his own power” (1 Corinthians 6:14, KJV). Sr. White taught, “The brain nerves which communicate with the entire system are the only medium through which Heaven can communicate to man and affect his inmost life” (Testimonies for the Church, vol. 2, p. 347, 1868). The inspired pen clarifies, “A disordered stomach is productive of a disordered, uncertain state of mind” (Counsels on Diet and Foods, p. 375, 1938). She explained, “The seal of the living God will be placed upon those only who bear a likeness to Christ in character” (Review and Herald, May 21, 1895). She elaborated, “Just as soon as the people of God are sealed in their foreheads—it is not any seal or mark that can be seen, but a settling into the truth, both intellectually and spiritually, so they cannot be moved—just as soon as God’s people are sealed and prepared for the shaking, it will come” (Manuscript Releases, vol. 1, p. 249, 1990). She warned, “The misuse of our physical powers shortens the period of time in which our lives can be used for the glory of God” (Healthful Living, p. 29, 1897). This correlation demands wise leadership, so how should church leadership correctly approach this work?
HOW SHOULD LEADERS APPROACH?
Leadership must be shrewd, supporting sound medical missionary schemes as the church’s work while avoiding secular humanitarian decoys, ensuring the arm remains connected to the gospel body. “For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ” (1 Corinthians 12:12, KJV). “And whether one member suffer, all the members suffer with it; or one member be honoured, all the members rejoice with it” (1 Corinthians 12:26, KJV). “And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ” (Ephesians 4:11-12, KJV). “Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular” (1 Corinthians 12:27, KJV). “From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love” (Ephesians 4:16, KJV). “Let all things be done decently and in order” (1 Corinthians 14:40, KJV). A passage from Medical Ministry reminds us, “The medical work is not to be divorced from the gospel ministry” (Medical Ministry, p. 240, 1932). Through inspired counsel we are told, “The union of Christlike work for the body and Christlike work for the soul is the true interpretation of the gospel” (Welfare Ministry, p. 33, 1952). Sr. White warned, “The medical work is not to be divorced from the gospel ministry” (Medical Ministry, p. 240, 1932). She explained, “We must adapt our work to the needs of the people we wish to reach” (Medical Ministry, p. 315, 1932). She declared, “God is a God of order. Everything connected with heaven is in perfect order” (Testimonies for the Church, vol. 4, p. 199, 1875). With this approach, we look to our foundations, so what crucial lessons do our pioneers offer for this preparation?
WHAT LESSONS FROM PIONEERS?
Our pioneers lived in “harvest anxiety” mirroring our own; their writings provide a roadmap for navigating delay, teaching us to build on tested foundations, not to start anew. “Remember the days of old, consider the years of many generations: ask thy father, and he will shew thee; thy elders, and they will tell thee” (Deuteronomy 32:7, KJV). “That thou shouldest enter into covenant with the LORD thy God, and into his oath, which the LORD thy God maketh with thee this day” (Deuteronomy 29:12, KJV). “Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls” (Jeremiah 6:16, KJV). “Remove not the ancient landmark, which thy fathers have set” (Proverbs 22:28, KJV). “Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls” (Jeremiah 6:16, KJV). “For inquire, I pray thee, of the former age, and prepare thyself to the search of their fathers” (Job 8:8, KJV). Sr. White reflected, “We have nothing to fear for the future, except as we shall forget the way the Lord has led us, and His teaching in our past history” (Life Sketches, p. 196, 1915). The inspired pen recounts, “God has given us much instruction line upon line, precept upon precept” (Selected Messages, book 2, p. 19, 1958). She stated, “The formation of character is the work of a lifetime” (Counsels to Parents, Teachers, and Students, p. 61, 1913). She explained, “Order and system are brought out of confusion by wise planning and earnest, energetic work” (Evangelism, p. 93, 1946). She declared, “Character building is the most important work ever entrusted to human beings” (Education, p. 225, 1903). These collective lessons are embodied individually, so what specific contribution did James White make to our structure?
WHAT DID JAMES WHITE CONTRIBUTE?
