“And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie.” — 2 Thessalonians 2:10–11, KJV
TRUE BELIEVERS, THE FINAL CLASH!
This article delves into the climactic phases of the great controversy between Christ and Satan, examining contrasting thrones, fires, and prophetic sequences that define the end times. It underscores the immutability of God’s law, the expressions of divine love in judgment, and the imperative for personal preparation and evangelistic outreach amidst escalating deceptions. “And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.” (Revelation 12:17, KJV)
AWAKEN TO THE PRECIPICE!
Brothers and sisters, we stand at a precipice in earth’s history. The shadows are lengthening, and the din of prophetic fulfillment grows louder with each passing day. It is a time of great peril, but also of unparalleled opportunity. The final chapters of the great controversy between Christ and Satan are unfolding before our very eyes, and we, as messengers of the third angel, are called to possess a clarity of vision that can cut through the fog of confusion and deception. The prophecies of Daniel and the Revelation, those sacred roadmaps bequeathed to the final generation, are often seen as a bewildering labyrinth of symbols—beasts, horns, trumpets, and fire. Yet, they are not given to confound us, but to fortify us. Their purpose is to strip away the enemy’s camouflage, to reveal his final strategies, so that when the ultimate test comes, we will not be shaken from our foundation. This article is a humble attempt, under the guidance of the Spirit, to bring order to that sacred timeline. We will trace the thread of truth from the judgment throne in heaven to the counterfeit powers on earth. We will contrast the holy fire of God’s judicial presence with the strange fire of satanic miracles. Our mission is to equip you with a clear, biblically sound, and defensible understanding of these climactic events, so that we may stand firm and guide others to the safety of the ark before the storm breaks in its final fury. This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away (2 Timothy 3:1-5, KJV). The time of trouble, which is to increase until the end, is very near at hand. We have no time to lose. The world is stirred with the spirit of war (Last Day Events, p. 11, 1992). Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh (Matthew 24:44, KJV). The whole of the twenty-fourth chapter of Matthew is a prophecy concerning the events to precede this event, and the destruction of Jerusalem is used to typify the last great destruction of the world by fire (Last Day Events, p. 18, 1992). But how does this preparation reveal the tale of two thrones in the great cosmic counterfeit? This is not merely an academic exercise; it is a matter of eternal destiny.
TWO THRONES COLLIDE!
To grasp the enormity of the final conflict, we must lift our eyes from the chaos on earth to the solemn proceedings in heaven. The entire drama of the end times is, at its heart, a tale of two thrones—one legitimate, eternal, and founded on righteousness; the other a blasphemous, temporary usurpation built on lies. The prophet Daniel was granted a breathtaking vision of the true seat of universal government, the very throne room of the cosmos. He declared, “I beheld till the thrones were cast down, and the Ancient of days did sit, whose garment was white as snow, and the hair of his head like the pure wool: his throne was like the fiery flame, and his wheels as burning fire. A fiery stream issued and came forth from before him: thousand thousands ministered unto him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him: the judgment was set, and the books were opened.” (Daniel 7:9–10, KJV). This is not a throne of arbitrary power, but of perfect justice, where every life is reviewed with divine accuracy. It is the foundation of all reality, where, as the psalmist affirms, “Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne; Mercy and truth go before Your face.” (Psalm 89:14, KJV). Here, in this heavenly court, our great High Priest, Jesus, entered in 1844 at the close of the 2300-day prophecy to begin the final phase of His atoning work—the Investigative Judgment. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous (1 John 2:1, KJV). The subject of the sanctuary and the investigative judgment should be clearly understood by the people of God. All need a knowledge for themselves of the position and work of their great High Priest. Otherwise it will be impossible for them to exercise the faith which is essential at this time or to occupy the position which God designs them to fill (The Great Controversy, p. 488, 1911). And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission (Hebrews 9:22, KJV). The investigative judgment takes place in the courts of heaven. The lives of all His professed followers pass in review before God. All are examined according to the record of the books of heaven, and according to their deeds their destiny is forever fixed (Christ’s Object Lessons, p. 310, 1900). As Ellen G. White, a messenger of the Lord, explains, “Attended by heavenly angels, our great High Priest enters the holy of holies, and there appears in the presence of God… to perform the work of investigative judgment, and to make an atonement for all who are shown to be entitled to its benefits.” (The Great Controversy, 480). But what is the stark contrast to this heavenly reality? This heavenly work is the great original.
