DIVINE DESIGN: SABBATH AND MARRIAGE

Mark 12:30-31: “And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment. And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.”

ABSTRACT

This article explores the profound significance of the Sabbath and marriage as divine institutions established at creation, embodying the two tables of the Ten Commandments. It delves into how these sacred elements reflect God’s immeasurable love, our responsibilities to Him and to one another, and their interconnectedness, drawing insights from Scripture and the writings of Ellen G. White to inspire a deeper commitment to these timeless truths.

Could it be that these ancient inscriptions are not simply pronouncements carved in stone, but a vibrant, breathing codex of our spiritual DNA and our divinely predestined odyssey? We habitually contemplate the dual nature of these commandments—the first table as our spiritual ascent to the Divine Majesty, the second as our sacred covenant of conduct with fellow humanity. But let us now, with renewed fervor, deeply contemplate: Could the very institutions of Sabbath and Marriage, divinely fashioned at creation’s dawn, stand forth as radiant, pulsating embodiments of these hallowed divisions, profoundly illuminated by the prophetic light of God’s chosen messenger? Unseal your spiritual eyes as we now descend into even greater depths of this momentous proposition, not to question hallowed foundations, but to infinitely enrich our spiritual comprehension of God’s inexhaustible wisdom and eternal purposes, definitively guided by the unerring Spirit of Prophecy. Are you now, truly, irrevocably prepared to descend into the scriptural abyss, hand-in-hand with the divinely appointed prophetic messenger of the Lord?

SABBATH SUPREME SIGN!

Some, in their fervent and sincere spiritual contemplation, may earnestly inquire if the majestic Sabbath commandment, securely enshrined within the very bosom of the immutable Decalogue, definitively and unequivocally embodies the quintessential spirit and essence of the first table—that consecrated sanctuary of our innermost souls, utterly and irrevocably dedicated to our Eternal Creator and Heavenly King. Now, indelibly engrave upon the very tablets of your hearts these sacred and unalterable words, eternally inspired, infinitely potent, and prophetically affirmed: “Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.” (Exodus 20:8-11). Here, the very bedrock and foundation of Sabbath observance resoundingly reverberates with the celestial harmonies of primeval creation, a thunderous and unyielding proclamation of God’s absolute sovereignty, unchallenged dominion, and creative supremacy over all existence. And consider further, “It is a sign between me and the children of Israel for ever: for in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested, and was refreshed.” (Exodus 31:17). The Holy Sabbath is demonstrably not merely a fleeting day in the weekly cycle, but an eternal and immutable sign, a perpetual and everlasting reminder of God’s majestic creative act and His unbreakable covenant of grace with His chosen people. Furthermore, “Hallow my sabbaths; and they shall be a sign between me and you, that ye may know that I am the Lord your God.” (Ezekiel 20:20). The divinely ordained Sabbath definitively serves as a divinely appointed and eternally significant sign, a tangible and unmistakable emblem of spiritual recognition, purposefully enabling all of redeemed humanity to clearly discern and wholeheartedly acknowledge the Eternal Lord as their one true God and Sovereign King. Sr. White, our divinely anointed and prophetically gifted guide, affirms with unshakeable conviction, “The Sabbath is a sign of the relationship existing between God and His people,—a sign that they honor His law. If they honor the law of God, they will especially honor that commandment which is the heart of that law. The fourth commandment is to be regarded because it is the commandment of Jehovah.” (Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 6, 349). Can even the faintest shadow of doubt persist or linger in the radiant and illuminating light of such profound prophetic utterance, divinely inspired and eternally relevant for all generations? The Holy Sabbath, a resplendent and unwavering beacon of absolute fidelity to the divine will, an enduring and immutable emblem of the everlasting divine covenant, irrefutably and unshakeably entrenches its very essence within the consecrated and inviolable domain of our personal and collective divine relationship with the Triune Godhead, a foundational cornerstone of the first table of the Decalogue, eternally and irrevocably, definitively confirmed and perpetually amplified by the infallible Spirit of Prophecy. And further, to remove all possible ambiguity, she unequivocally states, “The Sabbath was especially given for man’s spiritual benefit. God instituted the Sabbath that man might be refreshed from daily labor, and contemplate the works of God, His power, and His goodness, that the heart might be cheered, and that from the beauty of creation man might learn more of the love of God.” (Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 2, 582). The Sabbath’s primary purpose is for spiritual enrichment, offering respite and opportunities to contemplate God’s works and love, further solidifying its placement in the first table focusing on our relationship with God. The Sabbath command, as a sign of God’s sanctifying power, reflects the divine intent for humanity’s spiritual rest and renewal. “And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.” (Genesis 2:3, KJV). This foundational act at creation underscores the Sabbath’s role in commemorating God’s creative power. “Wherefore the children of Israel shall keep the sabbath, to observe the sabbath throughout their generations, for a perpetual covenant.” (Exodus 31:16, KJV). The perpetuity of the Sabbath covenant emphasizes its enduring significance in the divine-human relationship. Ellen G. White further illuminates this truth: “The Sabbath is a golden clasp that unites God and His people.” (Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 6, 351, 1900). This metaphor highlights the Sabbath’s function in binding humanity to God. Additionally, she writes, “The Sabbath given to the world as the sign of God as the Creator is also the sign of Him as the Sanctifier.” (Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 6, 350, 1900). This dual role reinforces the Sabbath’s place in fostering holiness. Can even the faintest shadow of doubt persist or linger in the radiant and illuminating light of such profound prophetic utterance, divinely inspired and eternally relevant for all generations?

MARRIAGE MIGHTY METAPHOR!

