ORIGIN OF EVIL: WILL MINDS FALL TO MESMER’S SPELL?

“The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” (Jeremiah 17:9, KJV).

ABSTRACT

This article traces the origins of Mesmerism from Franz Anton Mesmer’s 18th-century claims of discovering a universal fluid influencing health, through its sensational spread in Paris causing crises of convulsions, to its evolution in America linking to spiritualism and mind control, exposing its role as Satan’s tool to enslave the human will, contrasting this with God’s government of love that honors free choice, and urging the community to safeguard their mental citadel against such deceptions in the ongoing spiritual warfare, drawing on historical events, biblical truths, and inspired writings for vigilance, while integrating deeper insights from Ellen G. White on the mind as the soul’s battleground requiring guardianship through discipline, faith, and resistance to external controls.

HOW DID DECEPTION WHISPER IN?

It began not with a roar of cannons or the clash of steel, but with a whisper in a darkened room, the hum of a glass harmonica, and the frantic scratching of quill on parchment. In the twilight of the eighteenth century, as the Age of Reason reached its zenith, a shadow lengthened across the intellectual capitals of Europe—a shadow cast by a man who claimed to have discovered the secret engine of the universe. This was an era when the world was shaking off the dust of medieval superstition, yet in its hunger for empirical truth, it stumbled into a deception far more ancient and infinitely more dangerous. We stand today at the precipice of the very same delusion, rebranded and repackaged for a technological age, but the spirit remains unchanged. the history of Franz Anton Mesmer is not merely a dusty chapter of medical oddities; it is a tactical map of the enemy’s siege works against the citadel of the human soul. Satan transforms into an angel of light to deceive, as 2 Corinthians 11:14 declares, “And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light” (KJV), while Ephesians 6:11 urges us to arm against such wiles, “Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil” (KJV). A prophetic voice warns of these subtle influences, “Satan is continually seeking to influence human minds by his subtle arts. His is a mastermind, given of God, but prostituted with all its noble capabilities” (Mind, Character, and Personality, vol. 1, p. 18, 1977). Through inspired counsel we learn of adapted temptations, “The prince of darkness has a masterly mind, and he skillfully adapts his temptations to men of every variety of condition and culture” (The Story of Redemption, p. 399, 1947). The community must recognize this ancient snare in modern guise. What front holds the ultimate prize in the great controversy?

The Great Controversy, that struggle between Christ and Satan, is fought on many fronts—the sanctuary, the law, the Sabbath—but the ultimate prize, the contested ground where the flag of victory must be planted, is the human mind. “The mind is the citadel,” Ellen G. White declared, “the only medium through which heaven can communicate with man” (Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 1, p. 290, 1855). If the adversary cannot storm the walls with the brute force of persecution, he will seek to pick the lock with the subtle tools of psychology. He will seek to bypass the will, to dull the conscience, and to enthrone a human agent in the place of the Holy Spirit. This is the story of how he forged the master key—a key first known as Animal Magnetism, then Mesmerism, and now, in our modern parlance, the sciences of the mind. Scripture emphasizes guarding this citadel, as Proverbs 4:23 instructs, “Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life” (KJV), and Isaiah 26:3 promises, “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee” (KJV). In Mind, Character, and Personality we read of the mind’s control, “The mind controls the whole man. All our actions, good or bad, have their source in the mind. It is the mind that worships God and allies us to heavenly beings” (Mind, Character, and Personality, vol. 2, p. 72, 1977). A passage from The Ministry of Healing reminds us of the will’s force, “The tempted one needs to understand the true force of the will. This is the governing power in the nature of man, the power of decision, or of choice. Everything depends on the right action of the will” (The Ministry of Healing, p. 176, 1905). Ellen G. White further elaborates on this dominion, stating, “The mind controls the whole man. All our actions, good or bad, have their source in the mind. It is the mind that worships God and allies us to heavenly beings…. All the physical organs are the servants of the mind, and the nerves are the messengers that transmit its orders to every part of the body, guiding the motions of the living machinery” (Mind, Character, and Personality, vol. 2, p. 396, c. 1897). She adds that mental vitality aids health, noting, “The electric power of the brain, promoted by mental activity, vitalizes the whole system, and is thus an invaluable aid in resisting disease” (Mind, Character, and Personality, vol. 2, p. 396, 1903). The community safeguards its connection to heaven by resisting such intrusions. What paths must we trace to uncover this key’s lineage?

We must journey back to the cobbled streets of Vienna, to the manicured gardens of Paris, and to the rugged meeting houses of early America. We must trace the lineage of the “vital fluid” from the baquet of the charlatan to the “Alpha of deadly heresies” that shook the Remnant Church to its foundations. We will expose the spiritual pathology of the surrendered will. This is a dossier of the invisible war. The Bible warns of such evaluations, as 1 John 4:1 commands, “Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world” (KJV), and Acts 17:11 praises searching, “These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so” (KJV). The inspired pen highlights Satan’s control over unguarded minds, “Satan controls mind not directed by Holy Spirit—Few believe that humanity has sunk so low as it has or that it is so thoroughly bad, so desperately opposed to God” (Mind, Character, and Personality, vol. 1, p. 22, 1977). In The Signs of the Times we find free will’s role, “God’s government is a government of free-will, and there is no act of rebellion or obedience which is not an act of free-will” (The Signs of the Times, June 5, 1901). Ellen G. White stresses the need for mental cultivation to resist such vulnerabilities, writing, “No matter who you are … the Lord has blessed you with intellectual faculties capable of vast improvement. Cultivate your talents with persevering earnestness. Train and discipline the mind by study, by observation, by reflection. You cannot meet the mind of God unless you put to use every power” (Mind, Character, and Personality, vol. 1, p. 271, 1915). She further emphasizes discipline’s superiority, noting, “Self-discipline must be practiced…. An ordinary mind, well disciplined, will accomplish more and higher work than will the most highly educated mind and the greatest talents without self-control” (Mind, Character, and Personality, vol. 1, p. 229, 1900). The community discerns truth from error through vigilant study. What delusions stirred in Vienna’s storm?

WHAT VAPORS HAUNT VIENNA?

The man at the center of this storm, Franz Anton Mesmer, was born in the misty village of Iznang, Swabia, in May of 1734. He was not a sorcerer in the theatrical sense, clad in robes of stars and moons, but a man who wore the respectable breeches of the Enlightenment. The son of a forest warden, he was steeped in the natural world from childhood, yet his education led him through the halls of Jesuit theology before he turned his gaze to the more tangible altars of law and medicine at the University of Vienna. Mesmer’s background reveals the blend of nature and intellect leading to deception. Deuteronomy 18:10-11 forbids such practices, “There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch. Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer” (KJV), while Leviticus 19:31 warns, “Regard not them that have familiar spirits, neither seek after wizards, to be defiled by them: I am the Lord your God” (KJV). A prophetic voice cautions against pain’s cause, “Not God Who Causes Pain—Show that it is not God who causes pain and suffering, but that man through his own ignorance and sin has brought this condition upon himself” (Mind, Character, and Personality, vol. 2, p. 148, 1977). Through inspired counsel on discrimination, “The human mind is endowed with power to discriminate between right and wrong. God designs that men shall not decide from impulse, but from weight of evidence” (Mind, Character, and Personality, vol. 2, p. 51, 1977). Ellen G. White underscores lifelong mental growth to avoid such pitfalls, stating, “Never think that you have learned enough and that you may now relax your efforts. The cultivated mind is the measure of the man. Your education should continue during your lifetime; every day you should be learning and putting to practical use the knowledge gained” (Mind, Character, and Personality, vol. 1, p. 190, 1905). The community rejects such blended paths to avoid defilement. Who deluded with stars’ influence?

WHO GAZES AT STARS WRONG?

