“So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.” — Hebrews 9:28 (KJV)
ABSTRACT
This article delves into the profound biblical promises and details of Jesus Christ’s Second Coming, presenting it as the ultimate hope amid worldly chaos. It examines the event’s certainty rooted in Scripture, its literal and visible manner accompanied by heavenly hosts, the global transformation it brings—including resurrection for the righteous and judgment for the wicked—and the prophetic signs signaling its imminence in these last days. Emphasizing preparation through faith, surrender to Christ, and sharing the gospel, the piece inspires the community to live vigilantly, reflecting God’s love and grace in anticipation of eternal redemption. “Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ” (Titus 2:13, KJV).
CHRIST’S THRILLING RETURN!
In a world gripped by hurt, hunger, loneliness, crime, and chaos, humanity yearns for a true and lasting escape. Amid the clamor for solutions from earthly leaders and technological advancements, the promise of Jesus Christ’s return stands as the ultimate beacon of hope. This is no mere fable, but the most extraordinary and comforting assurance ever given. The deliverer is not a charismatic world leader, but the King of kings, Jesus Christ, who is coming soon. However, numerous misconceptions surround this pivotal event, making it crucial to understand what the Bible truly reveals about the Second Coming, lest anyone be found unprepared. This truth about Christ’s imminent return will shine brighter as we explore its certainty in the sacred Scriptures. The Bible supports this hope with promises like “And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be” (Revelation 22:12, KJV) and “Behold, I come quickly: blessed is he that keepeth the sayings of the prophecy of this book” (Revelation 22:7, KJV). Ellen G. White affirms this, stating, “The Lord is coming. We hear the footsteps of an approaching God, as He comes to punish the world for its iniquity. We are to prepare the way for Him by acting our part in getting a people ready for that great day” (Evangelism, p. 217, 1946). She further emphasizes, “Our Lord is now testing us, to see whether we will be loyal to the truth. He will soon come to our deliverance, if we wait for Him patiently” (This Day With God, p. 348, 1979). The community finds profound encouragement in these assurances. What certainty does the Bible provide about Christ’s return?
SURE RETURN GUARANTEED!
Jesus’ return stands firm, not open to speculation, as a truth rooted in the sacred Scriptures. The apostle Paul states, “Christ … will appear a second time” (Hebrews 9:28, KJV). Jesus assures the community, “If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again” (John 14:3, KJV). The integrity of God’s Word guarantees this promise, for the Scripture “cannot be broken” (John 10:35, KJV). Sr. White affirms this steadfastness, declaring, “The voice that spoke from Sinai, still declares, ‘Thou shalt’ and ‘Thou shalt not.’ It is the voice of God to His people” (Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 305, 1890). The reliability of God’s promises provides unshakable confidence in Christ’s return. Scriptures support this with “For yet a little while, and he that shall come will come, and will not tarry” (Hebrews 10:37, KJV) and “Be ye also patient; stablish your hearts: for the coming of the Lord draweth nigh” (James 5:8, KJV). Sr. White declares, “The Lord is coming. The scenes of the judgment and the scenes of the advent are near, even at our doors” (Review and Herald, November 12, 1914). She adds, “We are living in the time of the end. The fast-fulfilling signs of the times declare that the coming of Christ is near at hand” (Testimonies for the Church, vol. 9, p. 11, 1909). The community gains assurance from these truths. Just as the prophecies concerning Christ’s first coming fulfilled with meticulous accuracy, the community has absolute confidence in the fulfillment of the prophecies regarding His second advent. What manner marks Christ’s return?
HERO’S DRAMATIC DESCENT!