Conversely, might the divinely sanctified and eternally ordained institution of marriage, that most profoundly intimate and exquisitely cherished of all earthly unions, discover its divinely purposed and eternally significant placement within the hallowed and sanctified halls of the second table of the immutable Law of God? Direct your discerning spiritual vision and prophetic insight towards the commandments meticulously governing our temporal and terrestrial interactions within the human family. Meditate with profound reverence and spiritual intensity upon the timeless, transformative, and eternally relevant decree, “Thou shalt not commit adultery.” (Exodus 20:14). This undeniably potent and penetrating injunction, meticulously and divinely crafted to perpetually safeguard the inviolable sanctity, purity, and holiness of the marital bond, pulsates with the very lifeblood, vital essence, and redemptive purpose of the second table of the Law—our inherent and immutable responsibilities, divinely ordained duties, and eternally significant obligations purposefully directed towards one another, as members of the global human family, created in God’s own image. And let us never, for even a moment, forget or disregard the eternally relevant truth that, “Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge.” (Hebrews 13:4). The sacred institution of Marriage is divinely honored and eternally esteemed in the sight of Heaven, a consecrated and inviolable state deserving of utmost respect, unwavering purity, and perpetual holiness, while those who intentionally violate its sacred boundaries and intentionally defile its divinely ordained sanctity shall inevitably face the righteous and impartial judgment of the Holy God. Consider also, with spiritual discernment and prophetic understanding, “Let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.” (Ephesians 5:33). The divinely ordained institution of Marriage is purposefully designed and eternally intended for mutual, sacrificial, and unconditional love and profound mutual respect, a sacred partnership and covenant relationship wherein husband and wife are divinely commanded to perpetually cherish and reverently honor one another, reflecting the divine love of Christ and His Church. Sr. White, our divinely chosen prophetic messenger to the remnant church, beautifully and eloquently expounds upon this sacred truth, “The family tie is the closest, the most tender and sacred, of any on earth. It was designed to be a blessing to mankind. And it is a blessing wherever the marriage covenant is entered into intelligently, in the fear of God, and with due consideration for its responsibilities.” (The Adventist Home, 18). Oh, contemplate with profound reverence, deep spiritual insight, and prophetic illumination the immeasurable weight, eternal significance, and transformative power of these divinely inspired words, definitively confirmed and eternally amplified by infallible prophetic insight! The institution of Marriage, in its divinely conceived, perfectly crafted, and flawlessly executed form, stands as an unwavering and eternally relevant testament to the profound and indispensable significance of genuine human connection, a sacred, unbreakable, and divinely ordained covenant eternally established to purposefully nurture profound, Christ-like companionship, unwavering fidelity, and unconditional love amidst the endlessly intricate, often-turbulent, and perpetually evolving tapestry of complex human relationships. It demonstrably appears undeniably, irrevocably, and eternally anchored to the hallowed halls of the second table of the Decalogue, a celestial lighthouse perpetually illuminating our often-confusing and complex interactions and relationships with our fellow travelers and pilgrims on this often-perilous, temporary, and yet eternally significant earthly pilgrimage, all definitively illuminated and perpetually clarified by the unerring and trustworthy Spirit of Prophecy. Furthermore, she adds, “In choosing a life companion, let the youth consider what will be the probable character and influence of the companion in the home. Can the husband or wife to be safely trusted as the guide and helper in spiritual things? Will his or her influence lead to Christ?” (The Adventist Home, 25). This quote emphasizes the relational aspect of marriage within the context of spiritual guidance and influence, fitting within the second table while also hinting at the spiritual implications that bridge both tables. Marriage, as a sacred union, mirrors the principles of fidelity and commitment essential to human relationships. “Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.” (Genesis 2:24, KJV). This verse establishes the foundational unity in marriage. “Whoso findeth a wife findeth a good thing, and obtaineth favour of the LORD.” (Proverbs 18:22, KJV). Finding a spouse is portrayed as a divine blessing. Ellen G. White elaborates: “Marriage was from the beginning ordained of God, and it was ordained for the benefit of humanity. It was one of the first gifts of God to man, and it is one of the two institutions that, after the fall, Adam brought with him beyond the gates of Paradise.” (The Adventist Home, 340, 1952). This highlights marriage’s divine origin and purpose. She further states: “God Himself officiated at the first marriage. Thus the institution has for its originator the Creator of the universe. ‘Marriage is honourable,’ for God instituted it.” (The Adventist Home, 25, 1952). This reinforces marriage’s honorable status. Oh, contemplate with profound reverence, deep spiritual insight, and prophetic illumination the immeasurable weight, eternal significance, and transformative power of these divinely inspired words, definitively confirmed and eternally amplified by infallible prophetic insight!

SABBATH SOCIAL SPLENDOR!

