SEALING: THE FOUR ANGELS AND GLOBAL PEACE

“And after these things I saw four angels standing on the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth.” — Revelation 7:1

ABSTRACT

In this article, we delve into the gripping biblical vision of four angels restraining the fierce winds of global strife and catastrophe, as revealed in Revelation 7, highlighting divine mercy’s pause until the sealing of God’s faithful is finished. Christ’s intercession buys precious time for our preparation amid mounting end-time tensions, while the urgent call to spiritual purity echoes through prophetic symbols of war, judgment, and redemption. As heavenly sentinels hold back chaos, we confront the solemn reality that readiness, not worldly events, heralds the storm’s release, urging our community toward unwavering faith in God’s protective plan.

ANGELS HOLDING THE WINDS! HEAVEN RESTRAINS THE STORM!

In a world teetering on the edge of disaster, it is not political treaties or military strength that restrains global destruction, but four angels stationed at earth’s corners. These celestial sentinels prevent the winds—representing strife, war, and disaster—from blowing until God’s servants are sealed, as inspired counsel from Ellen G. White affirms in her vivid portrayal of divine oversight. “John sees the elements of nature—earthquake, tempest, and political strife—represented as being held by four angels. These winds are under control until God gives the word to let them go” (Testimonies to Ministers, p. 444, 1923). In measure, when it shooteth forth, thou wilt debate with it: he stayeth his rough wind in the day of the east wind (Isaiah 27:8, KJV). The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance (2 Peter 3:9, KJV). Four mighty angels are still holding the four winds of the earth. Terrible destruction is forbidden to come in full (Maranatha, p. 175, 1976). Angels are now restraining the winds of strife, until the world shall be warned of its coming doom; but a storm is gathering, ready to burst upon the earth, and when God shall bid His angels loose the winds, there will be such a scene of strife as no pen can picture (Maranatha, p. 156, 1976). “The Lord has shown me that some of His children would fear when they see the signs of the Son of man appearing in the heavens. But they need not, for the same Jesus that loved them enough to die for them will come again, and angels will shield them” (Early Writings, p. 285, 1882). This divine holding action is not permanent, for what fierce symbols do these winds unleash upon the nations in prophetic warning?

THE WINDS OF WAR: SYMBOLS OF END-TIME UPHEAVAL

The Scriptures identify winds as symbols of destructive forces among nations. Jeremiah foresaw the rise of Babylon through a “destroying wind” (Jeremiah 51:1), asserting heaven’s sovereign control over earthly turmoil. Revelation reveals that before the final judgments fall, these winds will be restrained, as a prophetic voice once wrote with urgent clarity. “It is God that restrains the powers. The angels have not let go, for the saints are not all sealed” (The Present Truth, vol. 1, no. 3, 1849). And the angel answered and said unto me, These are the four spirits of the heavens, which go forth from standing before the Lord of all the earth (Zechariah 6:5, KJV). Daniel spake and said, I saw in my vision by night, and, behold, the four winds of the heaven strove upon the great sea (Daniel 7:2, KJV). The sealing time is very short, and will soon be over. Now is the time, while the four angels are holding the four winds, to make our calling and election sure (Early Writings, p. 58, 1882). I saw that the four angels would hold the four winds until Jesus’ work was done in the sanctuary, and then will come the seven last plagues (Early Writings, p. 38, 1882). “The four angels are holding the four winds that a special work may be accomplished: the saints of God are to be sealed in their foreheads” (Review and Herald, June 7, 1887). God’s remnant are being prepared while storms of strife build beneath the surface, so how does our Savior’s plea extend mercy in this precarious balance?

