“And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.” (Revelation 21:3 KJV)
ABSTRACT
In a world marred by pervasive suffering, decay, and death rooted in humanity’s spiritual fracture through sin, as depicted in Scripture and elaborated by Ellen G. White, an innate yearning for perfection echoes the lost paradise of Eden, pointing to God’s unchanging blueprint for intimate fellowship, righteousness, and eternal life. Despite Satan’s distortions and the inadequacy of human solutions, God’s redemptive plan unfolds through Christ’s sacrifice, restoring creation in the cosmic battle between good and evil, culminating in a tangible New Earth free from sin’s curse—where death, sorrow, and pain vanish, the dazzling New Jerusalem descends as the divine metropolis, the redeemed inherit glorified, tangible bodies akin to Christ’s resurrected form, and eternity brims with purposeful activities like building, planting, and joyful reunions. This restoration vindicates God’s character of self-sacrificing love, calling believers to respond with faith, obedience, holiness, and neighborly love while living as pilgrims between worlds, ultimately inviting all to embrace the promise of face-to-face communion with God in an undefiled inheritance reserved for the faithful.
ADRIFT IN A FALLEN WORLD
We find ourselves, individually and collectively, grappling with the undeniable weight of a world that is fundamentally not right. Suffering isn’t an anomaly; it’s a pervasive reality. Decay and death are not distant threats but intimate companions on our journey. The Bible acknowledges this universal experience with unflinching honesty: “For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now.” (Romans 8:22 KJV). This groaning echoes in the hospital wards, the broken homes, the battlefields, and the quiet anxieties of sleepless nights. Despite astonishing technological leaps and societal advancements, the core issues persist. We build taller skyscrapers, but loneliness burrows deeper. We develop miracle cures, yet new diseases emerge, and the specter of death remains undefeated. Crime, injustice, and the insidious tendrils of selfishness continue to poison human relationships. Why? Because the root problem isn’t environmental or technological; it’s spiritual. “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” (Romans 6:23 KJV). Sin fractured our relationship with God and corrupted our very nature. As Sr. White powerfully states, “When man transgressed the divine law, his nature became evil, and he was in harmony, and not at variance, with Satan.” (The Great Controversy, p. 505, 1911). This inherent inclination towards evil explains why changing our location cannot solve our deepest problems. We carry the seeds of our own sorrow within us. Human wisdom and strength, divorced from their divine source, prove inadequate. The Bible reinforces this truth: “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” (Jeremiah 17:9 KJV). Only divine intervention can heal this condition. Further, Scripture warns, “There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.” (Proverbs 14:12 KJV). Human solutions falter without God. Sr. White elaborates, “Satan has represented God as selfish and oppressive… It is Satan’s constant effort to misrepresent the character of God, the nature of sin, and the real issues at stake in the great controversy.” (The Great Controversy, p. 492, 1911). She adds, “Man’s intellect, if unaided by divine power, is incapable of understanding the things of God.” (Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 73, 1890). The inherent limitations of our fallen state point insistently towards the necessity of a divine solution.
AN ECHO OF LOST EDEN
Yet, amidst this pervasive brokenness, something else stirs within the human spirit: an inextinguishable yearning for perfection, peace, justice, and permanence. It’s an ache for a world without tears, a life without end, a home where we truly belong. Where does this desire come from? The Scriptures reveal it as an echo of Eden, a divinely implanted memory of the paradise we lost. “For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.” (Hebrews 11:10 KJV). Abraham’s gaze fixed on an eternal reality. This desire characterizes all true people of faith: “But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city.” (Hebrews 11:16 KJV). God’s preparation meets this longing. The Bible affirms, “Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.” (Psalm 37:4 KJV). Our yearning finds its source in God’s design: “For the LORD hath chosen Jacob unto himself, and Israel for his peculiar treasure.” (Psalm 135:4 KJV). Sr. White explains, “God does not require us to give up anything that it is for our best interest to retain… The path of transgression is the path of misery and destruction.” (Steps to Christ, p. 46, 1892). She further notes, “The heart that rests most fully upon Christ will be most earnest and active in labor for Him.” (Steps to Christ, p. 71, 1892). This God-given desire differentiates Christian hope from escapism, pointing us toward God’s perfect purpose. Why does this longing persist despite our fallen state?
GOD’S UNCHANGED BLUEPRINT
To grasp our future hope, we must return to the beginning. God’s plan for humanity was woven into creation itself. The Garden of Eden revealed His eternal intention: intimate fellowship (“And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day” – Genesis 3:8 KJV), a righteous nature (“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him” – Genesis 1:27 KJV), stewardship over a perfect world (“And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it” – Genesis 1:28 KJV), and unending life. “And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good.” (Genesis 1:31 KJV). The Bible adds, “The earth is the LORD’s, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.” (Psalm 24:1 KJV). God’s care is evident: “The LORD is good to all: and his tender mercies are over all his works.” (Psalm 145:9 KJV). Sr. White describes, “In the beginning, God was revealed in all the works of creation… He wrote the message of the Father’s love.” (The Desire of Ages, p. 20, 1898). She adds, “The earth was to be the home of man, created in the image of God.” (Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 44, 1890). Sin interrupted this plan, but it did not alter God’s purpose. The New Earth is the restoration of this blueprint through Christ’s sacrifice. How does this restoration unfold in the cosmic battle?