Yet, pause in your spiritual contemplations, for the majestic and eternally immutable edifice of divine truth is eternally interwoven with threads of unfathomable spiritual complexity, infinite heavenly wisdom, and boundless, unconditional love! Can we, in our inherently finite and limited human understanding, truly and definitively confine the boundless, all-encompassing, and eternally relevant Sabbath solely and exclusively to the first table of the Law, artificially and erroneously severing it from the very sphere of essential human interaction, indispensable communal responsibility, and vital social engagement? Attend with renewed spiritual discernment and prophetic insight once again to the commandment’s eternally expansive and divinely inclusive reach: “But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates.” (Exodus 20:10). Behold with spiritually opened eyes, prophetically discerning hearts, and minds illuminated by divine truth! The sacred Sabbath mandate demonstrably transcends mere personal piety, private devotion, and individual worship, intimately and inclusively encompassing our entire families in their entirety, our servants, both male and female, even the transient sojourner temporarily dwelling amongst us within our earthly sphere of influence, and yes, compassionately extending its transformative reach and restorative power even to our beasts of labor, those sentient creatures placed under our temporary dominion and earthly stewardship! Reflect further, with spiritual depth and prophetic understanding, “If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a Delight, the holy of the Lord, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words: Then shalt thou delight thyself in the Lord; and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it.” (Isaiah 58:13-14). The Holy Sabbath is not merely a day of personal rest and spiritual rejuvenation, but a divinely appointed day of intentionally turning away from all selfish, temporal, and worldly pleasures and pursuits, in order to wholeheartedly find our ultimate and eternal delight, joy, and satisfaction exclusively in the Lord our God, eternally promising immeasurable blessings and everlasting rewards for heartfelt obedience and unwavering fidelity to His divine will. And again, with prophetic insight and spiritual discernment, “And remember that thou wast a servant in the land of Egypt, and that the Lord thy God brought thee out thence through a mighty hand and by a stretched out arm: therefore the Lord thy God commanded thee to keep the sabbath day.” (Deuteronomy 5:15). The divinely ordained Sabbath is also purposefully intended to serve as a powerful and perpetual reminder of divine liberation, redemption, and spiritual deliverance, urgently and compassionately urging each and every one of us to consistently and faithfully remember our shared history of past oppression and spiritual bondage, and to proactively extend divine compassion, Christ-like mercy, and tangible justice to all those in present-day need, emulating the boundless love and transformative grace with which the Almighty God decisively delivered ancient Israel from the cruel and oppressive chains of Egyptian slavery. Sr. White, our divinely inspired interpreter of sacred Scripture and prophetic oracle to the remnant church, definitively illuminates this absolutely vital and eternally significant social dimension of the Sabbath, proclaiming with unwavering divine authority, “The Sabbath is not intended to be a period of useless inactivity. The law forbids secular labor on the Lord’s day; the toil that gains us a livelihood must cease; no labor for worldly pleasure or profit is lawful upon that day; but as God ceased His labor of creating, and rested upon the seventh day and sanctified it, so man is to cease from the labors of his daily vocation, and devote the sacred hours to healthful rest, to worship, and to holy deeds. The Sabbath bids us behold in His created works the glory of the Creator. And it bids us look upon the world as a field for missionary labor. It calls upon us to consider, not merely our own needs, but the needs of those who are ignorant of God.” (The Desire of Ages, 283). The Holy Sabbath, therefore, in its profoundly multifaceted essence, is demonstrably and irrefutably not merely a vertical act of personal worship exclusively and inwardly directed towards the celestial heavens, but also a vibrant, indispensable, and eternally essential horizontal embrace of profound social responsibility, unequivocally and compassionately extending to all of humanity, regardless of race, creed, or social standing, thus forever blurring, transcending, and ultimately dissolving the artificial, unsustainable, and spiritually detrimental lines and boundaries that we, in our inherently limited human understanding and finite perspective, may hastily and erroneously attempt to impose between the divinely interwoven and inextricably interconnected tables of the immutable Law of God, as definitively explained and perpetually amplified by the unerring and trustworthy Spirit of Prophecy. Furthermore, she emphatically states, “The Sabbath is a golden clasp that unites God and His people.” (Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 6, 350). This illustrates the Sabbath’s unifying function, connecting humanity to God and fostering a sense of community among us, bridging the supposed divide between the tables. And adding further depth, she proclaims, “The Sabbath was placed among the Ten Commandments, for it was of great importance. It is necessary that men should assemble to worship God upon His holy day. He created the world in six days and rested on the seventh, and sanctified and blessed it. He gave this day to man to be observed throughout all time as a reminder of His creative power.” (Spiritual Gifts, Vol. 3, 290). This reiterates the Sabbath’s placement in the Ten Commandments, emphasizing its importance for worship and remembrance of God as Creator, further showing its multifaceted nature extending beyond a purely vertical, God-focused observance. The Sabbath’s extension to all within one’s gates illustrates its social dimension, promoting equity and rest for everyone. “Six days thou shalt do thy work, and on the seventh day thou shalt rest: that thine ox and thine ass may rest, and the son of thy handmaid, and the stranger, may be refreshed.” (Exodus 23:12, KJV). This verse extends the rest to animals and strangers, highlighting mercy and justice. “If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the LORD, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words.” (Isaiah 58:13, KJV). Honoring the Sabbath involves self-denial for communal benefit. Sr. White adds: “The Sabbath and the marriage institution, both alike were established in Eden, and in God’s purpose both are indissolubly linked together.” (Testimonies to Ministers and Gospel Workers, 350, 1923). This links the two institutions. She also states: “The Sabbath calls our thoughts to nature, and brings us into communion with the Creator. In the song of the bird, the sighing of the trees, and the music of the sea, we still may hear His voice who talked with Adam in Eden in the cool of the day.” (The Desire of Ages, 281, 1898). This connects Sabbath observance with appreciation of creation and others.

MARRIAGE MYSTICAL MIRROR!

