THREE ANGEL’S MESSAGE: DARE YOU HEED THE LATTER RAIN’S CALL?

Be glad then, ye children of Zion, and rejoice in the LORD your God: for he hath given you the former rain moderately, and he will cause to come down for you the rain, the former rain, and the latter rain in the first month (Joel 2:23, KJV).

ABSTRACT

The latter rain symbolizes a powerful spiritual outpouring that will energize us to proclaim the third angel’s message boldly, unveiling deceptions, confronting opposition, facing the ultimate faith test amid enforced observances, all while being purified by divine love to remain steadfast until the end.

THE TIME OF THE LATTER RAIN

The concept of the latter rain and the third angel’s message, as described in the book of Revelation, is a prophecy that stirs within me both awe and a sense of urgency. It’s a message for every soul seeking truth. This blog post is my attempt to unpack this vital message, exploring its depths and relating it to the world we live in today. Christ reveals that we must prepare for this spiritual outpouring. Scripture affirms that “Ask ye of the LORD rain in the time of the latter rain; so the LORD shall make bright clouds, and give them showers of rain, to every one grass in the field” (Zechariah 10:1, KJV). Scripture further declares that “Then shall we know, if we follow on to know the LORD: his going forth is prepared as the morning; and he shall come unto us as the rain, as the latter and former rain unto the earth” (Hosea 6:3, KJV). In Early Writings we read, “At that time the ‘latter rain,’ or refreshing from the presence of the Lord, will come, to give power to the loud voice of the third angel, and prepare the saints to stand in the period when the seven last plagues shall be poured out” (Early Writings, pp. 85-86, 1854). Through inspired counsel we are told, “The latter rain, ripening earth’s harvest, represents the spiritual grace that prepares the church for the coming of the Son of man” (Testimonies to Ministers and Gospel Workers, p. 506, 1923). This prophecy demands our full attention and preparation. Are you ready to delve into this prophetic storm with me?

WHAT MAKES THE VISION PLAIN?

Habakkuk 2:2-4 (KJV) sets the stage: “And the Lord answered me, and said, Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it.” This verse paints a picture of a message so important that it must be clearly communicated, accessible to all. Sr. White reinforces this idea, stating that the third angel’s message will reach its peak during the latter rain, delivered with unprecedented power through humble individuals. Imagine the clarity this brings to our daily lives. God directs us to “Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long patience for it, until he receive the early and latter rain” (James 5:7, KJV). God promises that “In the light of the king’s countenance is life; and his favour is as a cloud of the latter rain” (Proverbs 16:15, KJV). A passage from Patriarchs and Prophets reminds us, “As the dew and the rain are given first to cause the seed to germinate, and then to ripen the harvest, so the Holy Spirit is given to carry forward, from one stage to another, the process of spiritual growth” (Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 672, 1890). The inspired pen declares, “The ripening of the grain represents the completion of the work of God’s grace in the soul” (Christ’s Object Lessons, p. 67, 1900). This isn’t just a whisper; it’s a “loud cry,” a trumpet blast of truth meant to awaken a slumbering world. I see this call reflected in the growing unrest and questioning we see in our society today. People are hungry for truth, searching for answers in a world filled with uncertainty. Are we ready to share that truth with clarity and conviction?

WHAT UNMASKS BABYLON’S DECEPTION?

The latter rain period will be a time of intense revelation. The errors of Babylon, long hidden, will be exposed, and the rapid growth of papal power and spiritualism will be unmasked. Picture the illumination this brings to hidden truths. Scripture reveals that “The LORD shall rise up as in mount Perazim, he shall be wroth as in the valley of Gibeon, that he may do his work, his strange work; and bring to pass his act, his strange act” (Isaiah 28:21, KJV). Revealing divine judgment clearly, “The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God” (Psalm 9:17, KJV). In The Story of Redemption we read, “The great outpouring of the Spirit of God, which lightens the whole earth with His glory, will not come until we have an enlightened people, that know by experience what it means to be laborers together with God” (The Story of Redemption, p. 402, 1947). A prophetic voice once wrote, “I saw that many were neglecting the preparation so needful and were looking to the time of ‘refreshing’ and the ‘latter rain’ to fit them to stand in the day of the Lord and to live in His sight” (Early Writings, p. 71, 1882). Imagine a spotlight shining into the darkest corners, revealing the hidden agendas and deceptive practices that have led many astray. This exposure is not meant to incite hatred, but to awaken hearts to the truth. It’s a work of love, even when it feels like a harsh revelation. We see parallels of this in our world today as corruption and deception are being brought to light in various institutions. Are we prepared to lovingly speak the truth, even when it challenges established norms?

WHAT ECHOES HISTORY’S RESISTANCE?

