HUMANITY’S PART: SACRIFICING FOR SERVICE

Acts 1:8  “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.”

ABSTRACT

The Christian journey emphasizes giving and serving others as a vital expression of witnessing for Christ. Acts 1:8 underscores that we must first be witnesses to effectively share the gospel. Sr. White stresses this, stating, “God’s people should now make mighty intercession to Him for help. It is the privilege of every believer, first to talk with God, and then, as God’s mouthpiece, to talk with others” (Advent Review and Sabbath Herald, p. 6, 1902). This highlights that our ability to share spiritual light depends on daily communion with God. “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you” (Matthew 6:33, KJV). “And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature” (Mark 16:15, KJV). Sr. White further notes, “The followers of Christ are to be the light of the world; but God does not bid them make an effort to shine. He bids them let their light shine” (Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing, p. 41, 1896). She also writes, “As you work for others, the divine light will shine upon you” (The Ministry of Healing, p. 144, 1905). Daily communion with God equips us to share His light, making our witness effective. How can we embody this humility in service to others?

HUMILITY IN WITNESSING

Witnessing for Christ avoids self-glorification, focusing instead on humble service. Sr. White states, “Men who are self-important…overlook these humble, contrite workers; but not for one moment does God lose sight of them” (Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 7, p. 26, 1902). God honors those who serve humbly, reflecting Christ’s character. “Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves” (Philippians 2:3, KJV). “And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant” (Matthew 20:27, KJV). Sr. White affirms, “The humblest workers, who follow the example of Christ, will be rewarded in the courts above” (The Desire of Ages, p. 637, 1898). She also writes, “The reward of the faithful will be according to their works, not according to the estimate of men” (Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 5, p. 279, 1885). Humble service mirrors Christ’s example, ensuring our efforts align with divine approval. What mindset is required to sustain this sacred work?

SACRIFICE IN SOUL-WINNING

Soul-winning demands a spirit of sacrifice, connecting us to Christ’s sufferings. Mark 10:38-39 calls us to embrace Christ’s sufferings, symbolizing total commitment to the gospel. Sr. White writes, “Some of the servants of God have given up their lives to spend and be spent for the cause of God…Yet just such ones think they have a hard time, because they have never experienced hardships” (Gospel Workers, pp. 249-250, 1915). “And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me” (Luke 9:23, KJV). “Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind” (1 Peter 4:1, KJV). Sr. White elaborates, “The true missionary spirit is a spirit of sacrifice” (Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 3, p. 406, 1875). She also notes, “Self-denial and the cross lie directly in the pathway of every follower of Christ” (The Acts of the Apostles, p. 566, 1911). This commitment distinguishes true disciples from those complacent in faith. How does spiritual resilience shape our witness?

RESILIENCE AS CHRIST’S SOLDIERS

Enduring hardship as “good soldiers of Christ” (2 Timothy 2:3, KJV) strengthens our witness. Sr. White urges, “Gird on the whole armor, and are willing to endure hardness as a good soldier of the cross of Christ” (Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 2, pp. 150-151, 1868). Without resilience, opportunities to win souls are lost. “Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil” (Ephesians 6:11, KJV). “Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong” (1 Corinthians 16:13, KJV). Sr. White emphasizes, “The soldier of the cross must be strong in the strength of God” (The Ministry of Healing, p. 493, 1905). She also writes, “Those who are fighting the good fight of faith will not be left to fight alone” (Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 6, p. 401, 1900). Spiritual fortitude ensures we remain steadfast in sharing the gospel. How does this commitment prepare us for the kingdom of heaven?

PREPARATION FOR THE KINGDOM

Entering the kingdom of heaven requires a spirit of sacrifice and resilience. Sr. White asserts, “Let the gospel message ring through our churches, summoning them to universal action…Putting on the armor of heaven, they will go forth to the warfare, willing to do and dare for God” (Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 7, p. 14, 1902). This urgency calls for active engagement. “Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city” (Revelation 22:14, KJV). “Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day” (2 Timothy 4:8, KJV). Sr. White writes, “The church is God’s appointed agency for the salvation of men” (The Acts of the Apostles, p. 9, 1911). She also notes, “Those who take up their appointed work will receive divine power” (The Desire of Ages, p. 672, 1898). Active participation equips us for God’s mission. How can we practically carry out this ministry?

PRACTICAL MINISTRY

The journey to serve begins with living as Christ’s witnesses, reflecting His light through humility and resilience. Sr. White’s writings show that those sacrificing for the gospel will be honored in heaven. “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them” (Ephesians 2:10, KJV). “And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not” (Galatians 6:9, KJV). Sr. White states, “Every act of self-sacrifice for the good of others strengthens the spirit of benevolence” (The Desire of Ages, p. 642, 1898). She also writes, “The work of God in the earth is to be carried forward by those who love Him” (Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 9, p. 117, 1909). This call demands courage and determination to live out the gospel.

“But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth” (Acts 1:8, KJV).
