OUR DUTY TOWARD CIVIL AUTHORITIES: GOD’S GRIP ON GOVERNMENTS!

And he changeth the times and the seasons: he removeth kings, and setteth up kings: he giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding (Daniel 4:17, KJV).

ABSTRACT

God’s sovereignty provides ultimate assurance in political chaos, guiding us to avoid worldly entanglements while reflecting divine love through faithful living. Scripture reveals that divine authority governs all earthly powers, ensuring no event escapes heavenly oversight. Clearly, the Lord establishes rulers to fulfill His purposes, as seen in historical accounts where kings rose and fell under providential direction. In Patriarchs and Prophets we read, “Every manifestation of creative power is an expression of infinite love. The sovereignty of God involves fullness of blessing to all created beings” (Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 33, 1890). A prophetic voice once wrote, “The history of nations speaks to us today. To every nation and to every individual God has assigned a place in His great plan” (Prophets and Kings, p. 536, 1917). “The king’s heart is in the hand of the Lord, as the rivers of water: he turneth it whithersoever he will” (Proverbs 21:1, KJV). “For the kingdom is the Lord’s: and he is the governor among the nations” (Psalm 22:28, KJV). This divine oversight frees us from fear, allowing faithful service amid uncertainty, but how does Scripture reassure us that God remains in control even if we step back from politics?

SOVEREIGN SAVIOR STEERS SOVEREIGNS!

In a world of political upheaval, many wonder, “If we do not engage in politics, will Satan gain control?” Scripture provides a reassuring answer. God, the ultimate sovereign, determines the course of history. Daniel 2:21 (KJV) proclaims, “And he changeth the times and the seasons: he removeth kings, and setteth up kings: he giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding.” These words assure us that human leadership is under divine authority. Revealing His role clearly, God exercises power over all rulers, directing events to align with eternal plans. Through inspired counsel we are told, “God has a purpose in permitting these calamities to occur. They are one of His means of calling men and women to their senses” (Evangelism, p. 27, 1946). In The Great Controversy we read, “In the annals of human history, the growth of nations, the rise and fall of empires, appear as if dependent on the will and prowess of man; the shaping of events seems, to a great degree, to be determined by his power, ambition, or caprice. But in the word of God the curtain is drawn aside, and we behold, above, behind, and through all the play and counterplay of human interest and power and passions, the agencies of the All-merciful One, silently, patiently working out the counsels of His own will” (The Great Controversy, p. ix, 1911). “The Lord hath prepared his throne in the heavens; and his kingdom ruleth over all” (Psalm 103:19, KJV). “For promotion cometh neither from the east, nor from the west, nor from the south. But God is the judge: he putteth down one, and setteth up another” (Psalm 75:6-7, KJV). This truth comforts us in turbulent times, affirming divine plans prevail, but how far does God’s hand extend in overseeing leadership beyond the righteous?

DIVINE DOMINION DIRECTS DESTINIES!

God’s hand in leadership extends beyond the righteous. In Job 12:18-19, we read, “He looseth the bonds of kings, and girdeth their loins with a girdle. He leadeth princes away spoiled, and overthroweth the mighty.” This profound truth highlights God’s power to appoint and remove rulers, ensuring that His plans prevail. Even unrighteous leaders, as shown in Jeremiah 27:4-8, serve a purpose in His divine plan. These passages teach us to trust that no political event escapes His control, comforting us amid uncertainty. Scripture reveals that God uses all authorities to advance His kingdom, weaving human actions into providential outcomes. The inspired pen notes, “God moves upon the heart of kings; the Lord still holds the balance of all nations” (The Signs of the Times, January 8, 1880). A passage from Education reminds us, “To understand these things,—to understand that ‘righteousness exalteth a nation;’ that ‘the throne is established by righteousness,’ and ‘upholden by mercy;’ to recognize the outworking of these principles in the manifestation of His power who ‘removeth kings, and setteth up kings;’—this is to understand the philosophy of history” (Education, p. 175, 1903). “He ruleth by his power for ever; his eyes behold the nations: let not the rebellious exalt themselves. Selah” (Psalm 66:7, KJV). “This matter is by the decree of the watchers, and the demand by the word of the holy ones: to the intent that the living may know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will, and setteth up over it the basest of men” (Daniel 4:17, KJV). Such assurance strengthens our resolve to prioritize eternal matters, but what calls us specifically to steer clear of political involvement?

FAITHFUL FOLLOWERS FLEE FRAYS!