Christ’s return unfolds as literal and visible as His departure. As the disciples watched Him ascend, angels declared, “This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven” (Acts 1:9–11, KJV). This manifests as a glorious event in the heavens. The Scriptures promise, “They will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory” (Matthew 24:30, KJV). Sr. White provides a vivid picture of this celestial scene: “With anthems of celestial melody the holy angels, a vast, unnumbered throng, attend Him on His way. The firmament seems filled with radiant forms—’ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands’” (The Great Controversy, p. 641, 1911). The glory of this event affirms with “For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels” (Matthew 16:27, KJV), and “And then shall they see the Son of man coming in the clouds with great power and glory” (Mark 13:26, KJV). Scriptures support this with “Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen” (Revelation 1:7, KJV) and “Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven” (Matthew 10:32, KJV). Sr. White states, “The Lord Jesus will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the Archangel, and with the trump of God” (The Signs of the Times, April 22, 1889). She adds, “Christ is coming with clouds and with great glory. A multitude of shining angels will attend Him” (The Great Controversy, p. 640, 1911). The community anticipates this glorious manifestation. This return presents a personal appearance of Christ, with a tangible body, just as He appeared after His resurrection (Luke 24:36–43, 50, 51, KJV). What universal visibility defines Christ’s coming?
GLOBAL GLORY REVEALED!
The Second Coming of Christ unfolds as a global spectacle visible to every living soul. The apostle John declares, “Behold, He is coming with clouds, and every eye will see Him” (Revelation 1:7, KJV). Jesus describes the unmistakable nature of this event, stating, “As the lightning comes from the east and flashes to the west, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be” (Matthew 24:27, KJV). This all-encompassing brilliance stretches from horizon to horizon, leaving no place to hide. The Lord Himself “will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first” (1 Thessalonians 4:16, KJV). This powerful and dramatic event awakens even those who sleep in the dust. Theories suggesting a “secret rapture” where the saved disappear quietly contradict the very essence of these verses and the sheer magnitude of the promised return. Sr. White clarifies, “The coming of the Lord is to be in a manner altogether different from that which the world imagines” (The Desire of Ages, p. 632, 1898). The event’s grandeur affirms with “The Lord shall cause his glorious voice to be heard” (Isaiah 30:30, KJV), and “All that are in the graves shall hear his voice” (John 5:28, KJV). Scriptures support this with “For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be” (Matthew 24:27, KJV) and “And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory” (Matthew 24:30, KJV). Sr. White states, “Jesus rides forth as a mighty conqueror. Not now a ‘Man of Sorrows,’ to drink the bitter cup of shame and woe, He comes, victor in heaven and earth, to judge the living and the dead” (The Great Controversy, p. 641, 1911). She adds, “The whole earth heaves and swells like the waves of the sea. Its surface is breaking up. Its very foundations seem to be giving way” (The Great Controversy, p. 637, 1911). The community recognizes no one misses this event. What heavenly host accompanies Christ?
ANGEL ARMY ARRIVES!
Christ’s return unfolds with the entire host of heaven. Scripture states, “When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the holy angels with Him” (Matthew 25:31, KJV). As the glorious cloud draws near to the earth, Jesus dispatches His angels, and “He shall send His angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they will gather together His elect” (Matthew 24:31, KJV). Sr. White affirms this promise: “He sends His angels to gather together the elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other” (The Great Controversy, p. 645, 1911). The angelic presence confirms with “The chariots of God are twenty thousand, even thousands of angels” (Psalm 68:17, KJV), and “An innumerable company of angels” (Hebrews 12:22, KJV). Scriptures support this with “And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other” (Matthew 24:31, KJV) and “Who maketh his angels spirits; his ministers a flaming fire” (Psalm 104:4, KJV). Sr. White states, “The heavenly sentinels, faithful to their trust, continue their watch. Though a general decree has fixed the time when commandment keepers may be put to death, their enemies will in some cases anticipate the decree, and before the time specified, will endeavor to take their lives” (The Great Controversy, p. 631, 1911). She adds, “Angels are now restraining the winds of strife, that they may not blow until the world shall be warned of its coming doom” (Education, p. 179, 1903). The community rejoices in this heavenly cavalry descending to execute a loving mission of rescue for God’s faithful people. What purpose drives Christ’s return?
SALVATION MISSION UNFOLDS!
