TRUE FAITH: A CALL TO REVIVAL AND REFORMATION

2 Chronicles 7:14: “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land”

ABSTRACT

God’s love calls us to revival and reformation, urging us to deepen our faith and commitment. This article explores how spiritual awakening transforms our relationship with God and others, emphasizing repentance, prayer, and service as vital responses to His grace.

AWAKENING TO GOD’S CALL

Spiritual apathy often creeps into our lives unnoticed, eroding our passion for God’s presence. Revelation 3:19 states: “As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.” Sr. White expands on this truth: “Those who are reproved by the Spirit of God should not rise against the humble instrument. It is God, and not man, who has spoken to save them from ruin” (Testimonies for the Church Vol. 3, p. 257, 1873). My faith was once tied to social connections rather than a deep relationship with God, exposed when loneliness struck before my marriage. Without strong friendships, I felt no motivation to attend church, revealing a faith rooted in convenience. God’s Word further convicts us in Ezekiel 33:11: “Say unto them, As I live, saith the Lord God, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways; for why will ye die, O house of Israel?” (KJV). Similarly, Psalm 51:10 pleads: “Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me” (KJV). Sr. White urges: “There is need of a decided change in the church, a change in heart and practice” (Testimonies for the Church Vol. 5, p. 476, 1885). She also writes: “A revival and a reformation must take place under the ministration of the Holy Spirit” (Selected Messages, Book 1, p. 127, 1958). Through earnest prayer and Bible study, I found peace in rediscovering God’s character, transforming my faith from shallow routine to heartfelt devotion. How can we move from complacency to true spiritual fervor?

PRAYER: THE HEART OF REFORMATION

Reformation demands active engagement with God through prayer. Jeremiah 6:16 instructs: “Thus saith the Lord, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls” (KJV). Sr. White emphasizes: “A revival of true godliness among us is the greatest and most urgent of all our needs. To seek this should be our first work” (Selected Messages, Book 1, p. 121, 1958). During a season of prayer and fasting at my church, I saw attitudes soften and unity grow. God’s Word reinforces this in Isaiah 55:6: “Seek ye the Lord while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near” (KJV). James 5:16 adds: “The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much” (KJV). Sr. White describes: “Prayer is the key in the hand of faith to unlock heaven’s storehouse” (Steps to Christ, p. 94, 1892). She further notes: “There is no time or place in which it is inappropriate to offer up a petition to God” (Steps to Christ, p. 99, 1892). Prayer became the foundation of revival, aligning us with God’s will. What role does prayer play in preparing our hearts for God’s transforming work?

THE SHAKING: PURIFYING FAITH

True reformation brings a shaking, testing the depth of our faith. Joel 2:32 provides hope: “And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be delivered” (KJV). Sr. White describes: “I asked the meaning of the shaking I had seen, and was shown that it would be caused by the straight testimony called forth by the counsel of the True Witness to the Laodiceans” (Early Writings, p. 270, 1882). A friend’s departure from church challenged me to root my faith in Christ alone. Zephaniah 2:3 exhorts: “Seek ye the Lord, all ye meek of the earth, which have wrought his judgment; seek righteousness, seek meekness: it may be ye shall be hid in the day of the Lord’s anger” (KJV). Haggai 2:7 adds: “And I will shake all nations, and the desire of all nations shall come: and I will fill this house with glory, saith the Lord of hosts” (KJV). Sr. White warns: “Those who have not been in the habit of searching the Bible for themselves… will be shaken out” (Testimonies for the Church Vol. 5, p. 463, 1885). She also states: “The shaking will remove all that is not rooted in Christ” (Testimonies for the Church Vol. 1, p. 181, 1868). This shaking forces us to examine our faith’s foundation. Are we truly rooted in Christ, or do external circumstances sway us?

THE FAITHFUL REMNANT: GOD’S PROMISE

God preserves a faithful remnant through the shaking. Revelation 3:20 assures: “Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me” (KJV). Sr. White affirms: “Every jewel will be brought out and gathered… He will accomplish His work gloriously” (Early Writings, pp. 70, 261, 1882). Bible studies and small groups in my church revealed God’s work in uniting believers. Isaiah 10:20 declares: “And it shall come to pass in that day, that the remnant of Israel… shall stay upon the Lord, the Holy One of Israel, in truth” (KJV). Malachi 3:16 adds: “Then they that feared the Lord spake often one to another: and the Lord hearkened, and heard it” (KJV). Sr. White encourages: “God will have a people pure and true” (Testimonies for the Church Vol. 5, p. 80, 1882). She further writes: “The remnant that purify their souls by obeying the truth… will see God” (Testimonies for the Church Vol. 5, p. 214, 1885). God’s promise ensures a faithful remnant, reflecting His calling. How does God gather His faithful amidst spiritual challenges?