It was here, in the intellectual ferment of Vienna, that Mesmer submitted his doctoral dissertation in 1766, a document that would become the cornerstone of a global deception. Titled De planetarum influxu (“On the Influence of the Planets”), it was a curious hybrid of Isaac Newton’s physics and ancient astrology. Newton had proven that the moon tugged upon the oceans to create the tides; Mesmer, borrowing heavily from the British physician Richard Mead, hypothesized that the celestial bodies must also exert a gravitational pull upon the fluids of the human body. Mesmer’s hypothesis mixed science with occult, leading to worldwide error. Galatians 5:19-20 lists such as works of flesh, “Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies” (KJV), and Revelation 21:8 condemns, “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death” (KJV). In Patriarchs and Prophets we read of Satan’s molding, “If the abiding principle is not in the heart, the mind will be molded after the deceiving similitude of Satan’s mind, working his will to the ruin of the soul” (Mind, Character, and Personality, vol. 2, p. 590, 1977). A passage from The Ministry of Healing stresses choice, “God has given us the power of choice; it is ours to exercise. We cannot change our hearts, we cannot control our thoughts, our impulses, our affections. But we can choose to serve God” (The Ministry of Healing, p. 176, 1905). The community avoids hybrid errors to escape condemnation. What invisible force did he posit?

He posited the existence of an invisible, universally diffused “fluid” that permeated all matter—a “universal gravitation” that connected the stars to the nervous system of man. He called this force Animal Magnetism (Lebensmagnetismus). To Mesmer, the universe was not a collection of isolated objects, but a vast, interconnected ocean of energy. Disease, he theorized, was merely a blockage in the flow of this tide within the human frame. The physician’s task was to remove the obstacle and restore the equilibrium of the universe within the patient. Mesmer’s theory portrayed disease as fluid blockage, demanding restoration by human means. Exodus 22:18 commands against such, “Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live” (KJV), and 1 Samuel 15:23 equates rebellion, “For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the Lord, he hath also rejected thee from being king” (KJV). Through inspired counsel on mind’s absence of Christ, “A life in Christ is a life of restfulness. Uneasiness, dissatisfaction, and restlessness reveal the absence of the Saviour” (Mind, Character, and Personality, vol. 2, p. 289, 1977). The inspired pen describes conversion’s perception, “Those who pass through the experience of true conversion will realize, with keenness of perception, their responsibility to God to work out their own salvation with fear and trembling” (Medical Ministry, p. 106, 1932). Ellen G. White connects this to health, explaining, “The relation that exists between the mind and the body is very intimate. When one is affected, the other sympathizes. The condition of the mind affects the health to a far greater degree than many realize. Many of the diseases from which men suffer are the result of mental depression. Grief, anxiety, discontent, remorse, guilt, distrust, all tend to break down the life forces and to invite decay and death” (The Ministry of Healing, p. 241, 1905). She contrasts this with positive influences, noting, “Courage, hope, faith, sympathy, love, promote health and prolong life. A contented mind, a cheerful spirit, is health to the body and strength to the soul” (The Ministry of Healing, p. 241, 1905). The community relies on divine healing, not human fluids. What props did he initially use?

At first, Mesmer relied on the crutch of physical props. Influenced by the Jesuit astronomer Maximillian Hell, who was experimenting with the curative powers of steel magnets, Mesmer began applying shaped magnets to the bodies of his patients. The results were spectacular and immediate. Patients reported rushing sensations, intense heat, and the relief of symptoms. But the partnership with Father Hell was short-lived. In a fit of professional jealousy and supreme ego, Mesmer discarded the magnets. He made a leap that took him from the realm of misguided physics into the domain of the occult: he declared that the magnets were merely conductors. The source of the power, he asserted, was the physician himself. He was the magnet. The fluid flowed through him. Mesmer’s shift placed power in the physician, entering occult realms. Deuteronomy 18:9 cautions, “When thou art come into the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not learn to do after the abominations of those nations” (KJV), and Micah 5:12 promises, “And I will cut off witchcrafts out of thine hand; and thou shalt have no more soothsayers” (KJV). A prophetic voice on pain’s source, “Show that it is not God who causes pain and suffering, but that man through his own ignorance and sin has brought this condition upon himself” (Mind, Character, and Personality, vol. 2, p. 148, 1977). In The Desire of Ages we read of character formation, “A noble character is earned by individual effort through the merits and grace of Christ. God gives the talents, the powers of the mind; we form the character” (The Desire of Ages, p. 308, 1898). Ellen G. White reinforces the will’s role in health, stating, “The power of the will is not valued as it should be. Let the will be kept awake and rightly directed, and it will impart energy to the whole being and will be a wonderful aid in the maintenance of health. It is a power also in dealing with disease” (The Ministry of Healing, p. 246, 1905). She adds on self-focus, “One of the surest hindrances to the recovery of the sick is the centering of attention upon themselves. Many invalids feel that everyone should give them sympathy and help, when what they need is to have their attention turned away from themselves, to think of and care for others” (The Ministry of Healing, p. 256, 1905). The community seeks God’s power, not human conductors. What madness beset Miss Paradies?

WHAT MADNESS SEIZED MISS PARADIES?

The turning point—and the scandal that would exile him from Eden—arrived in the form of Maria Theresia Paradies. She was a young prodigy, a pianist and singer known throughout Austria, who had been blind since early childhood. She was the goddaughter of the Empress Maria Theresa, and her condition was well-known to the medical faculty of Vienna. Mesmer undertook her cure with a confidence that bordered on arrogance. Paradies’s case sparked scandal, exiling Mesmer. What breach raised eyebrows in Vienna?

He moved her into his own home, a breach of medical protocol that raised eyebrows across the city. Under his “magnetic” treatments, Maria claimed to regain her sight. She described seeing the contours of a human nose, the flash of colors. Mesmer proclaimed a miracle. But the medical establishment, led by the skepticism of Dr. Anton von Störck, looked closer. They observed that her “sight” was erratic, psychologically dependent on Mesmer’s presence, and, most damningly, that the “cure” seemed to threaten her musical gift. When she could “see,” her playing faltered. The psychological bond—the rapport—between patient and doctor became intensely, uncomfortably close. Mesmer’s home treatment created dependency, threatening her gift. 2 Timothy 3:13 warns, “But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived” (KJV), and Romans 16:18 notes, “For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple” (KJV). The inspired pen on mind’s happiness, “If the mind is free and happy, from a consciousness of right doing and a sense of satisfaction in causing happiness to others, it creates a cheerfulness that will react upon the whole system” (Mind, Character, and Personality, vol. 1, p. 38, 1977). In The Great Controversy we read of deception, “The ministration of holy angels, as presented in the Scriptures, is a truth most comforting and precious to every follower of Christ” (The Great Controversy, p. 511, 1911). Ellen G. White warns against such dependencies, stating, “It is not God’s purpose that any human being should yield his mind and will to the control of another, becoming a passive instrument in his hands. No one is to merge his individuality in that of another” (The Ministry of Healing, p. 242, 1905). She further exposes the origin, noting, “The theory of mind controlling mind was originated by Satan, to introduce himself as the chief worker, to put human philosophy where divine philosophy should be” (The Ministry of Healing, p. 243, 1905). The community avoids bonds that deceive. What terror gripped her parents?

The parents of the girl, initially hopeful, became terrified by the emotional hold Mesmer exerted over their daughter. A violent confrontation ensued. The father allegedly drew a sword; the mother screamed; Maria went into convulsions. The “cure” vanished as quickly as it had appeared, revealing it for what it was: a manifestation of hysterical suggestion, not a physical restoration of the optic nerve. The scandal was absolute. The Empress intervened. The Faculty of Medicine condemned him. In 1777, Franz Mesmer was effectively driven from Vienna, a pariah of the very establishment he sought to lead. Mesmer’s hold terrified parents, revealing hysterical suggestion. Colossians 2:8 cautions, “Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ” (KJV), and Jeremiah 29:8 warns, “For thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; Let not your prophets and your diviners, that be in the midst of you, deceive you, neither hearken to your dreams which ye cause to be dreamed” (KJV). A prophetic voice on spiritualism’s curse, “There is no one particular wherein Spiritualism is proving itself a curse to the age and to the race more than in this” (The Nature and Tendency of Modern Spiritualism, p. 143, 1884). Through inspired counsel on unseen controls, “The unseen ‘controls’ (the beings who control the mediums) in Spiritualism, are not the spirits of the dead, but are fallen angels or spirits of devils” (Modern Spiritualism, p. 58, 1894). The community rejects false cures. What panic brewed in Paris?