James White contributed pragmatic “Gospel Order,” realizing disorganized harvesters lose grain; organization creates the barn for sheaves, a prerequisite for the outpouring, funded by systematic benevolence. “Let all things be done decently and in order” (1 Corinthians 14:40, KJV). “For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints” (1 Corinthians 14:33, KJV). “And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ” (Ephesians 4:11-12, KJV). “Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment” (1 Corinthians 1:10, KJV). “And let ours also learn to maintain good works for necessary uses, that they be not unfruitful” (Titus 3:14, KJV). “Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come” (1 Corinthians 16:2, KJV). A prophetic voice shared, “Order and system are brought out of confusion by wise planning and earnest, energetic work” (Evangelism, p. 93, 1946). In Testimonies for the Church we read, “God is a God of order. Everything connected with heaven is in perfect order” (Testimonies for the Church, vol. 4, p. 199, 1875). Sr. White explained, “Systematic benevolence should be practiced by all” (Testimonies for the Church, vol. 3, p. 412, 1873). She stated, “The formation of character is the work of a lifetime” (Counsels to Parents, Teachers, and Students, p. 61, 1913). She declared, “Character building is the most important work ever entrusted to human beings” (Education, p. 225, 1903). While White provided structure, another pioneer provided identity, so what did Joseph Bates specifically bring to the harvest?
WHAT DID JOSEPH BATES BRING?
Joseph Bates brought the Sabbath as the “Seal” to the harvest, arguing it is the identity of the harvested grain, the mark that prevents destruction, the truth rising like the sun from the east. “And hallow my sabbaths; and they shall be a sign between me and you, that ye may know that I am the LORD your God” (Ezekiel 20:20, KJV). “Bind up the testimony, seal the law among my disciples” (Isaiah 8:16, KJV). “Moreover also I gave them my sabbaths, to be a sign between me and them, that they might know that I am the LORD that sanctify them” (Ezekiel 20:12, KJV). “It is a sign between me and the children of Israel for ever: for in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested, and was refreshed” (Exodus 31:17, KJV). “And I saw another angel ascending from the east, having the seal of the living God: and he cried with a loud voice to the four angels, to whom it was given to hurt the earth and the sea” (Revelation 7:2, KJV). “Saying, Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads” (Revelation 7:3, KJV). Sr. White described, “The seal of the living God will be placed upon those only who bear a likeness to Christ in character” (Review and Herald, May 21, 1895). The inspired pen elaborates, “Just as soon as the people of God are sealed in their foreheads—it is not any seal or mark that can be seen, but a settling into the truth, both intellectually and spiritually, so they cannot be moved—just as soon as God’s people are sealed and prepared for the shaking, it will come” (Manuscript Releases, vol. 1, p. 249, 1990). She explained, “The Sabbath is a sign of creative and redeeming power” (Testimonies for the Church, vol. 6, p. 350, 1900). She stated, “The seal of God is found in the fourth commandment” (The Great Controversy, p. 640, 1911). She declared, “The observance of the Sabbath is the sign of loyalty to God” (Testimonies for the Church, vol. 8, p. 198, 1904). Identity must be coupled with unity, so what principle did J.N. Andrews champion to unify the household?
WHAT UNIFIED J.N. ANDREWS?
J.N. Andrews championed unity around the “pillars” of truth, focusing on binding the community into one body, teaching that harvest requires bundled sheaves, not cords cut over doubtful disputations. “That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me” (John 17:21, KJV). “Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!” (Psalm 133:1, KJV). “Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind” (Philippians 2:2, KJV). “Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment” (1 Corinthians 1:10, KJV). “Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace” (Ephesians 4:3, KJV). “Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ” (Ephesians 4:13, KJV). A passage from The Acts of the Apostles reminds us, “Unity among believers testifies to the world that God has sent His Son to save sinners” (The Acts of the Apostles, p. 520, 1911). Through inspired counsel we are told, “Unity is the sure result of Christian perfection” (Sanctified Life, p. 85, 1889). Sr. White explained, “Unity is strength; disunion is weakness and defeat” (Christian Temperance and Bible Hygiene, p. 165, 1890). She stated, “The formation of character is the work of a lifetime” (Counsels to Parents, Teachers, and Students, p. 61, 1913). She declared, “Character building is the most important work ever entrusted to human beings” (Education, p. 225, 1903). Unity must be informed by prophecy, so what specific forecast did Uriah Smith provide for our time?