Sr. White underscores the danger of political involvement, advising Christians to focus on spreading the gospel. In Gospel Workers, she writes, “Carry forward the work of God firmly and strongly, but in the meekness of Christ” (p. 374). Engaging in political debates can distract us from our sacred responsibilities, dividing churches and communities. Instead, our mission lies in living and sharing God’s Word. By anchoring ourselves in Christ, we can rise above worldly conflicts and remain faithful to our calling. Clearly, prioritizing gospel work preserves unity and purpose within the community. Through inspired counsel we are told, “The Lord would have His people bury political questions. On these themes silence is eloquence. Christ calls upon His followers to come into unity on the pure gospel principles which are plainly revealed in the word of God. We cannot with safety vote for political parties; for we do not know whom we are voting for” (Gospel Workers, p. 391, 1915). In Fundamentals of Christian Education we read, “Those teachers in the church or in the school who distinguish themselves by their zeal in politics, should be relieved of their work and responsibilities without delay; for the Lord will not co-operate with them” (Fundamentals of Christian Education, p. 475, 1923). “No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier” (2 Timothy 2:4, KJV). “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God” (Romans 12:2, KJV). This focus safeguards our spiritual priorities, but what risks arise when we compromise in political arenas?

COMPROMISE CRUSHES CONVICTIONS!

Compromise in politics poses a significant risk to spiritual integrity. Sr. White warns in The Great Controversy: “The very beginning of the great apostasy was in seeking to supplement the authority of God by that of the church” (p. 289-290). This statement reflects the historical dangers of placing human traditions above divine commands. When we prioritize political alliances over God’s principles, we risk blending truth with error. Staying faithful requires vigilance against such compromises, as small deviations can lead us away from God’s path. Scripture reveals that yielding to worldly pressures erodes our commitment to heavenly standards. A prophetic voice once wrote, “There is to be no compromise with those who make void the law of God. It is not safe to rely upon them as counselors. Our testimony is not to be less decided now than formerly; our real position is not to be cloaked in order to please the world’s great ones” (Testimonies for the Church, vol. 8, p. 304, 1904). In Testimonies to Ministers and Gospel Workers we read, “The spirit of compromise with the world, the reluctance to come out from the world and be separate, is entirely opposed to the teachings of our Saviour and the spirit of His gospel” (Testimonies to Ministers and Gospel Workers, p. 141, 1923). “Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful” (Psalm 1:1, KJV). “Can two walk together, except they be agreed?” (Amos 3:3, KJV). Guarding against these perils maintains our purity, but what threats emerge from forming unholy alliances?

ALLIANCES ALERT: DANGEROUS DEALS DEFIED!

The Bible warns against alliances that compromise faith. “Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers” (2 Corinthians 6:14, KJV). This verse cautions us against partnerships that conflict with God’s law. Sr. White echoes this in Testimonies for the Church: “Confederacies with the ungodly bring only weakness and spiritual loss” (vol. 5, p. 451). As society forms unions, monopolies, and secret societies, we must guard against entanglements that undermine our integrity. Such vigilance preserves our spiritual purity and testimony. Clearly, unequal yokes lead to division and loss within the community. The inspired pen warns, “The trades unions and confederacies of the world are a snare. Keep out of them, and away from them, brethren. Have nothing to do with them” (Selected Messages, book 2, p. 143, 1958). A passage from Country Living reminds us, “In all our great cities there will be a binding up in bundles by the confederacies and unions formed. Men will rule other men and demand much of them. The lives of those who refuse to unite with these unions will be in peril” (Country Living, p. 10, 1946). “Enter not into the path of the wicked, and go not in the way of evil men” (Proverbs 4:14, KJV). “Come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you” (2 Corinthians 6:17, KJV). This separation upholds our witness, but how do these principles ultimately showcase God’s love?

LOVE’S LIGHT: HEAVENLY HEART REVEALED!

These principles ultimately reflect God’s love. His sovereignty assures us that no ruler or event can thwart His plans. As Daniel 2:21 declares, “He removeth kings, and setteth up kings.” This authority ensures justice and purpose, even in chaos. Sr. White affirms in Steps to Christ: “The Father’s heart yearns over His children, and His plans are for their good” (p. 21). Trusting His control brings peace, aligning our hearts with His divine love. This trust frees us to serve faithfully, focusing on eternal matters rather than temporal strife. Scripture reveals that divine love manifests through providential care and guidance. Through inspired counsel we are told, “God’s love is revealed in all His dealings with His people; and with clear, unclouded eyes, in full view of His merciful and gracious long-suffering, we may discern in all His gifts His glory” (Testimonies for the Church, vol. 5, p. 739, 1889). In The Desire of Ages we read, “God desires from all His creatures the service of love—service that springs from an appreciation of His character. He takes no pleasure in a forced obedience; and to all He grants freedom of will, that they may render Him voluntary service” (The Desire of Ages, p. 591, 1898). “Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God” (1 John 4:7, KJV). “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding” (Proverbs 3:5, KJV). Embracing this love empowers steadfastness, but how can we remain faithful amid escalating political tensions?

FAITHFUL FRONT: TRIUMPH IN TURMOIL!

In times of political tension, we face a choice: engage in secular debates or trust God’s sovereignty. By focusing on Christ, we resist the distractions and compromises of worldly matters. As a community of faith, we can reflect His love, uphold His principles, and fulfill our sacred mission. Let us find comfort in knowing that God, who changes times and seasons, remains firmly in control.