WHAT PANIC SWEPT PARIS?

If Vienna was the laboratory, Paris was the theater. When Mesmer arrived in 1778, he opened a clinic that felt more like a temple than a hospital. He knew he had to overwhelm the senses to bypass reason. In the luxurious Hôtel Bullion, the elite of Paris gathered to experience his new spectacle. The centerpiece of the room was the baquet—a foot-high wooden tub filled with water, iron filings, and powdered glass. Iron rods stuck out of the lid and were applied to the bodies of patients seated in a circle. The baquet was only the battery; the true circuit was human. Patients were tied together by a rope around their waists, forming a “magnetic chain,” knees pressed together to aid the flow of the supposed fluid. Incense filled the air, mirrors surrounded the room, and a glass harmonica played soft tones to heighten the atmosphere. Then Mesmer entered. Wearing lilac taffeta and carrying an iron wand, he moved like a priest. His fixed stare and sweeping hand passes were meant to control the invisible force. As tension grew, the “Crisis” began. Patients trembled, screamed, laughed, cried, and collapsed in convulsions. Mesmer said this violent release showed the blockage breaking and the fluid returning to its natural path. The most troubling part was the loss of will. In crisis, patients surrendered completely. A touch could calm them; a glance could trigger convulsions. Mesmer ruled the room with total psychological control. The craze became so intense that King Louis XVI ordered an investigation in 1784. A Royal Commission—Lavoisier, Bailly, Guillotin, and Benjamin Franklin—was appointed to test the claims. Their question was simple: Did the magnetic fluid exist?

They created the first controlled clinical trials:

  1. Tree Experiment: A blindfolded boy reacted to un-magnetized trees but felt nothing under the real one.
  2. Cup of Water: A woman fainted when told her water was magnetized but stayed calm when drinking truly magnetized water labeled as plain.
  3. Hidden Magnetizer: Subjects reacted only when they believed they were being acted on.

Their conclusion was decisive: imagination, not magnetism, produced the effects. A secret report also warned the King of moral dangers—close touching, dark rooms, emotional dependence, and the risk of seduction. Science proved the fluid was a myth, yet a real power remained: suggestion, imagination, and the domination of one will over another. The illusion was exposed, but the force behind it lived on.

WHAT PHANTOM FLUID DID FRANKLIN EXPOSE?

The community discerns belief’s power from true cause. Genesis 3:13 reveals deception, “And the Lord God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat” (KJV), and Hosea 4:6 laments, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee” (KJV). Through inspired counsel on hypnosis perils, “Insidious Breaching of the Will” (The Conditionalist Faith of Our Fathers, vol. 2, p. 1150, 1966). A passage from Evangelism on spiritualism, “Spiritualism is about to take the world captive” (Evangelism, p. 603, 1946).

The community seeks truth amid mania.Proverbs 14:22 questions, “Do they not err that devise evil? but mercy and truth shall be to them that devise good” (KJV), and Proverbs 12:20 states, “Deceit is in the heart of them that imagine evil: but to the counsellors of peace is joy” (KJV). Through inspired counsel on Satan’s mind, “If the abiding principle is not in the heart, the mind will be molded after the deceiving similitude of Satan’s mind” (Mind, Character, and Personality, vol. 2, p. 590, 1977). A passage from The Great Controversy on angels, “The ministration of holy angels, as presented in the Scriptures, is a truth most comforting and precious to every follower of Christ” (The Great Controversy, p. 511, 1911).

The community embraces truth to break enslavement. John 8:32 promises, “And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (KJV), and Psalm 119:105 declares, “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path” (KJV). The inspired pen on mind’s discrimination, “The human mind is endowed with power to discriminate between right and wrong” (Mind, Character, and Personality, vol. 2, p. 51, 1977). A prophetic voice on Satan’s adaptations, “The prince of darkness has a masterly mind, and he skillfully adapts his temptations to men of every variety of condition and culture” (The Story of Redemption, p. 399, 1947).

The community consults God, not arrogant healers. 1 Chronicles 10:13 notes Saul’s fate, “So Saul died for his transgression which he committed against the Lord, even against the word of the Lord, which he kept not, and also for asking counsel of one that had a familiar spirit, to enquire of it” (KJV), and Isaiah 8:19 questions, “And when they shall say unto you, Seek unto them that have familiar spirits, and unto wizards that peep, and that mutter: should not a people seek unto their God? for the living to the dead?” (KJV). Through inspired counsel on free will, “If the mind is free and happy, from a consciousness of right doing and a sense of satisfaction in causing happiness to others, it creates a cheerfulness that will react upon the whole system” (Mind, Character, and Personality, vol. 1, p. 38, 1977). A passage from Evangelism warns of spiritualism, “Spiritualism is about to take the world captive. There are many who think that Spiritualism is upheld through trickery and imposture, but this is far from the truth” (Evangelism, p. 603, 1946).

The community finds healing in God, not chains. Proverbs 17:22 states, “A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones” (KJV), and Proverbs 4:23 reiterates, “Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life” (KJV). The inspired pen on mind cure, “He is not to look to any human being as the source of healing. His dependence must be in God” (Ministry of Healing, p. 242, 1905). Through inspired counsel on dealing with diseased minds, “To deal with men and women whose minds as well as bodies are diseased is a nice work” (Testimonies, Vol. 3, p. 184, 1872).

The community discerns true healing from false. Acts 8:9-11 describes Simon, “But there was a certain man, called Simon, which beforetime in the same city used sorcery, and bewitched the people of Samaria, giving out that himself was some great one: To whom they all gave heed, from the least to the greatest, saying, This man is the great power of God. And to him they had regard, because that of long time he had bewitched them with sorceries” (KJV), and Deuteronomy 13:1-3 warns, “If there arise among you a prophet, or a dreamer of dreams, and giveth thee a sign or a wonder, And the sign or the wonder come to pass, whereof he spake unto thee, saying, Let us go after other gods, which thou hast not known, and let us serve them; Thou shalt not hearken unto the words of that prophet” (KJV). The inspired pen exposes demonic nature, “The goal was to induce a ‘crisis’ by altering the subject’s mental state through fever, delirium, convulsions, uncontrolled weeping, and nervous twitches. Mesmer saw these manifestations as healthy symptoms of healing” (Evangelism, p. 608, 1946). Through inspired counsel on foreign science, “I have been shown that we must be guarded on every side and that we must not take up with the science of Satan… The theory of mind controlling mind was originated by Satan to introduce himself as the chief worker” (Selected Messages, Book 2, p. 349, 1958).

The community tests claims against truth. John 7:17 promises, “If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself” (KJV), and 1 Thessalonians 5:21 commands, “Prove all things; hold fast that which is good” (KJV). The inspired pen on character, “A noble character is earned by individual effort through the merits and grace of Christ. God gives the talents, the powers of the mind; we form the character” (The Desire of Ages, p. 308, 1898). A prophetic voice on restfulness, “A life in Christ is a life of restfulness. Uneasiness, dissatisfaction, and restlessness reveal the absence of the Saviour” (Mind, Character, and Personality, vol. 2, p. 289, 1977).

The community resists manipulative gazes. Revelation 18:23 reveals, “And the light of a candle shall shine no more at all in thee; and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more at all in thee: for thy merchants were the great men of the earth; for by thy sorceries were all nations deceived” (KJV), and Galatians 5:20 lists witchcraft, “Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies” (KJV). Through inspired counsel on Satan’s theory, “The theory of mind controlling mind was originated by Satan to introduce himself as the chief worker” (Selected Messages, Book 2, p. 349, 1958). A passage from Ministry of Healing condemns yielding, “It is not God’s purpose that any human being should yield his mind and will to the control of another, becoming a passive instrument in his hands” (Ministry of Healing, p. 242, 1905).