Jesus’ Second Coming centers on the salvation and gathering of His people. He declares, “Behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to give to every one according to his work” (Revelation 22:12, KJV). This reward signifies the culmination of His promises and the inheritance prepared for the faithful. Jesus assures, “I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also” (John 14:3, KJV). The Scriptures reveal that Christ’s ascension was a necessary step, for “heaven must receive Him until the times of restoration of all things” (Acts 3:20, 21, KJV). His return links to the ultimate restoration and redemption of all lost through sin. Scriptures affirm with “The Lord shall give thee rest from thy sorrow” (Isaiah 14:3, KJV), and “He shall redeem their soul from deceit and violence” (Psalm 72:14, KJV). Scriptures support this with “And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away” (Revelation 21:4, KJV) and “For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes” (Revelation 7:17, KJV). Sr. White states, “Christ is coming to establish His kingdom on the earth. He will come with power and great glory, and will take vengeance on them that know not God and obey not the gospel” (Review and Herald, November 13, 1913). She adds, “The object of Christ’s departure was the opposite of what the disciples feared. It did not mean a final separation. He was going to prepare a place for them, that He might come again and receive them unto Himself” (The Desire of Ages, p. 662, 1898). The community embraces how Christ’s return fulfills God’s plan of redemption. What glorious transformation awaits the righteous at Christ’s coming?
RIGHTEOUS RISE RENEWED!
Upon Christ’s return, a glorious transformation awaits the righteous. The Scriptures declare, “The Lord Himself will descend from heaven … and the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord” (1 Thessalonians 4:16, 17, KJV). This resurrection accompanies a complete change, for “we shall all be changed … and the dead will be raised incorruptible. For … this mortal must put on immortality” (1 Corinthians 15:51–53, KJV). Even those alive at His coming change, as “the Lord Jesus Christ … will transform our lowly body that it may be conformed to His glorious body” (Philippians 3:20, 21, KJV). Sr. White describes this breathtaking moment: “The living righteous are changed in a moment… and with the risen saints are caught up to meet their Lord in the air” (The Great Controversy, p. 645, 1911). Supporting verses include “The righteous shall be glad in the Lord” (Psalm 64:10, KJV), and “The Lord will preserve him, and keep him alive” (Psalm 41:2, KJV). Scriptures support this with “Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed” (1 Corinthians 15:51, KJV) and “Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself” (Philippians 3:21, KJV). Sr. White states, “The trumpet will sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed” (The Signs of the Times, June 18, 1885). She adds, “At the voice of God they were glorified; now they are made immortal and with the risen saints are caught up to meet their Lord in the air” (The Great Controversy, p. 645, 1911). The community notes that Jesus does not touch the earth at this point; the saints meet Him “in the air,” safeguarding God’s people from any deception claiming Christ’s earthly appearance. What fate befalls the wicked at Christ’s coming?
WICKED FACE DOOM!
In stark contrast to the glorious reception of the righteous, a different fate awaits those who rebelliously cling to sin when Jesus appears. The Scriptures forewarn, “With the breath of His lips He shall slay the wicked” (Isaiah 11:4, KJV). The impact of His glorious presence overwhelms so that “at that day the slain of the Lord shall be from one end of the earth even to the other end of the earth” (Jeremiah 25:33, KJV). This day brings liberation for the faithful and ruin for the unrepentant. Sr. White writes: “When the voice of God turns the captivity of His people, there is a terrible awakening of those who have lost all in the great conflict of life” (The Great Controversy, p. 653, 1911). Scriptures declare “The Lord shall destroy the sinners” (Isaiah 13:9, KJV), and “The wicked shall be cut off from the earth” (Proverbs 2:22, KJV). Scriptures support this with “And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming” (2 Thessalonians 2:8, KJV) and “But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up” (2 Peter 3:10, KJV). Sr. White states, “The wicked pray to be buried beneath the rocks of the mountains rather than meet the face of Him whom they have despised and rejected” (The Great Controversy, p. 642, 1911). She adds, “That voice which penetrates the ear of the dead, they know. How often have its plaintive, tender tones called them to repentance. How often has it been heard in the touching entreaties of a friend, a brother, a Redeemer” (The Great Controversy, p. 642, 1911). The community sees the sheer brilliance of Christ’s coming as a consuming fire to those who rejected His grace. What transformation strikes the earth at Christ’s return?