GROWING IN GRACE AND POWER

Reformation is a personal journey of spiritual growth. Revelation 18:4 calls: “Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins” (KJV). Sr. White urges: “Seek the Lord earnestly, put away your sins, and tarry in Jerusalem till ye be endowed with power from on high” (Testimonies to Ministers, p. 443, 1923). Studying Scripture and teaching others strengthened my faith. Psalm 119:11 states: “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee” (KJV). 2 Timothy 2:15 adds: “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed” (KJV). Sr. White notes: “Sanctification is not the work of a moment, but of a lifetime” (The Acts of the Apostles, p. 560, 1911). She also writes: “By beholding we become changed” (The Desire of Ages, p. 391, 1898). Personal growth reflects God’s transforming power. How does personal reformation shape our walk with God?

GOD’S LOVE IN REVIVAL

God’s love shines through His call to revival, revealing His desire to restore us. Revelation 3:19 declares: “As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent” (KJV). Sr. White affirms: “Christ’s love is earnest and tender. He rebukes, warns, and entreats, that the sinners may awaken from their lethargy and draw near to Him in repentance and faith” (Testimonies for the Church Vol. 4, p. 88, 1880). God’s discipline is redemptive, not punitive. John 3:17 states: “For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved” (KJV). 1 John 4:9 adds: “In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him” (KJV). Sr. White writes: “The love of God still yearns over the one who has chosen to separate from Him” (Steps to Christ, p. 21, 1892). She also notes: “God’s love is revealed in every act of mercy” (The Ministry of Healing, p. 162, 1905). God’s love invites us into fellowship with Him. What responsibilities do we bear in responding to God’s love?

Our responsibility to God demands wholehearted devotion and obedience. Revelation 3:19 emphasizes: “As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent” (KJV). Sr. White explains: “The Lord desires His servants to rise to the emergency, and accept the responsibility which God has placed upon them. As His faithful stewards, they are to guard the interests of His cause” (Testimonies for the Church Vol. 9, p. 27, 1909). Volunteering and sharing God’s love fulfilled this duty in my life. Deuteronomy 10:12 commands: “What doth the Lord thy God require of thee, but to fear the Lord thy God, to walk in all his ways, and to love him” (KJV). Joshua 24:15 adds: “Choose you this day whom ye will serve” (KJV). Sr. White states: “Obedience is the true sign of discipleship” (The Desire of Ages, p. 668, 1898). She further writes: “God calls for complete surrender” (Christ’s Object Lessons, p. 48, 1900). We owe God our allegiance, reflecting His character. How do we show our devotion through service to others?

We owe our neighbors love, service, and guidance toward truth. Philippians 2:4 instructs: “Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others” (KJV). Sr. White reinforces: “In Christ’s work, there were no cold, formal ceremonies. His work was characterized by simplicity and earnestness. The poor, the afflicted, the sorrowing, received from Him a personal interest, full of kindness and compassion” (The Ministry of Healing, p. 143, 1905). Volunteering and leading Bible studies deepened my faith and uplifted others. Galatians 6:2 commands: “Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ” (KJV). Matthew 5:16 adds: “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven” (KJV). Sr. White writes: “We are to be channels through which God’s love flows to others” (The Ministry of Healing, p. 156, 1905). She also notes: “The strongest argument in favor of the gospel is a loving and lovable Christian” (The Ministry of Healing, p. 470, 1905). We reflect God’s love through compassion and witness. How can we extend God’s love to those around us?

A FINAL CALL TO ACTION

Revival and reformation call us to repentance, prayer, and service, reflecting God’s love and power. 2 Chronicles 7:14 summarizes: “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land” (KJV). Sr. White urges: “Let the work of reformation begin at once. God calls for a spiritual revival and a spiritual reformation” (Selected Messages, Book 1, p. 128, 1958). Our faith must translate into action, serving God and others with zeal.