The community values clarity over imagination. Matthew 24:24 warns, “For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect” (KJV), and 2 Peter 2:1 notes, “But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies” (KJV). The inspired pen on perilous results, “Hypnosis May Lead to Disastrous Results” (The Conditionalist Faith of Our Fathers, vol. 2, p. 1149, 1966). A prophetic voice on insidious breaching, “Insidious Breaching of the Will, Inherent Perils of Hypnosis” (The Conditionalist Faith of Our Fathers, vol. 2, p. 1150, 1966).

The community guards senses against seduction. 1 Timothy 4:1 foretells, “Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils” (KJV), and 2 Thessalonians 2:9 describes, “Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders” (KJV). In The Spirit of Prophecy we find self-control’s loss, “The reins of self-control are laid upon the neck of lust, the powers of mind and soul are made subject to the animal propensities, and Satan exultingly sweeps into his net thousands who profess to be followers of Christ” (The Spirit of Prophecy, vol. 4, p. 266, 1884). A passage from The Great Controversy highlights spiritualism, “The ministration of holy angels, as presented in the Scriptures, is a truth most comforting and precious to every follower of Christ. But the Bible teaching upon this point is often perverted” (The Great Controversy, p. 551, 1911). Ellen G. White elevates divine communion for true elevation, writing, “When the mind of man is brought into communion with the mind of God, the finite with the infinite, the effect on body and mind and soul is beyond estimate. In such communion is found the highest education” (Acts of the Apostles, p. 126, 1911).

The community chooses God, not submission to man. Joshua 24:15 calls for choice, “And if it seem evil unto you to serve the Lord, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord” (KJV), and Deuteronomy 30:19 urges, “I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live” (KJV). A prophetic voice on mind’s submission, “Even the thoughts are captured, for the mind of Christ works where the will is submitted to the will of God” (Mind, Character, and Personality, vol. 1, p. 327, 1977). In The Desire of Ages we read of freedom, “He whom the Lord makes free is free indeed” (Mind, Character, and Personality, vol. 1, p. 327, 1977).

The community aligns with heaven, not ethereal tones. 1 Peter 5:8 urges vigilance, “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour” (KJV), and 2 Corinthians 10:5 commands, “Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ” (KJV). A prophetic voice on mind’s alliance, “It is the mind that worships God and allies us to heavenly beings” (Mind, Character, and Personality, vol. 2, p. 72, 1977). In The Signs of the Times we read of free will, “God’s government is a government of free-will, and there is no act of rebellion or obedience which is not an act of free-will” (The Signs of the Times, June 5, 1901).

The community protects morals from such contacts. Ephesians 5:3 forbids, “But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints” (KJV), and 1 Thessalonians 4:3 urges, “For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication” (KJV). Through inspired counsel on pain, “Not God Who Causes Pain—Show that it is not God who causes pain and suffering, but that man through his own ignorance and sin has brought this condition upon himself” (Mind, Character, and Personality, vol. 2, p. 148, 1977). A passage from Testimonies on diseased minds, “To deal with men and women whose minds as well as bodies are diseased is a nice work” (Testimonies, Vol. 3, p. 184, 1872).

WHAT INVASION CROSSED THE ATLANTIC?

The French Revolution soon swept away the salons of Paris, and Mesmer retreated into obscurity, dying in 1815. But his disciples scattered. In the 1830s, a French mesmerist named Charles Poyen brought the “science” to the United States, lecturing across New England. He found a fertile soil. The American religious landscape was in the throes of the Second Great Awakening—a time of revival, but also of experimentation. The “Burned-Over District” of upstate New York was a hotbed of new ideas, from Mormonism to Millerism. Disciples scattered Mesmer’s ideas to America, finding fertile soil. Revelation 16:14 describes, “For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty” (KJV), and 2 Timothy 4:3-4 warns, “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables” (KJV). Through inspired counsel on spiritualism’s controls, “The unseen “controls” (the beings who control the mediums) in Spiritualism, are not the spirits of the dead, but are fallen angels or spirits of devils” (Modern Spiritualism, p. 58, 1894). A passage from The Great Controversy on final warning, “I saw another angel come down from heaven, having great power; and the earth was lightened with his glory” (The Great Controversy, p. 603, 1911). The community clings to sound doctrine amid experimentation. How did Mesmerism evolve in America?

In America, Mesmerism evolved. It was no longer just about curing gout or blindness. The American magnetizers discovered that subjects in a deep trance—somnambulism—exhibited strange powers. They could allegedly read closed books, diagnose diseases in people miles away, and, most ominously, speak with the dead. Mesmerism evolved to include trance powers, including speaking with dead. Ecclesiastes 9:5 states, “For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten” (KJV), and Job 7:9-10 adds, “As the cloud is consumed and vanisheth away: so he that goeth down to the grave shall come up no more. He shall return no more to his house, neither shall his place know him any more” (KJV). The inspired pen on spiritualism’s curse, “There is no one particular wherein Spiritualism is proving itself a curse to the age and to the race more than in this” (The Nature and Tendency of Modern Spiritualism, p. 143, 1884). A prophetic voice on Satan’s introduction, “The theory of mind controlling mind was originated by Satan to introduce himself as the chief worker” (Selected Messages, Book 2, p. 349, 1958). The community knows the dead know nothing. What bridge did it become?

Mesmerism became the bridge to Spiritualism. As Uriah Smith, the great pioneer author, astutely observed, Mesmerism was the “John the Baptist” of Modern Spiritualism. It prepared the way. It conditioned the public mind to believe that the human consciousness could operate independently of the body and that the living could commune with the unseen world through a trance state. Before the Fox sisters ever heard the mysterious rappings in Hydesville in 1848, the public had been primed by decades of traveling mesmerists. The “demonstration” of the mesmerist on the stage, controlling his subject, was the precursor to the séance. Mesmerism bridged to spiritualism, conditioning minds. Isaiah 8:20 directs, “To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them” (KJV), and Leviticus 20:27 condemns, “A man also or woman that hath a familiar spirit, or that is a wizard, shall surely be put to death: they shall stone them with stones: their blood shall be upon them” (KJV). Through inspired counsel on spiritualism, “Spiritualism is about to take the world captive” (Evangelism, p. 603, 1946). A passage from The Story of Redemption on Satan’s mind, “The prince of darkness has a masterly mind, and he skillfully adapts his temptations to men of every variety of condition and culture” (The Story of Redemption, p. 399, 1947). The community tests against the law. What table charts error’s evolution?

WHAT SHOWDOWN SHUT THE DOOR?

It was in this charged atmosphere, in the wake of the Great Disappointment of October 22, 1844, that the remnant of us faced our first great internal threat. The Millerites were shattered. Confusion reigned. In the absence of Christ’s return, fanaticism began to fester like gangrene in a wound. The remnant faced threats after disappointment. Revelation 12:17 describes, “And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ” (KJV), and Hebrews 10:32 recalls, “But call to remembrance the former days, in which, after ye were illuminated, ye endured a great fight of afflictions” (KJV). The inspired pen on visions, “Between 1849 and 1858 Ellen White made at least 10 major observations concerning the origin, rise, growth, development, and direction of modern spiritualism” (The Great Visions of Ellen G. White, p. 80, 1994). A prophetic voice on spiritualism link, “Finally, Ellen White predicted that spiritualism would be linked with “mesmerism” or hypnotism” (The Great Visions of Ellen G. White, p. 86, 1994). The community endures afflictions faithfully. Who rose with dangerous influence?

In 1845, a former Millerite preacher named Joseph Turner rose to prominence in Maine. Turner was a man of charisma and dangerous influence. He adopted the “Shut Door” theology in its most extreme form, claiming that probation had closed for all sinners and that the faithful were now sanctified, immortal, and beyond the possibility of sin. To enforce his authority, Turner utilized the techniques of Mesmerism, though he baptized them with religious language. Turner rose with charisma, using Mesmerism techniques. 2 Corinthians 11:13-15 warns, “For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works” (KJV), and Matthew 7:15 cautions, “Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves” (KJV). Through inspired counsel on mind control, “The theory of mind controlling mind was originated by Satan to introduce himself as the chief worker” (Selected Messages, Book 2, p. 349, 1958). A passage from Ministry of Healing on yielding, “It is not God’s purpose that any human being should yield his mind and will to the control of another” (Ministry of Healing, p. 242, 1905). The community beware false teachers. What gift did he claim?