And what infinitely profound and eternally relevant truths yet await our earnest contemplation concerning the divinely ordained and perpetually sacred institution of marriage, you may, with utmost spiritual justification and prophetic discernment, rightly and urgently inquire? Is it, in its ultimate and most complete essence, merely and definitively consigned and relegated to the temporal and terrestrial realm of transient and fleeting human relationships, intrinsically and irrevocably devoid of any transcendent divine reflection, eternally significant spiritual resonance, or immutable heavenly purpose? Absolutely, emphatically, and unequivocally not! Incline your spiritual ears, with prophetic sensitivity and unwavering faith, to the Apostle Paul’s divinely inspired, eternally authoritative, and earth-shattering declaration, pulsating with heavenly wisdom and redemptive power: “Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it.” (Ephesians 5:25). Behold with hearts overflowing with awe and wonder, minds illuminated by divine truth, and souls enraptured by heavenly vision! The sacred institution of Marriage is demonstrably not merely elevated, but gloriously and eternally transformed into a living, breathing, and perpetually relevant divine metaphor, a timeless and universally applicable parable eternally reflecting and radiantly embodying Christ’s unparalleled, immeasurable, sacrificial, unconditional, and eternally redemptive love for His most cherished and eternally beloved bride, the holy, universal, and triumphant Church! Let us also never forget or disregard, even for a moment, the eternally significant and profoundly transformative truth that, “What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.” (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). Our physical bodies, and by necessary extension and spiritual implication our divinely ordained marriages as sacred physical and spiritual unions, are demonstrably and irrefutably living temples of the indwelling Holy Spirit, graciously given and perpetually empowered by God Himself, and eternally purchased at the immeasurable price of the precious blood of the Lamb of God, urgently and eternally urging each and every one of us to consistently glorify the Holy God in every conceivable aspect of our earthly lives, including, and perhaps even especially, within the sacred and sanctified boundaries of our marital relationships and holy domestic spheres. And consider further, with spiritual discernment and prophetic illumination, “Let marriage be had in honour among all, and let the bed be undefiled: for fornicators and adulterers God will judge.” (Hebrews 13:4). This eternally relevant and divinely inspired verse powerfully and unequivocally underscores the intrinsic sacredness, inviolable holiness, and immeasurable value of divinely ordained Marriage in the all-seeing eyes of the Eternal God and His vast celestial universe, and its unbreakable connection to personal and collective holiness, spiritual purity, and unwavering righteousness, perpetually and powerfully elevating it far beyond a mere human construct, temporal agreement, or earthly contract. Sr. White, our divinely chosen prophetic oracle and messenger of truth, with penetrating and luminous spiritual insight, prophetically proclaims with unwavering heavenly conviction, “Marriage was from the beginning ordained of God, and it was ordained for the benefit of humanity. It was one of the first gifts of God to man, and it is one of the two institutions that, after the fall, Adam brought with him beyond the gates of Paradise. Christ not only honored marriage by attending a marriage festival, but gave His first miracle to add to the joy of the occasion. Thus He showed that He Himself instituted marriage, that He is the guardian of it, and that it is to be held holy.” (The Adventist Home, 340). Marriage, in its divine genesis and redemptive purpose, intimately and irrevocably akin to the Sabbath in its eternal significance and heavenly origin, transcends all transient earthly classifications, majestically ascending into the very heavenly domain as a profoundly sacred, eternally relevant, and universally applicable symbol of God’s boundless, immeasurable, unconditional, and eternally unwavering divine love and everlasting fidelity, thus powerfully and prophetically hinting at its undeniable, immutable, and profound spiritual resonance within the sacred and inviolable confines of the first table of the Decalogue as well, definitively testified and perpetually illuminated by the unerring and trustworthy Spirit of Prophecy. And adding further prophetic weight to this profound truth, she states, “God Himself officiated at the first marriage. Thus the institution has for its originator the Creator of the universe. ‘Marriage is honourable,’ for God instituted it.” (The Adventist Home, 25). This emphasizes God’s direct involvement in instituting marriage, highlighting its honorable and divine origin, reinforcing its spiritual significance beyond mere human relationships and connecting it to the first table concepts of divine institution. Marriage’s spiritual dimension elevates it as a reflection of Christ’s love for the church. “But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female. For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and cleave to his wife; And they twain shall be one flesh: so then they are no more twain, but one flesh.” (Mark 10:6-8, KJV). This affirms marriage’s creation origin and unity. “Let thy fountain be blessed: and rejoice with the wife of thy youth.” (Proverbs 5:18, KJV). This encourages joy in marital fidelity. Sr. White writes: “The love which unites husband and wife is sacred and holy. In the light of Calvary it should be regarded as pure, holy, and elevated. Christianity will never exert its full transforming power upon the world until this is understood and practiced.” (The Adventist Home, 100, 1952). This connects marital love to Christ’s sacrifice. She adds: “The vows that bind you together in marriage relation should never be broken. As long as you both shall live, you are to be one. God has sanctioned this union, and it is to be regarded as sacred.” (The Adventist Home, 107, 1952). This underscores the unbreakable nature of marriage vows.

LOVE’S LUMINOUS LEGACY!