WHAT FORECAST FROM SMITH?
Uriah Smith provided the prophetic “weather forecast” with Daniel and Revelation, but serves as a cautionary tale: knowing the harvest’s math while rejecting its spirit shatters preconceived opinions without righteousness. “Surely the Lord GOD will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets” (Amos 3:7, KJV). “The secret things belong unto the LORD our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law” (Deuteronomy 29:29, KJV). “And he said, Go thy way, Daniel: for the words are closed up and sealed till the time of the end” (Daniel 12:9, KJV). “But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased” (Daniel 12:4, KJV). “Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it” (Habakkuk 2:2, KJV). “For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost” (2 Peter 1:21, KJV). Sr. White cautioned, “Men of talent and pleasing address, who once rejoiced in the truth, employ their powers to deceive and mislead souls” (The Great Controversy, p. 591, 1911). The inspired pen advises, “We must study the truth for ourselves. No man should be relied upon to think for us” (The Great Controversy, p. 598, 1911). She warned, “If we had accepted the message in 1888, the Lord would have worked for us in a remarkable manner” (Manuscript Releases, vol. 9, p. 320, 1990). She explained, “An unwillingness to yield up preconceived opinions, and to accept this truth, lay at the foundation of a large share of the opposition” (Selected Messages, book 1, p. 234, 1958). She lamented, “The light that is to lighten the whole earth with its glory was resisted” (Selected Messages, book 1, p. 235, 1958). With these foundations, we turn to application, so how do we now practically prepare God’s household?
HOW TO PREPARE THE HOUSEHOLD?
Preparing God’s household requires structural analysis and cleaning for the wedding feast, ensuring the church as the bride is ready, clean, and actively inviting guests. “Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready” (Revelation 19:7, KJV). “And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely” (Revelation 22:17, KJV). “I have decked my bed with coverings of tapestry, with carved works, with fine linen of Egypt” (Proverbs 7:16, KJV). “And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints” (Revelation 19:8, KJV). “Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it” (Ephesians 5:25, KJV). “That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word” (Ephesians 5:26, KJV). A prophetic voice proclaimed, “The church is God’s appointed agency for the salvation of men” (The Acts of the Apostles, p. 9, 1911). In Prophets and Kings we read, “God’s church is the court of holy life, filled with varied gifts and endowed with the Holy Spirit” (Prophets and Kings, p. 16, 1917). Sr. White envisioned, “The church is to be fed with manna from heaven and to be kept under the sole guardianship of His grace” (Testimonies to Ministers and Gospel Workers, p. 389, 1923). She explained, “The formation of character is the work of a lifetime” (Counsels to Parents, Teachers, and Students, p. 61, 1913). She declared, “Character building is the most important work ever entrusted to human beings” (Education, p. 225, 1903). Preparation begins with cleansing, so what internally cleanses the sanctuary of the heart?
WHAT CLEANSES SANCTUARY INTERNALLY?
The sanctuary is cleansed internally by the current reality of sin’s blotting out from the character, matching the heavenly books, through the gold of faith and white raiment of Christ’s righteousness. “Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow” (Psalm 51:7, KJV). “Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me” (Psalm 51:10, KJV). “Wash you, make you clean; put away the evil of your doings from before mine eyes; cease to do evil” (Isaiah 1:16, KJV). “Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean: from all your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you” (Ezekiel 36:25, KJV). “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9, KJV). “And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood” (Revelation 1:5, KJV). Sr. White instructed, “The work of the investigative judgment and the blotting out of sins is to be accomplished before the second coming of the Lord” (The Great Controversy, p. 485, 1911). The inspired pen details, “All who have truly repented of sin, and by faith claimed the blood of Christ as their atoning sacrifice, have had pardon entered against their names in the books of heaven” (The Great Controversy, p. 483, 1911). She explained, “The latter rain will come, and the blessing of God will fill every soul that is purified from every defilement” (Letters and Manuscripts, vol. 14, Ms 27, 1899). She warned, “Many are buried alive in the church” (Testimonies for the Church, vol. 5, p. 157, 1882). She declared, “The seal of the living God will be placed upon those only who bear a likeness to Christ in character” (Review and Herald, May 21, 1895). Cleansing is tested by crisis, so what crucible tested the community in 1914?