In stark and rebellious contrast to this heavenly reality, Satan has erected his counterfeit throne on earth. This earthly power structure is depicted in prophecy as a succession of beastly powers, each warring against God and His people. Daniel’s vision continues, revealing a “little horn” power that would “speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws.” (Daniel 7:25, KJV). The apostle John, in Revelation 13, sees this same power as a composite beast, rising from the sea, to whom “the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority.” (Revelation 13:2, KJV). The Adventist pioneers, through diligent study, rightly identified this power as the papacy, which inherited the seat of the Caesars and for 1260 years held sway. Uriah Smith, a stalwart pioneer, powerfully demonstrated the identity between Daniel’s little horn and John’s leopard beast, noting they arise at the same time, occupy the same territory, do the same work, and exist for the same duration. (Daniel and The Revelation, Uriah Smith, 524). For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light (2 Corinthians 11:13-14, KJV). That gigantic system of false religion is a masterpiece of Satan’s power—a monument of his efforts to seat himself upon the throne to rule the earth according to his will (The Great Controversy, p. 50, 1911). Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God (2 Thessalonians 2:3-4, KJV). When the early church became corrupted by departing from the simplicity of the gospel and accepting heathen rites and customs, she lost the Spirit and power of God; and in order to control the consciences of the people, she sought the support of the secular power. The result was the papacy, a church that controlled the power of the state, and employed it to further her own ends, especially for the punishment of ‘heresy (The Great Controversy, p. 443, 1911). But what unlikely alliance marks the final manifestation of this counterfeit system? This is Satan’s long-standing governmental counterfeit. As Sr. White states, “When the early church became corrupted by departing from the simplicity of the gospel and accepting heathen rites and customs, she lost the Spirit and power of God; and in order to control the consciences of the people, she sought the support of the secular power. The result was the papacy, a church that controlled the power of the state, and employed it to further her own ends, especially for the punishment of ‘heresy.’” (The Great Controversy, 443).
Yet, this counterfeit system reaches its final, global manifestation through an unlikely alliance. John beholds “another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon.” (Revelation 13:11, KJV). This power, arising in a sparsely populated area around the time the first beast received its deadly wound in 1798, is identified as the United States of America. It begins with lamblike principles of civil and religious liberty but will ultimately speak with the voice of a dragon, exercising the same coercive power as the papacy before it. Its purpose is to “causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed.” (Revelation 13:12, KJV). This is the final act in Satan’s rebellion: to create a global system of forced worship, an image to the beast, that directly opposes the worship of the Creator on His terms. The apostle Paul foretold this ultimate blasphemy, describing the “man of sin” who “opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.” (2 Thessalonians 2:4, KJV). And the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority (Revelation 13:2, KJV). The mark of the beast will be urged upon us. Those who have step by step yielded to worldly demands and conformed to worldly customs will not find it a hard matter to yield to the powers that be, rather than subject themselves to derision, insult, threatened imprisonment, and death (Last Day Events, p. 151, 1992). And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed (Revelation 13:12, KJV). In order for the United States to form an image of the beast, the religious power must so control the civil government that the authority of the state will also be employed by the church to accomplish her own ends (The Great Controversy, p. 591, 1911). But what tale of two fires reveals the divine judgment versus demonic miracle? The conflict, then, is not merely political; it is a war over the character of God and the legitimacy of His law, a final, desperate attempt by Satan to vindicate his counterfeit throne before the watching universe. As Sr. White warns, “It is Satan’s constant effort to misrepresent the character of God, the nature of sin, and the real issues at stake in the great controversy. His sophistry lessens the obligation of the divine law and gives men license to sin.” (The Great Controversy, 569).
FIRES OF TRUTH VS DECEIT!
Just as there is a true throne and a counterfeit, there is a true fire and a counterfeit. The imagery of fire is central to understanding the authority and character of God. The “fiery stream” that issues from His throne in Daniel 7 is not merely a poetic flourish; it is a symbol of His very nature. Moses described the giving of the Ten Commandments in similar terms: “from his right hand went a fiery law for them.” (Deuteronomy 33:2, KJV). This fire represents the unchangeable, holy, and just character of God expressed in His law. It is a fire that purifies the righteous and consumes the wicked. The apostle Paul captures this dual nature when he writes, “For our God is a consuming fire.” (Hebrews 12:29, KJV). This divine fire is judicial; it is an emblem of righteous judgment and absolute truth. It is the fire of the God who cannot be mocked and whose law is the eternal standard of the universe. The final judgment itself is described in terms of fire, a day when “the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.” (2 Peter 3:7, KJV). But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men (2 Peter 3:7, KJV). The symbol chosen for the representation of the Deity was a lowly shrub, that seemingly had no attractions. This enshrined the Infinite. The all-merciful God shrouded His glory in a most humble type, that Moses could look upon it and live (The Desire of Ages, p. 23, 1898). But who may abide the day of his coming? and who shall stand when he appeareth? for he is like a refiner’s fire, and like fullers’ soap (Malachi 3:2, KJV). The great day of the execution of God’s judgment seemed to have come. Ten thousand times ten thousand were assembled before a large throne (The Judgment, p. 1, 1858). But how does Satan counterfeit this divine fire for his deceptive ends? God’s fire is the awesome manifestation of His holiness and His righteous authority to judge.