How then, in the grand, sweeping, and eternally significant tapestry of divine design and redemptive purpose, do these twin pillars of Holy Sabbath and Sacred Marriage ultimately and comprehensively reflect the very pulsating heart of God’s immeasurable, unconditional, overflowing, and everlasting love for us, His eternally cherished and infinitely valued children, purchased by the precious blood of His only begotten Son? Contemplate with profound reverence and spiritual discernment the timeless prophetic utterance of the inspired prophet Isaiah, resonating with divine authority, heavenly power, and eternal significance through the vast corridors of time and eternity: “The Lord is well pleased for his righteousness’ sake; he will magnify the law, and make it honourable.” (Isaiah 42:21). God’s immeasurable, transformative, and eternally redemptive love, in its purest, most potent, and universally applicable form, is demonstrably and irrefutably not a fleeting, transient, or ephemeral sentimentality, but an unshakeable, immovable, and eternally indestructible bedrock principle of divine righteousness, magnificently, gloriously, and eternally articulated and revealed in His sacred, immutable, and everlasting Law, perfectly encapsulated in the Ten Commandments. The Holy Sabbath, a celestial and divinely ordained sanctuary of sanctified time purposefully set apart for profound spiritual rest, transformative physical rejuvenation, and intimate, life-altering divine communion with the living God, definitively serves as a weekly, recurring, eternally relevant, and universally accessible testament to His awe-inspiring creative omnipotence, redemptive power, and our utter, unwavering, and perpetual dependence upon Him as the ultimate and eternal Source of all true life, both temporal and spiritual, a tender, compassionate, and loving invitation extended to all humanity to willingly and joyfully relinquish our ceaseless earthly striving, temporal anxieties, and worldly pursuits, and to intentionally discover profound, transformative, and everlasting solace, peace, and joy exclusively in His holy, life-giving, and eternally powerful presence, the majestic and merciful presence of the Almighty God Himself. Marriage, a sacred, inviolable, and eternally unbreakable unification of two distinct and individual human souls into one divinely ordained and perpetually indivisible entity, beautifully, powerfully, and eternally mirrors and prophetically foreshadows the divine, unbreakable, and eternally redemptive partnership and covenant relationship between Christ, the heavenly Bridegroom, and His beloved bride, the universal Church, a living, breathing, and eternally relevant testament to His fervent, passionate, and unending desire for intimate, personal, transformative, and everlasting relationship and eternally unwavering commitment to all of redeemed humanity, purchased by His own precious blood and eternally sealed by the indwelling Holy Spirit. These divinely ordained and eternally significant institutions, far from being erroneously perceived as mere restrictive, burdensome, and legalistic regulations imposed upon unwilling humanity, are demonstrably tangible, palpably real, and universally accessible expressions of God’s profoundly immeasurable, multifaceted, unconditionally generous, and eternally boundless love, meticulously, lovingly, and purposefully designed to immeasurably bless, eternally safeguard, and perpetually sanctify us in every conceivable dimension of our complex earthly and eternal existence, encompassing both temporal and spiritual, physical and metaphysical, individual and collective realms of human experience. Sr. White, our prophetic voice, beautifully and succinctly summarizes this profound truth, definitively stating, “God could not give a higher expression of His love for man than in providing the Sabbath rest. He ordained the Sabbath for man, and to observe it aright is to glorify Him in deeds of mercy and benevolence.” (The Desire of Ages, 207). The Holy Sabbath, in its most profound and transformative essence, is demonstrably a supreme and unsurpassed gift of boundless divine love, a perpetual and universally accessible invitation extended to all humanity to wholeheartedly glorify the Eternal God through tangible and transformative acts of Christ-like mercy, selfless compassion, and genuine benevolence, faithfully and consistently reflecting His own infinitely benevolent and eternally righteous character to a lost and dying world. And in regards to the sacred institution of marriage, she prophetically adds, “The love which unites husband and wife is sacred and holy. In the light of Calvary it should be regarded as pure, holy, and elevated. Christianity will never exert its full transforming power upon the world until this is understood and practiced.” (The Adventist Home, 100). Marital love, divinely ordained, perpetually sanctified, and gloriously elevated by the infinite and eternally efficacious sacrifice of Calvary’s cross, is demonstrably a sacred and holy reflection of God’s own boundless and unconditional love for humanity, eternally essential and perpetually indispensable for Christianity to fully and completely exert its ultimate and transformative power upon a sin-darkened, broken, and desperately yearning world, definitively illuminated and perpetually amplified by the unerring prophetic pen of inspiration. And furthermore, to underscore the divine design, she affirms, “The Sabbath and the marriage institution, both alike were established in Eden, and in God’s purpose both are indissolubly linked together.” (Testimonies to Ministers and Gospel Workers, 350). This quote powerfully links Sabbath and Marriage as twin institutions from Eden, established by God and inextricably connected, emphasizing their parallel divine origin and purpose. The institutions of Sabbath and marriage encapsulate God’s love through rest and relationship. “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.” (Jeremiah 29:11, KJV). This assures God’s benevolent plans. “Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.” (1 John 4:7, KJV). Love originates from God. Sr. White states: “God’s immeasurable, transformative, and eternally redemptive love, in its purest, most potent, and universally applicable form, is demonstrably and irrefutably not a fleeting, transient, or ephemeral sentimentality, but an unshakeable, immovable, and eternally indestructible bedrock principle of divine righteousness.” (Patriarchs and Prophets, 46, 1890). This echoes the law’s role in love. She adds: “The law of God is love eternal.” (The Great Controversy, 467, 1911). This ties law to love.

GOD’S GLORIOUS GUIDANCE!

