Proverbs 31:26″She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness.”
ABSTRACT
This article explores the vital role of women in advancing the gospel, emphasizing their indispensable contributions to ministry through the biblical example of Abigail’s decisive and courageous actions. Drawing from Scripture and the writings of Ellen G. White, it underscores the importance of women’s involvement in spreading the truth, highlighting their unique ability to connect with communities and foster spiritual growth. The discussion extends to the necessity of prompt and decisive action in fulfilling God’s work, illustrating how such qualities align with divine guidance and contribute to the church’s mission.
WOMEN’S SACRED SERVICE
Women have historically played a significant role in advancing the gospel, and their contributions to ministry are not only valuable but essential. Ellen G. White has highlighted the importance of women in gospel ministry. She asserts that women can be powerful instruments of righteousness, rendering holy service just as men do. We will explore the crucial role of women in ministry, using the example of Abigail from the Bible as an illustration of decisive and courageous action, and transitions to discussing the importance of decision and decisive action in fulfilling God’s work. The Bible affirms this truth in Galatians 3:28, KJV: “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.” Sr. White supports this, stating, “The Lord has a work for women as well as for men. They may take their places in His work at this crisis, and He will work through them” (Evangelism, p. 472, 1946). Furthermore, 1 Peter 3:4, KJV, commends “the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price,” emphasizing the value of women’s spiritual contributions. Sr. White adds, “Women can be the instruments of righteousness, rendering holy service” (Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 6, p. 118, 1900). These insights establish the foundation for recognizing women’s sacred service. How can we further understand the unique influence women bring to gospel ministry?
WOMEN’S UNIQUE INFLUENCE IN MINISTRY
Women possess a unique ability to advance the gospel through their compassionate and nurturing influence. Sr. White emphasizes the vital role of women in spreading the gospel, suggesting that their involvement is not only necessary but can sometimes surpass that of men. In her writings, she states, “There are women who should labor in the gospel ministry. In many respects, they would do better than the ministers who neglect to visit the flock of God” (Evangelism, p. 472, 1946). This underscores the unique influence women can have in ministry, particularly when they engage with the community and provide the personal care that some male ministers might overlook. Sr. White further argues that if more women were involved in gospel work, “we should see many more converted to the truth” (Second Advent Review and Sabbath Herald, January 2, 1879). The Bible supports this in Romans 16:1-2, KJV: “I commend unto you Phebe our sister, which is a servant of the church which is at Cenchrea: That ye receive her in the Lord, as becometh saints, and that ye assist her in whatsoever business she hath need of you: for she hath been a succourer of many, and of myself also.” Additionally, Acts 18:26, KJV, notes, “And he [Apollos] began to speak boldly in the synagogue: whom when Aquila and Priscilla had heard, they took him unto them, and expounded unto him the way of God more perfectly,” highlighting women’s teaching roles. Sr. White reinforces this, stating, “Women who are willing to consecrate some of their time to the service of the Lord should be appointed to visit the sick, look after the young, and minister to the necessities of the poor” (Review and Herald, July 9, 1895). She also writes, “The refining, softening influence of Christian women is needed in the great work of preaching the truth” (Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 9, p. 120, 1909). These scriptures and insights affirm that women’s involvement fosters spiritual growth within the community. What does Abigail’s example reveal about women’s capacity for decisive leadership?
ABIGAIL’S EXAMPLE OF DECISIVE LEADERSHIP
Abigail’s story illustrates the power of a woman acting decisively in alignment with God’s will. The biblical example of Abigail serves as a powerful illustration of a woman who took decisive action in a critical moment, demonstrating the kind of leadership and wisdom that Sr. White advocates for in her writings. Abigail, the wife of Nabal, acted swiftly and independently to prevent a disaster that could have destroyed her household. According to Sr. White, Abigail “saw that something must be done to avert the result of Nabal’s fault, and that she must take the responsibility of acting immediately without the counsel of her husband” (Manuscript Releases, Vol. 21, p. 213, 1990). Abigail’s actions were not only brave but were also in line with God’s will, as evidenced by the fact that “Abigail’s course in this matter was one that God approved, and the circumstance revealed in her a noble spirit and character” (Manuscript Releases, Vol. 21, pp. 213-214, 1990). The Bible supports this in 1 Samuel 25:32-33, KJV: “And David said to Abigail, Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, which sent thee this day to meet me: And blessed be thy advice, and blessed be thou, which hast kept me this day from coming to shed blood, and from avenging myself with mine own hand.” Additionally, Proverbs 31:26, KJV, states, “She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness,” reflecting Abigail’s character. Sr. White further notes, “Her quick perception and ready tact saved her household from disaster” (Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 667, 1890). She also writes, “God gave her wisdom to know how to act in an emergency, and courage to carry out her plans” (Signs of the Times, October 31, 1900). Abigail’s example shows us that women, guided by divine wisdom, can lead with courage and decisiveness. How does decisive action apply more broadly to fulfilling God’s work?
DECISIVE ACTION IN GOD’S WORK
Decisive action is essential for us to fulfill God’s work effectively. Sr. White often emphasized the importance of making prompt and decisive decisions in the work of the ministry. She noted that those who hesitate or delay in carrying out God’s instructions may miss opportunities to do good. Sr. White writes, “There are circumstances under which it is proper for a woman to act promptly and independently, moving with decision in the way she knows to be the way of the Lord” (Manuscript Releases, Vol. 21, pp. 214-215, 1990). This statement underscores the idea that decision-making in the service of God is not only about knowing what is right but also about acting on that knowledge without delay. The Bible affirms this in James 1:22, KJV: “But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.” Likewise, Ecclesiastes 9:10, KJV, urges, “Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.” Sr. White further counsels, “We must pray most earnestly, ‘Lord, help us to help one another.’ Self must be buried with Christ, and we must be baptized with the Holy Spirit of God” (Evangelism, p. 472, 1946). She also states, “Promptness in following the leadings of the Spirit of God is of the greatest importance” (Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 5, p. 134, 1882). These teachings emphasize that decisive action, guided by the Holy Spirit, is critical for us to advance God’s mission. How does decisive action impact the collective progress of the community?
IMPACT OF DECISIVE ACTION ON THE COMMUNITY
Decisive action strengthens the community’s progress in fulfilling God’s mission. The ability to make prompt, clear, and guided decisions is a hallmark of effective leadership and ministry. Sr. White’s writings highlight that decision-making and decisive action are not only crucial for individual spiritual growth but also for the collective progress of the church. The Bible supports this in Hebrews 10:24-25, KJV: “And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.” Additionally, Philippians 2:4, KJV, instructs, “Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others,” emphasizing collective responsibility. Sr. White notes, “The church of Christ is in need of loyal, devoted workers who will not hesitate to act when the Spirit of God prompts” (Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 7, p. 19, 1902). She further writes, “Every true disciple is born into the kingdom of God as a missionary” (The Desire of Ages, p. 195, 1898). These scriptures and insights reveal that decisive action fosters unity and progress within the community.
“Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies” (Proverbs 31:10, KJV).