EARTH SHAKEN APART!
The Second Coming brings a cataclysmic transformation of the earth itself. The Bible reveals, “There was a great earthquake, such a mighty and great earthquake as had not occurred since men were on the earth. … Then every island fled away, and the mountains were not found” (Revelation 16:18, 20, KJV). The prophet Jeremiah beheld this desolation, stating, “I beheld, and indeed the fruitful land was a wilderness, and all its cities were broken down at the presence of the Lord” (Jeremiah 4:26, KJV). Isaiah emphasizes the utter devastation, proclaiming, “The Lord makes the earth empty and makes it waste. … The land shall be entirely emptied” (Isaiah 24:1, 3, KJV). This universal earthquake devastates the world into total destruction. Supporting verses include “The earth is utterly broken down” (Isaiah 24:19, KJV), and “The earth shall reel to and fro like a drunkard” (Isaiah 24:20, KJV). Scriptures support this with “The earth also is defiled under the inhabitants thereof; because they have transgressed the laws, changed the ordinance, broken the everlasting covenant” (Isaiah 24:5, KJV) and “Therefore hath the curse devoured the earth, and they that dwell therein are desolate: therefore the inhabitants of the earth are burned, and few men left” (Isaiah 24:6, KJV). Sr. White states, “The earth looked like a desolate wilderness. Cities and villages, shaken down by the earthquake, lay in heaps” (Early Writings, p. 290, 1882). She adds, “Huge rocks have been thrown out into the sea. The graves are opened, and the dead come up clothed with immortality” (The Signs of the Times, January 3, 1884). The community witnesses the earth’s transformation underscoring the magnitude of Christ’s return. What prophetic signs indicate Christ’s near return?
SIGNS FLASH WARNING!
The Bible provides specific information regarding the nearness of Christ’s Second Coming through a series of prophetic signs. Jesus declares, “When you see all these things, know that it is near—at the doors!” (Matthew 24:33, KJV). The Lord places these markers along the timeline from His ascension to His return. One such sign was the destruction of Jerusalem, prophesied in Matthew 24:2 and 16, fulfilled in AD 70. Another significant sign was the great persecution and tribulation, foretold in Matthew 24:21 (KJV), pointing to the suffering during the Dark Ages. Cosmic disturbances include the sun turning dark, fulfilled by the darkness of May 19, 1780, and the moon turning to blood, on the same night. The falling of the stars, in the meteor shower of November 13, 1833, serves as another powerful sign. Sr. White confirms, “The Savior foretold the great events which were to take place before His second coming” (The Great Controversy, p. 304, 1911). Scriptures state “The stars of heaven fell unto the earth” (Revelation 6:13, KJV), and “There shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars” (Luke 21:25, KJV). Scriptures support this with “And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring” (Luke 21:25, KJV) and “Men’s hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken” (Luke 21:26, KJV). Sr. White states, “The signs in the sun, moon, and stars have been fulfilled. Since that time earthquakes, tempests, tidal waves, pestilence, famine, and destructions by fire and flood, have multiplied” (Review and Herald, June 10, 1902). She adds, “All these portray the last scenes of earth’s history” (Review and Herald, June 10, 1902). The community sees the next great event in this sequence as the appearance of Jesus coming in the clouds. What characteristics define the last days?
FINAL DAYS FORETOLD!