Satan, the master counterfeiter, understands the power of this symbolism and seeks to usurp it for his own deceptive ends. In his final, climactic deception, he mimics this very display of divine power. John describes the work of the lamb-like beast, stating, “And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men.” (Revelation 13:13, KJV). This is not a random miracle; it is a calculated, theological forgery designed to authenticate the beast’s authority and deceive the world into accepting its claims. This act is the very fulfillment of the “lying wonders” that Paul warned would characterize the work of the Antichrist. (2 Thessalonians 2:9, KJV). It is a spectacle so convincing, so seemingly divine, that it will sweep the world into a tidal wave of false revival. For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light (2 Corinthians 11:13-14, KJV). We are approaching the end of this earth’s history, and Satan is working as never before. He is striving to act as director of the Christian world. With an intensity that is marvelous he is working with his lying wonders (Last Day Events, p. 155, 1992). Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders (2 Thessalonians 2:9, KJV). Satan can, through a species of deceptions, perform wonders that will appear to be genuine miracles. It was this he hoped to make a test question with the Israelites at the time of their deliverance from Egypt (Last Day Events, p. 156, 1992). But what is the crucial point about this counterfeit fire’s role in forcing a worldwide decision? Sr. White gives a solemn warning about the nature of this deception: “He causes fire to come down from heaven in the sight of men. He is to work miracles, and this wonderful, miracle-working power is to sweep in the whole world. This power is the last great deception of the world. The fire from heaven is to deceive the inhabitants of the earth.” (Testimonies to Ministers and Gospel Workers, 365). This is the masterstroke of the great deceiver.
The crucial point for us to understand and to teach is that this counterfeit fire is the catalyst that forces a worldwide decision. It is the great sign that validates a lie. Jesus Himself warned, “For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.” (Matthew 24:24, KJV). The fire from heaven is the apex of these signs. The world, captivated by what they see, will be led to reject the unseen truths of God’s Word. This choice—to follow sensory evidence over a “Thus saith the Lord”—is the pivotal act of rebellion that finalizes their destiny. Paul explains the divine reaction to this choice: because they “received not the love of the truth… for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie.” (2 Thessalonians 2:10-11, KJV). God does not create the delusion, but in response to their willful rejection of truth, He withdraws His restraining Spirit and allows the delusion to become total. Thus, the counterfeit fire is the cause, and the universal acceptance of the beast’s authority—the close of probation for the impenitent—is the solemn effect. Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition (2 Thessalonians 2:3, KJV). We are approaching the end of this earth’s history, and Satan is working as never before. He is striving to act as director of the Christian world. With an intensity that is marvelous he is working with his lying wonders (Last Day Events, p. 155, 1992). For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect (Matthew 24:24, KJV). The multitudes are filled with fury. “We are lost!” they cry, “and you are the cause of our ruin;” and they turn upon the false shepherds (Last Day Events, p. 177, 1992). But what prophetic sequence unravels the thread of mercy? As Sr. White clarifies, Satan’s power is in deception, not creation. She states, “The man who makes the working of miracles the test of his faith will find that Satan can, through a species of deceptions, perform wonders that will appears to be genuine miracles.” (Maranatha, 205). And again, “People are deceived by the miracles that Satan’s agents actually do, not that they only pretend to do.” (Love Under Fire, 225).
MERCY’S THREAD UNWINDS!
Understanding the correct sequence of these final events is not merely a matter of prophetic trivia; it is essential for maintaining our spiritual balance and for guiding others through the coming crisis. Misplacing these events leads to confusion, fanaticism, or despair. The Bible and the Spirit of Prophecy, however, lay out the order with divine precision. The final movements are rapid, and God’s work and Satan’s work run concurrently, each designed to bring souls to a final, irrevocable decision. The first great event in this final sequence is Satan’s master deception. As we have seen, he, through the agency of the lamb-like beast, “maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men.” (Revelation 13:13, KJV). This is the great test that polarizes the world, a powerful delusion designed to unite humanity under a banner of rebellion. For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be (Matthew 24:21, KJV). Satan is working as never before. He is striving to act as director of the Christian world. With an intensity that is marvelous he is working with his lying wonders (Last Day Events, p. 155, 1992). But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men (2 Peter 3:7, KJV). Fire from heaven is to deceive the inhabitants of the earth. These prodigies are to be more fully exhibited (Early Writings, p. 59, 1882). But what empowers God’s people in direct response to this deception? Sr. White confirms, “Fire from heaven is to deceive the inhabitants of the earth. These prodigies are to be more fully exhibited.” (Early Writings, 59). This act forces a choice, compelling every soul to decide whom they will worship and obey.