PARADISE LOST, PARADISE REGAINED
Sin cast a shadow over God’s creation. Disobedience introduced alienation, suffering, and death: “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:” (Romans 5:12 KJV). Satan became “the god of this world” (2 Corinthians 4:4 KJV). Yet, God’s love anticipated this tragedy. “For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead.” (1 Corinthians 15:21 KJV). Revelation promises, “And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new.” (Revelation 21:5 KJV). The Bible assures, “The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death.” (1 Corinthians 15:26 KJV). Scripture also declares, “And I will destroy in this mountain the face of the covering cast over all people, and the vail that is spread over all nations.” (Isaiah 25:7 KJV). Sr. White states, “Satan’s enmity against Christ has been manifested against His followers… his endeavors to set aside the divine law.” (The Great Controversy, p. x, 1911). She adds, “The plan of redemption will not only restore man to his original state, but will place him on a higher plane.” (Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 67, 1890). This restoration vindicates God’s character against Satan’s lies. What will this renewed world look like?
A TANGIBLE INHERITANCE
The eternal home of the redeemed is this Earth, restored to Edenic splendor. Jesus declared, “Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.” (Matthew 5:5 KJV). Scripture confirms, “For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind.” (Isaiah 65:17 KJV). The Bible adds, “The heaven, even the heavens, are the LORD’s: but the earth hath he given to the children of men.” (Psalm 115:16 KJV). Further, “The upright shall dwell in the land, and the perfect shall remain in it.” (Proverbs 2:21 KJV). Sr. White underscores, “Our little world is the lesson book of the universe… the mystery of redeeming love.” (The Desire of Ages, p. 19, 1898). She notes, “The earth originally given to man as his kingdom… will be restored.” (The Great Controversy, p. 674, 1911). This tangible inheritance anchors our hope in restoration, not escape. What city will crown this renewed Earth?
THE DAZZLING METROPOLIS
At the heart of the New Earth stands the New Jerusalem, a literal city of splendor. “And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.” (Revelation 21:2 KJV). Its scale is vast: “And the city lieth foursquare… twelve thousand furlongs.” (Revelation 21:16 KJV). Its materials dazzle: “And the building of the wall of it was of jasper: and the city was pure gold, like unto clear glass.” (Revelation 21:18 KJV). Scripture adds, “And the city had no need of the sun… for the glory of God did lighten it.” (Revelation 21:23 KJV). The Bible also states, “And the nations of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it.” (Revelation 21:24 KJV). Sr. White writes, “There is the city of God… its streets of pure gold.” (The Great Controversy, p. 674, 1911). She adds, “The city of God is built as a habitation for the redeemed.” (Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 64, 1890). This city is the epicenter of God’s kingdom. What form will we take in this city?
FASHIONED LIKE HIS GLORIOUS BODY
The redeemed will inhabit the New Earth with transformed bodies. “Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body.” (Philippians 3:21 KJV). Jesus’ resurrected body was tangible: “Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have.” (Luke 24:39 KJV). Scripture assures, “But we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.” (1 John 3:2 KJV). The Bible adds, “And as we have borne the image of the earthy, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly.” (1 Corinthians 15:49 KJV). Sr. White confirms, “The resurrection of Jesus was a type of the final resurrection of all who sleep in Him.” (The Desire of Ages, p. 786, 1898). She notes, “The mortal, corruptible form… is changed for the immortal.” (The Great Controversy, p. 645, 1911). We will retain our identities, perfected. What will we do for eternity?
BUILDING AND PLANTING ANEW
Eternity will be vibrant with activity and relationships. “And they shall build houses, and inhabit them; and they shall plant vineyards, and eat the fruit of them.” (Isaiah 65:21-22 KJV). Fellowship will thrive: “And I say unto you, That many shall come from the east and west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 8:11 KJV). Scripture adds, “And the ransomed of the LORD shall return, and come to Zion with songs and everlasting joy.” (Isaiah 35:10 KJV). The Bible also states, “For ye shall go out with joy, and be led forth with peace.” (Isaiah 55:12 KJV). Sr. White envisions, “The loves and sympathies which God Himself has planted in the soul shall there find truest exercise.” (The Great Controversy, p. 677, 1911). She adds, “There, immortal minds will contemplate with never-failing delight the wonders of creative power.” (The Great Controversy, p. 677, 1911). The New Earth will pulse with purpose and joy. How will the curse of sin be undone?