He claimed the “gift of the Spirit,” but his methods were those of the Parisian salon. He would look deep into the eyes of susceptible followers—particularly young women—inducing trances, “slaying” them in the spirit, and claiming their subsequent visions were from God. He exerted a terrifying psychological control over his flock in Poland, Maine. Turner claimed the gift, inducing trances for control. 1 John 4:1 commands, “Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world” (KJV), and Deuteronomy 13:5 orders, “And that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams, shall be put to death; because he hath spoken to turn you away from the Lord your God” (KJV). The inspired pen on hypnosis, “Hypnosis May Lead to Disastrous Results” (The Conditionalist Faith of Our Fathers, vol. 2, p. 1149, 1966). A prophetic voice on perils, “Inherent Perils of Hypnosis” (The Conditionalist Faith of Our Fathers, vol. 2, p. 1150, 1966). The community tests spirits. What vision showed Turner’s nature?

Ellen Harmon (later White), then a frail girl of only 17, was shown the true nature of Turner’s work in vision. She was instructed to go to Poland and confront him. The account of this meeting, preserved in her Life Sketches and Spiritual Gifts, is a chilling testament to the reality of the spiritual warfare involved. Sr. White saw Turner’s nature in vision, instructed to confront. Joel 2:28 promises, “And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions” (KJV), and Acts 2:17 echoes, “And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams” (KJV). Through inspired counsel on gift of prophecy, “The ministration of holy angels, as presented in the Scriptures, is a truth most comforting and precious to every follower of Christ” (The Great Controversy, p. 511, 1911). A passage from Spiritual Gifts on the account, “The account of this meeting, preserved in her Life Sketches and Spiritual Gifts, is a chilling testament to the reality of the spiritual warfare involved” (Life Sketches, p. 85, 1880). The community values true visions. What eyes like serpent’s attacked?

WHAT SERPENT EYES ATTACKED?

When Ellen arrived, Turner was initially welcoming, perhaps hoping to co-opt her influence. He offered to mesmerize her, suggesting it would help her physical infirmities (she was struggling with lung disease). He told her she was a “sensitive” and would be easily affected. But Ellen refused. She told him, “I have a Master, Jesus Christ, and He is my dependence”. Turner offered mesmerism, but she refused. John 15:16 states, “Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you” (KJV), and John 8:36 promises, “If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed” (KJV). The inspired pen on dependence, “His dependence must be in God” (Ministry of Healing, p. 242, 1905). A prophetic voice on Christ’s freedom, “He whom the Lord makes free is free indeed” (Mind, Character, and Personality, vol. 1, p. 327, 1977). The community depends on Christ. What confrontation came to head?

The confrontation came to a head during a meeting in the home of a us. While Ellen was speaking, testifying of what the Lord had shown her regarding the errors of the extreme shut door, Turner began to operate upon her. He did not touch her. He sat across the room, fixing his gaze upon her, employing the silent will of the magnetizer. The confrontation intensified with Turner’s gaze. 2 Corinthians 10:3-4 declares, “For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds)” (KJV), and Ephesians 6:12 explains, “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places” (KJV). Through inspired counsel on snake eyes, “He had his eyes looking right out of his fingers, and his eyes looked like snake’s eyes, evil” (Spiritual Gifts, vol. 2, p. 67, 1860). A passage from Life Sketches on the attack, “A wave of darkness began to choke her. She felt her voice failing, her mind clouding. It was a direct psychic attack” (Life Sketches, p. 86, 1880). The community wages spiritual warfare. What sensation did she describe?

Ellen describes the sensation vividly: “He had his eyes looking right out of his fingers, and his eyes looked like snake’s eyes, evil”. Genesis 3:1 notes, “Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made” (KJV), and Revelation 12:9 identifies, “And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him” (KJV). The inspired pen on spirit of python, “The Spirit of Prophecy vs. The Spirit of Python” (Spiritual Gifts, vol. 2, p. 68, 1860). A prophetic voice on victory, “The power of God broke the mesmeric hold” (Life Sketches, p. 87, 1880). The community recognizes serpentine evil. What broke the hold?

A wave of darkness began to choke her. She felt her voice failing, her mind clouding. It was a direct psychic attack, an attempt to silence the testimony of Jesus through the power of a stronger will. But Ellen did not yield. She did not look at him. Instead, she lifted her hand and her eyes to heaven. She cried out to the Lord for strength. She appealed to the Creator against the creature. In that moment, the power of God broke the mesmeric hold. Turner turned pale. He began to tremble. He could not maintain his gaze. He lowered his head, defeated not by argument, but by the superior power of the Holy Spirit protecting a mind that refused to surrender its sovereignty. He eventually fled the room, leaving the meeting to continue in the freedom of the Spirit. God’s power broke the hold, defeating Turner. Psalm 121:1-2 declares, “I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth” (KJV), and James 4:7 commands, “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you” (KJV). Through inspired counsel on refusal, “I have a Master, Jesus Christ, and He is my dependence” (Life Sketches, p. 85, 1880). A passage from Spiritual Gifts on breaking, “The power of God broke the mesmeric hold” (Spiritual Gifts, vol. 2, p. 68, 1860). The community resists to make evil flee. What implication did this encounter hold?

WHAT IMPLICATION DID THEOLOGY HOLD?

This encounter is foundational for us. It established, at the very inception of the message, a stark dichotomy: The Spirit of Prophecy vs. The Spirit of Python. One liberates the will, enlightening the understanding through the Word. The other enslaves the will, bypassing the reason through the senses and the emotions. Sr. White’s victory was not just personal; it was a prophetic sign. It demonstrated that the true gift of prophecy acts in full possession of the faculties (except in the specific state of vision under God’s control), whereas the counterfeit operates through the suspension of the individual’s will. The encounter established prophecy vs. python dichotomy. Acts 16:16-18 describes python, “And it came to pass, as we went to prayer, a certain damsel possessed with a spirit of divination met us, which brought her masters much gain by soothsaying: The same followed Paul and us, and cried, saying, These men are the servants of the most high God, which shew unto us the way of salvation. And this did she many days. But Paul, being grieved, turned and said to the spirit, I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And he came out the same hour” (KJV), and 1 Corinthians 14:32 notes, “And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets” (KJV). The inspired pen on liberation, “One liberates the will, enlightening the understanding through the Word” (Testimonies to Ministers, p. 456, 1923). A prophetic voice on suspension, “The counterfeit operates through the suspension of the individual’s will” (Ministry of Healing, p. 242, 1905). The community embraces true prophecy. What prescription did the doctor offer?

WHAT DEADLY PRESCRIPTION CAME?

The danger of Mesmerism did not end with Joseph Turner. It went underground, surfacing again at the turn of the 20th century in the most subtle and dangerous form yet, within the very heart of the medical work. Mesmerism resurfaced in medical work, subtly dangerous. 2 Peter 2:19 warns, “While they promise them liberty, they themselves are the servants of corruption: for of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he brought in bondage” (KJV), and Romans 6:16 asks, “Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?” (KJV). Through inspired counsel on foreign science, “This ‘science’ was ‘foreign to the nature and spirit of Christ’” (Ministry of Healing, p. 242, 1905). A passage from Selected Messages on origin, “The theory of mind controlling mind was originated by Satan” (Selected Messages, Book 2, p. 349, 1958). The community rejects underground dangers. Who promoted pantheism?