While this overwhelming deception is captivating the world, God does not leave His faithful people powerless. In direct response to Satan’s counterfeit revival, God pours out His Spirit in latter-rain power. This is the fulfillment of Joel’s prophecy: “Be glad then, ye children of Zion, and rejoice in the LORD your God: for he hath given you the former rain moderately, and he will cause to come down for you the rain, the former rain, and the latter rain.” (Joel 2:23, KJV). This outpouring empowers the church to give the third angel’s message with a loud cry, illuminating the earth with its glory. (Revelation 18:1, KJV). It is God’s final, gracious, and powerful appeal to a world on the brink of ruin. Ask ye of the LORD rain in the time of the latter rain; so the LORD shall make bright clouds, and give them showers of rain, to every one grass in the field (Zechariah 10:1, KJV). The latter rain, ripening earth’s harvest, represents the spiritual grace that prepares the church for the coming of the Son of man. But unless the former rain has fallen, there will be no life; the green blade will not spring up. Unless the early showers have done their work, the latter rain can bring no seed to perfection (Testimonies to Ministers and Gospel Workers, p. 506, 1923). And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions (Joel 2:28, KJV). The people of God have accomplished their work. They have received “the latter rain,” “the refreshing from the presence of the Lord,” and they are prepared for the trying hour before them (The Great Controversy, p. 613, 1911). But what solemn moment follows this divine empowerment? As Sr. White describes it, “At that time the ‘latter rain,’ or refreshing from the presence of the Lord, will come, to give power to the loud voice of the third angel, and prepare the saints to stand in the period when the seven last plagues shall be poured out.” (Early Writings, 86). This divine empowerment solidifies the faith of God’s people and ripens the harvest for the heavenly garner.
This brings us to the most solemn moment in the sequence: the close of probation. The work of the Loud Cry, empowered by the Latter Rain, brings every case to a decision. The righteous, having developed characters in harmony with God’s law, are sealed. John hears the command, “Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads.” (Revelation 7:3, KJV). This sealing is not a visible mark, but a settling into the truth, both intellectually and spiritually, so they cannot be moved. Once this work is complete for every soul, Christ’s work as Mediator in the heavenly sanctuary concludes. John sees this symbolized by the angel who “took the censer, and filled it with fire of the altar, and cast it into the earth.” (Revelation 8:5, KJV). At this point, mercy’s door is shut. Jesus lays off His priestly garments and utters the irrevocable decree: “He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still.” (Revelation 22:11, KJV). And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely (Revelation 21:6, KJV). God has not revealed to us the time when this message will close or when probation will have an end. Those things that are revealed we shall accept for ourselves and for our children, but let us not seek to know that which has been kept secret in the councils of the Almighty (Last Day Events, p. 227, 1992). He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels (Revelation 3:5, KJV). When the work of the investigative judgment closes, the destiny of all will have been decided for life or death. Probation is ended a short time before the appearance of the Lord in the clouds of heaven (The Great Controversy, p. 490, 1911). But what follows the finish of Christ’s intercession? Sr. White describes this moment with chilling finality: “When the third angel’s message closes, mercy no longer pleads for the guilty inhabitants of the earth… Then Jesus ceases His intercession in the sanctuary above.” (The Great Controversy, 613).
With Christ’s intercession finished, there is nothing left to hold back the full measure of divine wrath against unrepented sin. The seven last plagues, described in Revelation 16, are then poured out upon those who have received the mark of the beast. An angel is commanded, “Go your ways, and pour out the vials of the wrath of God upon the earth.” (Revelation 16:1, KJV). These are not universal, or all life would be extinguished, but they are, as Sr. White notes, “the most awful scourges ever known to mortals.” (The Great Controversy, 628). This terrible time of trouble is the direct result of humanity’s choice, a world left to the full control of Satan, from which God’s people are miraculously protected. And I saw another sign in heaven, great and marvellous, seven angels having the seven last plagues; for in them is filled up the wrath of God (Revelation 15:1, KJV). The world is soon to be left by the angel of mercy and the seven last plagues are to be poured out. The bolts of God’s wrath are soon to fall (Last Day Events, p. 245, 1992). And the first went, and poured out his vial upon the earth; and there fell a noisome and grievous sore upon the men which had the mark of the beast, and upon them which worshipped his image (Revelation 16:2, KJV). The plagues upon Egypt when God was about to deliver Israel were similar in character to those more terrible and extensive judgments which are to fall upon the world just before the final deliverance of God’s people (The Great Controversy, p. 627, 1911). But what critical distinction separates the latter rain from the casting down of the censer? The following table helps to visualize this critical sequence, contrasting God’s work with Satan’s counterfeit at each step.
| Prophetic Event | God’s Work (Heaven & The Faithful) | Satan’s Work (Earth & The Deceived) | Primary Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Final Test | The Latter Rain is poured out to empower the Loud Cry (Joel 2:23, KJV). | Satan calls down fire from heaven to deceive (Revelation 13:13, KJV). | To bring every soul to a final, unchangeable decision. |
| The Sealing | The faithful are sealed in their foreheads, their characters fixed in righteousness (Revelation 7:1-4, KJV). | The wicked receive the mark of the beast, their characters fixed in rebellion (Revelation 13:16, KJV). | To finalize the eternal destiny of every individual. |
| Close of Probation | Christ ceases His intercession; the censer is cast down (Revelation 8:5, KJV). | Satan has complete control over the impenitent. | To mark the end of mercy and the final separation. |
| Final Judgment | The seven last plagues are poured out; the righteous are protected (Revelation 16, KJV). | The wicked experience the wrath of God without mercy. | To execute judgment and eradicate sin from the universe. |
RAIN OF POWER VS CENSER FALL!