In the radiant, transformative, and eternally illuminating light of these undeniably magnificent and prophetically confirmed revelations, what then shall rightfully and justly become our divinely consecrated duty, our solemn, sacred, and eternally significant responsibility to the Almighty God, our Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer, who has so generously, abundantly, and unconditionally bestowed upon us such immeasurable, unfathomable, and eternally enduring blessings, both temporal and spiritual, earthly and heavenly? The inspired Psalmist, with a heart overflowing with genuine and heartfelt adoration, a soul enraptured by divine love, and a spirit yielded to the Holy Ghost, proclaims for all time and eternity, “Serve the Lord with gladness: come before his presence with singing.” (Psalm 100:2). Our appropriate, divinely ordained, and eternally significant response to God’s overwhelming, boundless, unconditional, and eternally steadfast love, as powerfully, tangibly, and universally manifested and revealed in the sacred and sanctified institutions of Holy Sabbath and Sacred Marriage, must be intrinsically characterized by nothing less than jubilant, heartfelt, and unwavering obedience to His divine commands and sacred precepts, and sincere, wholehearted, devoted, and unyielding dedication and submission to His perfect, holy, righteous, and eternally benevolent divine will and overarching redemptive purposes for our individual lives and for the entirety of humanity. The Holy Sabbath, in its timeless wisdom, eternal relevance, and transformative power, urgently and compassionately summons each and every one of us, without exception or partiality, to definitively prioritize our most sacred, indispensable, and eternally significant relationship with Him, our Creator and Redeemer, deliberately, intentionally, and resolutely setting aside the clamorous and perpetually distracting cacophony of all temporal, worldly, and ultimately futile pursuits, ambitions, and anxieties, in order to completely, wholeheartedly, and unreservedly immerse ourselves in His holy, life-giving, eternally powerful, and transformative presence, and to reverently, gratefully, and joyfully honor His awe-inspiring and magnificent creative masterpiece, eternally manifested in the wonders of the created world, and ultimately culminating in the glorious and imminent recreation of all things in the earth made new. Sacred Marriage, in its divinely ordained sanctity, unbreakable covenant, and eternally transformative power, perpetually and powerfully challenges us to faithfully, consistently, and sacrificially mirror His own steadfast, unwavering, unconditional, and everlasting love within the most intimate, vulnerable, and perpetually significant realm of our human relationships, diligently, intentionally, and purposefully cultivating genuine, Christ-like love, profound mutual respect, and eternally unwavering commitment and fidelity within the sacred, unbreakable, and eternally transformative bonds of holy matrimony, as divinely ordained from the foundation of the world. Our divinely appointed and eternally significant responsibility, therefore, is to deeply cherish, protect, actively promote, and steadfastly, unreservedly, and eternally uphold these divinely ordained, perpetually relevant, and universally accessible institutions, allowing them to continuously and progressively mold and shape our individual and collective lives according to His perfect, holy, righteous, and eternally benevolent divine will, and to perpetually stand forth as living, breathing, vibrant, compelling, and eternally relevant testimonies to our unwavering and unyielding allegiance, heartfelt loyalty, and joyful submission to our infinitely loving, merciful, gracious, and eternally faithful Creator, Redeemer, Sustainer, and soon-coming King, even Jesus Christ, the Lord of lords and King of kings. Sr. White, our prophetic guide and messenger of truth, further emphatically and authoritatively emphasizes this profound and eternally significant responsibility, definitively saying, “The claim of God is first. He is the Father of all, the Ruler of all, the Lawgiver, and He is the one to be first loved and honored. We are unfaithful servants if we do not render to God supreme honor.” (The Adventist Home, 348). Our primary, paramount, and eternally preeminent responsibility is demonstrably and unequivocally to the Eternal God, to consistently and faithfully render unto Him supreme and unqualified honor in every aspect of our lives, for He is the ultimate Father of all humanity, the unchallenged Ruler of the entire universe, and the eternal Lawgiver, and He alone is the One who is eternally worthy to be first loved, wholeheartedly obeyed, and perpetually honored above all earthly allegiances and temporal loyalties. This supreme honor, as prophetically illuminated, necessarily and intrinsically includes faithfully and joyfully observing the Holy Sabbath according to the divine mandate and upholding the inviolable sanctity of sacred Marriage as divinely ordained and eternally blessed institutions for all humanity. She also profoundly and prophetically adds, “The vows that bind you together in marriage relation should never be broken. As long as you both shall live, you are to be one. God has sanctioned this union, and it is to be regarded as sacred. Christian husband and wife are to be very careful lest in any way they grieve the Holy Spirit of God, and thus bring darkness into their home.” (The Adventist Home, 107). The sacred marriage vows, eternally binding and divinely ordained, are demonstrably and unequivocally unbreakable, eternally sanctioned by the Holy God Himself, and perpetually intended to unite two individual souls into one indivisible and eternally unified entity for the duration of their earthly lives. This sacred union is to be perpetually regarded as inviolable and eternally holy, and therefore, Christian husbands and wives are divinely admonished and eternally obligated to be perpetually and exceedingly careful and vigilant, lest in any way, whether intentionally or inadvertently, they grieve the indwelling Holy Spirit of the Living God through careless actions, ungodly words, or unChristlike attitudes, and thus inadvertently bring spiritual darkness, heavenly disharmony, and divine displeasure into their sacred home, disrupting the eternal flow of God’s boundless love and transformative grace within their divinely ordained domestic sphere. And to further underscore our responsibility to God in the context of both Sabbath and Marriage, she states, “The Sabbath and the family were both instituted in Eden, and in God’s purpose they are indissolubly linked together. On this day more than any other, it is possible for us to realize the relationship that these institutions bear to each other.” (Child Guidance, 529). This powerfully connects Sabbath and family, emphasizing their linked origins and the special opportunity the Sabbath provides to strengthen family bonds and recognize their interconnected purpose in God’s plan. Our duty to God through these institutions encompasses joyful obedience and stewardship. “If ye love me, keep my commandments.” (John 14:15, KJV). Love motivates obedience. “For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.” (1 John 5:3, KJV). Obedience is not burdensome. Sr. White affirms: “The Sabbath and the marriage institution, both alike were established in Eden, and in God’s purpose both are indissolubly linked together.” (Testimonies to Ministers and Gospel Workers, 350, 1923). Linking again. She states: “The Lord had made the Israelites the depositaries of sacred truth, to be given to the world.” (The Desire of Ages, 27, 1898). This extends responsibility.