WHAT TESTED COMMUNITY IN 1914?
The 1914 “Shaking” over combatancy tested commandment-keeping versus national preservation, forging our identity in faithful non-conformity, a dress rehearsal for the final Sunday law crisis. “Thou shalt not kill” (Exodus 20:13, KJV). “We ought to obey God rather than men” (Acts 5:29, KJV). “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell” (Matthew 10:28, KJV). “Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men” (Acts 5:29, KJV). “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God” (Romans 12:2, KJV). “Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul” (1 Peter 2:11, KJV). A passage from Testimonies for the Church reminds us, “The time will come when we cannot sell at any price. The decree will soon go forth prohibiting men to buy or sell of any man save him that hath the mark of the beast” (Testimonies for the Church, vol. 5, p. 152, 1882). Through inspired counsel we are told, “History will repeat itself” (Review and Herald, February 26, 1914). Sr. White warned, “The final movements will be rapid ones” (Last Day Events, p. 11, 1992). She stated, “The time of test is just upon us” (The Great Controversy, p. 615, 1911). She declared, “Character building is the most important work ever entrusted to human beings” (Education, p. 225, 1903). This forged identity prepares the bride, so what specifically prepares the church as the Bride of Christ?
WHAT PREPARES THE BRIDE OF CHRIST?
The Bride is prepared by focusing on the Spirit’s deep resources, empowering all members—including women—to prophesy and labor, arrayed in the fine linen of Christ’s righteousness. “That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish” (Ephesians 5:27, KJV). Sr. White envisioned, “The church is to be fed with manna from heaven and to be kept under the sole guardianship of His grace” (Testimonies to Ministers and Gospel Workers, p. 389, 1923). The inspired pen envisions, “Women as well as men can engage in the work of hiding the truth where it can work out and be made manifest” (Evangelism, p. 465, 1946). She explained, “The formation of character is the work of a lifetime” (Counsels to Parents, Teachers, and Students, p. 61, 1913). She stated, “The seal of the living God will be placed upon those only who bear a likeness to Christ in character” (Review and Herald, May 21, 1895). She declared, “Character building is the most important work ever entrusted to human beings” (Education, p. 225, 1903). Prepared, we must engage the world, so how does the community operate effectively in the modern context?
HOW OPERATE IN MODERN CONTEXT?
We operate with principled adaptability, introducing new methods to meet modern needs while holding fast to timeless truth, being in the world but not of it. “To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven” (Ecclesiastes 3:1, KJV). “Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert” (Isaiah 43:19, KJV). “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God” (Romans 12:2, KJV). “I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some” (1 Corinthians 9:22, KJV). “Prove all things; hold fast that which is good” (1 Thessalonians 5:21, KJV). “But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear” (1 Peter 3:15, KJV). A prophetic voice guided, “New methods must be introduced” (Evangelism, p. 122, 1946). In Medical Ministry we read, “We must adapt our work to the needs of the people we wish to reach” (Medical Ministry, p. 315, 1932). Sr. White explained, “We must adapt our work to the needs of the people we wish to reach” (Medical Ministry, p. 315, 1932). She stated, “The formation of character is the work of a lifetime” (Counsels to Parents, Teachers, and Students, p. 61, 1913). She declared, “Character building is the most important work ever entrusted to human beings” (Education, p. 225, 1903). A key area for adaptation is prophecy presentation, so what approach should we take to present prophecy today?
WHAT APPROACH TO PRESENT PROPHECY?