Among the most critical distinctions to master is the difference between the Latter Rain and the casting down of the censer. While they are linked in the prophetic timeline, they represent spiritually opposite moments: one is the ultimate act of empowerment for God’s people, while the other is the ultimate act of finality for the world. To confuse them is to misunderstand the very nature of God’s grace and His judgment. The Latter Rain is God’s provision for His church to complete its mission. Sr. White uses a beautiful agricultural analogy to explain its purpose: “The latter rain, ripening earth’s harvest, represents the spiritual grace that prepares the church for the coming of the Son of man. But unless the former rain has fallen, there will be no life; the green blade will not spring up. Unless the early showers have done their work, the latter rain can bring no seed to perfection.” (Testimonies to Ministers and Gospel Workers, 506). It is the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, promised in passages like Joel 2:23 and Acts 2:17, that equips the saints with unprecedented power to proclaim the final warning message. It is a gift of grace, given before probation closes, to enable the final harvest of souls. The Spirit guides God’s people “into all truth,” empowering their testimony. (John 16:13, KJV). But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth (Acts 1:8, KJV). Not All Will Receive the Latter Rain. I was shown that if God’s people make no efforts on their part, but wait for the refreshing to come upon them and remove their wrongs and correct their errors; if they depend upon that to cleanse them from filthiness of the flesh and spirit, and fit them to engage in the loud cry of the third angel, they will be found wanting (Last Day Events, p. 195, 1992). 613, 1911). But what dramatic contrast does the censer of Revelation 8 present?
In dramatic contrast, the censer of Revelation 8 symbolizes Christ’s work of mediation, and its casting down signifies the end of that work. In the earthly sanctuary service, the high priest would take a censer of burning coals from the altar and add fragrant incense, representing the prayers of the people ascending to God. Leviticus 16 describes this solemn service: “And he shall take a censer full of burning coals of fire from off the altar before the LORD, and his hands full of sweet incense beaten small, and bring it within the vail.” (Leviticus 16:12, KJV). In Revelation, John sees the antitype: “And another angel came and stood at the altar, having a golden censer; and there was given unto him much incense, that he should offer it with the prayers of all saints upon the golden altar which was before the throne.” (Revelation 8:3, KJV). This is a portrait of mercy. Christ, our High Priest, is mingling His perfect righteousness with our faltering prayers, making them acceptable to the Father. The psalmist prayed, “Let my prayer be set forth before thee as incense; and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.” (Psalm 141:2, KJV). Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them (Hebrews 7:25, KJV). The prayer of faith is the great strength of the Christian and will assuredly prevail against Satan. This is why he insinuates that we have no need of prayer (Prayer, p. 69, 2002). Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us (Romans 8:34, KJV). He intercedes in our behalf, and the Father lays open all the treasures of His grace for our appropriation, for us to enjoy and impart to others (Prayer, p. 221, 2002). But what terrifying reversal does the casting down of that censer mark? The censer is the symbol of this active, ongoing intercession.
The casting down of that same censer marks a terrifying reversal. John continues, “And the angel took the censer, and filled it with fire of the altar, and cast it into the earth: and there were voices, and thunderings, and lightnings, and an earthquake.” (Revelation 8:5, KJV). This is not an act of empowerment; it is an act of finality. The intercession has ceased. The fire from God’s altar, which once mingled with the incense of prayer to bring mercy, is now cast to the earth to signal the commencement of unmingled wrath. It is a declaration that the time for repentance is over. And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely (Revelation 21:6, KJV). When Jesus ceases to plead for man, the cases of all are forever decided… Then the restraining Spirit of God is withdrawn from the earth… The angel of mercy has taken her flight. The Saviour ceases His intercession in the sanctuary above (The Great Controversy, p. 613, 1911). He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still (Revelation 22:11, KJV). Probation closes; Christ’s intercessions cease in heaven. This time finally comes suddenly upon all, and those who have neglected to purify their souls by obeying the truth experience the outpouring of the wrath of God (Last Day Events, p. 227, 1992). But what unchanging law stands at the foundation of this prophetic drama? Therefore, the Latter Rain is the shower of grace that prepares the saints to stand, while the casting down of the censer is the signal that the destiny of the wicked is sealed. They are sequential, but they are spiritual opposites.
LAW’S ETERNAL STAND!
At the very foundation of this entire prophetic drama lies a truth as solid and enduring as God Himself: the immutability of His holy law. The final conflict is not ultimately about miracles or power politics; it is about allegiance. It is a test centered on the eternal principles of God’s government, which are a transcript of His own character. Sr. White states this principle with unmistakable clarity: “The law of God, from its very nature, is unchangeable. It is a revelation of the will and the character of its Author. God is love, and His law is love.” (The Great Controversy, 467). Because God’s character does not change, His law, which reflects that character, cannot change. The psalmist declared, “Thy word is true from the beginning: and every one of thy righteous judgments endureth for ever.” (Psalm 119:160, KJV). Jesus Himself emphatically affirmed its perpetuity, saying, “For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.” (Matthew 5:18, KJV). For I am the Lord, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed (Malachi 3:6, KJV). God’s nature, His law, is love. It ever has been; it ever will be (Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 33, 1890). Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away (Matthew 24:35, KJV). The law of God, from its very nature, is unchangeable. It is a revelation of the will and the character of its Author (The Great Controversy, p. 467, 1911). But what key feature distinguishes Satan’s final deception in his personation of Christ? This eternal, unchangeable law is the standard in the Investigative Judgment and the great dividing line in the final controversy.