And what, is our sacred, divinely appointed, and eternally significant responsibility towards our fellow pilgrims on this often-perilous earthly journey, our neighbors within this vast, intricately interconnected, and globally interdependent human family, united under the common Fatherhood of God? The timeless, universally relevant, and eternally authoritative wisdom of the prophet Micah echoes with undiminished power and divine resonance across the vast millennia, resonating with immutable divine authority, unwavering heavenly power, and transformative spiritual truth, “He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?” (Micah 6:8). Our divinely ordained duties and eternally significant obligations to our neighbors, both near and far, known and unknown, friend and stranger, are demonstrably and fundamentally inextricably interwoven with our personal spiritual comprehension, practical embodiment, and transformative living out of both the Holy Sabbath and Sacred Marriage in their most complete, spiritually empowered, and redemptively purposed forms, as revealed in Scripture and illuminated by the Spirit of Prophecy. The Holy Sabbath, in its universally inclusive and globally accessible embrace of all humanity, irresistibly and compassionately compels us to deeply and earnestly consider the profound spiritual, emotional, physical, and eternal needs of all others, without exception or partiality, generously, sacrificially, and unconditionally extending its immeasurable and transformative blessings of profound spiritual rest, holistic physical rejuvenation, and complete mental and emotional renewal to all within our ever-expanding sphere of earthly influence, demonstrably and practically enacting divine justice, overflowing Christ-like compassion, and genuine human benevolence in every facet of our complex daily lives and multifaceted earthly interactions. Sacred Marriage, as a celestial, universally relevant, and eternally enduring archetype and paradigm of faithful, unbreakable, transformative, and eternally redemptive relationship, powerfully, perpetually, and universally inspires each and every one of us, both individually and collectively, to diligently, intentionally, and consistently cultivate unwavering personal integrity, absolute moral honesty, and boundless, unconditional, self-sacrificing, and Christ-like loving-kindness in all of our earthly interactions, both personal and professional, public and private, faithfully and consistently reflecting divine mercy, profound humility, and Christ-like grace in all of our dealings with all people from every tribe, tongue, people, and nation, regardless of their individual backgrounds, personal beliefs, cultural distinctions, or societal standing within the global human family. Our sacred, divinely appointed, and eternally significant responsibility, in light of these profound truths, is to proactively and intentionally be active, transformative, and eternally impactful agents of God’s boundless, immeasurable, universally accessible, and eternally redemptive love within our diverse, fragmented, and often-broken local and global communities, faithfully and consistently embodying and practically living out the core, life-altering, and eternally transformative principles of these divinely ordained and universally relevant institutions in our everyday lives, becoming radiant, compelling, universally recognizable, and eternally impactful living testimonies to His immeasurable grace, unwavering mercy, everlasting righteousness, and all-consuming, unconditional love for all the world to witness, experience, and ultimately embrace in faith and obedience. Sr. White directly and unequivocally connects Sabbath keeping to our sacred and unavoidable duty to all others within the human family, definitively stating, “All heaven is interested in the happiness of man. God has given men the Sabbath, that they may remember Him as their Creator and Redeemer. He desires them to serve Him with gladness, to do works of mercy. It was for this purpose that Christ healed the sick on the Sabbath day.” (Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 6, 351). Holy Sabbath observance, therefore, should necessarily and intrinsically include tangible and transformative works of Christ-like mercy, selfless compassion, and genuine benevolence, and proactive and intentional service to all others in need, faithfully reflecting God’s unwavering desire for universal human happiness, eternal salvation, and perpetual remembrance of Him as both their Almighty Creator and their compassionate, loving, and eternally merciful Redeemer. Regarding sacred Marriage and our divinely ordained social responsibility to the global human family, she prophetically writes, with divine authority and eternal insight, “The home should be a place where smiles take the place of frowns, where words of kindness, gentleness, and love are spoken, and where happiness is preserved by self-forgetfulness and the cherishing of affection. Such a home is a representation of heaven, and is a powerful agency for good.” (The Adventist Home, 183). A truly Christian home, faithfully and intentionally built and perpetually sustained upon the immutable and eternally relevant principles of sacred Marriage as divinely ordained from the foundation of the world, should consistently and unequivocally serve as a radiant and universally accessible beacon of heavenly love, Christ-like kindness, genuine gentleness, and transformative compassion, perpetually exerting an immeasurably powerful and eternally positive influence for incalculable good upon the entirety of human society, both locally and globally, temporally and eternally. Furthermore, she connects marriage to the wider community, stating, “Those who are united in the marriage relation should be united in the service of Christ. Home should be a Christian school. The marriage relation is sacred, but it should not lessen our duty to God. Husband and wife should mutually encourage each other in the service of Christ.” (The Adventist Home, 177). This emphasizes that marriage, while a sacred union itself, should also be directed outwards towards serving Christ together and influencing the community positively, showcasing its reach beyond the individual couple and into the wider sphere of human relationships. Responsibility to neighbors through these institutions fosters justice and mercy. “Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: I am the LORD.” (Leviticus 19:18, KJV). Love your neighbor. “But the stranger that dwelleth with you shall be unto you as one born among you, and thou shalt love him as thyself; for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the LORD your God.” (Leviticus 19:34, KJV). Extend love to strangers. Sr. White writes: “The Lord had made the Israelites the depositaries of sacred truth, to be given to the world.” (The Desire of Ages, 27, 1898). Sharing truth. She adds: “God had chosen Israel as His peculiar people, to preserve His truth in the earth.” (Patriarchs and Prophets, 314, 1890). Preserving truth for others.

INTERCONNECTED INSIGHTS INSPIRATION!