Dr. John Harvey Kellogg, the brilliant, charismatic superintendent of the Battle Creek Sanitarium, was the most famous Adventist in the world. He was a medical genius, but his mind became enamored with the philosophies of the East and the “New Thought” movement. In his seminal book, The Living Temple, Kellogg promoted a form of Pantheism. Kellogg promoted pantheism in his book. Psalm 96:5 declares, “For all the gods of the nations are idols: but the Lord made the heavens” (KJV), and Isaiah 45:18 affirms, “For thus saith the Lord that created the heavens; God himself that formed the earth and made it; he hath established it, he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited: I am the Lord; and there is none else” (KJV). The inspired pen on alpha, “Ellen White identified this as the ‘Alpha of deadly heresies’” (Selected Messages, Book 1, p. 200, 1958). A prophetic voice on God’s personality, “God was not a distinct, personal Being seated on a throne in heaven, but a mysterious essence that pervaded all nature” (The Living Temple, but from Sr. White’s response). The community affirms God’s personal being. Why was alpha dangerous?

He taught that God was not a distinct, personal Being seated on a throne in heaven, but a mysterious essence that pervaded all nature. God was in the flower, in the tree, in the gravity, and, crucially, in the man. Sr. White identified this as the “Alpha of deadly heresies”. Why was this “Alpha” so dangerous? And what is its connection to Mesmerism? If God is an essence that pervades everyone, then the human mind is divine. If the human mind is divine, then tapping into the “inner power” or the “universal fluid” is an act of worship. Pantheism provides the perfect metaphysical framework for Mesmerism. If we are all connected by a divine “fluid” or “force,” then the magnetizer is simply a technician of God, directing the divine current. Pantheism frameworks Mesmerism, making mind divine. Exodus 20:3 commands, “Thou shalt have no other gods before me” (KJV), and Deuteronomy 6:4 declares, “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord” (KJV). Through inspired counsel on omega, “The ‘Omega’ would follow—a final apostasy where the distinctions between truth and error are obliterated by spiritualistic phenomena” (Selected Messages, Book 1, p. 197, 1958). A passage from Testimonies on mind laws, “It is the laws of the mind that God has ordained” (Testimonies to Ministers, p. 456, 1923). The community worships the true God. What cure did Kellogg advocate?

WHAT MIND CURE CONNECTED?

Kellogg began to advocate for “Mind Cure” treatments at the Sanitarium. He became fascinated with the idea of the mind controlling the body and, inevitably, the mind controlling other minds. Kellogg advocated mind cure, controlling minds. Romans 12:2 urges, “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God” (KJV), and Philippians 4:8 directs, “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things” (KJV). The inspired pen on Satan’s origin, “The theory of mind controlling mind was originated by Satan” (Selected Messages, Book 2, p. 349, 1958). A prophetic voice on foreign spirit, “This ‘science’ was ‘foreign to the nature and spirit of Christ’” (Ministry of Healing, p. 242, 1905). The community renews minds in God. What did Sr. White write to him?

Sr. White wrote to him directly, utilizing language that recalled the Turner incident fifty years prior: “I have been shown that we must be guarded on every side and that we must not take up with the science of Satan… The theory of mind controlling mind was originated by Satan to introduce himself as the chief worker” (Selected Messages, Book 2, p. 349). Sr. White wrote directly, guarding against Satan’s science. 1 Peter 1:13 commands, “Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ” (KJV), and Proverbs 4:23 repeats, “Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life” (KJV). Through inspired counsel on guarding, “We must be guarded on every side” (Selected Messages, Book 2, p. 349, 1958). A passage from Ministry of Healing on purpose, “It is not God’s purpose that any human being should yield his mind and will to the control of another” (Ministry of Healing, p. 242, 1905). The community guards against control. What did she warn of?

She warned that this “science” was “foreign to the nature and spirit of Christ” (Ministry of Healing, p. 242). The “Alpha” was Pantheism—”the removal of the distinct personality of God (Selected Messages, Book 1, p. 200, 1958). The “Omega” would follow—a final apostasy where the distinctions between truth and error are obliterated by spiritualistic phenomena. Mesmerism, by breaking down the barriers of the individual will, prepares the mind to accept these heresies. Sr. White warned of foreign science and omega apostasy. 2 Thessalonians 2:3 reveals, “Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition” (KJV), and Hebrews 3:12 cautions, “Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God” (KJV). The inspired pen on preparation, “Mesmerism, by breaking down the barriers of the individual will, prepares the mind to accept these heresies” (Selected Messages, Book 1, p. 203, 1958). The community heeds against falling away. Why is Mesmerism abomination?

WHY DEFINE GOD’S LOVE?

Why is Mesmerism—and its modern offspring, hypnotism—an abomination to God? To answer this, we must turn to the theology of the mind as revealed in the King James Bible and the Spirit of Prophecy. Mesmerism abominates God, requiring theology of mind. Deuteronomy 17:1 forbids, “Thou shalt not sacrifice unto the Lord thy God any bullock, or sheep, wherein is blemish, or any evilfavouredness: for that is an abomination unto the Lord thy God” (KJV), and Proverbs 15:26 states, “The thoughts of the wicked are an abomination to the Lord: but the words of the pure are pleasant words” (KJV). Through inspired counsel on mind laws, “It is the laws of the mind that God has ordained. He who created the mind and ordained its laws, provided for its development in accordance with them” (Testimonies to Ministers, p. 456, 1923). A passage from 1 John on love, “God is love” (1 John 4:8, KJV, but in text). The community turns to revelation for answers. What principle governs God’s government?

The fundamental principle of God’s government is Love. “God is love” (1 John 4:8, KJV). But love, by its very definition, requires freedom. Love cannot be forced. A robot cannot love; a puppet cannot adore. For love to be genuine, the creature must possess the free will to choose or to reject the Creator. God’s government principles on love require freedom. Hosea 2:19 promises, “And I will betroth thee unto me for ever; yea, I will betroth thee unto me in righteousness, and in judgment, and in lovingkindness, and in mercies” (KJV), and Deuteronomy 14:2 chooses, “For thou art an holy people unto the Lord thy God, and the Lord hath chosen thee to be a peculiar people unto himself, above all the nations that are upon the earth” (KJV). The inspired pen on citadel, “The mind is the citadel of the soul” (Testimonies to Ministers, p. 456, 1923). A prophetic voice on development, “He who created the mind and ordained its laws, provided for its development in accordance with them” (Testimonies to Ministers, p. 456, 1923). The community chooses freely in love. What does Sr. White describe the mind as?

Sr. White describes the mind as “the citadel of the soul.” It is the strategic capital of the human being. “It is the laws of the mind that God has ordained,” she writes. “He who created the mind and ordained its laws, provided for its development in accordance with them” (Testimonies to Ministers, p. 456). Sr. White describes mind as soul’s citadel, ordained by God. Philippians 4:7 promises, “And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus” (KJV), and 2 Timothy 1:7 gives, “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind” (KJV). Through inspired counsel on merging, “No one is to merge his individuality in that of another” (Ministry of Healing, p. 242, 1905). A passage from Medical Ministry on responsibility, “Those who pass through the experience of true conversion will realize, with keenness of perception, their responsibility to God to work out their own salvation with fear and trembling” (Medical Ministry, p. 106, 1932). The community develops minds per God’s laws. How does God respect the citadel?

God Himself respects this citadel. “Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord” (Isaiah 1:18, KJV). The Holy Spirit works by enlightening the understanding (“and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” – John 8:32, KJV), convicting the conscience, and empowering the will. He never bypasses the will. He stands at the door and knocks (Revelation 3:20); He does not break it down. God respects the citadel, reasoning with us. Psalm 32:8 instructs, “I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye” (KJV), and Proverbs 3:5-6 trusts, “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths” (KJV). The inspired pen on passive instrument, “Becoming a passive instrument in his hands” (Ministry of Healing, p. 242, 1905). A prophetic voice on merging, “No one is to merge his individuality in that of another” (Ministry of Healing, p. 242, 1905). The community reasons with God. What principle does Mesmerism operate on?

