Song of Solomon 8:6-7: Set me as a seal upon thine heart, as a seal upon thine arm: for love is strong as death; jealousy is cruel as the grave: the coals thereof are coals of fire, which hath a most vehement flame. Many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it: if a man would give all the substance of his house for love, it would utterly be contemned.
ABSTRACT
Marriage transcends earthly agreements, emerging as God’s sacred covenant that demands unwavering commitment from us in the face of human weakness. Jesus, in Matthew 19, reaffirms the primal purity of this union by invoking Eden’s blueprint, allowing severance solely for unfaithfulness while condemning allowances born of stubborn wills. This holy alliance mirrors the steadfast devotion between Christ and His church, summoning us to cultivate unions rooted in sacrifice and mercy within a culture that discards bonds too readily. Through these teachings, we grasp marriage not as fleeting convenience but as divine reflection of eternal love, guiding our community toward faithful, resilient partnerships that honor heaven’s design.
DIVINE BONDS FORGED IN EDEN!
Marriage stands beyond a mere social pact, forming a divine covenant ordained by the Creator Himself. God established this profound union at creation, where He declared in Genesis 2:24 (KJV): “Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.” This declaration reveals God’s blueprint for oneness, unbreakable and reflective of His relational heart toward us. Ephesians 5:31 (KJV) echoes this truth: “For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.” Likewise, Malachi 2:16 (KJV) warns, “For the Lord, the God of Israel, saith that he hateth putting away: for one covereth violence with his garment, saith the Lord of hosts: therefore take heed to your spirit, that ye deal not treacherously.” Ellen G. White illuminates this eternal design: “God has ordained that there should be perfect love and harmony between those who enter into the marriage relation” (The Adventist Home, p. 15, 1952). Through inspired counsel, we learn further: “To gain a proper understanding of the marriage relation is the work of a lifetime. Those who marry enter a school from which they are never in this life to be graduated” (The Adventist Home, p. 179, 1952). These principles affirm that marriage weaves us into God’s tapestry of fidelity and joy. How, then, did Jesus redirect scrutiny on divorce back to paradise’s purity?
BACK TO EDEN’S SACRED DESIGN!
When Pharisees probed Jesus on divorce, He anchored permanence in creation’s narrative, proclaiming, “He which made them at the beginning made them male and female” (Matthew 19:4, KJV). This response underscores marriage’s origin not in human whim but in heavenly decree. He reinforced, “What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder” (Matthew 19:6, KJV). Mark 10:9 (KJV) parallels this command: “What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.” Proverbs 18:22 (KJV) celebrates the gift: “Whoso findeth a wife findeth a good thing, and obtaineth favour of the Lord.” A prophetic voice declares, “Instituted by God, marriage is a sacred ordinance and should never be entered upon in a spirit of selfishness” (Counsels for the Church, p. 151, 1972). In The Adventist Home, we read: “God celebrated the first marriage. Thus the institution has for its originator the Creator of the universe” (The Adventist Home, p. 26, 1952). Christ’s recall to Eden lifts marriage above fleeting customs, urging our community to cherish it as heaven’s enduring emblem. Yet, what surfaced when critics invoked Mosaic leniency against this ideal?
HEARTS HARDENED, GRACE CONCEDES!
Pharisees invoked Moses’ divorce provision, yet Jesus countered, “Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so” (Matthew 19:8, KJV). This allowance stemmed not from divine preference but from our unyielding wills. 1 Corinthians 7:10-11 (KJV) commands: “And unto the married I command, yet not I, but the Lord, Let not the wife depart from her husband: But and if she depart, let her remain unmarried, or be reconciled to her husband: and let not the husband put away his wife.” Ecclesiastes 9:9 (KJV) exhorts: “Live joyfully with the wife whom thou lovest all the days of the life of thy vanity, which he hath given thee under the sun, all the days of thy vanity: for that is thy portion in this life, and in thy labour which thou takest under the sun.” Through inspired writings, degeneracy’s toll unfolds: “Because of the degeneracy of the people a divorce law which was not in God’s original plan was permitted” (Selected Messages Book 3, p. 221, 1980). The Spirit of Prophecy adds: “This was not ideal, but a concession to hardness of heart” (Manuscript Releases, vol. 6, p. 360, 1993). Such mercy highlights God’s forbearance, yet beckons us toward His flawless vision of devoted, respectful unions. Does Scripture, however, outline any breach in this unbreakable chain?