The Bible provides distinct indicators to discern when the world reaches the very last days of earth’s history, describing the world and its people in the final generation. Jesus foretells, “When you hear of wars and commotions, do not be terrified; for these things must come to pass” (Luke 21:9, KJV), fulfilled in the numerous conflicts and terror attacks affecting the world today. He speaks of “distress of nations, with perplexity … men’s hearts failing them from fear and the expectation of those things which are coming on the earth” (Luke 21:25, 26, KJV), portraying the anxiety and uncertainty prevalent. The prophecy in Daniel 12:4 foretells an “increase of knowledge” in the time of the end, evident in the Information Age. The apostle Peter warns that “scoffers will come in the last days” (2 Peter 3:3, KJV) who “will not endure sound doctrine … [and] will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables” (2 Timothy 4:3, 4, KJV), seen in the denial of fundamental Bible truths. Moral degeneracy and a decline of spirituality prophesy: “In the last days … men will be lovers of themselves … unloving … without self-control … despisers of good … having a form of godliness but denying its power” (2 Timothy 3:1–5, KJV). A “craze for pleasure” grips humanity, with people being “lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God” (2 Timothy 3:4, KJV). Jesus foretells that “lawlessness will abound” (Matthew 24:12, KJV), with “evil men and impostors will grow worse and worse” (2 Timothy 3:13, KJV), and “the land is filled with crimes of blood, and the city is full of violence” (Ezekiel 7:23, KJV). Natural disasters and upheaval predict: “There will be great earthquakes in various places, and famines and pestilences … and on the earth distress of nations, with perplexity” (Luke 21:11, 25, KJV). A special message about Christ’s return preaches worldwide (Matthew 24:14, KJV), and a turning to spiritism occurs (1 Timothy 4:1, KJV). Sr. White states “Their forces are consolidating. They are strengthening for the last great crisis” (Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 9, p. 11, 1909). Verses include “The earth also is defiled under the inhabitants thereof” (Isaiah 24:5, KJV), and “The nations were angry, and thy wrath is come” (Revelation 11:18, KJV). Scriptures support this with “This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come” (2 Timothy 3:1, KJV) and “Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts” (2 Peter 3:3, KJV). Sr. White states, “The nations are in unrest. Times of perplexity are upon us. Men’s hearts are failing them for fear of the things that are coming upon the earth” (Review and Herald, October 20, 1914). She adds, “The present is a time of overwhelming interest to all living. Rulers and statesmen, men who occupy positions of trust and authority, thinking men and women of all classes, have their attention fixed upon the events taking place about us” (Testimonies for the Church, vol. 6, p. 436, 1900). The community observes these signs pointing unmistakably to living in the closing days of earth’s history. What nearness signals Christ’s coming?
ADVENT APPROACHES FAST!
The Bible specifies the nearness of the Lord’s Second Coming. Jesus instructs, “Now learn this parable from the fig tree: When its branch has already become tender and puts forth leaves, you know that summer is near. So you also, when you see all these things, know that it is near—at the doors! Assuredly, I say to you, this generation will by no means pass away till all these things take place” (Matthew 24:32–34, KJV). While no one knows the exact day and hour of Christ’s return (Matthew 24:36, KJV), the community discerns His coming as imminent. God promises to finish things very quickly now (Romans 9:28, KJV). Sr. White emphasizes this point, stating, “Christ has given signs of His coming. He declares that we may know when He is near, even at the doors” (The Desire of Ages, p. 632, 1898). Supporting Scriptures include “The end of all things is at hand” (1 Peter 4:7, KJV), and “The coming of the Lord draweth nigh” (James 5:8, KJV). Scriptures support this with “But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer” (1 Peter 4:7, KJV) and “Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long patience for it, until he receive the early and latter rain” (James 5:7, KJV). Sr. White states, “The exact time of the second coming of the Son of man is God’s mystery” (The Desire of Ages, p. 633, 1898). She adds, “We are standing on the threshold of the crisis of the ages. In quick succession the judgments of God will follow one another—fire, and flood, and earthquake, with war and bloodshed” (Prophets and Kings, p. 278, 1917). The community finds the fulfillment of almost all the predicted signs assuring that Christ comes back to this earth for His people very soon. What deceptions does Satan spread regarding the Second Coming?
SATAN’S SLY SCHEMES!