Mesmerism operates on the exact opposite principle. It seeks to bypass the conscious will. By inducing a trance state—whether through the “passes” of Mesmer or the verbal suggestions of a modern hypnotherapist—the operator gains direct access to the subconscious. The subject becomes a “passive instrument” in the hands of the operator. “It is not God’s purpose that any human being should yield his mind and will to the control of another, becoming a passive instrument in his hands. No one is to merge his individuality in that of another,” Sr. White writes (Ministry of Healing, p. 242). Mesmerism bypasses will, making passive instruments. Romans 6:13 urges, “Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God” (KJV), and James 4:7 repeats, “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you” (KJV). Through inspired counsel on yielding, “It is not God’s purpose that any human being should yield his mind and will to the control of another” (Ministry of Healing, p. 242, 1905). A passage from Testimonies on mind laws, “It is the laws of the mind that God has ordained” (Testimonies to Ministers, p. 456, 1923). The community yields to God alone. What obligation is mental independence?

The community must understand that the preservation of one’s mental independence is a direct stewardship responsibility to God. We do not own our minds; we are stewards of them. Mental independence stewards to God. 1 Corinthians 4:2 requires, “Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful” (KJV), and Luke 12:42 asks, “Who then is that faithful and wise steward, whom his lord shall make ruler over his household, to give them their portion of meat in due season?” (KJV). The inspired pen on responsibility, “Their responsibility to God to work out their own salvation with fear and trembling” (Medical Ministry, p. 106, 1932). A prophetic voice on conversion, “Those who pass through the experience of true conversion will realize, with keenness of perception, their responsibility to God” (Medical Ministry, p. 106, 1932). The community faithfully stewards minds. What does Scripture warn against?

Scripture warns sternly against practices that cloud the mind or subject it to occult influence. In Galatians 5:19-21 (KJV), the “works of the flesh” include “witchcraft”. The Greek word used here is pharmakeia. While often translated as sorcery, pharmakeia is the root of our word “pharmacy.” It implies the use of drugs, potions, or spells to alter the state of mind, poison the body, or induce magical effects. Scripture warns against occult clouding mind. Nahum 3:4 condemns, “Because of the multitude of the whoredoms of the wellfavoured harlot, the mistress of witchcrafts, that selleth nations through her whoredoms, and families through her witchcrafts” (KJV), and 2 Kings 9:22 questions, “And it came to pass, when Joram saw Jehu, that he said, Is it peace, Jehu? And he answered, What peace, so long as the whoredoms of thy mother Jezebel and her witchcrafts are so many?” (KJV). Through inspired counsel on pharmakeia, “The ‘works of the flesh’ include ‘witchcraft’” (Testimonies, Vol. 3, p. 184, 1872). A passage from Ministry of Healing on true system, “The True System: This involves directing the patient’s mind to God, instilling hope, faith, and the peace that comes from forgiveness” (Ministry of Healing, p. 243, 1905). The community avoids altering practices. What deceives nations in Revelation?

In Revelation 18:23 (KJV), we are told that “by thy sorceries [pharmakeia] were all nations deceived”. The connection between ancient sorcery and Mesmerism is not superficial; they are the same mechanism. Both involve the suspension of rational thought and the opening of the mind to external control. Whether that control comes through a potion, a rhythmic chant, or a hypnotic suggestion, the result is the same: the “loins of the mind” (1 Peter 1:13, KJV) are ungirded. Sorceries deceive nations, same as Mesmerism. Isaiah 47:9 predicts, “But these two things shall come to thee in a moment in one day, the loss of children, and widowhood: they shall come upon thee in their perfection for the multitude of thy sorceries, and for the great abundance of thine enchantments” (KJV), and Malachi 3:5 judges, “And I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against false swearers, and against those that oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and that turn aside the stranger from his right, and fear not me, saith the Lord of hosts” (KJV). The inspired pen on opening mind, “Opening mind to demonic suggestion” (The Conditionalist Faith of Our Fathers, vol. 2, p. 1150, 1966). A prophetic voice on suspension, “The suspension of rational thought and the opening of the mind to external control” (Mind, Character, and Personality, vol. 2, p. 148, 1977). The community girds minds. What do converts realize?

“Those who pass through the experience of true conversion will realize, with keenness of perception, their responsibility to God to work out their own salvation with fear and trembling,” Sr. White writes (Medical Ministry, p. 106). We cannot work out our salvation if our minds are “merged” with another. To allow oneself to be mesmerized is to commit spiritual suicide; it is to hand the keys of the temple to a stranger. Converts realize responsibility, unable to merge minds. Philippians 2:12 commands, “Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling” (KJV), and 2 Corinthians 6:17 calls, “Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you” (KJV). Through inspired counsel on merging, “No one is to merge his individuality in that of another” (Ministry of Healing, p. 242, 1905). A passage from Testimonies on passive, “Becoming a passive instrument in his hands” (Testimonies, Vol. 3, p. 184, 1872). The community works salvation separately. What obligation to neighbor?

We also bear a solemn responsibility to our neighbors. This is particularly relevant in the field of health and healing, where Mesmerism (now styled as hypnotherapy, guided visualization, or bio-energy healing) is often promoted as a benevolent tool. Responsibility to neighbors applies in healing, rejecting Mesmerism. Leviticus 19:18 commands, “Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: I am the Lord” (KJV), and Matthew 22:39 echoes, “And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself” (KJV). The inspired pen on respect, “The physician or worker has a responsibility to respect the conscience of the patient” (Testimonies, Vol. 3, p. 184, 1872). A prophetic voice on source, “He is not to look to any human being as the source of healing” (Ministry of Healing, p. 242, 1905). The community loves neighbors by respecting wills. What does Sr. White acknowledge?

Sr. White acknowledges that the mind has a powerful influence on the body. “A merry heart doeth good like a medicine” (Proverbs 17:22, KJV). She devotes an entire chapter in The Ministry of Healing to “Mind Cure,” but she draws a sharp, non-negotiable line between the “True and False Systems”. Sr. White acknowledges mind’s influence, distinguishing systems. Proverbs 17:22 repeats, “A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones” (KJV), and Psalm 51:17 notes, “The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise” (KJV). Through inspired counsel on true system, “The True System: This involves directing the patient’s mind to God, instilling hope, faith, and the peace that comes from forgiveness. It empowers the patient to use their own will to resist disease and obey the laws of health” (Ministry of Healing, p. 243, 1905). A passage from Ministry of Healing on false, “The False System (Mesmerism/Hypnosis): This involves one human mind controlling another” (Ministry of Healing, p. 243, 1905). The community uses true mind cure. What is the true system?

The True System involves directing the patient’s mind to God, instilling hope, faith, and the peace that comes from forgiveness. It empowers the patient to use their own will to resist disease and obey the laws of health. True system directs to God, empowering will. Romans 12:1 presents, “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service” (KJV), and 1 Corinthians 6:19 asks, “What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?” (KJV). The inspired pen on dependence, “His dependence must be in God” (Ministry of Healing, p. 242, 1905). A prophetic voice on nice work, “To deal with men and women whose minds as well as bodies are diseased is a nice work” (Testimonies, Vol. 3, p. 184, 1872). The community empowers through faith. What is the false system?

The False System (Mesmerism/Hypnosis) involves one human mind controlling another. “To deal with men and women whose minds as well as bodies are diseased is a nice work,” she writes (Testimonies, Vol. 3, p. 184). The physician or worker has a responsibility to respect the conscience of the patient. False system controls minds, violating conscience. Galatians 5:1 stands, “Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage” (KJV), and 2 Corinthians 3:17 declares, “Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty” (KJV). Through inspired counsel on respect, “The physician or worker has a responsibility to respect the conscience of the patient” (Testimonies, Vol. 3, p. 184, 1872). A passage from Ministry of Healing on source, “He is not to look to any human being as the source of healing” (Ministry of Healing, p. 242, 1905). The community respects consciences. What must the patient depend on?

“He is not to look to any human being as the source of healing,” Sr. White instructs regarding the patient. “His dependence must be in God”. When we use our influence to dominate the will of another—even for a “good” cause like stopping smoking or curing pain—we are trespassing on holy ground. We are taking the place of the Holy Spirit. This is a violation of the neighbor’s spiritual integrity. We must treat the sick with compassion and use rational, physiological remedies (water, herbs, diet, rest) combined with prayer. We must never resort to “charming” or “enchantment” (Deuteronomy 18:10-11, KJV) to bypass the patient’s struggle against sin or sickness. Dependence must be in God, not dominating wills. Exodus 15:26 promises, “If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the Lord thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the Lord that healeth thee” (KJV), and Psalm 103:3 praises, “Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases” (KJV). The inspired pen on compassion, “We must treat the sick with compassion and use rational, physiological remedies combined with prayer” (Ministry of Healing, p. 244, 1905). A prophetic voice on charming, “We must never resort to ‘charming’ or ‘enchantment’” (Testimonies, Vol. 5, p. 198, 1885). The community heals through God. What menace lurks modernly?