This is precisely why Satan’s final deception, his personation of Christ, will have one key, distinguishing feature. While he will mimic Christ’s gentle tones and perform mighty works, he will have a different relationship with the law of God. Sr. White provides the crucial key to unlock this deception: “Disguised as an angel of light, he will walk the earth as a wonder-worker. In beautiful language he will present lofty sentiments. Good words will be spoken by him, and good deeds performed. Christ will be personified, but on one point there will be a marked distinction. Satan will turn the people from the law of God.” (Testimonies to Ministers and Gospel Workers, 62). He will present the law as a burdensome yoke, suggesting that his new reign of “love” has superseded its claims. This is the very heart of his rebellion, the same argument he has made since he first fell from heaven. The spectacular miracles, especially the fire from heaven, are a masterful misdirection. While the world is mesmerized by the visible display of power, the real test—a quiet, internal decision of allegiance to God’s unseen law—is being decided. For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light (2 Corinthians 11:13-14, KJV). Satan will appear in the glory of the Father, and claim to be Christ. Holiness will be proclaimed. The sick will be healed before us. Miracles will be performed in our sight (Last Day Events, p. 160, 1992). Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders (2 Thessalonians 2:9, KJV). As the crowning act in the great drama of deception, Satan himself will personate Christ. The church has long professed to look to the Saviour’s advent as the consummation of her hopes. Now the great deceiver will make it appear that Christ has come (The Great Controversy, p. 624, 1911). But what profound significance do the Three Angels’ Messages hold as God’s counter-message?
Herein lies the profound significance of the Three Angels’ Messages of Revelation 14. They are God’s counter-message to Satan’s deception. The first angel calls the world to “worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.” (Revelation 14:7, KJV). This is a direct quote from the fourth commandment, calling people back to worship the Creator on His holy Sabbath, the very sign of His authority. The third angel then warns against worshipping the beast and receiving his mark, and immediately identifies the saints in direct contrast: “Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.” (Revelation 14:12, KJV). The battle line could not be drawn more clearly. The final test is over worship, and true worship is defined by obedience to God’s commandments. The only safeguard against the overwhelming sensory deception of the end times is a faith that is planted firmly on the rock of God’s Word. We must heed the ancient counsel: “To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.” (Isaiah 8:20, KJV). And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people (Revelation 14:6, KJV). The third angel’s message is to be regarded as of the highest importance. It is a life and death question. The impression made by this message is to be proportionate to the truth it is so solemn and important (Advent Review and Sabbath Herald, November 15, 1864, 1864). Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters (Revelation 14:7, KJV). The first angel’s message calls for the restoration of true worship by presenting before the world Christ the Creator and Lord of the Sabbath. It is the part of the third angel’s message to reveal the mark of the beast, and its image, to show the people of God their danger, and to place the Sabbath of the Lord before them in its binding force and sacred claims (Advent Review and Sabbath Herald, January 1, 1895, 1895). But how do these concepts of judgment and probation reflect the love of a gracious God?
GRACE IN JUDGMENT’S FIRE!
How do these solemn, and at times terrifying, concepts of judgment, counterfeit fire, and the close of probation reflect the love of a gracious God? It is a question that pierces the heart, and one we must be prepared to answer with conviction. The world, and sometimes even our own people, can view these events through a lens of fear, seeing a God of wrath rather than a Father of infinite tenderness. But when we look closer, through the lens of the great controversy, we see that every step in this final drama is permeated with a love so deep it is almost incomprehensible. The Investigative Judgment itself is a profound act of love. It is not for God’s benefit—He already knows who are His. It is for the benefit of the created universe. Before all the angels and the inhabitants of unfallen worlds, God opens the books to publicly vindicate His character. He demonstrates with transparent justice and overwhelming mercy how He has dealt with every soul, silencing forever Satan’s accusations that He is a tyrant. As pioneer J. N. Andrews wrote, the judgment reveals the cases of the righteous before the advent, so that when Christ comes, His reward is with Him, a just and open verdict. (The Judgment: Its Events and Their Order, J. N. Andrews, 5). For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil (Ecclesiastes 12:14, KJV). So in the great day of final atonement and investigative judgment the only cases considered are those of the professed people of God. The judgment of the wicked is a distinct and separate work, and takes place at a later period (The Great Controversy, p. 480, 1911). But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men (2 Peter 3:7, KJV). Yet it is love alone which in the sight of Heaven makes any act of value. Whatever is done from love, however small it may appear in the estimation of men, is accepted and rewarded of God (The Great Controversy, p. 487, 1911). But what act of supreme love is the sending of the final warning messages? This is the love of a God who desires His government of love to be reaffirmed in the hearts of all His creatures.