FORNICATION’S SOLE SHADOW!
Jesus delineated one safeguard for marriage’s endurance: “Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery” (Matthew 19:9, KJV). This clause guards against betrayal’s shadow, preserving the covenant’s core amid betrayal’s pain. Luke 16:18 (KJV) intensifies: “Whosoever putteth away his wife, and marrieth another, committeth adultery: and whosoever marrieth her that is put away from her husband committeth adultery.” Deuteronomy 24:5 (KJV) honors the bond’s dawn: “When a man hath taken a new wife, he shall not go out to war, neither shall he be charged with any business: but he shall be free at home one year, and shall cheer up his wife which he hath taken.” Sr. White clarifies the boundary: “The only scriptural ground for severing the marriage relation is adultery” (The Adventist Home, p. 54, 1952). A passage from Thoughts on Christian Temperance reminds: “Divorce is never allowable except for adultery” (Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing, p. 64, 1896). This gravity steers us from hasty escapes, weighing every soul’s welfare in trials. In what profound way, though, does this covenant echo heaven’s own affections?
MIRRORING HEAVEN’S UNDYING LOVE!
Christ’s marriage doctrine unveils God’s love through spousal fidelity’s mirror. Marriage vividly portrays the Groom’s bond with His bride, demanding our steadfast mirroring of divine constancy. “What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder” (Matthew 19:6, KJV) seals this heavenly parallel. Ephesians 5:25 (KJV) directs: “Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it.” Hebrews 13:4 (KJV) upholds: “Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge.” In The Great Controversy, the enduring tie shines: “In the Bible the sacred and enduring character of the relation that exists between Christ and His church is represented by the union of marriage” (The Great Controversy, p. 381, 1888). The inspired pen affirms: “The husband should ever bear in mind that much is expected of the wife, and should endeavor to lighten her burdens” (The Adventist Home, p. 216, 1952). This likeness stirs us to infuse patience, pardon, and altruism into our ties, embodying the Almighty’s essence. How, in our era’s flux, might we enact these timeless mandates?
VOWS ALIVE IN TODAY’S BATTLE!
Today’s throwaway bonds clash with Christ’s summons to enduring vows, compelling our community to fortify unions via intercession, counsel, and daily wisdom. We rally around pairs, fostering Christ-infused ties against erosion. 1 Corinthians 7:39 (KJV) binds: “The wife is bound by the law as long as her husband liveth; but if her husband be dead, she is at liberty to be married to whom she will; only in the Lord.” We champion family-honoring measures, confronting betrayal, strife, and greed’s assaults. Role-based guidance urges: “Let a young man seek one to stand by his side who is fitted to bear her share of life’s burdens, one whose influence will ennoble and refine him” (Counsels for the Church, p. 109, 1972). Thematic insight flows: “It is only in Christ that a marriage alliance can be safely formed. Human love should draw its closest bonds from divine love” (Counsels for the Church, p. 112, 1972). Embodying these, we radiate God’s affection, safeguarding human connections per His blueprint. What ultimate summons, then, echoes from this divine framework?
SACRED SUMMONS TO FAITHFUL HEARTS!
Christ’s Matthew 19 divorce insights transcend edicts, beckoning us to God’s exalted path where marriage gleams as love’s covenant, forged in loyalty, yielding, and favor. We align our paths herein, drawing might from Scripture and fellowship’s embrace, advancing united in matrimony’s celestial aim. This verse crowns the theme: “Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it” (Ephesians 5:25, KJV). When sacred claims dawn fully, heaven endorses: “When the sacred nature and the claims of marriage are understood, it will even now be approved of Heaven; and the result will be happiness to both parties” (The Adventist Home, p. 344, 1952). Literary reflection seals: “Marriage is both a civil and religious ceremony, and is an institution of the highest order” (The Adventist Home, p. 27, 1952). Thus empowered, we stride as one toward matrimony’s everlasting horizon.