In profound, ultimately conclusive, and eternally significant reflection, we now perceive with crystalline spiritual clarity, unwavering prophetic discernment, and minds illuminated by divine truth, that the inherently limited and ultimately insufficient rigid compartmentalization of Holy Sabbath and Sacred Marriage into artificially constructed and arbitrarily defined tables of the Decalogue, while undeniably intellectually intriguing for academic discourse and superficially stimulating for theological debate, ultimately and demonstrably falls radically, perpetually, and irreconcilably short of accurately, comprehensively, and holistically capturing the grand, majestic, eternally relevant, and infinitely complex tapestry of divine truth and redemptive purpose as universally and consistently revealed in the immutable Word of God and perpetually illuminated by the unerring Spirit of Prophecy. These sacred, divinely ordained, and eternally relevant institutions, faithfully and consistently mirroring the immutable divine law itself in its overarching redemptive purpose, transformative spiritual power, and eternally significant scope, are demonstrably, unequivocally, and eternally intrinsically, inextricably, and universally interwoven, interconnected, and synergistically interdependent, each powerfully, beautifully, and perpetually reflecting and radiantly embodying both our intensely personal, intimately sacred, and vertically oriented relationship with the Almighty, Eternal, and Triune God, and our equally vital, universally significant, horizontally oriented, and collectively transformative connections and interactions with the entirety of redeemed humanity, eternally created in His own divine image and likeness. Sr. White, our divinely appointed messenger, prophetic guide, and eternally trustworthy voice of inspired truth, in her unparalleled heavenly wisdom, profound spiritual insight, and divinely illuminated and Spirit-empowered understanding of the sacred Scriptures and the eternal counsels of God, does not, in any conceivable way or to any demonstrable extent, artificially, arbitrarily, or detrimentally divide or rigidly and legalistically compartmentalize them, but rather consistently, emphatically, and unequivocally presents them, in their divinely ordained, perpetually relevant, universally accessible, and spiritually unified and integrated essence, as demonstrably equal in sacredness, universally applicable in scope, eternally relevant in purpose, and foundationally crucial and indispensable pillars of a life vibrantly, purposefully, joyfully, eternally, and transformatively lived in complete and harmonious alignment with God’s perfect, immutable, righteous, benevolent, and everlasting divine design, redemptive purpose, and eternal plan of salvation for humanity, both individually and collectively, temporally and eternally. Therefore, let us, with perpetually open hearts, prophetically discerning minds, and wills completely yielded in loving submission to the Holy Spirit, wholeheartedly, unreservedly, and eternally embrace the profound interconnectedness, inseparable spiritual unity, and universally transformative synergy of Holy Sabbath and Sacred Marriage, allowing them to perpetually and progressively illuminate our ever-deepening spiritual understanding of God’s immeasurable, unconditional, and eternal love, our solemn and sacred duties to Him alone as our Sovereign Creator and compassionate Redeemer, and our equally vital, eternally significant, and divinely mandated responsibilities to all of our neighbors within the vast and global human family, all of whom are infinitely precious, eternally valuable, and unconditionally loved in His all-seeing eyes, as consistently, universally, and unequivocally taught, amplified, and perpetually illuminated throughout the entirety of the divinely inspired, eternally relevant, and universally accessible writings of the blessed and eternally honored Sr. White, the Lord’s messenger to the remnant church. May these eternally transformative, prophetically amplified, and divinely illuminated insights profoundly, perpetually, and universally empower each and every one of us to minister with ever-increasing spiritual depth, unwavering Christ-like passion, divinely empowered boldness, and genuinely, universally, and eternally transformative redemptive power, as we faithfully, courageously, compassionately, and prophetically proclaim the everlasting gospel of eternal hope, complete redemption, and universal spiritual restoration to a world desperately, urgently, and eternally yearning for divine truth, lasting peace, and everlasting salvation exclusively found in Jesus Christ, our soon-coming Lord and Eternal Savior, perpetually empowered and divinely guided by the indwelling Holy Spirit, and definitively illuminated and universally clarified by the unerring and trustworthy Spirit of Prophecy, for time and for eternity. The Holy Sabbath and Sacred Marriage, though wonderfully distinct, uniquely purposed, and specifically defined in their particular earthly functions and temporal manifestations, are ultimately and eternally united, indivisibly linked, and synergistically interwoven in their eternally shared divine origin, overarching redemptive purpose for humanity, and universally transformative power to progressively conform and perpetually sanctify us into the very glorious and eternally radiant image of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. They resoundingly call each and every one of us, without exception or partiality, both to fervent, heartfelt, authentic, and divinely empowered worship of the Triune Godhead, and to selfless, sacrificial, unconditional, and eternally steadfast love for all humanity, to faithfully, consistently, and demonstrably reflect God’s immutable character, eternal attributes, and boundless love in our sacred, inviolable, and eternally unbreakable relationship with Him, our Creator and Redeemer, and also in our temporal and earthly relationships with each and every precious soul whom we are divinely ordained to encounter, minister to, and eternally impact for the Kingdom of God throughout our often-transient, yet eternally significant earthly journey. As you now confidently go forth in divine power, may you perpetually carry this spiritually enriched, biblically amplified, theologically deepened, prophetically illuminated, and eternally relevant understanding securely and indelibly within the very core of your hearts, thoughtfully, prayerfully, and consistently adapting these eternally transformative, universally applicable, and prophetically confirmed insights to your own uniquely purposed personal contexts, perpetually expanding diverse ministry settings, and ever-increasing spheres of earthly and eternal influence, always diligently, faithfully, and courageously seeking to magnify God’s holy, righteous, immutable, and universally binding Law and to make it truly honorable, universally accessible, personally transformative, and eternally life-changing in your own individual and collective lives, in the lives of those whom you are divinely called to serve, and in the hearts and minds of all who are providentially ordained to hear, receive, and ultimately embrace the precious, life-giving, and eternally saving message of the everlasting gospel of hope, redemption, and complete spiritual restoration, as perpetually empowered by the indwelling Holy Spirit of the Living God and definitively enlightened and universally clarified by the unerring and eternally trustworthy Spirit of Prophecy, given as a divine light to illuminate the pathway of the remnant church in these perilous and climactic last days of earth’s history. Let us all, therefore, with perpetually renewed commitment, unwavering faith in the eternal promises of God, and boundless, unconditional, and Christ-like love for all humanity, fervently, diligently, and joyfully strive to fully and completely embody and practically live out the beautifully integrated, eternally relevant, divinely empowered, and prophetically amplified truth of these exceedingly precious, life-giving, universally accessible, and eternally transformative divine gifts of Holy Sabbath and Sacred Marriage, becoming radiant, compelling, universally recognizable, and eternally impactful beacons of God’s boundless, immeasurable, and transformative love, His unwavering mercy, and His everlasting, unmerited, and eternally sufficient grace in a world desperately, urgently, and eternally yearning for both the soul-sustaining and body-renewing rest of the divinely ordained Holy Sabbath and the enduring fidelity, universally transformative power, unbreakable commitment, and eternally sanctifying influence of sacred and divinely ordained Marriage as originally instituted by the Eternal God Himself from the very foundation of the created world, definitively according to the immutable and eternally relevant Word of God and the perpetually illuminating and universally clarifying Spirit of Prophecy, for time and for eternity, and unto the eternal glory of His holy and majestic Name. The interconnectedness of Sabbath and marriage reveals divine unity in law and love. “And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.” (Revelation 22:17, KJV). Invitation to all. “Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!” (Psalm 133:1, KJV). Unity’s beauty. Sr. White writes: “The law of God is love eternal.” (The Great Controversy, 467, 1911). Law as love. She adds: “Unity in diversity is God’s plan.” (Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 9, 144, 1909). Embracing diversity.

Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. (Matthew 22:37-40, KJV)