Satan spreads falsehoods regarding the Second Coming of Christ, employing lying wonders and miracles to deceive millions. Jesus warns, “False christs and false prophets will rise and show great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect” (Matthew 24:24, KJV). To avoid deception, the community adheres to the divine standard: “To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, it is because there is no light in them” (Isaiah 8:20, KJV). Christ cautions, “Take heed that no one deceives you” (Matthew 24:4, KJV), and reminds, “See, I have told you beforehand” (Matthew 24:25, KJV). For instance, He states that He will not appear in the desert or come to a séance chamber (Matthew 24:26, KJV). Sr. White provides clear counsel: “Only those who have been diligent students of the Scriptures and who have received the love of the truth will be shielded from the powerful delusion” (The Great Controversy, p. 625, 1911). Verses affirm “Believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God” (1 John 4:1, KJV), and “The spirit of error” (1 John 4:6, KJV). Scriptures support this with “For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect” (Matthew 24:24, KJV) and “Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders” (2 Thessalonians 2:9, KJV). Sr. White states, “Satan will work ‘with all power and signs and lying wonders, and with all deceivableness of unrighteousness.’ And all that ‘received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved,’ will be left to accept ‘strong delusion, that they should believe a lie’” (The Great Controversy, p. 593, 1911). She adds, “As the crowning act in the great drama of deception, Satan himself will personate Christ” (The Great Controversy, p. 624, 1911). The community knows those who understand what the Bible teaches about the Second Coming avoid Satan’s deceptions. How does the community prepare for Christ’s return?
PREPARE WITH POWER!
To ensure readiness when Jesus comes back, the community heeds His invitation: “The one who comes to Me I will by no means cast out” (John 6:37, KJV). The community receives the right to become children of God by receiving Him (John 1:12, KJV). God promises, “I will put My laws in their mind and write them on their hearts” (Hebrews 8:10, KJV). Victory over sin assures through our Lord Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 15:57, KJV). Jesus stands at the door of hearts, knocking (Revelation 3:20, KJV). By turning lives over to Him, He erases all sins (Acts 3:19, KJV) and gives power to live a godly life (2 Peter 1:3, KJV). Sr. White assures: “Through the Spirit the believer becomes a partaker of the divine nature. Christ has promised that the Holy Spirit shall abide with those who wrestle with God and purify their souls” (The Desire of Ages, p. 671, 1898). Supporting verses include “He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life” (John 3:36, KJV), and “The Lord will perfect that which concerneth me” (Psalm 138:8, KJV). Scriptures support this with “But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name” (John 1:12, KJV) and “According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue” (2 Peter 1:3, KJV). Sr. White states, “The time has come when we must expect the Lord to do great things for us. Our efforts must not flag or weaken. We are to grow in grace and in the knowledge of the Lord” (Review and Herald, June 23, 1904). She adds, “It is our privilege to open our hearts, and let the sunshine of Christ’s presence in. My brother, my sister, face the light. Come into actual, personal contact with Christ” (The Signs of the Times, February 17, 1904). The community’s part gives lives to Christ and lets Him live within. What danger lurks in being unprepared?
UNREADY RISK RUIN!
Christ warns of the great danger in lacking preparation for His return. He says, “Be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect” (Matthew 24:44, KJV). The community receives caution to “take heed to yourselves, lest your hearts be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness, and cares of this life, and that Day come on you unexpectedly” (Luke 21:34, KJV). The coming of the Son of Man resembles the days of Noah (Matthew 24:37, KJV), when the flood surprised the world. Sr. White emphasizes this danger: “The great danger is in being self-deceived, indulging self-sufficiency, and thus separating from God, the source of his strength” (Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 8, p. 315, 1904). Scriptures warn “Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come” (Matthew 24:42, KJV), and “Lest coming suddenly he find you sleeping” (Mark 13:36, KJV). Scriptures support this with “Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober” (1 Thessalonians 5:6, KJV) and “But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry” (2 Timothy 4:5, KJV). Sr. White states, “We cannot be ready to meet the Lord by waking when the cry is heard, ‘Behold, the Bridegroom!’ and then gathering up our empty lamps to have them replenished” (Christ’s Object Lessons, p. 413, 1900). She adds, “Without the Spirit of God a knowledge of His word is of no avail. The theory of truth, unaccompanied by the Holy Spirit, cannot quicken the soul or sanctify the heart” (Christ’s Object Lessons, p. 408, 1900). The community sees millions sadly experiencing this unpreparedness. How does God’s love shine in the Second Coming?