We must use bold, visual, graphic methods to present prophetic truth as our pioneers used charts, making the mark of the beast and the New Jerusalem vivid to a visual generation. “And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy” (Revelation 13:1, KJV). “And I saw another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon” (Revelation 13:11, KJV). “And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband” (Revelation 21:2, KJV). “And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him” (Revelation 22:3, KJV). “Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it” (Habakkuk 2:2, KJV). “And he had in his hand a little book open: and he set his right foot upon the sea, and his left foot on the earth” (Revelation 10:2, KJV). Sr. White encouraged, “The Lord gave me a view of the charts and books” (Manuscript Releases, vol. 1, p. 99, 1990). The inspired pen encourages, “Illustrations should be employed to present the truths of the Bible” (Counsels to Parents, Teachers, and Students, p. 435, 1913). She explained, “We must adapt our work to the needs of the people we wish to reach” (Medical Ministry, p. 315, 1932). She stated, “New methods must be introduced” (Evangelism, p. 122, 1946). She declared, “Character building is the most important work ever entrusted to human beings” (Education, p. 225, 1903). Prophecy is more than information, so what is the deeper reality it creates for the believer?
WHAT IS PROPHECY’S DEEPER REALITY?
Prophecy is the virtual reality of the church, transporting believers into the Time of Trouble and New Earth before they happen, creating deep conviction that makes the coming judgment feel imminent. “But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up” (2 Peter 3:10, KJV). “Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?” (2 Peter 3:12, KJV). “Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness” (2 Peter 3:13, KJV). “For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind” (Isaiah 65:17, KJV). A passage from The Great Controversy reminds us, “The time of trouble is just before us” (The Great Controversy, p. 624, 1911). Through inspired counsel we are told, “The prophecies which were fulfilled in the outpouring of the former rain at the opening of the gospel are again to be fulfilled in the latter rain at its close” (The Great Controversy, p. 611, 1911). Sr. White explained, “The final movements will be rapid ones” (Last Day Events, p. 11, 1992). She stated, “The end will come more quickly than men expect” (The Great Controversy, p. 631, 1911). She declared, “Character building is the most important work ever entrusted to human beings” (Education, p. 225, 1903). This profound work uses humble means, so what unlikely influences should guide our efforts?
WHAT UNLIKELY INFLUENCES GUIDE?
We are guided by humble, unlikely instruments—the Samaritan woman, a tract, a loaf of bread—simple means that bypass worldly noise and touch the heart, chosen by God to confound the wise. “But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty” (1 Corinthians 1:27, KJV). “Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength because of thine enemies, that thou mightest still the enemy and the avenger” (Psalm 8:2, KJV). “And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are” (1 Corinthians 1:28, KJV). “For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called” (1 Corinthians 1:26, KJV). “That no flesh should glory in his presence” (1 Corinthians 1:29, KJV). “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD” (Isaiah 55:8, KJV). Sr. White highlighted, “God will use ways and means by which it will be seen that He is taking the reins in His own hands” (Testimonies to Ministers and Gospel Workers, p. 300, 1923). The inspired pen highlights, “The Lord often works where we least expect Him; He surprises us by revealing His power through instruments of His own choice” (The Ministry of Healing, p. 149, 1905). 225, 1903). As we work, we watch for the climax, so what final event signals the harvest’s commencement?
WHAT SIGNALS THE FINAL HARVEST?
The final harvest is signaled by the angel’s cry and the thrusting of the sharp sickle, the climax of earth’s history when the grapes of wrath are fully ripe and the clusters are gathered. “And another angel came out of the temple which is in heaven, he also having a sharp sickle” (Revelation 14:17, KJV). “Thrust in thy sharp sickle, and gather the clusters of the vine of the earth; for her grapes are fully ripe” (Revelation 14:18, KJV). “And another angel came out of the temple, crying with a loud voice to him that sat on the cloud, Thrust in thy sickle, and reap: for the time is come for thee to reap; for the harvest of the earth is ripe” (Revelation 14:15, KJV). “Put ye in the sickle, for the harvest is ripe: come, get you down; for the press is full, the fats overflow; for their wickedness is great” (Joel 3:13, KJV). “For the harvest of the earth is ripe” (Revelation 14:15, KJV). “Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn” (Matthew 13:30, KJV). A prophetic voice announced, “The end will come more quickly than men expect” (The Great Controversy, p. 631, 1911). In Last Day Events we read, “The final movements will be rapid ones” (Last Day Events, p. 11, 1992). Sr. White explained, “The harvest is the end of the world” (Christ’s Object Lessons, p. 70, 1900). She stated, “The time of test is just upon us” (The Great Controversy, p. 615, 1911). She declared, “Character building is the most important work ever entrusted to human beings” (Education, p. 225, 1903). This harvest involves a dual ripening, so what ripens both the tares and the wheat together?
