SEALING: MARK OF HIS SERVANTS

Zechariah 9:16 “And the Lord their God shall save them in that day as the flock of his people: for they shall be as the stones of a crown, lifted up as an ensign upon his land.”

ABSTRACT

The seal of God is presented as a divine emblem of ownership, protection, and destiny, marking the faithful who embody humility, obedience, and love. Rooted in Scripture and Ellen G. White’s counsel, it calls believers to reflect Christ’s character, unite in truth, and stand firm in the final conflict. This sacred seal affirms God’s sovereignty, distinguishes His people from the rebellious, and assures eternal redemption through Christ’s righteousness. It is both privilege and responsibility, urging us to surrender daily, live faithfully, and mirror God’s love, for in the day of judgment the seal will determine our eternal destiny.

SEAL OF GOD: DIVINE MARK OF DESTINY

The seal of God marks the faithful with divine ownership, protection, and eternal purpose, distinguishing us in the final conflict between good and evil. Rooted in Scripture and inspired counsel, it calls us to humility, obedience, and unity under God’s sovereign love, preparing the community for redemption and the triumph of grace. As the inspired pen of Ellen G. White articulates, love is expressed in obedience, and perfect love casteth out all fear. Those who love God, have the seal of God in their foreheads, and work the works of God (Sons and Daughters of God, 51, 1894). Through prophetic insight, we are reminded that are we striving with all our God-given powers to reach the measure of the stature of men and women in Christ? Are we seeking for His fullness, ever reaching higher and higher, trying to attain to the perfection of His character? When God’s servants reach this point, they will be sealed in their foreheads (Selected Messages 3, 427, 1899). Set me as a seal upon thine heart, as a seal upon thine arm: for love is strong as death; jealousy is cruel as the grave: the coals thereof are coals of fire, which hath a most vehement flame (Song of Solomon 8:6, KJV). Bind up the testimony, seal the law among my disciples (Isaiah 8:16, KJV). This divine emblem underscores our sacred calling to embody His truth amid life’s trials.

The concept of the “seal of God” is a profound biblical theme that transcends religious boundaries. It highlights God’s ownership and the spiritual distinction between those who serve Him and those who do not. Drawing from Ezra 9:8, “And now for a little space grace hath been shewed from the LORD our God,” this article delves into how the seal reflects God’s love, our purpose, and our eternal destiny. Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed (John 6:27, KJV). Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity (2 Timothy 2:19, KJV). Ellen G. White writes, love is expressed in obedience, and perfect love casteth out all fear. Those who love God, have the seal of God in their foreheads, and work the works of God (Sons and Daughters of God, 51, 1894). A passage from Patriarchs and Prophets reminds us, the law of love being the foundation of the government of God, the happiness of all intelligent beings depends upon their perfect accord with its great principles of righteousness. God desires from all His creatures the service of love—service that springs from an appreciation of His character. He takes no pleasure in a forced obedience, and to all He grants freedom of will, that they may render Him voluntary service (Patriarchs and Prophets, 33-34, 1890). Through such divine assurance, we embrace a path of devoted service that echoes eternity. How might this profound mark illuminate the depths of divine affection in our daily walk?

SOVEREIGN SEAL: LOVE’S ETERNAL EMBLEM

The seal of God, as described in Revelation 14:1-5, represents a divine acknowledgment of faithfulness. It identifies those who stand steadfast in their devotion. Ellen G. White writes, “Missionary agencies are greatly needed in every branch of God’s work” (Bible Commentary, Vol. 7, p. 969). This underscores the need for commitment and action in spreading God’s truth. The seal symbolizes both ownership and divine love, reflecting God’s desire for all humanity to be redeemed. At its core, it is a testament to His sovereignty over creation and redemption. Every soul is God’s property. Sr. White confirms this truth: “Every soul in our world is the Lord’s property, by creation and by redemption” (Bible Commentary, Vol. 7, p. 969). This ownership invites us into a relationship rooted in His grace and mercy, as seen in His ultimate sacrifice. In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise (Ephesians 1:13, KJV). Saying, Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads (Revelation 7:3, KJV). Every manifestation of creative power is an expression of infinite love. The sovereignty of God involves fullness of blessing to all created beings (Christ Triumphant, 7, 1983). Through inspired counsel we are told, the history of the great conflict between good and evil, from the time it first began in heaven to the final overthrow of rebellion and the total eradication of sin, is also a demonstration of God’s unchanging love (Christ Triumphant, 7, 1983). Such profound truths awaken within us a fervent resolve to mirror His redeeming embrace. What hidden perils lurk when pride eclipses our path to divine favor?

HUMBLE HEARTS: SEALED FOR GLORY

Salvation is not granted by mere association with a faith community but through humility and submission. Sr. White cautions, “Even Satan, once a covering cherub, fell due to self-exaltation” (Bible Commentary, Vol. 7, p. 969). This sobering reminder illustrates the dangers of pride and rebellion. To receive the seal, one must embrace humility and obedience, choosing God’s ways over personal ambition. Consider this: How often do we strive for recognition or power, forgetting the higher call to serve? The seal of God reassures us that salvation is not earned through deeds but through surrender to His will. It reminds us of the importance of staying grounded in faith and humility, especially in a world that celebrates self-promotion. And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption (Ephesians 4:30, KJV). If I be not an apostle unto others, yet doubtless I am to you: for the seal of mine apostleship are ye in the Lord (1 Corinthians 9:2, KJV). We are to copy no human being. There is no human being wise enough to be our criterion. We are to look to the man Christ Jesus, who is complete in the perfection of righteousness and holiness. He is the author and finisher of our faith. He is the pattern man. His experience is the measure of the experience that we are to gain. His character is our model. Let us, then, take our minds off the perplexities and the difficulties of this life, and fix them on Him, that by beholding we may be changed into His likeness (Maranatha, 241, 1976). A prophetic voice once wrote, as wax takes the impression of the seal, so the soul is to take the impression of the Spirit of God and retain the image of Christ (Maranatha, 241, 1976). Humility thus forges our unyielding bond with the Divine. In what deliberate steps do we claim this sacred safeguard for our souls?