LOVE’S GRAND DISPLAY!
The concepts surrounding the Second Coming profoundly reflect God’s love for humanity. His promise to return and take His people to Himself (John 14:3, KJV) acts with immense love and grace. The provision of resurrected and transformed bodies (1 Corinthians 15:51–53, KJV) demonstrates His desire for eternal well-being and perfect fellowship with Him. Sr. White captures this sentiment: “Christ is waiting with longing desire for the manifestation of Himself in His church” (Christ’s Object Lessons, p. 69, 1900). Supporting verses include “The Lord hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love” (Jeremiah 31:3, KJV), and “God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son” (John 3:16, KJV). Scriptures support this with “Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world” (1 John 4:17, KJV) and “Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not” (1 John 3:1, KJV). Sr. White states, “The love of God is something more than a mere negation; it is a positive and active benevolence, a love which cares for the welfare of others” (Review and Herald, January 5, 1886). She adds, “God’s love for His children during the period of their severest trial is as strong and tender as in the days of their sunniest prosperity” (The Great Controversy, p. 621, 1911). The community witnesses this entire plan of redemption, culminating in the Second Coming, revealing the depth of God’s love and His unwavering commitment to His creation. What responsibilities does the community hold to God and neighbor?
DUTY CALLS LOUD!
In light of these concepts, responsibilities toward God clarify. The community receives a call to a life of readiness, constantly watching and praying for His return (Luke 21:36, KJV). This involves wholehearted surrender to His will and obedience to His commandments. Sr. White states, “God requires the entire surrender of the heart, before justification can take place” (Faith and Works, p. 100, 1979). Responsibilities toward neighbor hold equal importance. Having received the light of truth regarding the Second Coming, the community shares this message with the world. Sr. White declares, “The last message of mercy is to be given to the world by those who have received the light of truth” (Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 9, p. 19, 1909). This involves proclaiming the three angels’ messages (Revelation 14:6-12, KJV) and the message of the fourth angel (Revelation 18:1-4, KJV), warning of impending judgment and offering the hope of salvation through Christ. Supporting verses include “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations” (Matthew 28:19, KJV), and “Ye are my witnesses, saith the Lord” (Isaiah 43:10, KJV). Scriptures support this with “And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature” (Mark 16:15, KJV) and “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven” (Matthew 5:16, KJV). Sr. White states, “Every one who accepts Christ as his personal Saviour will long for the privilege of serving God” (Gospel Workers, p. 198, 1915). She adds, “The real character of the church is measured, not by the high profession she makes, not by the names enrolled upon the church book, but by what she is actually doing for the Master, by the number of her persevering, faithful workers” (Review and Herald, December 4, 1894). The community’s focus lives lives that honor Him, reflecting His character in all done. What living hope does the Second Coming inspire?
HOPE BURNS BRIGHT!
In reflecting upon the Second Coming, the community recognizes it as a living hope that shapes present lives. It calls to examine hearts, ensuring readiness for the Lord’s return. The signs surround, the prophecies fulfill, and the time draws nearer. The Second Coming of Jesus Christ blesses the hope of the community. We all watch, work, and wait, with lamps trimmed and burning, eager to welcome our Lord when He appears in glory. “Even so, come, Lord Jesus” (Revelation 22:20, KJV). Supporting verses include “Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ” (Titus 2:13, KJV), and “Blessed are those servants, whom the lord when he cometh shall find watching” (Luke 12:37, KJV). Scriptures support this with “Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing” (2 Timothy 4:8, KJV) and “And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure” (1 John 3:3, KJV). Sr. White states, “The coming of the Lord has been in all ages the hope of His true followers” (The Great Controversy, p. 302, 1911). She adds, “The same trials have been experienced by men of God in ages past. Wycliffe, Huss, Luther, Tyndale, Baxter, Wesley, urged that all doctrines be tested by the Bible and the Bible alone” (The Great Controversy, p. 591, 1911). The community draws inspiration from this living hope to live faithfully for Christ.
“Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ” (Titus 2:13, KJV).
