DIVINE LAWS: A PATH TO WHOLENESS

1 Peter 2:11: “Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul.”

ABSTRACT

Health reform stands as a vital branch of the third angel’s message, linking physical vitality with spiritual readiness for Christ’s return. Scripture affirms that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, bought with a price (1 Corinthians 6:19–20, KJV), while John’s prayer blesses us with prosperity in health and soul (3 John 1:2, KJV). Inspired counsel emphasizes that obedience to natural and divine laws fosters clarity of mind, freedom from indulgence, and harmony with heaven. Through diet, temperance, fasting, and obedience, believers are prepared for immortality, reflecting God’s design of integrated wholeness. True reform is not a burden but a blessing, strengthening the body, uplifting the spirit, and uniting God’s people as living witnesses to His restorative grace.

HEALTH REFORM: HEALTH HEROES UNITE!

Health reform emerges as an indispensable branch of the third angel’s message, closely linking physical vitality with spiritual readiness for Christ’s return. Ellen G. White highlights its profound role in preparing a people for the Lord, weaving together obedience to natural laws and divine principles to foster wholeness in body and soul. This reform counters Satan’s deceptions by promoting freedom from indulgences that impair our connection to God, inviting us into a life of abundant health that mirrors heavenly harmony. As inspired counsel affirms, the health reform God has given is designed to prepare a people for translation, fitting them for immortality (Counsels on Health, p. 576, 1923). Scripture reinforces this harmony, declaring, “What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s” (1 Corinthians 6:19-20, KJV). Through such guidance, a passage from Healthful Living reminds us that living in harmony with natural laws enables us to attain perfect health of body and mind and soul (Healthful Living, p. 21, 1897). Health reform is a vital aspect of spiritual truth, blending physical and spiritual well-being into a cohesive practice. Ellen G. White emphasizes its significance, asserting, “Abstain from fleshly lusts which war against the soul” (Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 1, p. 546). Despite initial resistance, health reform is a blessing, not a burden. Satan distorts its purpose to discourage acceptance, yet it offers freedom from physical and spiritual hindrances—how exactly do these indulgences cloud our spiritual clarity and burden the body?

THE IMPACT ON SOUL AND BODY

Indulgences in harmful substances directly impede our spiritual progress by fostering guilt and dulling our perception of divine truths. Sr. White connects health reform with spiritual clarity: “Some are indulging lustful appetites which war against the soul and are a constant hindrance to their spiritual advancement” (Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 1, p. 548). Substances like tea, tobacco, and flesh foods often lead to guilt and spiritual struggle, clouding the mind and hindering appreciation of eternal truths. Sr. White refutes claims that abandoning such habits harms health, calling it Satan’s deception. Overtaxing the stomach emerges as a common yet grave sin that burdens the entire system and weakens resolve (Counsels on Diet and Foods, p. 210, 1938). Clearly, walking in the Spirit prevents fulfillment of fleshly lusts, as Paul urges (Galatians 5:16, KJV). A thematic insight reveals that all suffer when health yields to lustful appetites, passing weaknesses even to future generations (Selected Messages, Book 2, p. 417, 1958). A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones (Proverbs 17:22, KJV). Through these patterns, we recognize how unchecked appetites erode both physical vigor and soul’s elevation.

HEALTH AND OBEDIENCE

Divine healing always intertwines with calls to align life under God’s commandments, revealing health as a fruit of faithful adherence. Jesus’ teachings affirm the relationship between health and obedience to God’s laws. When Christ healed a blind man by anointing his eyes with clay and instructing him to wash in the pool of Siloam (John 9:7), He demonstrated the harmony of divine power and natural remedies. Similarly, He warned a healed man, “Sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee” (John 5:14), linking health with spiritual well-being. Sr. White reflects on Exodus 15:26, where God promises Israel protection from disease if they obey His laws, highlighting that many illnesses arise from disregarding these principles. The inspired pen declares our primary duty—to God, ourselves, and others—lies in obeying laws that encompass health (Counsels on Diet and Foods, p. 17, 1938). Fear of the Lord and departure from evil bring health to the core and marrow (Proverbs 3:7-8, KJV). In Healthful Living, counsel urges that carelessness in physical habits sins against God Himself (Healthful Living, p. 60, 1897). If thou shalt hearken diligently unto the voice of the Lord thy God, to observe and to do all his commandments… all these blessings shall come on thee, and overtake thee (Deuteronomy 28:1-2, KJV). Obeying these integrated laws unlocks protection and prosperity in every dimension.

