DIVINE LAWS: GLORY OF GOD’S JUSTICE AND LOVE

Psalm 119:172 (KJV): “My tongue shall speak of thy word: for all thy commandments are righteousness.”

ABSTRACT

This article explores the profound connection between God’s law, His throne, Christ’s redemptive work, and our responsibilities to God and others, revealing the depth of His justice, mercy, and love that guides us toward holiness and restoration.

GOD’S THRONE: FOUNDATION OF JUSTICE AND MERCY

God’s law forms the essence of His throne, rooted in justice and mercy. Psalm 89:14 (KJV) declares, “Justice and judgment are the habitation of thy throne: mercy and truth shall go before thy face.” This balance of moral perfection shows justice and compassion coexisting harmoniously. Sr. White supports this, stating, “The law of God, from its very nature, is unchangeable. It is a revelation of the will and character of its Author” (The Great Controversy, p. 434, 1911). Reinforcing this, Psalm 97:2 (KJV) affirms, “Clouds and darkness are round about him: righteousness and judgment are the habitation of his throne.” Similarly, Isaiah 16:5 (KJV) states, “And in mercy shall the throne be established: and he shall sit upon it in truth.” Sr. White further notes, “God’s government is moral, and truth and love are its foundation” (Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 36, 1890). She adds, “His law is a transcript of His own character, and it is the standard of all character” (Christ’s Object Lessons, p. 315, 1900). We find peace in living by His principles, for God’s law is a gift guiding us to holiness. How does this divine balance shape our responsibilities to God?

HUMANITY’S DUTY TO GOD

God calls us to love and obey Him with all our being. Deuteronomy 6:5 (KJV) commands, “And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.” This love requires complete dedication, engaging every aspect of our lives. Sr. White writes, “To love Him… with the whole strength, mind, and heart, means the highest development of every power” (The Desire of Ages, p. 668, 1898). Scripture reveals our shortcomings, as Romans 3:10 (KJV) states, “There is none righteous, no, not one.” Joshua 24:15 (KJV) urges, “Choose you this day whom ye will serve,” emphasizing our need for divine grace. Likewise, 1 John 5:3 (KJV) declares, “For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.” Sr. White explains, “Obedience is the fruit of faith” (Steps to Christ, p. 61, 1892). She further states, “All true obedience comes from the heart” (The Desire of Ages, p. 668, 1898). Through dedication to God, we align with His purpose and grow spiritually. How does Christ’s obedience enable us to fulfill this calling?

CHRIST’S PERFECT OBEDIENCE: PATH TO REDEMPTION

Jesus Christ perfectly fulfilled God’s law, bridging the gap between divine expectation and human frailty. Isaiah 42:21 (KJV) states, “The Lord is well pleased for his righteousness’ sake; he will magnify the law, and make it honourable.” Sr. White explains, “Christ was treated as we deserve, that we might be treated as He deserves” (The Desire of Ages, p. 25, 1898). Christ’s righteousness is our hope, as Philippians 2:8 (KJV) notes, “He humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.” Likewise, Hebrews 5:9 (KJV) affirms, “He became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him.” Sr. White elaborates, “By His perfect obedience He has made it possible for every human being to obey God’s commandments” (Christ’s Object Lessons, p. 312, 1900). She adds, “Christ’s righteousness is accepted in place of man’s failure” (Selected Messages, Book 1, p. 363, 1958). Christ’s life shows that God’s law reflects His relational nature, calling us to walk closely with Him. How does His redemptive work reflect God’s love for us?

GOD’S LOVE SHOWN THROUGH REDEMPTION

God’s sacrifice of His Son reveals a love beyond comprehension. John 3:16 (KJV) proclaims, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son.” Sr. White emphasizes, “The law of God is an expression of His very nature; it is an embodiment of the great principle of love” (Steps to Christ, p. 60, 1892). Scripture underscores this, as Romans 5:8 (KJV) states, “God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” Similarly, 1 John 4:9 (KJV) declares, “In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.” Sr. White notes, “The cross of Calvary is stamped on every loaf” (The Desire of Ages, p. 660, 1898). She further states, “The atonement of Christ is the great truth around which all other truths cluster” (Gospel Workers, p. 315, 1915). God’s redemptive plan transforms us, offering eternal life through Christ. How does this love inspire our duty to others?

God’s law calls us to serve our neighbors with compassion. Luke 10:27 (KJV) instructs, “Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.” Sr. White writes, “True love to God will be manifested in unselfish love for our neighbor” (Steps to Christ, p. 77, 1892). This command is active, as Galatians 5:13 (KJV) urges, “By love serve one another.” Likewise, Matthew 25:40 (KJV) states, “Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.” Sr. White explains, “In every act of mercy, we are to represent Christ” (The Ministry of Healing, p. 143, 1905). She adds, “The law of God requires that we love our neighbor as ourselves” (Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 5, p. 136, 1882). By caring for others, we reflect God’s love and demonstrate His law’s transformative power. How do we live out this calling in gratitude?

GOD’S LOVE AND OUR RESPONSE

God’s law and redemption reveal His boundless love, calling us to faith, obedience, and service. John 14:15 (KJV) states, “If ye love me, keep my commandments.” Sr. White notes, “Obedience to the law of God is sanctification” (The Sanctified Life, p. 85, 1889). Scripture affirms this, as 1 Peter 1:22 (KJV) declares, “Ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren.” Sr. White further states, “The law of God is the standard by which the characters and the lives of men will be tested in the judgment” (The Great Controversy, p. 482, 1911). She adds, “Love is the basis of godliness” (Christ’s Object Lessons, p. 416, 1900). We reflect God’s character by embracing His law and sharing His love, becoming beacons of hope.