Furthermore, the sending of the final warning messages is an act of supreme love. A truly loving God would not, could not, allow a world He died to save to stumble into the final, master deception without the clearest, most urgent, and most powerful appeal to truth. The Three Angels’ Messages are Heaven’s final love letter to a dying planet, an invitation to escape the coming storm. Even the close of probation, that most solemn of events, is an act of mercy. It is a sorrowful necessity, a loving act for the redeemed and for the entire universe. A God of love must eventually bring an end to the reign of sin, suffering, and death. He must quarantine the cancer of rebellion to ensure the eternal peace and security of those who have chosen life. His justice, which seems so severe, is the fruit of His love for a pure and holy universe. His love is not a sentimental indulgence of sin, but a holy principle that must, in the end, create a safe and eternal home for His children. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life (John 3:16, KJV). The great pains should be taken to keep this subject before the people (Fundamentals of Christian Education, p. 336, 1923). The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance (2 Peter 3:9, KJV). Render true judgments, show kindness and mercy to one another, do not oppress the widow, the fatherless, the sojourner, or the poor, and let none of you devise evil against another in your heart (Zechariah 7:9-10, KJV). But what is my personal responsibility to God in light of these truths? Sr.White beautifully captures this boundless love, writing, “All the paternal love which has come down from generation to generation through the channel of human hearts… are but as a tiny rill to the boundless ocean when compared with the infinite, exhaustless love of God. Tongue cannot utter it; pen cannot portray it… You may study that love for ages, and yet you can never fully comprehend the length and breadth and depth and height, of the love of God.” (“The Love of God,” Signs of the Times, July 13, 1904).
OUR SACRED DUTY CALLS!
In light of these earth-shaking truths, what then is my personal responsibility to God? The knowledge of these things must not be a source of pride or a mere intellectual trophy. It must drive me to my knees in humble preparation. My first and foremost duty is to ensure that my own life is in harmony with the truths I profess. Am I daily fortifying my mind with the study of God’s Word? Am I seeking the righteousness of Christ, who is my only Advocate in the judgment? The pioneer J. N. Andrews rightly taught that Christ is our High Priest in the heavenly sanctuary, and it is only by claiming His merits that any of us can stand. (The Judgment: Its Events and Their Order, J. N. Andrews, 27). This is not a time for spiritual lethargy or half-hearted service. I must make my “calling and election sure,” not through my own strength, but by a daily surrender to the sanctifying power of the Holy Spirit. I must examine my own heart, allowing the searchlight of God’s law to reveal every hidden sin, every cherished idol, so that they may be confessed and forsaken while the blood of Jesus is still pleading in the sanctuary above. Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh (Matthew 24:44, KJV). The period of probation is granted to all to prepare for that time. Jacob prevailed because he was persevering and determined. His victory is an evidence of the power of importunate prayer (The Great Controversy, p. 621, 1911). Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth (2 Timothy 2:15, KJV). We are to make the best of our present opportunities. There will be no other probation given to us in which to prepare for heaven (Last Day Events, p. 236, 1992). But what motivation does knowing the judgment inspire for a deeper relationship? This personal preparation is not a work of fear, but of faith and love.
Knowing that the judgment is taking place now should not paralyze me with terror, but motivate me to a deeper relationship with my Savior. It is a call to live soberly and faithfully, as the Lord Himself warned: “And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares.” (Luke 21:34, KJV). I must constantly remember that my character is being weighed in the balances of the sanctuary. Therefore, I must pray for the former and the latter rain, for the spiritual grace needed to perfect a character in the likeness of Christ. My responsibility is to be a living demonstration of the truth, so that my life, and not just my lips, bears witness to the power of the gospel. The decisive hour is upon us, and my only safety lies in having my feet planted immovably on the rock of God’s Word. As Sr. White so powerfully stated, “None but those who have fortified the mind with the truths of the Bible will stand through the last great conflict. To every soul will come the searching test: Shall I obey God rather than men? The decisive hour is even now at hand. Are our feet planted on the rock of God’s immutable word?” (The Great Controversy, 593-594). But let us watch and be sober (1 Thessalonians 5:6, KJV). The season of distress and anguish before us will require a faith that can endure weariness, delay, and hunger—a faith that will not faint, though severely tried (The Great Controversy, p. 621, 1911). Be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life (Revelation 2:10, KJV). We are in the shaking time, the time when everything that can be shaken will be shaken. The Lord will not excuse those who know the truth if they do not in word and deed obey His commands (Last Day Events, p. 215, 1992). But what sacred responsibility does this place upon us toward our neighbors?
WARN THE WORLD WITH LOVE!