NUTRITION AND STRENGTH

God’s original provision for sustenance fully equips humanity with all needed elements for robust vitality, debunking reliance on animal sources. Sr. White challenges the belief that animal products are essential for strength. She states, “The simple grains, fruits of the trees, and vegetables have all the nutritive properties necessary to make good blood” (Medical Ministry, p. 277). A plant-based diet not only supports health but also aligns with God’s natural laws. As she advises, we should lead by example, practicing and teaching health reform to inspire others (Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 6, p. 112). Grains, fruits, nuts, and vegetables form the Creator’s chosen diet, prepared simply for optimal benefit (Counsels on Diet and Foods, p. 364, 1938). At the end of ten days their countenances appeared fairer and fatter in flesh than all the children which did eat the portion of the king’s meat (Daniel 1:15, KJV). Role-based guidance affirms meat holds no necessity for health or strength, or else divine provision erred in Eden (Testimony Studies on Diet and Foods, p. 62, 1925). And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed… and every tree… to you it shall be for meat (Genesis 1:29, KJV). Embracing this bountiful array sustains vigor while honoring the Creator’s wise design.

FASTING FOR SPIRITUAL CLARITY

Intentional abstinence sharpens focus on eternal priorities, subduing earthly distractions to heighten divine communion. Fasting, as explained by White, involves “abstinence from every stimulating kind of food, and the proper use of wholesome, simple food, which God has provided in abundance” (Counsels on Diet and Foods, p. 90). It benefits both body and spirit, fostering focus on God rather than physical cravings. This practice nurtures a deeper connection with the divine. The spirit of true fasting yields mind, heart, and will wholly to God (Counsels on Diet and Foods, p. 189, 1938). Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens… and that ye break every yoke (Isaiah 58:6, KJV). Through inspired counsel, we learn that proper fasting clears the mind for clearer reception of heavenly light (Manuscript Releases, vol. 18, p. 281, 1890). Therefore also now, saith the Lord, turn ye even to me with all your heart, and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning (Joel 2:12, KJV). Such disciplined restraint elevates the soul toward unclouded fellowship with the Eternal.

VEGETARIANISM AS A TEST OF FELLOWSHIP

Committed adherence to plant-based living signals profound surrender to heavenly directives, strengthening bonds within the faith community. Adopting vegetarianism goes beyond personal health; it reflects obedience to God’s health principles. Sr. White identifies vegetarianism as a test of fellowship, reinforcing commitment to divine guidance. This choice embodies faith and aligns with biblical principles and health reform practices. We must not elevate flesh avoidance as a fellowship barrier, yet weigh its influence on others’ perceptions (Counsels on Diet and Foods, p. 400, 1938). Righteousness shall go forth as a strong nation, and the Lord shall be thine everlasting light when health springs forth through obedient paths (Isaiah 58:8, KJV). A prophetic voice stresses that denying selfish appetites develops all powers for service (Shall We Use Flesh Foods?, p. 339, 1905). For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come (1 Timothy 4:8, KJV). This principled stand fortifies unity and exemplifies transformative obedience.

CONCLUSION

Embracing divine health principles liberates us toward integrated flourishing, where bodily stewardship amplifies soul’s radiance. Health reform is not an unnecessary burden but a spiritual mandate. Sr. White’s teachings reveal the profound connection between physical choices and spiritual well-being. By embracing health reform, we can experience a fuller, more vibrant relationship with God. It is a path to wholeness, guiding individuals to live as God intended. In Testimonies for the Church, a call rings out for health reform’s message to echo in every assembly, awakening collective purpose (Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 6, p. 261, 1900). Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily (Isaiah 58:8, KJV). Literary wisdom in The Ministry of Healing underscores broad principles of reform that elevate both temple and spirit (The Ministry of Healing, p. 127, 1905). Godliness, with its promises for present and future life, far surpasses mere physical discipline (1 Timothy 4:8, KJV). This sacred integration propels us into lives of purposeful vitality.

3 John 1:2 (KJV) captures the essence of this truth: “Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.”
