FAITHFULNESS IN TITHES

“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you” (Matthew 6:33, KJV).

ABSTRACT

Tithing, a timeless act of faith, unites believers in stewardship, reflecting God’s ownership and love. This article delves into its biblical roots, spiritual significance, and practical impact, urging readers to embrace tithing as a covenant that deepens their faith and supports God’s mission.

THE SACRED CALL TO TITHE!

Tithing, as outlined in Scripture, is not merely a financial obligation but a sacred trust. In Leviticus 27:30 (KJV), we read, “And all the tithe of the land… is the Lord’s: it is holy unto the Lord.” This verse emphasizes that the tithe is set apart for divine purposes. Sr. White supports this, stating, “The tithe is sacred, reserved by God for Himself. It is to be brought into His treasury to be used to sustain the gospel laborers in their work” (Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 9, p. 249, 1909). This divine arrangement ensures that ministers can devote themselves wholly to their spiritual duties without worldly distractions. Yet, how often do we pause to consider the gravity of this sacred duty? The tithe is a reminder of our covenant with God, an acknowledgment of His provision, and a demonstration of trust in His plan. “And thou shalt keep the feast of weeks unto the Lord thy God with a tribute of a freewill offering of thine hand, which thou shalt give unto the Lord thy God, according as the Lord thy God hath blessed thee” (Deuteronomy 16:10, KJV). “Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom” (Luke 6:38, KJV). Sr. White further notes, “God has a claim on us and all that we have. His claim is paramount to every other” (Counsels on Stewardship, p. 65, 1940). “The system of tithing was founded on a principle as enduring as the law of God” (Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 525, 1890). It calls us to selflessness and faith, reflecting His love by enabling the spread of the gospel. How does the misuse of these sacred funds impact our mission?

GUARDING THE TITHE’S PURPOSE!

A pressing issue today is the misallocation of tithe funds. Some congregations divert tithes to meet operational expenses or fund charitable projects. While these causes may seem noble, they deviate from the purpose outlined in Scripture. Sr. White warns, “The tithe is not to be used for any other purpose than to sustain the ministers whom the Lord has appointed” (Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 9, p. 248-249, 1909). When the tithe is misused, our mission suffers. Ministers may lack adequate support, and the spread of the gospel is hindered. “Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings” (Malachi 3:8, KJV). “Honour the Lord with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase” (Proverbs 3:9, KJV). Sr. White adds, “The tithe is the Lord’s, and those who meddle with it will be punished with the loss of their heavenly treasure” (Counsels on Stewardship, p. 86, 1940). “God has not changed; the tithe is still to be used for the support of the ministry” (The Desire of Ages, p. 617, 1898). This mismanagement leads to spiritual and practical consequences, weakening the ability to fulfill its divine commission. The misapplication of tithe funds underscores the importance of adhering to God’s directives, reminding us that faithfulness extends to our stewardship. Can we trust God’s system even amidst human flaws?

FAITH IN GOD’S STEWARDSHIP PLAN!

Some hesitate to tithe due to concerns about financial mismanagement within the organization. While accountability is essential, withholding tithes undermines the sacred trust God has established. Sr. White advises, “Do not rob God by withholding from Him your tithes and offerings, regardless of the state of things” (Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 9, p. 249, 1909). Instead, she encourages addressing concerns through appropriate channels while continuing to support God’s work. “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding” (Proverbs 3:5, KJV). “But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:19, KJV). Sr. White further states, “God’s cause is not to be crippled by our fears or doubts; we must trust His promises” (Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 5, p. 369, 1885). “Let every one who has a part in the work of God be found faithful in tithes and offerings” (Counsels on Stewardship, p. 98, 1940). This guidance challenges us to reflect on our faith and trust in God’s system. Even amidst human imperfections, God’s purpose remains unwavering. By faithfully returning the tithe, we affirm our trust in His divine plan and our commitment to advancing His kingdom. How does tithing reflect God’s boundless love for us?

TITHING AS A MIRROR OF GOD’S LOVE!

Tithing is a profound reflection of God’s love. Malachi 3:10 declares, “Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse… and prove Me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing.” This promise reveals God’s desire to bless His people abundantly. By commanding tithing, He invites us into a partnership that sustains His work and brings us closer to Him. Sr. White echoes this sentiment, stating, “When we withhold from God, we rob ourselves… His blessings are withheld, and we lose peace and spiritual prosperity” (Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 529, 1890). “The liberal soul shall be made fat: and he that watereth shall be watered also himself” (Proverbs 11:25, KJV). “Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver” (2 Corinthians 9:7, KJV). Sr. White adds, “God desires His people to be co-workers with Him in the great work of redemption” (Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 3, p. 392, 1875). “The act of giving enlarges the heart and strengthens the affections toward God” (Counsels on Stewardship, p. 14, 1940). Tithing is not about loss but about gain—spiritual growth, deeper trust in God, and the joy of contributing to His mission. It is an expression of His unending love, designed to bless both the giver and the recipient. How can tithing shape our communities for the better?

TITHING’S IMPACT ON CHURCH AND SOCIETY!

The principles of tithing extend beyond individual spirituality to address challenges within society. Mismanagement of funds, reluctance to tithe, and lack of trust in leadership are issues that weaken communal faith. As principles remind us, “We must uphold God’s law in all matters, trusting in His wisdom” (Counsels on Stewardship, p. 92, 1940). By addressing these challenges with transparency, education, and prayer, we can restore confidence in God’s system of stewardship. “And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not” (Galatians 6:9, KJV). “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven” (Matthew 5:16, KJV). Sr. White notes, “The system of tithes and offerings was intended to impress the minds of men with a great truth—that God is the source of every blessing” (Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 3, p. 405, 1875). “God’s plan in the tithing system is beautiful in its simplicity and equality” (Counsels on Stewardship, p. 73, 1940). In society, tithing serves as a countercultural act, emphasizing generosity over materialism. It teaches responsibility, cultivates gratitude, and fosters a sense of collective mission. By faithfully returning the tithe, believers demonstrate a commitment to God’s principles, inspiring others to follow. What personal transformation might tithing bring to your faith?

PERSONAL AND COMMUNAL BLESSINGS OF TITHING!

On a personal level, tithing has deepened my relationship with God. It reminds me of His provision and challenges me to trust Him fully. As a community, we find unity in this shared act of faith. Together, we uphold His work, support our ministers, and advance the gospel. “Blessed is the man that trusteth in the Lord, and whose hope the Lord is” (Jeremiah 17:7, KJV). “Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy” (1 Timothy 6:17, KJV). Sr. White writes, “The tithing system is a blessing to both the giver and the receiver” (Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 4, p. 472, 1880). “As we give, we receive; as we impart, we are blessed” (Counsels on Stewardship, p. 151, 1940). How might your own faith journey be transformed by embracing the sacred trust of tithing? Consider the blessings promised in Malachi and the opportunities to reflect God’s love through faithful stewardship. Let us return to Him, as Jeremiah 3:22 urges, and experience the healing and restoration He offers.

THE COVENANT OF TITHING!

Tithing is more than an obligation; it is a covenant, a reflection of God’s love, and a channel for His blessings. By understanding its sacred purpose, adhering to its intended use, and trusting in His system, we honor Him and participate in His mission.