Understanding these solemn truths places upon us a sacred and unavoidable responsibility toward our neighbors. We cannot possess this light and hide it under a bushel. To do so would be the cruelest form of selfishness. If we truly love our neighbors, we must act as faithful watchmen on the walls of Zion, warning them of the coming danger and pointing them to the only way of escape. This is the very essence of the gospel commission in these last days. Our duty is to carry the Three Angels’ Messages to every nation, kindred, tongue, and people, not as a message of condemnation, but as a message of loving rescue. We are to show them the difference between the true and the counterfeit, between the seal of God and the mark of the beast, between the worship of the Creator and the worship of a human power. The apostle Paul felt this burden, declaring, “For though I preach the gospel, I have nothing to glory of: for necessity is laid upon me; yea, woe is unto me, if I preach not the gospel!” (1 Corinthians 9:16, KJV). That same necessity rests upon us today. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost (Matthew 28:19, KJV). The third angel’s message is to be regarded as of the highest importance. It is a life and death question. The impression made by this message is to be proportionate to the truth it is so solemn and important (Advent Review and Sabbath Herald, November 15, 1864, 1864). And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature (Mark 16:15, KJV). God has a distinct people, a church on earth, second to none, but superior to all in their facilities to teach the truth, to vindicate the law of God (Last Day Events, p. 55, 1992). But what spirit must guide this work?
This work, however, must be done in the spirit of Christ. It is not enough to simply denounce error; we must win hearts. Our approach must be one of tender compassion and personal interest. We must weep for the souls who are entangled in the deceptions of Babylon, just as Christ wept over Jerusalem. The most effective way to reach them is not through harsh debate, but through loving, personal labor. We must earn their trust, sympathize with their struggles, and pray for their salvation. The Lord Himself has given us the blueprint for this work. He said, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised.” (Luke 4:18, KJV). This is our mission. We are to be agents of healing and liberation, opening blind eyes to the beauty of the truth. And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you (Ephesians 4:32, KJV). Go to your neighbors one by one, and come close to them till their hearts are warmed by your unselfish interest and love. Sympathize with them, pray for them, watch for opportunities to do them good, and as you can, gather a few together and open the Word of God to their darkened minds (The Review and Herald, January 1, 1895, 1895). But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil (Luke 6:35, KJV). The minister should at first seek not so much to convert unbelievers, as to train the church members for acceptable co-operation (Evangelism, p. 353, 1946). But what resounding clarity echoes through the solemn prophecies we’ve journeyed? Sr. White gives this inspired counsel, which should be the motto of every: “Go to your neighbors one by one, and come close to them till their hearts are warmed by your unselfish interest and love. Sympathize with them, pray for them, watch for opportunities to do them good, and as you can, gather a few together and open the Word of God to their darkened minds.” (The Review and Herald, January 1, 1895). This is love in action, the highest fulfillment of our duty to our neighbor.
STAND FIRM, REDEMPTION NEARS!
We have journeyed through some of the most solemn prophecies of God’s Word. We have stood in awe before the fiery throne of the Ancient of Days and recoiled from the blasphemous counterfeit erected by the beast. We have contrasted the holy, judicial fire of God’s presence with the strange, deceptive fire of satanic miracles. We have carefully untangled the prophetic timeline, distinguishing the empowering Latter Rain from the finality of the censer cast down. Through it all, one central theme has echoed with resounding clarity: the final conflict is a battle over worship, a universal test of allegiance to the character and the law of God. Satan’s strategy is deception, culminating in a spectacular visual wonder designed to mislead the world. God’s safeguard is His unchanging Word, and His provision is the power of His Spirit. And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death (Revelation 12:11, KJV). The eye of God, looking down the ages, was fixed upon the crisis which His people are to meet, when earthly powers shall be arrayed against them (The Great Controversy, p. 591, 1911). And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ (Revelation 12:17, KJV). The great controversy is ended. Sin and sinners are no more. The entire universe is clean. One pulse of harmony and gladness beats through the vast creation (The Great Controversy, p. 678, 1911).
Let us, therefore, take these truths to heart. Let us study them, pray over them, and live them. Let us not be among those who are shaken and swept away by the overwhelming delusions of the last days. Instead, let us be anchored to the eternal rock. The path ahead will not be easy. It will require sacrifice, patience, and a faith that can withstand the fiercest opposition. But we do not walk this path alone. The same Jesus who is our Advocate in the judgment is our Captain in the battle. His victory is assured, and His coming is near. Let us then rise to our sacred duty, both in personal preparation and in earnest labor for others. Let us stand firm, with our eyes fixed on Jesus, knowing that the darkest hour comes just before the dawn. Be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life (Revelation 2:10, KJV). The season of distress and anguish before us will require a faith that can endure weariness, delay, and hunger—a faith that will not faint, though severely tried (The Great Controversy, p. 621, 1911). Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand (Ephesians 6:13, KJV). We are in the shaking time, the time when everything that can be shaken will be shaken. The Lord will not excuse those who know the truth if they do not in word and deed obey His commands (Last Day Events, p. 215, 1992). And when you see these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh. Amen.