Throughout history, truth has often been met with resistance. Just as the Pharisees rejected Jesus, many religious leaders will reject the third angel’s message, clinging to tradition and human authority rather than embracing the warnings from God’s word. Consider the persistent opposition this provokes. Christ ministers as our advocate, declaring that “Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do ye” (Acts 7:51, KJV). Revealing His role clearly, “Now as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, reprobate concerning the faith” (2 Timothy 3:8, KJV). In The Acts of the Apostles we read, “The One who has stood as our Intercessor; who hears all penitential prayers and confessions; who is represented with a rainbow, the symbol of grace and love, encircling His head, is soon to cease His work in the heavenly sanctuary” (The Acts of the Apostles, p. 602, 1911). Through inspired counsel we are told, “Grace and mercy will then descend from the throne, and justice will take their place. He for whom His people have looked will assume His right the office of Supreme Judge” (The Review and Herald, January 1, 1889). This resistance will manifest in persecution, attempts to silence those proclaiming the truth. I see this echoed in the increasing intolerance towards dissenting voices in our society. Those who dare to challenge the status quo are often labeled as radicals or extremists. How can we maintain our courage and integrity in the face of such opposition?

WHAT TESTS FAITH IN THE FINAL SHOWDOWN?

As the latter rain intensifies, civil powers will be influenced to enforce religious observances, such as Sunday laws, as a means of control. Envision the pivotal choice this demands. God commands that “If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the LORD, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words” (Isaiah 58:13, KJV). Scripture affirms that “And hallow my sabbaths; and they shall be a sign between me and you, that ye may know that I am the LORD your God” (Ezekiel 20:20, KJV). A passage from Maranatha reminds us, “The Sunday movement is now making its way in darkness. The leaders are concealing the true issue, and many who unite in the movement do not themselves see whither the undercurrent is tending” (Maranatha, p. 204, 1976). The inspired pen declares, “We have been looking many years for a Sunday law to be enacted in our land, and now that the movement is right upon us, we ask, What are our people going to do in the matter?” (Selected Messages, Book 3, p. 380, 1980). This will be a pivotal moment, a final test of faith. The remnant church, those who remain faithful to God’s commandments, will play a crucial role in this final showdown. The loud cry of the third angel’s message, proclaiming obedience to God’s law, particularly the Sabbath, will reach its crescendo. This isn’t just about a day of the week; it’s about allegiance – to God or to human authority. I believe we are seeing the groundwork being laid for this very scenario as religious and political powers increasingly intertwine. Are we preparing ourselves to stand firm for truth, even if it means facing persecution?

WHAT REFINES THROUGH DIVINE LOVE?

God’s love, like a refiner’s fire, purifies and strengthens. The latter rain, though it brings trials and tribulations, is ultimately an act of love. As Sr. White writes, “The Lord is more willing to give the Holy Spirit to those who serve Him than parents are to give good gifts to their children.” This powerful statement assures us of God’s unwavering desire to equip us for the final conflict. God purifies through trials, declaring that “For thou, O God, hast proved us: thou hast tried us, as silver is tried” (Psalm 66:10, KJV). God tests our hearts, promising that “Behold, I have refined thee, but not with silver; I have chosen thee in the furnace of affliction” (Isaiah 48:10, KJV). In Education we read, “The fact that we are called upon to endure trial shows that the Lord Jesus sees in us something precious which He desires to develop” (Education, p. 151, 1903). A prophetic voice once wrote, “If He saw in us nothing whereby He might glorify His name, He would not spend time in refining us” (The Ministry of Healing, p. 471, 1905). This outpouring of the Spirit, though accompanied by challenges, is a testament to His love, enabling us to stand firm in the face of opposition. It’s a love that doesn’t shield us from hardship but empowers us to overcome it. The trials of the latter rain, though difficult, are a manifestation of God’s love, designed to refine us and prepare us for His kingdom.

WHAT CALLS US TO STAND FIRM?

The time of the latter rain is a time of both great opportunity and great peril. It’s a time when truth will shine brightly, but also a time when darkness will intensify its efforts to deceive. We are called to be faithful witnesses, proclaiming the third angel’s message with clarity and courage. We must stand firm on the Word of God, even when the storm rages around us. God strengthens the faithful, declaring that “Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong” (1 Corinthians 16:13, KJV). God upholds the steadfast, promising that “Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord” (1 Corinthians 15:58, KJV). In Last Day Events we read, “We know not the time when the latter rain in its fullness is to fall; this is not revealed to us in the Bible or by Ellen White” (Last Day Events, p. 179, 1992). Through inspired counsel we are told, “When the richest abundance of grace shall be bestowed, they intend to open their hearts to receive it” (Testimonies to Ministers and Gospel Workers, p. 507, 1923). As I reflect on these things, I am reminded of my own need for deeper consecration and a stronger reliance on God. We must, as a community, support and encourage one another as we face the challenges ahead. The call is clear: “Show us from the word of God our error.” Let us be ready to give an answer for the hope that lies within us. (1 Peter 3:15 KJV). Let us be ready for the latter rain.