WHERE SORROW AND DEATH FLEE AWAY
The New Earth will see sin and its consequences eradicated. “And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain.” (Revelation 21:4 KJV). Scripture promises, “And the inhabitant shall not say, I am sick: the people that dwell therein shall be forgiven their iniquity.” (Isaiah 33:24 KJV). The Bible adds, “The LORD will take away from thee all sickness.” (Deuteronomy 7:15 KJV). Further, “And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light.” (Revelation 22:5 KJV). Sr. White writes, “There will be no more tears, no funeral trains, no badges of mourning.” (The Great Controversy, p. 676, 1911). She notes, “The great controversy is ended. Sin and sinners are no more.” (The Great Controversy, p. 678, 1911). This freedom fulfills God’s restorative plan. How does this reflect God’s love?
LOVE THAT REBUILDS A WORLD
This restoration reflects God’s active, self-sacrificing love. “Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.” (1 John 4:10 KJV). Paul notes, “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8 KJV). The Bible adds, “The LORD hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love.” (Jeremiah 31:3 KJV). Scripture states, “In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.” (1 John 4:9 KJV). Sr. White articulates, “The gift of Christ reveals the Father’s heart… His love for the sinner is stronger than death.” (The Desire of Ages, p. 57, 1898). She adds, “Only by love is love awakened.” (The Desire of Ages, p. 22, 1898). This love invites us into eternal fellowship. What is our response to this love?
CITIZENSHIP PAPERS FOR ETERNITY
Our responsibility flows from God’s grace, manifesting in faith and obedience. “Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:” (Hebrews 12:14 KJV). Jesus said, “If ye love me, keep my commandments.” (John 14:15 KJV). Scripture adds, “But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.” (Matthew 24:13 KJV). The Bible states, “Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life.” (Revelation 22:14 KJV). Sr. White writes, “Those who would share the benefits of the Saviour’s mediation should permit nothing to interfere with their duty to perfect holiness.” (The Great Controversy, p. 488, 1911). She adds, “All who have received the light upon these subjects are to bear testimony of the great truths.” (The Great Controversy, p. 488, 1911). Our response prepares us for heaven. How do we extend this hope to others?
THE ROYAL LAW IN ACTION
Love for God demands love for neighbor. “A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.” (John 13:34 KJV). James calls it the “royal law”: “If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well:” (James 2:8 KJV). Scripture adds, “Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.” (Galatians 6:2 KJV). The Bible states, “And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.” (Luke 6:31 KJV). Sr. White emphasizes, “Love is power… which lives and flourishes only where Christ reigns.” (Testimonies for the Church, vol. 2, p. 135, 1868). She notes, “The law of God is the standard of true love.” (Thoughts from the Mount of Blessing, p. 50, 1896). This love marks us as disciples. How does this hope shape our lives now?
LIVING BETWEEN TWO WORLDS
We live as “strangers and pilgrims on the earth” (Hebrews 11:13 KJV), yet this hope fuels our earthly mission. “But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly.” (Hebrews 11:16 KJV). Scripture adds, “Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.” (Colossians 3:2 KJV). The Bible states, “For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour.” (Philippians 3:20 KJV). Sr. White warns, “Through love of riches and worldly honor he has a bewitching power to gain the affections.” (Testimonies for the Church, vol. 1, p. 141, 1868). She adds, “The life of the true believer reveals an indwelling Saviour.” (Testimonies for the Church, vol. 5, p. 171, 1882). This hope transforms our priorities and actions. What is the ultimate joy of heaven?
THE ULTIMATE REUNION
The supreme joy of heaven is seeing God face to face. “And they shall see his face; and his name shall be in their foreheads.” (Revelation 22:4 KJV). Paul anticipates, “For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face.” (1 Corinthians 13:12 KJV). Scripture adds, “And they shall reign for ever and ever.” (Revelation 22:5 KJV). The Bible states, “Thine eyes shall see the king in his beauty: they shall behold the land that is very far off.” (Isaiah 33:17 KJV). Sr. White writes, “Both the redeemed and the unfallen beings will find in the cross of Christ their science and their song.” (The Desire of Ages, p. 19, 1898). She notes, “The redeemed will meet and recognize those whose attention they have directed to the uplifted Saviour.” (The Great Controversy, p. 678, 1911). This fellowship is heaven’s heart. Will you accept the invitation?
THE INVITATION STANDS
Heaven and the New Earth are real, the fulfillment of God’s plan. “In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began;” (Titus 1:2 KJV). Scripture affirms, “And this is the promise that he hath promised us, even eternal life.” (1 John 2:25 KJV). The Bible adds, “To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you.” (1 Peter 1:4 KJV). Sr. White declares, “The city of God will be the eternal home of the redeemed.” (Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 64, 1890). She adds, “The great plan of redemption results in fully bringing back the world into God’s favor.” (Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 342, 1890). Citizenship requires faith, surrender, and transformation. The gates of pearl await. Will you be there?
