PLAN OF REDEMPTION: PASSION FOR THE GOSPEL

Acts 5:42 “And daily in the temple, and in every house, they ceased not to teach and preach Jesus Christ.”

ABSTRACT

The community finds inspiration in the early disciples’ fervent passion for spreading the gospel, as described in this article. Their zeal, rooted in deep communion with Christ and empowered by the Holy Spirit, serves as a model for us to cultivate a similar dedication to God’s mission through prayer, surrender, and active service.

BURNING ZEAL OF THE EARLY DISCIPLES

The early disciples of Christ were driven by an intense and fervent passion that propelled them to spread the gospel to the farthest reaches of the earth. This burning zeal, described in Testimonies for the Church (Vol. 7, pp. 31-32, 1902), was not a mere fleeting emotion but a deep-seated, all-encompassing benevolence that consumed their hearts and minds. Their desire to glorify God through the cross of Christ was so profound that it overshadowed all other ambitions. This intense longing to save souls and add to the church reflected a commitment to fulfilling the Great Commission, which Christ had entrusted to them. The disciples’ dedication serves as a powerful example of the transformative power of the Holy Spirit when individuals fully surrender to God’s will. Scripture affirms this in Acts 1:8, KJV: “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.” Likewise, Romans 12:11, KJV, states, “Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord.” Sr. White further emphasizes, “The disciples were to be colaborers with their Redeemer in the work of saving souls” (The Desire of Ages, p. 297, 1898). She adds, “The Spirit of Christ, working upon the heart, makes it a missionary heart” (Gospel Workers, p. 470, 1915). The disciples’ passion challenges us to prioritize God’s mission in our lives. How can we cultivate such fervent zeal in our daily walk with Christ?

COMMUNION WITH CHRIST

The disciples’ unwavering devotion to Christ was not an inherent quality but rather a product of sincere and humble communion with Him. Sr. White highlights this process, emphasizing that “By the grace of Christ the apostles were made what they were” (Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 7, p. 32, 1902). This underscores the importance of a consistent and sincere prayer life in cultivating a close relationship with Christ. The apostles’ experiences reveal that their ability to carry out their mission stemmed directly from their prayerful dependence on God. Their commitment to prayer and communion with Christ led to the endowment of the Holy Spirit, which empowered them to preach the gospel with boldness and effectiveness, ultimately resulting in the salvation of many souls and the establishment of numerous churches. Philippians 4:6, KJV, instructs, “Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.” Similarly, Colossians 4:2, KJV, urges, “Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving.” Sr. White writes, “Prayer is the key in the hand of faith to unlock heaven’s storehouse” (Steps to Christ, p. 94, 1892). She also notes, “Through sincere prayer we are brought into connection with the mind of the Infinite” (The Ministry of Healing, p. 509, 1905). This communion equips us to fulfill God’s mission with power. What role does prayer play in empowering us for God’s service?

IMPACT OF THE APOSTLES’ MINISTRY

The apostles’ success in spreading the gospel lies in the profound impact of their ministry. As Sr. White (1902) notes, the disciples “went forth, weighted with the burden of saving souls, filled with zeal to extend the triumphs of the cross” (Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 7, p. 32, 1902). This statement reflects the deep responsibility they felt toward their mission and their determination to ensure that the message of salvation reached all corners of the earth. Their zeal was not driven by personal ambition but by a genuine concern for the eternal destiny of others. The apostles’ ministry serves as a testament to the transformative power of the Holy Spirit and the effectiveness of a life wholly dedicated to God’s service. Their success in bringing many from darkness to light and raising up churches across various regions is a direct result of their unwavering commitment to the gospel. Acts 4:31, KJV, recounts, “And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness.” Likewise, 2 Timothy 1:7, KJV, declares, “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” Sr. White affirms, “The work of God in this earth can never be finished except by the power of the Holy Spirit” (The Acts of the Apostles, p. 50, 1911). She adds, “Those who consecrate their lives to God’s service will be endowed with power from on high” (Christ’s Object Lessons, p. 327, 1900). Their example inspires us to serve with similar dedication. How can we ensure our actions reflect the same burden for souls?

MODEL OF ZEAL FOR US

The burning zeal that filled the hearts of the disciples is a model for us. Their intense desire to glorify God and spread the message of the cross was born out of sincere devotion, humble prayer, and close communion with Christ. The apostles’ success in their mission was a testament to the power of the Holy Spirit working through individuals who are fully surrendered to God. As we reflect on their example, we are reminded of the importance of cultivating a deep and sincere relationship with Christ, allowing the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with the same zeal and passion that motivated the early disciples. We need to consider what loyalty to Christ demands of each church member, it is essential to recognize that this burning zeal must be coupled with a steadfast commitment to living out the principles of the gospel in our daily lives. 1 Corinthians 15:58, KJV, encourages, “Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord.” Likewise, Galatians 6:9, KJV, states, “And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.” Sr. White writes, “A revival of true godliness among us is the greatest and most urgent of all our needs” (Selected Messages, Book 1, p. 121, 1958). She further notes, “The life of the true believer reveals an indwelling Saviour” (Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 6, p. 443, 1901). This zeal calls us to active faith and service. How can we embody the gospel in our daily interactions?

LIVING THE GOSPEL THROUGH ACTION

This commitment demands that we not only proclaim the message of Christ but also embody it through our actions and interactions with others. Living out the gospel requires us to reflect Christ’s love and character in every aspect of our lives, from our words to our deeds. The apostles demonstrated this by their selfless service and unwavering dedication to God’s mission. John 13:35, KJV, states, “By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.” Similarly, James 2:17, KJV, affirms, “Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.” Sr. White emphasizes, “The strongest argument in favor of the gospel is a loving and lovable Christian” (The Ministry of Healing, p. 470, 1905). She also writes, “The life of Christ in the soul is a wellspring of love, flowing out in good works” (Christ’s Object Lessons, p. 416, 1900). By living out the gospel, we become beacons of God’s truth and love, drawing others to Him. How can our lives reflect the transformative power of the gospel to those around us?

“Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost” (Matthew 28:19, KJV).