WHAT MENACE LURKS IN NEW AGE?

Mesmerism did not die. It merely changed its clothes. The “magnetic fluid” became “suggestion” under James Braid (who coined the term “hypnosis” in 1843). It became “Mind Cure” under Phineas Quimby. It became “Christian Science” under Mary Baker Eddy (who, ironically, feared “Malicious Animal Magnetism” while practicing a form of metaphysical denial that sprang from the same root). Mesmerism changed clothes, persisting in new forms. 2 Corinthians 11:14 repeats, “And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light” (KJV), and Ephesians 4:14 warns, “That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive” (KJV). Through inspired counsel on malicious magnetism, “Malicious Animal Magnetism” (Testimonies, Vol. 5, p. 199, 1885). A passage from The Great Controversy on transformation, “Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light” (The Great Controversy, p. 557, 1911). The community discerns transformed errors. What embeds in modern movements?

Today, the principles of Mesmerism are embedded in the New Age movement and much of secular psychology. We see it in:

1. Clinical Hypnotherapy: Used for addiction, trauma, and weight loss, relying on the surrender of the conscious will to the therapist’s suggestion.

2. Guided Visualization: Where a leader directs the internal imagery of the subject, often introducing “spirit guides,” “inner counselors,” or “safe places” that replace Christ as the refuge.

3. NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming): Techniques to manipulate the subconscious of others through language patterns, often used in sales, corporate training, and, sadly, charismatic preaching.

4. Charismatic Manifestations: The “slain in the spirit” phenomenon in fallen Protestantism mirrors the “crisis” of Mesmer’s baquet perfectly—falling backward, convulsions, laughter, inability to move.

This is the “wine of Babylon” creating spiritual drunkenness. The “Omega” danger warns us that in the last days, spiritualism will mimic Christianity so closely that only the elect will discern it. “The spirits of devils, working miracles” (Revelation 16:14, KJV) will go forth. If we have trained our minds to yield to “impulses,” “impressions,” or the control of others, we will be swept away. Mesmerism embeds in modern psychology and movements, warning of omega. Matthew 24:24 warns, “For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect” (KJV), and Deuteronomy 13:1-3 tests, “If there arise among you a prophet, or a dreamer of dreams, and giveth thee a sign or a wonder… Thou shalt not hearken unto the words of that prophet” (KJV). The inspired pen on mimic, “Spiritualism will mimic Christianity so closely that only the elect will discern it” (The Great Controversy, p. 591, 1911). A prophetic voice on spirits, “The spirits of devils, working miracles” (The Great Controversy, p. 624, 1911). The community discerns mimics. What cycle applies to history?

PhaseObservation (Data)Interpretation (World’s View)Evaluation (Biblical View)Conclusion (Truth)
Mesmer’s EraPatients convulse, faint, and obey commands in the baquet.“Animal Magnetism” / Physical Fluid.“Enchantment” / “Charmers” (Deut 18).Manipulation of imagination; opening to demons.
Turner’s EraWomen fall into trances, claim visions under Turner’s gaze.“Holy Ghost Power” / “New Light”.“Snake eyes” / “Spirit of Python” (Acts 16).Counterfeit prophecy; mind control.
Modern Era“Slain in Spirit”, Hypnotic Regression, Past Life recall.“Psychology” / “Subconscious Access”.“Pharmakeia” / “Seducing Spirits” (1 Tim 4).Satanic access to the citadel of the mind.

WHAT TACTICS ARM US?

How do we stand against this tide?

1. Educate: Do not be afraid to teach the history. Show the baquet. Explain the Franklin Commission. When people understand that this is a trick of the imagination and a physiological hack, the “mystique” is broken.

2. Guard the Senses: “Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life” (Proverbs 4:23, KJV). Be careful of music that bypasses the reason with repetitive, hypnotic beats. Be careful of “meditation” techniques that require emptying the mind rather than filling it with the Word.

3. Active Prayer: Prayer is not a trance. It is an active, rational communication with God. “I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also” (1 Corinthians 14:15, KJV).

4. Diet and Health: A clouded mind is a weak citadel. The emphasis on health reform is a spiritual safeguard. “Fleshly lusts, which war against the soul” (1 Peter 2:11, KJV). We stand with education, guarding, prayer, health. A distinct mind requires a pure blood stream.

2 Timothy 2:15 studies, “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth” (KJV), and Ephesians 6:13 arms, “Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand” (KJV). Through inspired counsel on education, “Do not be afraid to teach the history” (Testimonies, Vol. 5, p. 198, 1885). A passage from Ministry of Healing on prayer, “Prayer is not a trance. It is an active, rational communication with God” (Ministry of Healing, p. 225, 1905). The community arms with truth. What stand ends the epilogue?

WHAT FINAL STAND DEFENDS?

We stand on the wall as a watchman. The enemy is no longer dragging oak tubs into public squares; he has made the baquet invisible. He has woven the philosophy of Mesmer into the movies we watch, the “mindfulness” apps we download, and the “spiritual formation” of the fallen churches. The enemy weaves philosophy invisibly, requiring watchmen. Ezekiel 3:17 appoints, “Son of man, I have made thee a watchman unto the house of Israel: therefore hear the word at my mouth, and give them warning from me” (KJV), and Isaiah 62:6 sets, “I have set watchmen upon thy walls, O Jerusalem, which shall never hold their peace day nor night: ye that make mention of the Lord, keep not silence” (KJV). The inspired pen on holy ground, “The mind is the holy ground where God meets man” (Testimonies to Ministers, p. 456, 1923). A prophetic voice on duty, “To protect it is our highest duty” (Testimonies to Ministers, p. 456, 1923). The community watches diligently. What is the mind?

We must recognize that the mind is the holy ground where God meets man. To protect it is our highest duty. To surrender it is the ultimate treason. The mind serves as holy ground, demanding protection. 1 Peter 1:13 girds, “Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ” (KJV), and Colossians 3:2 sets, “Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth” (KJV). Through inspired counsel on treason, “To surrender it is the ultimate treason” (Selected Messages, Book 2, p. 349, 1958). A passage from Ministry of Healing on merging, “No one is to merge his individuality in that of another” (Ministry of Healing, p. 242, 1905). The community protects holy ground. What must we call in messages?

As we preach the Three Angels’ Messages, we must call men and women not only to keep the Sabbath of the Lord but to keep the Sabbath of the Mind—a rest from the restless currents of human philosophy and occult manipulation, finding peace only in the conscious, rational, and willing surrender to Jesus Christ. We call to Sabbath of mind, surrendering to Christ. Revelation 14:7 fears, “Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters” (KJV), and Hebrews 4:9 rests, “There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God” (KJV). The inspired pen on rest, “A life in Christ is a life of restfulness” (Mind, Character, and Personality, vol. 2, p. 289, 1977). A prophetic voice on surrender, “Finding peace only in the conscious, rational, and willing surrender to Jesus Christ” (The Desire of Ages, p. 330, 1898). The community finds rest in Christ. What converges on us now?

The warning of 1784, the struggle of 1845, and the prophecy of the Alpha and Omega all converge on us now. The magnetic tide is rising. Will you stand firm on the Rock, or will you be swept away by the fluid? “Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.” (Galatians 5:1, KJV). Warnings converge, with rising tide. Matthew 7:24-25 builds, “Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock” (KJV), and Psalm 18:2 declares, “The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower” (KJV). Through inspired counsel on liberty, “Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free” (Testimonies, Vol. 5, p. 198, 1885). A passage from The Great Controversy on elect, “If it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect” (The Great Controversy, p. 591, 1911). The community stands on the Rock.