WHAT RIPENS TARES AND WHEAT?
The same Loud Cry sun ripens both tares and wheat; it hardens the clay of the wicked in their confederacies while melting the wax of the righteous, both maturing until the harvest separation. “The enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels” (Matthew 13:39, KJV). “As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire; so shall it be in the end of this world” (Matthew 13:40, KJV). “The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity” (Matthew 13:41, KJV). Sr. White interpreted, “The tares and the wheat are to grow together until the harvest; and the harvest is the end of probationary time” (Christ’s Object Lessons, p. 71, 1900). The inspired pen interprets, “There are true Christians and false Christians” (Christ’s Object Lessons, p. 72, 1900). She explained, “The final movements will be rapid ones” (Last Day Events, p. 11, 1992). She stated, “The end will come more quickly than men expect” (The Great Controversy, p. 631, 1911). She declared, “Character building is the most important work ever entrusted to human beings” (Education, p. 225, 1903). Ripening precedes reaping, so what specific event heralds the harvest’s beginning?
WHAT HERALDS THE HARVEST’S BEGINNING?
The harvest is heralded by a loud voice revealing God’s glory, a light that exposes Babylon and requires our faces to be shining with consecration, reflecting the Sun of Righteousness. “Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the LORD is risen upon thee” (Isaiah 60:1, KJV). “For, behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people: but the LORD shall arise upon thee, and his glory shall be seen upon thee” (Isaiah 60:2, KJV). “And the Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising” (Isaiah 60:3, KJV). “The sun shall be no more thy light by day; neither for brightness shall the moon give light unto thee: but the LORD shall be unto thee an everlasting light, and thy God thy glory” (Isaiah 60:19, KJV). “Thy sun shall no more go down; neither shall thy moon withdraw itself: for the LORD shall be thine everlasting light, and the days of thy mourning shall be ended” (Isaiah 60:20, KJV). “But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings; and ye shall go forth, and grow up as calves of the stall” (Malachi 4:2, KJV). A passage from Early Writings reminds us, “I saw angels hurrying to and fro in heaven, descending to the earth, and again ascending to heaven, preparing for the fulfillment of some important event” (Early Writings, p. 277, 1882). Through inspired counsel we are told, “Servants of God, with their faces lighted up and shining with holy consecration, will hasten from place to place to proclaim the message from heaven” (The Great Controversy, p. 612, 1911). Sr. White explained, “The final movements will be rapid ones” (Last Day Events, p. 11, 1992). She stated, “The time of test is just upon us” (The Great Controversy, p. 615, 1911). She declared, “Character building is the most important work ever entrusted to human beings” (Education, p. 225, 1903). This heralding brings urgency, so what urgency does the doctrine of the shut door impart?
WHAT URGENCY FROM SHUT DOOR?
The shut door doctrine imparts extreme urgency; our medical, publishing, and preaching work is a race against the closing door of probation, for the time of grace will end suddenly and unexpectedly. “And the door was shut” (Matthew 25:10, KJV). “Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation” (2 Corinthians 6:2, KJV). “Today if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts” (Hebrews 3:7-8, KJV). “Boast not thyself of to morrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth” (Proverbs 27:1, KJV). “Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away” (James 4:14, KJV). “The night cometh, when no man can work” (John 9:4, KJV). Sr. White stressed, “The time of grace will close suddenly, unexpectedly” (The Great Controversy, p. 623, 1911). The inspired pen stresses, “Probation closes when the work of the gospel is completed” (Last Day Events, p. 227, 1992). She warned, “The end is near. We have not a moment to lose” (Last Day Events, p. 36, 1992). She stated, “The final movements will be rapid ones” (Last Day Events, p. 11, 1992). She declared, “Character building is the most important work ever entrusted to human beings” (Education, p. 225, 1903). After the rain comes silence, so what follows the final outpouring of the latter rain?
WHAT FOLLOWS THE LATTER RAIN?