MERCY LINGERS: THE PLEA OF THE INTERCEDING CHRIST

At the brink of global collapse, Jesus intercedes for the unsealed, delaying judgment. In vision, Sr. White saw our Savior pleading with the Father to hold the winds until His people are sealed, revealing the depth of heavenly compassion amid impending doom. While they had started on their mission to let them go, the merciful eye of Jesus gazed on the remnant that were not all sealed, then He raised His hands to the Father and plead with Him that He had spilled His blood for them (The Present Truth, vol. 1, no. 3, 1849). And he saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then he arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm. But the men marvelled, saying, What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him? (Matthew 8:26-27, KJV). For he remembered that they were but flesh; a wind that passeth away, and cometh not again (Psalm 78:39, KJV). Men cannot discern the sentinel angels restraining the four winds that they shall not blow until the servants of God are sealed; but no one can mistake that day for the common work of men (Christian Service, p. 228, 1925). The four winds of the earth will be held until the angels shall have sealed the servants of God in their foreheads (Evangelism, p. 697, 1946). “The time of trouble—trouble such as was not since there was a nation—is right upon us, and we are like the sleeping virgins. We are to awake and ask the Lord Jesus to place underneath us His everlasting arms, and carry us through the time of trial before us” (Manuscript Releases, vol. 8, p. 347, 1980). It is Christ’s love that holds back destruction, not because the wicked deserve it, but because the righteous are not yet sealed, raising the vital question of what precedes this unleashing?

SEALING FIRST, THEN THE STORM

The sealing of God’s people is a precondition for the release of the four winds. Only those who have sighed and cried for the abominations in the land will be protected (Ezekiel 9:4), underscoring purity as the mark of divine safeguard. “The seal of God will never be placed upon the forehead of an impure man or woman… All who receive the seal must be without spot before God—candidates for heaven” (Testimonies for the Church, vol. 5, p. 216, 1889), as a passage from the inspired writings emphasizes our call to holiness. Saying to the sixth angel which had the trumpet, Loose the four angels which are bound in the great river Euphrates (Revelation 9:14, KJV). For I, saith the Lord, will be unto her a wall of fire round about, and will be the glory in the midst of her (Zechariah 2:5, KJV). John saw sealing messengers going forth with “the seal of the living God,” which cried, “injure not”, or in other words, hold! the four winds must not be let loose till the angels shall have sealed the servants of God in their foreheads (Early Writings, p. 39, 1882). The four mighty angels who were holding the four winds of the earth were about to let go the winds, when another angel came from the presence of God, crying, Hold! Hold the winds! Let not one of them blow until we shall have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads (Early Writings, p. 38, 1882). “Just before we entered it [the time of trouble], we all received the seal of the living God. Then I saw the four angels cease to hold the four winds” (Seventh-day Adventist Bible Commentary, vol. 7, p. 968, 1957). This solemn truth reminds us that we are not waiting for world events, but for the spiritual readiness of God’s people, yet how does this restraint align with the broader prophetic timeline?

PROPHETIC ANTI-TYPE: A SUSPENDED STORM BEFORE JUDGMENT

The antitypical fulfillment of the four angels holding the winds corresponds to the final scenes in Revelation and Matthew 24, where judgment is held back until the gospel has gone to all nations (Matthew 24:14). Revelation 7:1-3 describes the suspension of judgment until God’s sealing is complete, affirming the intricate weave of end-time prophecies. “The angel with the seal of the living God is therefore the same as the third angel of chapter 14” (Daniel and Revelation, p. 444). And then shall he send his angels, and shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from the uttermost part of the earth to the uttermost part of heaven (Mark 13:27, KJV). And he shall set up an ensign for the nations, and shall assemble the outcasts of Israel, and gather together the dispersed of Judah from the four corners of the earth (Isaiah 11:12, KJV). Through inspired counsel we are told, Then I saw the four angels cease to hold the four winds. And I saw famine, pestilence and sword, nation rose against nation, and the world was filled with the wrath of God (Last Day Events, p. 259, 1992). A prophetic voice reminds us, I saw that the four angels would hold the four winds until Jesus’ work was done in the sanctuary, and then will come the seven last plagues. The seal of the living God is upon His people (Last Day Events, p. 123, 1992). “Angels are belting the world, refusing Satan his claims… with sleepless vigilance they are keeping the armies of Satan at bay till the sealing of God’s people shall be accomplished” (In Heavenly Places, p. 98, 1967). In Daniel 12:1, Michael stands up, and the time of trouble begins. These angels hold the winds until that moment, giving space for the loud cry and the final call out of Babylon. This is our moment of mercy before the final storm breaks.