CHOOSE WISELY: CLAIM YOUR SEAL

The journey to receiving God’s seal requires intentionality. Sr. White emphasizes, “Our own course of action will determine whether we shall receive the seal of the living God or be cut down by the destroying weapons” (Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 5, p. 212). This stark warning highlights the significance of our choices. Will we align with God’s commands, or will we reject His authority? This truth invites introspection. Are our daily decisions drawing us closer to God or leading us away? The “destroying weapons” symbolize God’s final judgment, reminding us of the urgency to live faithfully. The seal offers protection and peace, contrasting the destruction awaiting those who choose rebellion. And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree; but only those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads (Revelation 9:4, KJV). Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts (2 Corinthians 1:22, KJV). Not all members of the church are cultivating personal piety; therefore they do not understand their personal responsibility. They do not realize that it is their privilege and duty to reach the high standard of Christian perfection (Maranatha, 212, 1976). The inspired pen declares, the seal of God will never be placed upon the forehead of an impure man or woman. It will never be placed upon the forehead of the ambitious, world-loving man or woman (Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 5, 214, 1889). Personal resolve shapes our eternal horizon. How does this emblem of protection stand against the storm of divine reckoning?

JUDGMENT DAY: SEAL OR DOOM?

The seal is not merely symbolic; it determines one’s eternal destiny. Those who reject God’s commandments will lack the protective seal during the time of final judgment. Revelation describes a time when the faithful will be distinguished from those who disregard divine authority. White’s writings affirm this reality: “Once the final judgments are poured out, it will be too late to repent” (Bible Commentary, Vol. 7, p. 969). This brings a crucial question to mind: Are we prepared for Christ’s return? The seal of God assures us of His guidance and protection during the coming trials. It reflects His unwavering love, offering us a chance to stand firm amid life’s uncertainties. And I saw another angel ascending from the east, having the seal of the living God: and he cried with a loud voice to the four angels, to whom it was given to hurt the earth and the sea (Revelation 7:2, KJV). Bind up the testimony, seal the law among my disciples (Isaiah 8:16, KJV). I saw that Jesus would not leave the most holy place until every case was decided either for salvation or destruction, and that the wrath of God could not come until Jesus had finished His work in the most holy place, laid off His priestly garment, and clothed Himself with garments of vengeance. Then Jesus will step out from between the Father and man, and the blessings of His intercession will then be removed from sinners (Early Writings, 48, 1882). Beside it stands our great high priest crowned and clothed in royal majesty, presenting on his breast plate the hundred and forty-four thousand now to be sealed with the seal of the living God (A Seal of the Living God, 19, 1849). Destiny hangs in the balance of our allegiance. How profoundly does this mark echo the boundless affection of the Creator?

LOVE’S SEAL: MIRROR DIVINE

How does the seal reflect God’s love? The seal demonstrates His deep desire for a personal relationship with humanity. As White notes, “Christ’s righteousness leads and protects those who are sealed” (Bible Commentary, Vol. 7, p. 969). God’s love is evident in His provision, guidance, and ultimate sacrifice for our salvation. The evidence is clear: God’s seal represents His commitment to save and transform. By living under His guidance, we embody His truth and love to the world. This reality calls us to a higher purpose, inspiring gratitude and devotion. Set me as a seal upon thine heart, as a seal upon thine arm: for love is strong as death; jealousy is cruel as the grave: the coals thereof are coals of fire, which hath a most vehement flame (Song of Solomon 8:6, KJV). And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption (Ephesians 4:30, KJV). Those who love God, have the seal of God in their foreheads, and work the works of God (Sons and Daughters of God, 51, 1894). In The Review and Herald we read, the principles of God’s law will dwell in the heart, and control the actions. It will then be as natural for us to seek purity and holiness, to shun the spirit and example of the world, and to seek to benefit all around us, as it is for the angels of glory to execute the mission of love assigned them (The Review and Herald, October 23, 1888). Love’s imprint transforms our very essence. What summons arises to rally as one under His banner of grace?

UNITE NOW: SEALED IN TRUTH

The seal of God is a call to unite under His banner of truth and grace. It challenges us to rise above societal divisions and live as representatives of His love. As a community, we must encourage one another to remain steadfast. Together, we reflect His glory, preparing for the day when the faithful will stand before Him. The seal of God is both a privilege and a responsibility. It marks a life surrendered to His will, reflecting His infinite love and grace. As we contemplate our spiritual journey, let us ask: Are we living in a way that honors His sacrifice? May we seek His seal, embracing the promise of redemption and eternal life. In a little while every one who is a child of God will have His seal placed upon him. O that it may be placed upon our foreheads! Who can endure the thought of being passed by when the angel goes forth to seal the servants of God in their foreheads? (The Review and Herald, May 28, 1889). Through inspired counsel, if the light of truth has been presented to you, revealing the Sabbath of the fourth commandment, and showing that there is no foundation in the Word of God for Sunday observance, and yet you still cling to the false sabbath, refusing to keep holy the Sabbath which God calls ‘my holy day,’ you receive the mark of the beast (Evangelism, 235, 1946). Unity forges our collective witness to His eternal reign. In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise (Ephesians 1:13, KJV).