After the latter rain stops, the harvest begins; after the harvest, silence falls—the human machinery stops, dissension ceases, and peace reigns in the kingdom, but now we are in the noisy, humid field. “They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain: for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea” (Isaiah 11:9, KJV). “The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them” (Isaiah 11:6, KJV). “And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away” (Revelation 21:4, KJV). “And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him” (Revelation 22:3, KJV). “And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God” (Revelation 21:3, KJV). “And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever” (Revelation 22:5, KJV). A prophetic voice envisioned, “In the city of God ‘there shall be no night’” (The Great Controversy, p. 676, 1911). In Patriarchs and Prophets we read, “Pain cannot exist in the atmosphere of heaven” (Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 478, 1890). 225, 1903).
HOW DO THESE CONCEPTS REFLECT GOD’S LOVE?
These concepts reflect God’s love as a patient husbandman waiting for precious fruit, providing the early and latter rain of His Spirit to nourish and ripen us for His presence. “The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy” (Psalm 103:8, KJV). “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8, KJV). “He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?” (Romans 8:32, KJV). “In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him” (1 John 4:9, KJV). “Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God” (1 John 3:1, KJV). “The LORD hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee” (Jeremiah 31:3, KJV). Ellen G. White wrote, “God is love” (Steps to Christ, p. 33, 1892). She explained, “The love of God is without a parallel” (Testimonies for the Church, vol. 5, p. 633, 1889). She declared, “The gift of Christ reveals the Father’s heart” (The Desire of Ages, p. 57, 1898). She stated, “It is through the gift of Christ that we receive every blessing” (Steps to Christ, p. 21, 1892). She affirmed, “The Lord is full of compassion, and gracious, long-suffering, and plenteous in mercy and truth” (Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 139, 1890).
My duties to God are to seek first His kingdom and righteousness, to present my body a living sacrifice, to grow in grace, and to watch and pray for Christ’s return with a purified heart. “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you” (Matthew 6:33, KJV). “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service” (Romans 12:1, KJV). “But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 3:18, KJV). “Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak” (Matthew 26:41, KJV). “Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me” (Psalm 51:10, KJV). “And what I say unto you I say unto all, Watch” (Mark 13:37, KJV). Through inspired counsel we are told, “The work of preparation is an individual work” (Counsels on Health, p. 425, 1923). Sr. White stated, “Character building is the most important work ever entrusted to human beings” (Education, p. 225, 1903). She explained, “The formation of character is the work of a lifetime” (Counsels to Parents, Teachers, and Students, p. 61, 1913). She urged, “We should pray as earnestly for the descent of the Holy Spirit as the disciples prayed on the day of Pentecost” (The Acts of the Apostles, p. 37, 1911). She declared, “The seal of the living God will be placed upon those only who bear a likeness to Christ in character” (Review and Herald, May 21, 1895).
My duties to my neighbor are to love them through Christlike medical missionary service, bearing burdens, visiting the afflicted, and offering the cup of cold water in the name of a disciple. “Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself” (Leviticus 19:18, KJV). “By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another” (John 13:35, KJV). “Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ” (Galatians 6:2, KJV). “Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world” (James 1:27, KJV). “And whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward” (Matthew 10:42, KJV). “Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others” (Philippians 2:4, KJV). 144, 1905). She declared, “Character building is the most important work ever entrusted to human beings” (Education, p. 225, 1903).
“BEHOLD, THE HUSBANDMAN WAITETH FOR THE PRECIOUS FRUIT OF THE EARTH, AND HATH LONG PATIENCE FOR IT, UNTIL HE RECEIVE THE EARLY AND LATTER RAIN.” (JAMES 5:7, KJV)
SELF-REFLECTION
How can I deepen my understanding of the latter rain and harvest in my daily devotions, letting these truths transform my daily choices and spiritual growth?
How can we present the concepts of the former and latter rain in ways that resonate with both long-time members and newcomers, maintaining biblical fidelity while making them applicable to everyday life?
What prevalent misunderstandings about the role of medical missionary work and health reform exist in our circles, and how can I use Scripture and Sr. White’s writings to clarify them compassionately?
How can we as a community embody the preparation for the harvest through practical acts of unity, health reform, and outreach, reflecting the urgency of the loud cry in our collective witness?
